PRMAA Collection for Retired Priests Just a brief reminder – this weekend is our annual Priests’ Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) Collection. This is a very important collection to support the healthcare, wellness and retirement of those priests who have served the Archdiocese of Chicago in so many inspiring ways throughout the years. We have been blessed with many wonderful retired priests who have celebrated the sacraments at our Lemont Catholic churches including: Fr. Richard Shannon, Fr. Ed Upton and Fr. Lou Zake. Please be as generous as your means allow in supporting the PRMAA Collection. Religious Education Summer Intensive Our 4th Annual Religious Education Summer Intensive Program will begin on Monday, June 10th. The R.E. Summer Intensive is a two-week Religious Education program for 3rd – 6th Grade students from June 10th – 21st. Each class is from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and they include the same material that is presented to students throughout our traditional Religious Education year. Our Summer Intensive catechists are all excellent teachers of the faith and they are looking forward to sharing with our students the importance of the Catholic faith in our everyday lives.

RENEWMYCHURCHUPDATE On Saturday, June 1st, our Renew My Church Team joined Cardinal Cupich at St. Domatilla Church in Hillside for a morning of prayer and conversation. During the conversation section, Cardinal Cupich stated that the Renew My Church program will not be an easy change for many parishes, but the goal is to bring some vitality and hope to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Cardinal Cupich also mentioned that he often takes time to listen to the words of Pope Francis each week. Renew My Church has often referred to Pope Francis’s book, The Joy of the Gospel. In the book, Pope Francis states: “I dream of a ‘missionary option’, that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, languages and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation.” Those of us who were present at the meeting

were reminded that everything we do as a parish – our liturgies, our ministries, even our social gatherings – should all be to promote the importance of the Christian faith in the world. While I believe that the various programs that St. Alphonsus Church and the other Lemont Catholic parishes do wonderful work encouraging people to be inspiring Disciples, the Archdiocese of Chicago is focusing on a new form of promoting the faith. Let us pray that we will have the courage to accept our call as “missionaries of the faith”.

Welcome Guests and Visitors. . . We’re so glad that you’re here and invite you to join us in thanksgiving for God’s action in our lives. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. In this way, we believe that the Church is the sacrament of God’s saving presence in the world.

“Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult (the Mass does not end until the final blessing).

Worship reverently enough not to distract. Dress proudly enough not to offend.”

Father’s Day Shopping Online can Earn Donations for our Parish!

There is a growing trend for large brands and retail stores to donate a portion of every purchase to a charity of your choice. These donations are not added to your purchase price, but are

taken from the retailer’s own bottom line. These donations can now be directed to St. Alphonsus Parish! It’s easy. To make sure a portion of every purchase you make on Amazon goes to our parish, simply use smile.amazon.com instead of www.amazon.com. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to our parish. Same products, same prices, same service! Once on smile.amazon.com, under “Or pick your own charitable organization”, search for St. Alphonsus Parish. Select the one associated with the Lemont IL location, and START SHOPPING! It’s as simple as that!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we are at the fiftieth day of the Easter celebration: seven weeks of seven days, a week of weeks, now culminating in a festival fiftieth day. While the liturgical color of

the Easter season is gold, on this last day we have red. For the first thousand years of the church, there were no firm rules for using colors. Only wealthy churches could afford a full array of colors, and most places used the best vestments, no matter the color, for the

greatest feasts. The Church spelled out an exact plan for color, including red for Pentecost, only in 1570, but local differences held on until the 1800s.

Color experts tell us that red is a hot color, best used for fast-paced, upbeat, active experiences. It is hard to be neutral before red, as any matador will tell you. It invites

commitment, draws you in. It is a stimulating color, engaging the eye, stirring hunger. It is the most fitting color for this day when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit into our lives, a dynamic presence overturning neutrality in favor of passion and commitment.

Bethany Lutheran Church 500 Lemont St. Lemont, IL 60439 Dear St. Alphonsus Parishioners, Thank you for the donation of food to the Open Pantry at Bethany Lutheran Church. Your gifts help us to restock the pantry so that our clients may select the items they need from the shelves. As we are entering the slower time of the year for donations, we are most grateful for your contribution. Your generosity enables our clients to prepare meals for their families. Thank you for remembering the families of the Open Pantry. Bethany Open Pantry Committee

REGISTRATION FOR 2019-20 Application forms have been distributed to students. Contact the RE Office if you can’t locate your form. New families should contact the RE Office to register. We will be happy to assist you in setting your child on a journey with Christ within a supportive faith community. Visit our website, www.st-als.org, for information on our programs.

2-WEEK SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM Please keep our young people in your prayers over the next couple of weeks as they seek to grow in their faith.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BEING A CATECHIST? …and making a difference in the life of a child? Whether you are young, or young-at-heart! Now is your best chance to get the grade and track that best suits you. Come join us! Contact Kevin at the RE Office to discuss the possibilities.

FAMILY REFLECTIONS As our Summer Intensive RE Program begins this week, we would like to share with you some of the reflections that families related to their service projects and spiritual events they experienced over the past year. • After participating in a drive for shoes and bicycles, we became more aware of how many people are in need of basic things that we take for granted. • It was joyful to hear the choir’s Lenten Vespers Service. The songs were reflective and uplifting. They reminded us how lucky we are to be Catholic, and to be loved so much by God.

• We found out how easy it was to make a difference in the lives of children who are hungry and ill when we participated as a family in Feed My Starving Children project. We enjoyed working together as a family and as a community. • We like to go to the Living Stations of the Cross every year to better understand the suffering that Jesus endured for us, and to feel his presence through the prayers and music. • We learned how important it is to care for others, and to show how much we appreciate what first responders do for us when we made cards & cookies with the Hope & Friendship Foundation who gave them to the elderly, the homebound, and to Lemont police officers & firefighters.

Let’s Fill the Shelves… Food Pantry Update We greatly appreciate your continued support of our local food pantries. As the summer months approach, donations to the food pantries decline. Unfortunately, their need does not. With this in mind, we will break from featuring a “product of the month”. We ask that you continue to donate any items that you can. The products and monetary donations are so important. In August, we will return to our featured item request. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. You truly “Love thy neighbor!”

If you are expecting a baby, family and friends have showered you with gifts and you have, no doubt, furnished and decorated a nursery. In the same way your Catholic community, through the sacrament of Baptism, welcomes and offers spiritual strength and encouragement as your child begins a life-long journey of faith. Our Baptismal Preparation program, Journey of Faith: Birth, Baptism, Belonging, is a seminar that will help you better understand the sacrament of Baptism. The seminar can be taken while awaiting the birth of your child or shortly after the baby is born. The seminar will meet on a Saturday of alternate months from 9:00 am to Noon in the Religious Education Building. The Seminar dates for 2019 are: July 13th, September 14th, and November 9th. If you have not attended a baptismal preparation class at St. Alphonsus in the last three years, you must participate in a Baptism seminar. Baptisms are held the second and third Sundays of the month following the 11:00am Mass. Call the Parish Office at 630-257-2414 to schedule the baptism seminar along with your baptismal date.
