Maths Investigation – Day 1
Mystery at the Little Hallow Carnival
The village of Little Hallow spend all year preparing for the carnival. Everyone gets involved. Floats are made to look like pirate ships, treasure caves, dinosaurs and palaces. A carnival queen is chosen from a group of eager young ladies and the roads are closed for the parade.
Stalls are set up selling everything from tickets for the teacup rides to wristbands for the helter-skelter.
But disaster has struck! Hundreds of balloons have been kept under a huge net to stop them flying off too early. People have paid for a balloon, to win a prize for the balloon which gets the furthest. However, a naughty person has crept beside the huge net and released the balloons before the countdown! There are balloons bouncing all over the place, getting caught in trees, bumping into the church spire and generally causing mayhem as they disappear into the sky!
Your task is to use the descriptions of the people seen near the balloons and solve the clues to work out who is the mystery balloon releaser!

Clue 1: Snail Trail
At the carnival, there was a snail race. Measure the distances the snails moved, using a ruler.
Colour in the correct answers. Then put the words into a sentence to solve the first clue.
** Cut out the ruler to help you to measure the distance the snails
travelled.

written by Philippa Danvers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwQCQ1V_ZWM
Look really carefully at the picture on the next
page of Maisie in the Woods.
How many animals or funny creatures can
you spot in the picture?
What was your favourite part of the
story?
Why did you like that bit especially?
6
Read this descriptive passage that goes with the picture.
Maisie ran towards the woods. A tiny bird sat cheeping on a
tree stump, while a curious brown fox hid in the long grass
next to the path. Maisie could see that some trees had funny
faces on them, while, above her head, squirrels dashed
along the tree trunks and other birds peeked between the gently swaying
leaves. Under the canopy of branches, the path continued to run through
the wood. Maybe the dragon had gone this way earlier? Maisie decided
she would run down the path and see where it took her.
These words are called prepositions.
Prepositions help us to
describe places and
things by saying
where things are,
what is happening and
how things relate to
one another.
Re-read the passage and highlight the prepositions
you can find. How many did you find? Check on the
answer page to see if you got them all.
7
Additional activity
Look at this picture of Maisie by the playground. Write sentences about
what’s going on using as many of the prepositions from the box, on the
previous page, as you can.

Look out for the dragon in the pictures as
you watch.
Now, choose one of the four pictures of the dragon below: with
the ducks, school playground, supermarket, or with the pony.
18
1. Think what
the dragon
could be saying
in the picture.
2. Tell someone
what the dragon
could be saying
in the picture.
3. Think what
one of the other
characters in
your picture is
saying back to
the dragon.
4. Tell someone
what one of the
other characters
in your picture is
saying back to
the dragon.
19
Draw the picture you have chosen in the box below.
Next, draw in nice big speech bubbles for the dragon and the
other character.
Now, write in the bubbles what each person or creature is
saying.
20
Extra Challenge
Re-write your speech bubbles as sentences with speech marks
(inverted commas).
Speech marks ‘hug’ the words that are spoken:
“Shall we go on the see-saw next?”
We use a ‘reporting clause’ to show who is speaking:
said the girl.
We write a new line when a new person starts
speaking.
“Shall we go on the see-saw next?” asked the girl.
“I’m happy staying on the swings,” replied the boy.
Shall we go on the see-saw next?
I’m happy staying on the

Clue 3: Patsy, the Maths Dog
Mr and Mrs West own a dog called Patsy. They have brought Patsy to the carnival because they believe she can work out different calculations. She barks when she thinks an answer is right. Is she always right, though?
Here are the calculations which Patsy thought were correct. Check if she is right. Work out the answers and tick true or false.
If there are more false answers than true ones, the culprit is female.
If there are more true answers than false ones, the culprit is male.
Answer to Clue 3:
The culprit is male/female

Writing good description, we use adjectives and adverbs to give more
information about nouns.
Nouns name things, including objects, creatures, people or feelings: a
ball. Nouns often have words like a, an, the or some in front of them.
Adjectives are describing words. They often come before a noun (a red
ball) but they can be further on in the sentence too: the ball was red and
round.
Adverbs tell us a bit more about an adjective. We often use adverbs like
very, really, quite, extremely and rather in descriptions: an extremely
bright, red ball.
Read this description on how
Maisie cares for her dragon
Maisie cares for her little dragon. She gives it a very bouncy ball to play
with. She also gives it an extremely comfortable bed with a blanket that is
soft and fluffy.
Maisie bathes her dragon when it is dirty and dries it with a soft, white
towel. She gives it delicious food to eat and takes it for quite long walks on
a long lead.
Maisie reads her dragon funny stories and tucks it up in bed. Sleep well,
dragon!
Highlight the nouns with one colour.
Highlight the adjectives with another colour.
Highlight the adverbs with a third colour.
Check the Answers sheet to see if you spotted them all.

Additional activity
Dragon Care
1. Think hard about how you would care for a pet dragon.
2. For each heading, write a sentence explaining two things that you would
do to care for a dragon.
3. Link your ideas using conjunctions: and, but, or, although and however. I
would feed my dragon really hot peppers but I would only let it eat quite
small amounts of ice cream in case this puts its fire out.
4. Use adjectives and adverbs in your sentences to describe nouns.
