What is Performance Related Recording?

Arguably the most common music video, performance related recording is usually used in genres such as soft rock, punk and alternative

These music videos use locations such as live gigs, empty or abandoned warehouses, or a full stage

It is used to showcase the artist/artists musical ability to play an instrument

Smells Like Teen Spirit Nirvana

The video is located in an abandoned gymnasium and band is playing to an audience. This shows the personality of the band (rebellious) and makes them stand out in the rock genre because they went against the usually stage performance

Because the bad is not on a stage or an kind of raised flooring it puts them on the same level as their audience. This suggests that they are humble and haven’t pandered to the celebrity lifestyle and are still very much ‘normal.’

American Idiot Green Day

Even though this is a performance related music video there is no audience present. Instead the band perform directly into the camera making the camera and the people that will watch the video their audience.

This is a unique and original approach to PRR and could suggest that the band are interested in the music alone and connecting with their fans but they do not strive to be adored and idolised which is what tends to happen when people attend concerts.

The ScriptThe band has stuck with the more traditional method of being on stage when performing however instead of doing a common indoor venue performance it is outdoors

By being outdoors it suggests that both the song and the artists have a diverse audience

Reverse Lip Syncing

What is it? A process where the artist/s are lip

syncing but the location and background images and motions are moving backwards

In this music video the whole background movement and even the movement of Chris Martin himself is backwards but he is singing normally to the track

This gives an air of surrealism to the video and it also allows the audience to interpret the video in different ways.
