Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace be to this house!' And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you; heal the sick in it and say to them, `The kingdom of God has come near to you.' From the Assistant Priest’s Desk Greetings:Saturday, 22nd June, 2013 the Feast Day of St. Alban, the first English martyr, history was being made in the Cathedral Church of St. James, Toronto, Canada. A Barbadian, the Venerable Peter Decourcey Fenty would be consecrated a bishop in the Church of God. On that glad day Peter was the first black man to be made a bishop in the Anglican Church of Canada. The service began at 10:15 with the procession of the clergy. At 10:30 the introit hymn resounded with praise and joy, peace and good will.

Who is the Rt. Rev’d Peter Fenty, Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of Toronto in the Episcopal Area of York Simcoe? A Barbadian born in St. Michael, resident of Bush Hall-Bank Hall. He was educated at the Roebuck Boys’ School, St. Leonard’s Secondary Boys’, Community College, UWI, Cave Hill, Codrington College, Huron College (Canada); Rector of St. Patrick, Christ the King, St. Matthias (Barbados), Rector of St. Lawrence Church, Montreal, Canada; Rector of St. Justin of Nazareth (Canada), Archdeacon of York, Executive Officer of the Archbishop of Toronto. With this background it took five Episcopal elections to gain entrance in the sixth to the Bench of Bishops.

Married to Angela Allman-Fenty, father of Andre and Peta Ann, father-in-law to Jacquelyn (wife of Andre), expectant grandfather, brother of Yvonne Chandler, David, Philip, Ian and James (his twin brother); son-in-law of the late Keith and Lucille Allman.

This is the man of history – Peter, now called to the apostolic order of Bishop. I sat in wonder and amazement as the service moved from section to section. Over 1200 persons attended from USA, Canada and the Caribbean. Our Episcopal Bench was represented by Bishop Howard Gregory of Jamaica, Errol Brooks of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba , exact contemporary of Peter at our alma mater Codrington College. Laish Boyd of Nassau, the Bahamas/ Turks/ Caicos. (Peter’s theological intern at St. Matthias). In the pulpit was our own and beloved bishop the most Rev’d and Dr. John W. D. Holder, CBE, one of the three “godly” band: William – John – Peter of the College 1971-1975. We will see him here in August on his vacation.

It was my privilege to be in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, England for the consecration of the Venerable Wilfred Wood of Barbados, the first black Bishop in the Church of England in the Mother Country.

When the Archbishop said: “ I present Peter bishop in the Church of God,” the congregation applauded for ten minutes. His family joined him at the chancel entrance for personal greetings. Included in this aspect was his future-son-in-law. His Episcopal attire was given by various churches and organizations in which Bishop Fenty was assigned.

God be praised – thankfully adored for His intervention in the history of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

On this day of your consecration, just imagine that you are packing a kit to take with you on this new and exciting journey. Maybe like returning to your place of birth and nurturing, Barbados.

Just ensure that in your kit are the following essentials for the Episcopal ministry:

Humility – To remind you that you can only plant and water, but God and God alone gives the growth.

Compassion – That allows you to embrace all of God’s children with his love, and reinforce the conviction that we all stand before God as his children in need of grace.

Wisdom – That helps you to make those critical decisions in your ministry that will keep the message of the Gospel the message of Jesus Our Lord high above all others.

An active vibrant prayer life –The foundation that helps you to keep it all – the good times and the bad times, the failures and the success, the frustration and the joy and satisfaction – keep it all anchored to God, convinced that his grace will always be sufficient for you.

May God pour his richest blessings upon you as you step into this exciting and challenging area of ministry.
