Curt’s Corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Gospel accounts of that first Easter Sunday morning raise all sorts of issues. To all appearances, Easter morning must have been a confusing, even frightening time. Jesus had just been killed by the state. Most of the disciples had scattered. When Mary Magdalen came to the tomb to pay her final respects, she finds the tomb empty. All the disciples were apparently unprepared to understand that Jesus was to rise. They were unprepared to accept God’s victory over sin and death.

Are we ready for God to conquer death in our lives? Or is this something wholly unexpected for us as well? Each of us has experienced loss (for me my father’s death is still very fresh), and sometimes it can be comforting to hold on to this loss. We want to visit the tomb. We remember the way things were. We see the burial garments are left in the tomb, as a symbol of a past that is no longer present. The disciples will not know Jesus in the same way again. He comes to them as the One who conquers all the forces of sin and death that tend to batter our hopes and dreams.

Easter calls us out of the darkness that covers our lives into the light of possibility, of healing, of re-creation. In His rising from the dead, Christ enables us to bring into our own lives all that He taught and lived throughout His life: the love, compassion, generosity, humility, and selflessness that overcomes hatred, prejudice, despair, greed and death.

It’s easy for us to find ourselves stuck in a Good Friday world: our problems seem overwhelming, and we struggle to cope. The demands of the world around us drain our energy and make it difficult to envision the purpose and worth of our lives. Being the best version of ourselves, as Matthew Kelly suggests, seems remote and a passing dream.

But we need to return to the tomb and the reality that God wants us to live and to feel the fullness of peace and happiness. God’s dream for us is not necessarily what the world offers us. Easter occurs during the springtime for a reason. As we read the signs in nature that life is bursting forth, God offers signs in our lives that our destiny is to live, and to live with gusto. We look to our faith community to help us and encourage us to read the signs. Without support and others to walk with us, we can easily forget the presence of the God life with us. Let’s pray that our Easter season can be a true celebration of who we are as God’s sons and daughters called to the freedom of love and mercy.

Easter joy comes in many forms. For me right now that joy comes in the persons who will be guiding our parish in the year to come. Fr. Joseph Nhat Le has been called by Cardinal Cupich to be the new pastor of St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish when I retire this July. Fr. Joe is presently associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville. He had been associate pastor of St. Raymond’s when I first arrived at St. Al’s. He is a genuinely warm, outgoing, and friendly priest. I know our people will love him.

The joy also comes in the form of Mrs. Janice DiVicenzo who will be accepting the role as principal of St. Alphonsus Liguori School. Janice comes to us with years of experience in both the Catholic School system as well as the public school system. Mrs. Chorazy and I are both confident that Janice will prove to be a wonderful leader for our school community as we continue to grow.

These are Easter realities. And each one of you brings to our parish the inner life of God that can change darkness into light.

How do we talk about morality in a world that no longer believes in truth? When we’re bombarded with

messages of “Be tolerant!” “Don’t Judge!” and “Coexist!” many good people feel afraid to say

anything is right or wrong anymore.

This 8-part study program gives us an important key to responding to relativism effectively—a Catholic moral worldview. Learn how Catholic morality is all about love, how making a judgment is not judging a

person’s soul, and how, in the words of Pope Francis, “relativism wounds people” and is

“the spiritual poverty of our times.”

Begins Wednesday, April 4 • 7:00pm Narthex Meeting Room C

To Register call 847-255-7452 • Cost: $10 for study guide

THE NEWMAN SINGERS ARE COMING TO ST. ALPHONSUS WEEKEND OF APRIL 7-8, 2018!

The Newman Singers, a liturgical and concert group from the Newman Catholic Student Center in Iowa City, Iowa, have toured the country for the past fifteen years, building a reputation for leadership in contemporary liturgical and inspirational music. They have appeared at churches, schools, and conventions, presenting concerts, giving workshops on liturgical music, youth ministry and youth choirs, and leading congregations in liturgy. Their ten recorded collections of liturgical music, written by their founder and director, Joe Mattingly, are used in parishes, schools and institutions throughout the country. Their mission is to spread the gospel with spirit and music. Throughout the past fifteen years the Newman Singers have led congregations and audiences across the country in worship, inspired them in concert, and enriched the faith life of all they have ministered to with their music. In the words of those who have heard them, "The Newman Singers presentations are an experience that touch people to their very souls."

Joe Mattingly and the Newman Singers will be leading the music right here at the liturgies at

St. Alphonsus on Divine Mercy weekend: Saturday, April 7 at 5 p.m. Mass, and Sunday April 8 at 8:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and

Sunday, April 8 is Divine Mercy Sunday!

This could be the greatest gift you give to yourself all year!

Each Year on the first Sunday after Easter, the Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast established by John Paul II and given by our Lord through a series of revelations to St. Faustina Kowalska, a poor Polish nun. Those who celebrate this feast are promised a com-plete pardon of sin, including any temporal punishment (Purgatory) due for forgiven sin! In this Year of Mercy, why not plan to obtain this “ocean of graces” poured out from our Merciful Risen Christ!

St. Alphonsus will host a Holy Hour Sunday, April 8 at 1:00pm in the church. Please… join us for this wonderful opportunity to wipe clean your slate of sins and begin anew! For more information about Divine Mercy Sunday, St. Faustina, and the promises of our Lord to those who observe this feast day, please visit: http://www.thedivinemercy.org/message/

LISTEN/TALK: THE FOURTH CUP, by Dr. Scott Hawn ABOUT: Well-known Catholic theologian explains Christ's Paschal Sacrifice on the Cross as the fulfillment of the traditional fourth cup used in the celebration of the Jewish Passover meal. He draws a symbolic parallel to the Last Supper and Christ's death on Calvary. Through his scholarly insights & important biblical connections, the Mass will come alive for you as never before! TESTIMONIAL: “Just finished the Forth cup. Excellent reading and I love Dr. Hawn’s talks and books...as a cradle Catholic I have to say I wish I had not wasted so many years ignoring such a beautiful faith but thanks to our Protestant converts like Scott he is giving Catholics such great gifts to allow us to rekindle our faith again.”

LISTEN/TALK: OCEAN OF MERCY ABOUT: At the dawn of the twentieth century, three voices rose up from Poland to proclaim an urgent message, a message powerful enough to alter the course of an age plunging into spiritual darkness. Filmed on location in more than twenty cities across Poland and the United States, this true story examines and chronicles the phenomenal lives and spiritual legacy of St. Faustina Kowalska, St. Maximilian Kolbe, and Pope St. John Paul II, modern day "Apostles of Mercy." TESTIMONIAL: “VERY GOOD MOVIE!!! These 3 people are our great Saints. They were humble servants of God. Each one of them followed Christ's teaching of total selfless & sacrifice to humanity… My first movie on Formed. Registered earlier this evening. THANK YOU!!!!!”

WATCH/ANIMATED: BROTHER FRANCIS, HE IS RISEN (For Children) ABOUT: (1)An animated presentation of key points in the life of Jesus Christ, His Death on the Cross, triumph over death, and Ascension to the Father (2)A visual representation of how we celebrate Holy Week and the Easter Triduum; (3)"He Is Risen!"—a joyful, visualized song that fills our hearts with praise to God. TESTIMONIAL: Using for our weekly catechism classes. Recommending them for our Sunday Preschool too. Love these children resources on Formed, keep them coming. Grandparents & parents love showing them at home. Perfect 30 minute length to keep little ones attention and very informative for Holy Week celebrations. Thanks and God bless.
