Saints of God 2012 Calendar

Page 2: Paulist 2012 Calendar

We give the Word of God a voice in pulpits and print, on radio and television, on the Web and the wide screen.

We share the passion of Saint Paul for unity in faith and solidarity in mission among all the baptized in the body of Christ.

We welcome people of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds in our parishes, city centers, and campus worship communities. We claim Isaac Hecker as our founder, the Holy Spirit as our primary guide, Saint Paul as our patron, and the laity as our valued partners in mission.

We search out those who have no church home, and welcome home those who have been away.

We build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of other world religions. The Gospel we preach calls for all the people of God to be treated with dignity and justice.

We are Paulists. Missionaries to North America.

Dear Friend in Christ,

Spirited Paulist ministry is as relevant today as it was when Servant of God Isaac Hecker, C.S.P., embarked on his work to bring the Catholic faith to America. The Paulist Fathers continue that work by guiding others into the loving arms of Jesus Christ and His Church, reinvigorating the faithful, inviting inactive Catholics home again, fostering understanding between Catholics and people of other faiths, and reaching out in innovative ways to meet the temporal and spiritual needs of the elderly, young adults, and the underserved.

More than 150 years after the founding of our community, Paulists faithfully respond to God’s call, animated by Hecker’s vision. Your 2012 Saints of God Calendar is one of the many ways we minister to the spiritual growth of our brothers and sisters in Christ: we hope that the beautiful images of God’s saints will inspire you to recognize the ever-more beautiful divine image in each of us. We invite you to be part of Christ’s mission to do just that.

I hope that you enjoy your calendar. Indeed I hope that you find looking at it inspires you to explore unique and imaginative ways of working God’s will in your own life. We are happy to send you this—without obligation—as a reminder that your support of the Paulist Fathers makes our mission both possible and effective. Thank you ever so much.

Thank you, and may God continue to bless you.

Servant of God Father Isaac Thomas Hecker, Founder of the Paulist Fathers. Born: Dec. 18, 1819, in New York City to German immigrant parents. Died: Dec. 22, 1888, following a long illness.

“It can never be uttered too often that Catholicism means the universal good, the true and the beautiful.”

Calendar Notes

1. The 2012 liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011.

2. Scripture citations are based on the New American Bible with the revised New Testament and may differ slightly from the citations given in the Ordo Lectionum Missae (1981) due to difference in versification.

3. In the preparation of diocesan and provincial calendars and ordines, the dedication of diocesan cathedrals, the dedication of parish churches, and special days of prayer (cf. General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 2002, no. 373) should be added, along with other commemorations of saints and the blesseds that are included in those particular calendars.

4. In several ecclesiastical provinces of the United States of America, the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is transferred from Thursday, May 17, 2012, to the following Sunday, May 20, 2012. In those archdioceses and dioceses, on Thursday, May 17, one may observe as an Easter Weekday.

5. Outside the Advent, Christmas, Lenten, and Easter seasons, on Saturdays that have no commemoration having the rank of obligatory memorial or higher, a Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary may be celebrated. The readings and prayers may be selected from the Collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

6. In a decree dated March 23, 1992, the bishop of Honolulu designated Christmas and the Immaculate Conception as the only two holy days of obligation for the State of Hawaii. This implements the indult received from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on May 26, 1990, and the subsequent nihil obstat from the USCCB allowing Hawaii to legislate on this matter in accord with the policies of the Conference of Bishops of the South Pacific (CEPAC).

7. In 2011, because a Sunday does not occur between December 25 and January 1, the feast of the Holy Family is celebrated on Friday, December 30, with only one reading before the Gospel.

8. Since March 25, 2012 is the fifth Sunday of Lent, the solemnity of Annunciation of the Lord, normally assigned to this day, is transfered to March 26, 2012.

The liturgical days on this calendar are taken from the Liturgical Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America, published by the Secretariat of Divine Worship, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Giving the Gospel a Voice TodayCelebrating 154 Years of Evangelization and Service In North America!

It was in the 19th Century while in Rome that Paulist founder, Father Isaac Hecker, received Pope Pius IX’s approval to establish an order of priests for the purpose of serving the Church in the United States.

Upon returning to America in 1858, Fr. Hecker’s new congregation—which consisted of Fr. Hecker and Fathers Augustine Hewit, Francis Baker, and George Deshon—was accepted into the New York Archdiocese. Calling themselves the “Missionary Priests of St. Paul the Apostle,” or “Paulists,” the four traveled throughout the United States conducting parish missions and bringing the beauty and truth of the Catholic faith to those of other faiths as well as those unchurched and alienated.

