PCACRAOPACIFIC COAST ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGIATE
REGISTRARS AND ADMISSION OFFICERS
hmhttet13 November 1956
REMINISCENSES; PRESIDENT DON DUSAULT
I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of the Association for their splendid cooperation during my term of office the past year. Itwas very gratifying to me that so many of you were able to come to the InlandEmpire for our thirtieth convention.
Our annual gatherings may be likened to homecomings as celebrated on ourcampuses. Each November I look forward to seeing many of my old friends andmaking new acquaintances. Our Association is a friendly group but in additionto getting better acquainted personally, we also gather much valuable informationfor our institutions and our own offices from fellow members at our annual meetings,
I am sure that you all will continue your loyal support to PCACRAO throughour new president, Louie Windmiller. I shall hope to see all of you in SanFrancisco in 1957 and wish you all the best of everything for the future.
REMINISCENCES.; CONVENTION CHAIRMAN CLAUDE SIMPSON
As convention chairman I wish to extend my sincere "thank yous" to Helmuth,Quin, Ruth, Jimraie, Clif, Don, Myrt and all the Committee members who contributedtheir talents to this conclave.
To Harry, Jack and all the "gals" of the DAVENPORT your willingness to rendersmiling, efficient service, regardless of the request, has made our stay a verypleasant experience.
The work and planning over the past two years fades into pleasant memoriesas we come to the close of our 1956 convention.
REMINISCENSES; NEWSLETTER EDITOR
The editor owes thanks to so many people for assistance with the four modest
NEWSLETTERS of 1956. Specifically, the women who did the secretarial and stenographic work are mentioned: Mrs, Aileen Sawyers, secretary to the AssistantRegistrar at Portland State College, typed the mats; Mrs. Fumie Sakano, the editor•ssecretary, wrote several hundred letters and kept details flowing, Mrs. EleanorRigdon, head of the printing department at Portland State College, designed thedistinctive cover sheet and printed NEWSLETTERS.
All the contributors were generous with their timej in addition to articleswritten by some PCACRAO members, they also took time to keep us posted on currentinformation about themselves and compatriots. President Don kept the editorprompted at all times and was on time with his messages. Clif Constance and ClaudeSimpson were helpful and supplied us with necessary information.
Readers were ever gracious and forgiving about errors which somehow seemed tocreep into copy.
Those who helped with the conference issue, Miss Eva Blackwell, AssistantRegistrar at Oregon State College, and Mrs. Helen Wilderman, Assistant Registrarat Portland State College, gave gallantly of their precious conference moments.
REMINISCBNSES: NEWSLETTER EDITOR (continued)
Finally, Reverend J. F, Gubbins, Registrar at Gonzaga, and his typist deserve thanks for yeoman service they provided in getting out this conferenceissue. We descended upon them like Arabs from the hills. They not only stoodtheir ground in the face oC superior numbers, but they gave such assistance asto cause us forever to be grateful to them.
Additional AACRAO Duties
Florence Brady further reports that additional duties for AACRAO have beenassumed by Ellen Deering of College of the Pacific and Ethelyn Toner of theUniversity of Washington. Ellen and Ethelyn have been elected by the AACRAOmembership to the Committee on Nominations and Elections. Each is to serve aone-year term for the Association.
Reflections on a Reception
The Elizabethan room filled to capacity with registrars and admission officers- - large bowls of yellow punch ladled out to wet academic tongues - - cookieswere the big kind and not the usual wispy baked dough - - real character to thesecookies. Ethelyn Toner of Washington and Mrs. H. B. Stough from University ofIdaho ladled.
President Don bounded around with a gorgeous carnation in his lapel - -wondered how he kept it fresh in the hot room - - glad OUR president doesn't chargearound with wilted carnations showing - - Mrs. DDD had a swell orchid.
Met Mrs. William Norris for the first time - - Bill has been around for yearsbut he's kept Mrs. Norris from us - - liked Bill's white crew cut - - readilyidentified Dave Arata of Santa Clara because identical twin Leo Wolf son was missing,
Saw Francis Gurll from UC at Riverside delightedly enjoying the song aboutJonah and the whole - - watched Harold Jory from Willamette overcome his conscienceand take two cookies — admired the effortless manner in which the registrationcrew turned 'em through the lines.
Avand Whitman (Linfield) looked happy and well fed - - arrived early andsponged off relatives for two days — missed Jack Parnall (UBC) who had to attenddomincon meetings in Ottawa, Canada - - noticed that Gloria Doerfler (PacificUniversity) added great charm to the reception - - wondered where she has beenin previous years.
