49th Annual CIAA ConferenceThe Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Alberta September 16 -19, 2012
CIAA 2012
Welcome to Peak Performance is within your reach,
the CIAA’s 49th annual conference. I hope you are as
inspired as I am by the majestic scenery at Lake
Louise. Our theme this year has a lot of significance to
me, as I believe that continuous learning helps us realize
our career potential. Part of reaching that potential
means sharing our business knowledge, something
I have strived to do during my years in the industry.
I’m hoping that the 2012 business program will
encourage you to do the same.
We kick off the conference with our keynote speaker
John Amatt, a modern-day explorer and author who
will share his insights and how we can apply a sense
of adventure to business. Our business program is a
dynamic one, featuring our always popular CFO and
CEO panels, an annual accounting update with
Deloitte & Touche, a tax update with Ernst & Young,
an economic update featuring Todd Hirsch, senior
economist at ATB Financial, and a session on corporate governance and OSFI compliance.
New this year is a session on advanced reinsurance, as well as a presentation on mergers
and acquisitions and the impact on our businesses. To round out our business program,
we’ll have a presentation on managing stress. We’ll wrap up with John Marriott, one of
Canada’s top nature and wildlife photographers.
Every year the CIAA chooses a local charity to receive the proceeds from our auction.
Women in Need Society (WINS) is a not-for-profit organization based in Calgary, Alberta.
It was established 20 years ago with the idea of “helping women and their families help
themselves.” Since then, WINS has grown from one thrift store to five stores throughout
Calgary. We are delighted to be in a position to raise money for this worthy cause.
Once again, a huge thank you to my conference committee (Annette Pohle, PwC;
Nazz Baksh, Peace Hills General Insurance; Dan Tworzewski, KPMG; Jim DeJeu,
Lambton Mutual and Rick Keeler, Munich Re) for all the hard work and dedication
needed to bring this conference together.
I wish all of you a great conference and may you reach your peak performance in the
coming years.

Wild West Night at the Brewster Dance Barn
Meet in the lobby at 5:30 PM (buses start departing @ 5:45 PM sharp!)
6:00 PM - 12:00 AM Cocktail reception, dinner at Brewster Dance Barn
The Fairmont team is planning an elegant evening in the ballroom of this
iconic hotel. We’ll mix and mingle before dinner then sit down to an
excellent menu showcasing the culinary talents of the Executive Chef.
We have some live entertainment planned – the Dino Martinis.
This band has a huge repertoire that ranges from ‘50s swing and ballads,
to modern pop and dance hits. We intend to cap off the 49th annual
conference with a fun and exciting evening.
PS. We’ll also have our annual charity raffle this evening. All proceeds go
to an excellent charity - Women in Need Society (WINS) of Calgary.
Experience the Lake Louise of old at the Brewster Dance Barn. Built in 1996, in honour
of the Brewster Cowboys of over 100 years ago, the Dance Barn provides authentic
western atmosphere and entertainment. With a reputation for quality food, service and
rustic facilities, it makes for a memorable Western Canadian experience.
We’ll hear the dinner bell ring and a hip of beef is carried in on traditional pitchfork
complete with all the fixins. The in-house band steps up the pace in true country and
western style. Pack your cowboy boots ... we aim to square dance.
Horseback riding in the Rockies
We’ll experience the majestic Rocky Mountains on
horseback and ride through the spectacular moun-
tain scenery and fragrant pine forests. Departing
from Lake Louise Stables, we’ll be guided by profes-
sional wranglers on this famous trail. Stops include
the popular Lake Agnes teahouse, named after the
original First Lady of Canada, Lady Agnes MacDonald.
Then onto ‘Little Beehive’ lookout (elevation 2,210m)
then to Mirror Lake (2,027m). This three-hour ride
will have the right mix of excitement and discovery
and, of course, breathtaking views of Lake Louise.
Siteseeing tour of Banff
As you depart Lake Louise for Banff, you’ll realize that
‘getting there’ is part of the adventure. The tour follows
the Bow River, past spectacular views of Castle
Mountain, the Sawtooth Range and Mount Temple,
one of the highest peaks in Banff National Park.
Banff is the oldest and largest of the town sites in the
Canadian National Parks, and undoubtedly owes its
existence to the discovery of hot mineral springs on
the slopes of nearby Sulphur Mountain. A gondola trip
up Sulphur Mountain provides panoramic views of the
snowcapped peaks and valleys of the Bow Valley.
You’ll take in the unusual geological formation known
as ‘the Hoodoos’, the splendour of Bow Falls and the
magnificent view of the Bow River Valley as seen from
Tunnel Mountain Drive. Banff is simply one of
Canada’s national treasures ... enjoy.
Hiking in the Rockies
Sunshine Meadows is one of the most stunning
alpine settings in the Canadian Rockies.
Situated at an average elevation of 2,220m,
the meadows straddle the Continental Divide and
the boundary between Alberta and British Columbia.
Surrounded by some of the Rockies' highest peaks,
the unobstructed views are beyond compare.
Wildlife abounds in the meadows, and the brilliance
of the summer flowers and autumn larches
guarantees spectacular scenery on every visit.
Remember to pack your digital camera (a
cell phone won’t do the trip justice!) and,
of course, some comfortable footwear.
Meet in hotel lobby at 12:50 PM for all activites.
Tuesday means serious networking ...
Checklist: comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen and digital camera.
Deep within Banff National Park, Lake Louise is surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the
world, providing for an awe-inspiring mountain playground. This is a world class destination and we intend to
show you the highlights in this five-hour tour.
We follow the Trans-Canada Highway west, across the Great Divide and through Kicking Horse Pass into the
scenic wonders of Yoho National Park. Yoho is a native Cree word meaning “awesome”. Following the winding
alpine road along the Yoho River the tour arrives at one of the highlights of the day, Takakkaw Falls. Thundering
over 1,200 feet off a towering cliff, Takakkaw definitely lives up to its Cree name meaning, “it is magnificent”.
Also in Yoho National Park is the aptly named Emerald Lake, with green waters more impressive than the
tropics. Guests will enjoy plenty of photo opportunities of this postcard-like setting. Returning east along the
highway, the tour leads to the final impressive stop, another jewel of the Rockies: Moraine Lake. This stunningly
iridescent blue body of water is nestled among the majestic Valley of the Ten Peaks.
You’ll lunch at Emerald Lake Lodge. Nestled on a small island in the beautiful Emerald Lake, this Lodge is
extraordinary. Built of hand-hewn timber and featuring massive stone fireplaces, the Lodge houses an elegant
dining room. We travel back to the hotel with ample time to prepare for our evening event.
Monday September 17, 2012

