C. SENIOR DESIGN PROJECTS

I chaired the ad hoc committee that laid the foundation for the senior design project at the college level and authored its handbook. Additionally, coordinating on every semester all the senior design project activities for both phases (semesters). Senior design projects are extremely important in engineering education and Khalifa University stresses that. When I joined KU, a major overhaul of the senior design project system was needed. Hence, I led the team which formulated the current senior design project scheme that was adopted across the engineering college. That effort led to formulating the current system and continuously modifying it. We made sure that it conforms to the highest international standards that promotes product design, creativity, and team work. Additionally, we supplemented that product development experience with weekly seminars intended to provide the students with tools to improve their skills and efficiency. Wide spectrum of topics are covered in these weekly seminars from project management to ethics. Additionally, during the appointment at Khalifa University, I supervised and/or co-supervised more than ten challenging senior design projects which required close supervision and mentoring for the teams.

D. MECH 399 SUMMER INTERNSHIP

Getting undergraduate students to do research work would expand their horizon, provide them with research tools, and create for them new set of career options. Providing undergraduate students with exciting research problems could be a motivator to pursue their graduate studies. I had nine students conducting limited research projects under the independent studies umbrella. This led some students to change their career track and pursue graduate studies.

E. MECH 491 INDEPENDENT STUDIES:

Page 5: Bashar S. El-Khasawneh, Ph.D., PMP - Khalifa University. Bashar S. El-Khasawneh (971)5-66 11 33 66 bashar.khasawneh@kustar.ac.ae Page 3 of 21 . 1998 Post Doctorate Research Associate,

● Dr. Bashar S. El-Khasawneh ● (971)5-66 11 33 66 ● [email protected] ● Page 5 of 21 ● . .

Khalifa University study plans give the undergraduate students the opportunity to work on research projects that can substitute a free elective through the independent study mechanism. I had a good number of such independent studies providing undergraduate students with exciting research problems which could be motivator for them to pursue their graduate studies.

Next Generation Inspection Tools Program: Working with the technology group exposed me to a number of research and future product development projects. Projects I worked on were listed in the industrial experience section.

Next Generation Machine Tools Program: Managing, defining, and contributing to projects at Caterpillar’s Technical Center in the area of next generation machine tools. This involved technology exploration and validation for different applications:

• Explore, analyze and test new concept machine tools and if suitabe for Caterpillar’s applications. • Implement applications in the OAC area such as self-diagnosis and auto calibration scheme. • Other areas of focus were sensor technology and re-configurable machine tools.

The Intelligent Fixturing System Project (IFS): Develop a fixturing system that has the flexibility to conform to the shape of a family of parts. This project was a NIST-ATP project with LAMB Technicon as the industrial partner and four universities; Georgia Tech, Penn State, Univ. of Michigan and Univ. of Illinois (UI). Each party had to lead certain activity, while working in harmony to have compatible components. The main task at the UI was to develop micro-positioners that are stiff and can produce small motions to compensate for the fixturing uncertainties. Supervised two graduate students on this task and additional subtasks.

Experimental Fixturing Test-Bed: Design and develop an experimental test-bed at the University of Illinois. Static and dynamic experiments can be conducted with this test-bed. Force data is collected with a good number of force sensors integrated with a LabView GUI and NI data acquisition system. The test-bed has a built-in measurement system for measuring feature position and deflections using the triangulation principle. The system is palletized; therefore, data can be collected during machining tests of the workpiece.

The Tetrahedral Tripod Machine Tool project: Developed a new type of high precision machine tool that is parallel link manipulator in concept. This machine has 3 spatial translational degrees of freedom. It has high stiffness and accuracy. I developed the kinematics, dynamics and stiffness theory, computer simulations, FEA analysis, mechanical design, fabrication, and assembly, modal analysis tests and performance cutting tests. In addition, I interfaced the machine with an open architecture controller (the Delta-Tau industrial controller -- PMAC) and implemented and tested number of control algorithms. I Used a hydraulic drives on this machine because of their compactness and damping. This machine has a rotary ultrasonic spindle for ceramics machining. The performance results for the machine were impressive. This machine is at Oak Ridge National