Whitworth Colle ge Musicians. A feature of the reception was the solo singingof Bill Moss, a music education major from IVhitworth, A men's quartet from thesame college sand several varied numbers, assembled Rs and AOs recalled the fellowsfor encores. Men in the quartet were:
Earl Burie, 1st tenor. Business administration MajorDick Blackstone, 2nd tenor, Pre-Ministerial MajorJim Osborn, bass, Pre-Law MajorClarence Wisecup, baritone, Pre-Ministerial Major
Accompanist and piano solist was Fred Brahams, a Music major at Whitworth, Thanks,so much, guys.
J. S, Carlson's Seven "Shoulds"
J. Spencer Carlson, associate dean of students at the University of Oregon, had notes on seven shoulds commandeered by NEWSLETTER editor. Editor discoveredto his horror several hours later that he was unfamiliar with Spence's handwriting,(Editor should have known better; for years he's been trying to decipher Spence'ssignature on letters.) Listed "shoulds'' should not be accepted as other thanour empirical observation of Spence's h^dwriting. As a calligrapher, NEWSLETTEReditor is not worth a Stanford "C",
High school rating should meet these several standards:
1. Should predict with best possible accuracy later college performancein either specific cases or generally.
2. Should have a college frame of reference. (Must relate to performancein given institution not generally to high school.)
3. Should minimize differences between high schools. Rating should be afunction of student's performance not school standards.
4. Should minimize differences between college prep vs general curricula,
5. Should be in a form amenable to statistical analysis.
6. Should be adaptable to rapid £uid accurate computation.
7. Hopefully. Should have face validity. Public relations demand amethod which is comparatively easy to comprehend and accept as valid,
Jorv Survey of Admission Literature
Harold Jory (Willamette) presided as the chairman of a panel on evaluationof the individual student. He made a survey of recent literature on the subjectand a bibliography was handed NEWSLETTER for publication,

The Conference Pipe Line
Man of Distinction, We nominate Doug McClain as extra-curricular promoter forPCACRAO conventions. Confidentially, he knows all the celestial view points andprime rib au Jus beaneries on the coast.
Long Hairs. Dean Paul Jackson has discovered another criterion to add to hisdelightful speech on "Criteria for Institutions and Programs." Those who havea love for and "clobber the clavicord" make good registrars. For example,Katharine Walker has a three-year apprenticeship on the accordian; H, Impecovenis rounding out three years of scales on the piano; Phil Curtis pulls the stopson his organ.
Grandpa Tom. The baby carriage trade has increased by one. Twice congratulations,Tom OrdemanJ We hear that you claim two and a half months old Diane Moffett ofPittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as your first grandchild. Also, that son, Dan, willpresent you with a new daughter via the alter next Sunday.
Idaho Affluence, Our operative No, 1 tells us that the state of Idaho boasts100% attendance at the convention, A tip of the hat to this fine record and toPrexy Don DuSault who heads the contingent.
Old Timers. Ellen Deering and Bill Pomeroy are missing from the conventionroster much to the disappointment of their many friends of long standing and newones, too. We hear that Bill is toying with the idea of retiring. All join inwishing Bill great happiness in his new designs for living.
Kingdom For A Hose, The milk-train story is printed elsewhere, but a tid-bitwhich caught the ear of our reporter tells that Mrs, Louie Windmiller, sanshose, went seeking same at the Pasco lunch stop. Where did she find themerchandise? In a grocery store, Mrs, Windmiller is well known for her lecturesand classes on flower arrangements.
Speedometer Turner, We expect to greet Ella Oleson, former registrar at theUniversity of Idaho, at the banquet tonight. She is on the last lap of herworld-wide trip started last spring. How many miles did you register on theVolkswagen, Ella?
Grandpa Bill. Bill Dillon of the University of San Francisco is a recent grandfather.
Windsor. Duke of. In a small FCACRAO-filled elevator Florence Brady of OccidentalCollege fixed fellow conference attender with piercing eyes. "Did you know," shesaid, "that both a Windsor and a Buckingham were seen in the Elizabethan room?"
Lead Livers. Herman Spindt (UC) wore his checkered blazer jacket on first dayof the conference and looked especially jaunty. Howard Shontz (UC-Davis) admiredresplendent Herman and on Tuesday wore his coat of zippy colors and snazzy checks.Discovered to his amazement that Brother Spindt had felt self conscious and wasadorned in customary conference-going pinstrips. NEWSLETTER missed the manyCalifornia men who usually wear eye-slashing sport coats and pants of somber hue.Northerners were in usual form with serge and pinstripe which they always wear toconfabs. The women had a style show, so we tossed in this note of style consciousness for the males!