We’ll lunch at Emerald Lake Lodge. A truly spectacular setting and
winner of a prestigious Condé Nast Traveler Award in 2011.

Attention non-delegates: You’re welcome to attend John’s session ...
Meet your keynote speaker John Amatt ... modern day explorer, author and motivational speaker
John Amatt is Founder & President of One Step Beyond WorldWide,
an innovative educational and motivational company whose mission is
to encourage people to push beyond their self-imposed limitations.
He has delivered more than 1,800 presentations and seminars in 44
countries and has been called ‘The World’s Best Adventure Speaker’.
A UK native, he’s been a longtime resident of the Canadian Rocky Mountains
and is founder of the Banff Mountain Film Festival, widely recognized as the
world’s premiere showcase of adventure documentary films.
John is renowned in the international mountaineering community for making
the first ever climb of Europe's highest and steepest mountain face –
the 5,000 foot ‘Vertical Mile’ Troll Wall in Norway. He was leader of an early
climbing expedition to Western China, which used camels to approach a
24,757-foot mountain before skiing to the summit, this being perhaps the
highest peak in the world to have been ascended and descended entirely
on skis. He was the principal organizer and a leader of Canada's first
successful expedition to reach the top of the world - the 29,035-foot
summit of Mount Everest – a climb that was televised live throughout
Canada and on ABC Nightline in the United States.
John’s adventures are chronicled in his autobiography, Straight to the Top
and Beyond, in which he uses the metaphor of his own adventures to
develop a nine-step approach for scaling the heights in today’s unpredictable
global business environments.
John knows about tough times and the value of struggle in bringing out the
best in teams of people. He was a leader of an Everest team, which suffered
four tragic deaths in two unpredictable accidents before putting six climbers
on top of the world. His experience on Everest taught him about the danger
of falling into the trap of complacency and the importance of always
questioning the status quo.
He uses his amazing storytelling ability and experiences to address the
themes of goals and expectations, risk and adventure, embracing fear and
anxiety, the value of commitment, and much more.
The CIAA welcomes John Amatt as our 2012 keynote speaker.

Born in Wales, Philip Jones has spent most of his life in Canada, and now
calls Calgary home. He had a successful career with Woodward’s, a major
western Canadian department store chain.
Later, as a retail management consultant, he enjoyed doing interviews for
radio and television, newspapers and magazines. Philip’s articles have
been published in business magazines in the U.S. and the U.K., as well as
in Canada. As a professional speaker, he has addressed audiences
across Canada.
He is the author of How to Fit a Heart Attack into Your Busy Schedule!
A Light-Hearted Look at Managing Stress. This was written after he had
qualified as a Certified Heart Attackee. The focus of his seminars then
switched from operating a business more successfully to living a life more
effectively. As many of the principles are essentially the same, the shift
was made without difficulty. Many participants have indicated this
presentation made a substantial impact on them. To Philip, this is highly
gratifying.