At the same time, the Paulists started printing newspapers as a means of spreading the Gospel and our beloved Catholic Faith. In 1866, Fr. Hecker founded the Paulist Press (originally called the Catholic Publication Society) to propagate Catholic doctrine and teachings on a wider scale.

In more recent times, radio, television, film, and the Internet are the means by which the Paulists spread the Good News throughout North America, Canada, Italy, and Israel.

In January of 2008, at the majestic Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York City, the cause for canonization in the Roman Catholic Church was formally opened for Paulist Fathers founder Father Isaac Thomas Hecker.

Please report all favors received to: Office of the Cause of Father Hecker, 3015 Fourth Street NE, Washington, DC 20017-1102

Saint Paul the Apostle

Great convert and Apostle of the Gentiles, you became Christ-like and knew only Christ Crucified. Though

extremely learned, you relied completely on the Wisdom received from the Spirit and taught from the abundance of your heart. Instruct modern evangelists — those who preach Christ to others. Let them realize that their actions speak louder in conveying their God-given message but to rely above all on the

promptings of the Spirit. Amen.

Saint Paul is the patron saint of the Paulist Fathers. Hismission was one of reaching out and preaching the

Gospel to his contemporaries, spreading the messageof God’s love – much like the Paulist Fathers do today. Before his conversion on the road to Damascus, Paulspent many years persecuting the early Church. Hespent the rest of his life as a missionary, trying to

convert others to Christianity. Saint Paul was beheaded in Rome in 67 AD.

Saint John the Baptist

God, Let us pray (in silence) [that we, like John the Baptist,

prepare for the advent of Christ]. God our strength and our hope, grant us the courage of John the

Baptist, constantly to speak the truth, boldly to rebuke vice, and patiently to suffer for the truth's sake; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the

Holy Spirit one God now and forever. Amen.

Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of baptism, preached on the banks of the Jordan against the evils of the times and called men to penance and baptism

“for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.” He attracted large crowds, and when Christ came to him, John recognized

Him as the Messiah and baptized Him saying, “It is I who need baptism from You.” He was beheaded on August 29, 30 AD. John’s disciples, hearing of his death, “came, and

took his body, and laid it in a tomb.”

Saint Patrick

I bind to myself this day the power of God to guide me, the might of God to uphold me, the wisdom of God to teach me, the eye of God to watch

over me, the ear of God to hear me, the word of God to give me speech, the hand of God to protect me, the shield of God to shelter me, the host of God to defend me against evil, against the

lust of nature, against every person who meditates injury to me, whether far or

near, whether alone or with many.I have invoked all these virtues against

every hostile, savage power warring upon my body and soul, against the evil laws of paganism, against the false laws

of heresy, against the false promises of idolatry, and against all knowledge

which blinds the soul of humanity. Amen

Saint Patrick was born in Scotland in 389 AD. At the age of 16, he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave. During his captivity, he turned to God. He escaped

to the coast after God came to him in a dream and told him to leave Ireland. There he found sailors to take him back to

Britain. Later, Patrick had another dream telling him to return to Ireland. He began studying for the priesthood and was ordained by Saint Germanus. He eventually became a

bishop and was sent to Ireland to preach the Gospel. He spent forty years preaching; he used the shamrock to

explain the trinity. Along the way, he built churches with his disciples and converted many people.

Saint Joseph

Oh, Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God. I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh, Saint

Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from

your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my

thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

Oh, Saint Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for

me and ask him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. Saint Joseph, Patron of departing

souls — Pray for me.

Saint Joseph was the foster father of Jesus Christ, the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and believed descendant

of David, the greatest king of Israel. Joseph was a simple man; he was a carpenter and eventually so was Jesus. He was also a man of faith. When an angel came to him in a dream with the truth about Mary’s baby, he did not question it and wed her. Even though he was only the foster father of Jesus, he loved and cared for him. He fled to Egypt then resettled in Nazareth to keep Jesus and Mary safe, leaving behind his home and his family. It is believed that Joseph died before

Jesus began his public preaching.

The Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary, on this day when we honor all mothers, we turn to you. We thank

the Lord whom you serve for the great gift of motherhood. Never has it been known that anyone who sought your

intercession was left unaided by grace. Dear Mother, thank you for your “Yes”

to the invitation of the angel which brought heaven to earth and changed

human history. You opened yourself to God’s word and the Word was made

flesh and dwelt among us. Dear mother, intercede for all of our mothers. Ask your Divine Son to give them the grace of surrendered love so

that they could join with you in giving their own “Fiat.” May they find daily strength to say yes to the call to the

sacrificial love — the very heart of the vocation of motherhood. May their

love and witness be a source of great inspiration for all of us called to follow

your Son. On this Mother's Day, Mother of the

Word Incarnate, pray for us who have recourse to you...

