The PEFC Asia Promotions Initiative has pilot projects in Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam which are driving forward solutions for agro-forestry and certification to ‘fit’ where it is needed. This outreach is concentrating on addressing local concerns and solving local problems to ensure that certification is both relevant and accessible.

The marketplace for topical timber products is shifting away from mature EU/US markets to customers in Asia, warned Sheam Satkuru-Granzella, Director of the Malaysian Timber Council. PACKAGING SHOW FIRST FOR PEFC

heads up PEFC in the UK said: “We were delighted that so many PEFC stakeholders were able to join us for our third annual stakeholder event. The Asian market presents a huge range of opportunities and challenges. However, with the help of our national partners in Asia including the recently endorsed CFCC, PEFC is raising awareness of the importance and global significance of certified products. It is vital that we continue to work with local communities as well as national governments to ensure an inclusive and sustainable future.”

A successful eventThe event was sponsored by Arnold Laver, Ingénue Consultancy, Malaysian Timber Council, Soil Association Woodmark and Whitmore’s Timber. The afternoon ended with a drinks reception with many delegates remaining to discuss the issues and topics raised during the presentations and panel debate. the hardwood timber sector, now based in Singapore outlined how the huge growth in population was affecting the regional markets. In 2012 approximately 53% of China was urbanised with a projection of 70% by 2035. A 1% increase in urbanisation equates to a 13 million population increase. This will create an enormous market for doors, windows and furniture particularly made from species such as walnut which is popular in China.Summing up the event, Alun Watkins who

In May, James Jones & Sons – Scotland’s largest independent sawmiller – and Scottish Woodlands - the UK’s leading independent Forest Management Company - came together with PEFC UK to host a field trip to the Scottish borders. The visit aimed to demonstrate sustainable forest management in action to 25 stakeholders from a broad range of sectors including public sector, forestry, timber trading, construction, retail, paper and packaging.

The group visited a recently planted forest and then travelled on to another site to witness sustainable harvesting taking place. On the second day of the trip, the

FOREST CERTIFICATION IN ACTIONgroup were taken on a tour of James Jones & Sons Lockerbie sawmill to see the processes involved in transforming a log into a range of sawn timber products. This visit was designed to illustrate the value of Chain of Custody certification and demonstrate the rigorous processes involved in bringing certified wood to market.

This is the second time PEFC UK has taken stakeholders to see sustainable forest management in action. The feedback from participants was so positive that we are already planning for a field trip in 2015.

WOOD AWARDS UPDATE

The Wood Awards is the UK’s premier award scheme which recognises excellence in the use of timber in architecture, building design and furniture.

The Awards recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation using wood throughout the UK. This year has seen 262 individual

project entries – 155 buildings while the remainder are for furniture. The judges will be visiting building projects which made the shortlist over the summer while the furniture entries will be judged at 100% Design show in London in September.

The results will be announced at an event in Carpenters’ Hall in London in November.

This year, PEFC UK will be co-sponsoring the Wood Awards in

partnership with the Malaysian Timber Council.

To provide additional support

to companies and certification

bodies implementing and

maintaining PEFC Chain of

Custody certification, PEFC has

published a Guidance Document:

-Chain of Custody of Forest-

Based Products – Guidance for

Use. PEFC GD 2001:2014

This guide was developed through an open, transparent and consensus-based process, with input from a broad range of stakeholders. All PEFC documents, both guides and standards, are developed in this way to ensure that they reflect the latest consensus-based thinking.

The PEFC Chain of Custody Standard covers the requirements to implement a Chain of Custody for forest based products, as well as specifying the minimum management system requirements for the implementation and management of the Chain of Custody process. In addition, it includes minimum requirements on health, safety and labour issues.

The PEFC Chain of Custody Standard was revised last year following the implementation of the EUTR in March 2013. Through the new standard, PEFC Chain of Custody certified companies can also address the legality requirements entailed in the EUTR, with the additional benefit of being able to manufacture and sell PEFC-certified and labelled products.