Phil and Piltron. From the baton to the organ is the musical switch made byPhil Curtis of Menlo Junior College. In his youth he conducted symphony orchestrasthroughout Europe. One day vdiile poised before the podium in Rome he suddenlydecided he wanted a college education instead; called father Curtis in the stateswho philosophically agreed to invest an additional $10,000 to the already invested$50,000 in junior*s career. This educational program lead to teaching English, the office of registrar, and the life of a bachelor.
Today Phil is lured home each afternoon at 4:30 o'clock by his new Thomaselectric organ vhich he plays for relaxation until 6:00 o'clock when he startspreparing his evening meal. The only usurper allowed in the Curtis householdis the fabulous new coffee brewing process known as "Piltron." Only choiceFrench Market coffee, purchased by the case, is used. It is a cold water twenty-four hour method using a pound of coffee. Phil guarantees sleep for everyoneno matter how many cups are consumed because the oils do not separate in thisrich with chicory brew. Boiling water is added to the desired quantity of thispure essence of coffee. Generous Phil makes a practice of shipping a pound ofcoffee now and then to friends.
Seven Souls on Siding Safari
Katharine Walker, ORSES, UCLA
Just as the annual meetings of the PCACRAO are never dull, neither are thetrips to and from the meeting places. This year, for example.
Seven hearty souls, by name David Arata, Bill Dillon, Carmelita Stanley,Katharine Walker, Frank Gurll, Louis and Mrs. Windmiller, had the pleasure ofriding the Overland Unlimited from Portland to Spokane.
Th® trip started at 8:30 a.m. The apparatus included two baggage cars,a private passenger car complete with oil burner in one corner, wooden floor, seats—yes, and a rear exit vdiich was grilled over, discouraging any attemptsat escape. An engine, of course, an engineer, we think, and a conductor, we know, because he was our constant companion.
While stopping to deliver papers in all backyards along the way, we had anopportunity to chat with the owners and learn about condition of the crops. Wealso had an opportunity to enjoy the scenery and ozone from the sidings we sat onwhile letting the fast freight trains go by. (Continued on Page 6)
Fouled Registration Reports
Mrs, Kathleen Guiremand, registrar at Immaculate Heart College, askedNH'tfSIBTTBR to correct statistics for IHC in the October issue. She stated: "Ourfull time undergraduate enrollment is only 458 not 1061, The total 1061 includesthe graduate school (166) and the adult education enrollment (437)." Indeed, thiswas an error in reporting the figures.
The error started us on some research and ive found several schools where full
and part time students had been listed incorrectly. The editor had intended thatall numbers except full time students would be given as footnotes or as explanatorymaterial. Enrollments should, therefore, be corrected for these colleges:
Los Angeles City College (Los Angeles, California) has 7773 day and 12, 396evening students,
Olympic College (Bremerton, VJashington) has 620 day and 516 part time.
Whitworth College (Spokane, Washington) has 892 day showing an increase of6,5 percent and 168 evening students.
Campus at Coalinga College
Ceremonies dedicating the new million dollar Coalinga College campus tookplace Sunday, 4 November, on the college quadrangle, Ihe new campus, which openedits doors on 11 September this year, is a completely air-conditioned plant.includingclassrooms, library, labs, administrative offices, and a student center.
Originally an extension of Fresno State College in 1932, Coalinga College, before moving to the new 40 acre site, was situated on the campus of Coalinga UnionHigh School, Designed to accomodate 600 students, the present enrollment of thecollege numbers 308,
California School of Fine Arts
"Shef" Sheffield notified President Don on 12 October 1956 that the application of this school had been approved by all officers of the Association, NEWSLETTER extends welcome to the conference and looks forward to meeting 'ihe re-presentative from CSFA,
Seven Souls on Siding Safari (continued)
A ten minute coffee break at VJishram was also included. A stop of an hour and ahalf at Fasco provided a chance to eat lunch and change trains. The change wasmaneuvered by a well-lit baggage man who stacked our bags on a truck and with awavy wave of his wavy hand bid us well on our search for food, saying we didn'tneed any baggage checks since he'd watch our luggage, When we returned to thestation, no baggage - - no baggage man. He did show up and managed to pick uptwo bags off the loaded truck and to stagger back from one car to another lookingfor the owners. The train was ready to start so the hearty seven got off, pickedup their own bags, and helped the baggage man off the train.