In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The greatest of all Christian saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary was chosen by God the Father to be the mother of his only

son, Jesus Christ. According to the Gospel of John (19:26-27), “Jesus said, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then he said to

the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.” Jesus spoke these words to John. However, through these words, Mary is regarded as the mother figure to all of Jesus’ disciples and all Christians.

Saint Peter and Saint Paul

Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you by their martyrdom: Grant that your Church,

instructed by their teaching and example, and knit together in unity by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon the one foundation, which is

Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and

ever. Amen.

Simon Peter, a native of Bethsaida, near Lake Tiberias, was a fisherman and worked with his brother Saint Andrew.

Jesus called both men to serve as disciples.

When Peter acknowledged him as “the Messiah, the son of the living God,” Jesus responded by saying: “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church.” And he added,

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” He was the first apostle to perform miracles in the name of the Lord and upon Jesus’ death became the head of the Apostles. His life was a testament of the missionary life of bringing Jesus

Christ to Jews and Gentiles alike. He was martyred during the reign of Nero in Rome probably around 64 AD.

Paul, formerly known as Saul of Tarsus, is the patron saint of the Paulist Fathers. Saul was a man who had terrorized the early followers of Jesus, but on the road to Damascus, the resurrected Jesus appeared to him in a blinding light and struck him blind. Three days later, Ananias healed him, and Paul went on to spread the

word throughout the Mediterranean that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. His mission of reaching out to others is

much like the Paulist Fathers today.

Saint Columba

Let me bless almighty God, whose power extends over sea and land,

whose angels watch over all. Let me study sacred books to calm my soul: I pray for peace, kneeling at heaven's

gates. Let me do my daily work, gathering seaweed, catching fish, giving food to the poor. Let me say my daily

prayers, sometimes chanting, sometimes quiet, always thanking God. Delightful it is to live on a peaceful isle, in a quiet

cell, serving the King of kings.

It is believed that Saint Columba was born in Northern Ireland of royal descent in 521 AD. He was

ordained by the age of 25 and preached in Ireland for the next 15 years. Columba was held morally responsible for the battle of Cuil Dremne in which 3,000 were killed. He avoided excommunication by exiling himself to the island

of Iona at the age of 42. Columba sought to attempt to win for Christ as many souls as had died in the battle of Cuil

Dremne. He built a monastery in Scotland and set-up a number of foundations in Ireland. An avid sailor, he

traveled extensively and is credited with founding dozens of churches in his travels.

Servant of God, Isaac Thomas

HeckerHeavenly Father, you called your servant Isaac Thomas Hecker to

preach the Gospel to the people of North America and through his

teaching, to know the peace and the power of your indwelling Spirit. He

walked in the footsteps of Saint Paul the Apostle, and like Paul spoke your

Word with a zeal for souls and a burning love for all who came to him in need. Look upon us this day, with

compassion and hope. Hear our prayer. We ask that through the intercession of Father Hecker your servant, you might grant us (state the request). We ask this

in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. One

God, forever and ever. Amen.

Isaac Hecker was born in New York City on December 18, 1819. Ordained a Redemptorist priest

in 1849, he founded the Missionary Society of Saint Paul the Apostle in New York on July 7, 1858. The society was established to evangelize both believers and nonbelievers in order to convert North America to the Roman Catholic

Church. His cause for sainthood (or canonization) was officially opened in January 2008.

Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the

devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the

Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world

for the ruin of souls. Amen.

Saint Michael is one of the principal angels. He has four primary roles: to carry deceased souls to heaven,

give each soul the chance to atone for sins prior to passing, act as guardian of the church, and battle Satan and fallen angels. In this last role, he is often depicted as a warrior. When pagans attempted to divert the River Lycus against

the sanctuary of Saint Michael, Saint Michael the Archangel appeared and opened a new riverbed to redirect the

water away from the sanctuary.

Saint Zachariah and Saint Elizabeth

Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. When her neighbors and

relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child;

and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zachariah.

His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.” But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”

So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called. And he

asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. Then fear came

on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout

all the hill country of Judea. And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of

the Lord was with him.

Saint Zachariah and Saint Elizabeth were the parents of Saint John the Baptist. Zachariah was a priest in the temple of

Jerusalem. Elizabeth was a cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although Elizabeth was barren, Zachariah was told in a vision by an angel that he and Elizabeth would have a son named

John. When he questioned the vision, he was rendered speechless. Once John was born, his speech returned.

