PASTOR’S CORNER 1 PARISH MINISTRIES

A TIME FOR FORGIVENESS

Please pray for the souls of

Mathew Albert Atunez & Dolores Salvados

May they Rest In Peace

An essen al ingredient of being a Chris an is to seek forgiveness and be a forgiver. I had a special expe-rience of forgiveness many years ago. I was on a train-ing program for a parish renewal. We were asked to join two others to pray for forgivenes and to forgive the three greatest hurts in our lives. I gravitated to two priests, one from Sea le and the other from Utah. We had never spoken before or since but what we experi-enced that evening was memorable. When I returned to the parish I didn't tell anyone what had happened but people began to say to me: "Father, you are differ-ent...what happened to you? “They could see that the change was more than spiritual...it was also physical.”

Why should we forgive? John Powell , S.J. said, "When we resent or hold grudg-es against anyone we become their slave. It is like we have a civil war inside our heads. Love and hate are like oil and water. They cannot mix. So, not forgiving inter-feres with our ability to love the people we love. Some-one else said: 'it is like swallowing poison and wai ng for the other person to die'.

Forgiveness and Scripture: Jesus said: You should forgive not seven mes but sev-enty mes seven mes. Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven; whose sins you shall retain they are retained. In chapter 15 of Luke's Gospel we have the parables of God's mercy. The lost sheep, the lost coin and the prodigal son. They all remind us that God's mercy is way beyond human reason. We are called not only to seek God's forgiveness but to be good forgiv-ers. In the Our Father we pray forgive us our sins as we forgive those who forgive us.

Advent Advent is the me to prepare ourselves to celebrate the coming of Jesus and the best way we can prepare our hearts to receive him is by celebra ng the Sacra-ment of Penance {confession}.

ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18th we will have a Penance Service at 7 pm.

Siempre Adelante

Study Ques on for the week: In James 2:1-4, He says to show no par ality as you hold the

faith of our Lord Jesus Christ. What does he mean?

Last week’s answer: What does James mean by saying that when you are only a

‘hearer’ of the word, you are deceiving yourself?)

James admonishes his readers that when we are only a ‘hearer’ of the word, we don’t truly accept it or under-stand it. When we claim to be followers of Christ that entails that accept His teaching. Christ was a doer. He healed the sick. He made the lame walk, the dear hear, the mute speak and the blind see. He forgave sins. He died for us. All of these are ac ons showing us in a very real and physical way that God is love and that He loves us. Being a disciple of Christ means showing His love to others…in words and ac ons. True understanding of His love is impossible without ac on and we are deceiving ourselves to think otherwise.

Catechism of the Catholic Church on Abor on

2270 Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of concep on. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.

2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abor on. This teach-ing has not changed and remains unchangeable. Di-rect abor on, that is to say, abor on willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law: you shall not kill the embryo by abor on and shall not cause the newborn to perish. Dear Parishioners,

Through the graciousness of several benefactors, we have now moved the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine from the wall next to the Holy Family Room to a newly created alcove in the Church. This was originally a confessional which was no longer usable and had become dead space. The appari ons of Our Lady to Juan Diego took place in 1531 while the Mexican territory was part of Spain. Interes ngly, this was the first and earliest ap-pari on of Our Lady approved by the Church, preda ng the Miraculous Medal (1830), Lourdes (1858) and Fa ma (1917). So when St. Julie Billiart who lived in France from (1751 – 1816) upon founding her community called the Sisters of Our Lady (Notre Dame) wished to wear a medal of Our Lady as part of her habit, the only medal approved by the Church at that me was the medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Fast forwarding to more recent

mes, Pope John Paul II invoked her as patroness of the unborn since in the Image she is depicted as pregnant. And in 1979 he called her the “Star of Evangeliza on.” As he knelt before her image John Paul II invoked her motherly assistance and called upon her as Mother of the Americas.

Mary’s words to Juan Diego can give comfort and solace to all of us who live in the Americas:

“I am the merciful Mother, the Mother of all of you who live united in this land, and of all mankind, of all those who love me, of those who cry to me, of those who seek me, of those who have confidence in me. Here I will hear their weeping, their sorrow, and will remedy and alleviate their suffering, necessi es, and misfortunes.” Sincerely, Sr. Kathleen Burns, SND