Saint Andrew

O glorious Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow

the Lamb of God. With your friend, Saint John, you remained with Jesus for that first day, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. As you

led your brother, Saint Peter, to Christ and many others after him, draw us also to Him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for Him and dedication in His service. Help

us to learn the lesson of the Cross and to carry our daily crosses without

complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus. Amen.

Saint Andrew was the first disciple of Christ. Born in Bethsaida, near Lake Tiberias, Andrew was a fisherman

like his brother Saint Peter. He was first a disciple of Saint John the Baptist. However, Andrew understood that Jesus was greater when John pointed to Jesus and said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” Eventually, Andrew introduced Peter to

Jesus. After Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, Andrew preached the gospel in Asia Minor and in Scythia as far as Kiev. He deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on

the same type of cross on which Christ had been crucified. Instead he asked to be tied to a Crux decussata, which is an X shaped cross. Andrew was bound to the cross where he suffered and continued to preach the gospel for two days

until he finally died.

The Holy Family

O God, Heavenly Father, it was part of Thine eternal decree that

Thine only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, should

form a holy family with Mary, His blessed mother, and His foster father, Saint Joseph. In Nazareth, home life was sanctified, and a perfect example was given to every Christian family.

Grant, we beseech Thee, that we may fully comprehend and faithfully imitate the virtues of the Holy Family so that we may be united with them one day in their heavenly glory. Through the

same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The Divine Son of God, Jesus; his mother, Mary; and his foster father, Joseph. The Feast of the Holy Family

is not just about the Holy Family, but about our families too. The main purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in general. Our family life becomes sanctified when we live

the life of the Church within our homes. This is called the “domestic church” or the “church in miniature.”

Saint John Chrysostom urged all Christians to make each home a “family church,” and in doing so we sanctify

the family unit.

3. President John F. Kennedy took up the collection at the Paulist Center in Boston while serving in the United States Senate.

4. Paulist Father George Mary Searle, C.S.P., also an astronomer, designed the star constellations on the dark blue ceiling of St. Paul the Apostle Church in New York City. They represent the alignment of the stars on January 25, 1885, when the church was dedicated.

5. Monsignor John. J. Burke, C.S.P., gave the main address at the funeral of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister of Canada.

6. Actress Loretta Young donated a trailer to the Paulist Trailer Missions in Winchester, Tennessee.

7. Father Clarence Walworth, C.S.P., an original Paulist, wrote the English translation for the hymn, “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name,” an adaptation of the ancient “Te Deum.” It was the most recognizable Catholic hymn for generations, usually concluding Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

8. Paulist Father Alexander P. Doyle, C.S.P., was the first Californian to join the community. As a young recent college graduate, he attended a mission in 1875 conducted by the Paulists at his home parish of Saint Peter’s in San Francisco. Doyle served as an editor and missionary as well as director of the Apostolic Mission House on the grounds of the Catholic University of America.

9. In his youth, Cardinal Francis E. George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, was a Paulist Chorister in the “Windy City.”

10. Paulist Father Eugene Burke, C.S.P., was one of many child actors who appeared on Hal Roach’s original “Our Gang” comedy series (1922-1927).

11. There are at least 5 saints buried in the Paulist-served Church of Santa Susanna in Rome. They include Saints Susanna, Gabinus, Felicity, Eleutherius, and Genesius, the patron saint of actors.

12. Paulist Father Patrick Traynor, C.S.P., served as chaplain at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles for 16 years. He pastorally cared for film star Rick Hudson in his last weeks of life in 1985.

13. Bing Crosby’s character Father Chuck O’Malley in Going My Way (1944) and The Bells of Saint Mary’s (1945) was modeled after Paulist Father Eugene O’Malley, C.S.P., and the Paulist Choristers of Old Saint Mary’s parish in Chicago.

14. Among all religious orders, the Paulists supplied the largest percentage of military chaplains during World War II.

17. A parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle parish in New York, Attorney Charles O’Conor, defended Confederate President Jefferson Davis from the charge of treason following the Civil War. Jefferson Davis was eventually pardoned in 1868. O’Conor was also the first Roman Catholic to run for President in the election of 1872, splitting the New York Democrats who had nominated Horace Greeley. It was O’Conor who gave the Paulist Fathers their property at Lake George, New York, in 1872.

18. St. Paul the Apostle parish in Los Angeles, served by the Paulists, occupies the site of the film studio of Harold Lloyd, the famous silent film comedian.
