Curt’s Corner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . St. Paul writes in the second reading today: “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength” (I Cor. 1:25). In other words we have a great deal to learn about God’s ways versus our ways. For the Jews, who expect signs, and for the Greeks, who seek wisdom, a crucified Messiah makes no sense. A crucified King is a sign of contradiction. But Paul argues to the Christians at Corinth that God’s apparent failure manifests power and what looks foolish is truly wisdom; that the absurdity of the cross reflects the wisdom of God who upends the world’s expectations: humility and service reveal true power and authority. Six weeks of Lent is not nearly enough time to begin to grasp what God is saying to us in Christ. How foolish it is as Christians to think about welcoming the stranger, the outcast, the poor, the forgotten, the refugee, and the sinner. Doing that is never going to push us toward success in this world. It’s not going to give us our place among those who have power and control. The agenda of God turns our lives inside out. For the rest of the world at this time of year, our practices of daily prayer, our fasting, and our generos-ity to the poor and needy seem outdated and senseless religious piety. Yet for us to begin to grasp who God is for us and the gift that Jesus can be, we need to open ourselves to a different set of behaviors, ones that acknowledge we are not gods unto ourselves, that we are not in control, and that happiness and fulfillment only happen by letting go and not by grasping and controlling. The Gospel today is from John and reveals a Christ of deep emotion, one who zealous for people to be free to know and approach God with confidence and hope. Jesus reveals the reason for His anger in the analogy between the temple building and His body. The space that was meant to be reserved for being with God, for encountering God, had been relegated to supporting a religious system. The Law was a gift as the psalms declare, something precious and inspiring. But so many people were caught up in material things, even the material they used to worship God, rather than being caught up in God. Jesus refers to His own body as the temple. Our bodies through Christ are also temples for God. We the Church, the Body of Christ, are collectively a temple for God. As we hear this story about the cleansing of the Temple what is God telling us about how important it is to keep my “inner room” free to encounter God? What is God telling us through this story about how deeply God desires that space for encounter with us?

Lent cannot be business as usual. It is our time as sons and daughters of God, temples of the Spirit of God, to acquaint ourselves ever more intimately with God’s desire for us and our own longing for a deep relationship in God’s love. There are so many other things we can be doing. But the temple is there. God is there. The invitation to enter the sacred space within is there. We find ourselves as we find the God in us.

St. Alphonsus and St. Thomas Becket Present: 2018 Lenten Mission

March 4, 5, 6 ♦ 7:00pm - 8:30pm St. Alphonsus Liguori Church

Facilitated by Dr. Mary Amore

Join us for three spiritually uplifting evenings.

Sunday, March 4: “Responding to God ”

As a young Jewish girl, Mary found the grace and courage to say yes to the Lord when asked her to be the mother of Jesus. Each day we, too, are presented with opportunities to say yes to God,

how do we respond? In this session, we will explore how the life of our Mary inspires us to offer our fiat to the Lord.

Monday, March 5: “Living with Steadfast Faith”

As the mother of Jesus, Mary’s life was not easy. In this presentation, we will explore the ways that the life of our Blessed Mother challenges us to live each day with unfailing faith in God.

Tuesday, March 6: “Finding Hope in the Darkness”

Mary’s life took her from the cradle to the cross. In this session we will discuss how our Blessed Mother’s life invites us to carry our crosses with hope and trust in the workings of the Lord.

Dr. Mary Amore holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Catholic Theological Union. Dr. Amore is the author of Primary Symbols of Worship and the Call to Participation and the newly released DVD entitled Eucharist: A Journey to Transformation, Healing and Discipleship. A Cardinal Bernardin Scholar and distinguished member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, Mary is a highly sought after presenter of parish missions in the area of the Eucharist and Pope Francis Year of Mercy, plus workshops, seminars and retreats. A monthly columnist at Ministry and Liturgy Magazine, Dr. Amore also serves as the full time Executive Director of Mayslake Ministries in Downers Grove, Il. Mary is a wife, mother and grandmother!

Hospitality to follow each night’s presentation, including a “Meet and Greet” with Dr. Amore!

Benedict has written previously about faith and sorrow (Arise from Darkness) and seeks in this book to study catastrophes of all different kinds in relationship to our faith in divine providence, in God’s goodness and mercy, and finally in the light of Christ’s suffering and death. TESTIMONIAL: “PRAYERS….Excellent book about suffering and helpful prayers. Thank you Fr. Benedict Groeschel… Very inspiring audio book.” WATCH/MOVIE (30 Min): CATHOLIC HEROES OF THE FAITH: THE STORY OF ST PERPETUA ABOUT: A young woman willingly takes a stand of faith and challenges the Roman Empire. Born to a noble Roman family, Perpetua converts to Christianity when she is irresistibly drawn to the example of unselfish love and service that she witnesses in the local believers…arrested and tried, Perpetua takes a valiant stand that echoes down through the centuries. TESTIMONIAL: “INSPIRING. GOOD FOR KIDS AND ADULTS. Our three year old asked to watch it again right away. It is a bit heavy for a three year old, but my wife and I had not actually known the story of Perpetua and company. It was very inspiring and powerful for us to watch.” LISTEN/TALK: (55 Min) 15 THINGS TO DO IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING ABOUT: Suffering is a mystery we all face at some time in our lives. Whether it is physical, emotional, or spiritual, it may test our faith. Internationally known speaker Jeff Cavins shares personal insights he gained through his own physical pain. He shows us how we can join our sufferings with those of Jesus on the Cross, bringing renewed meaning to the suffering we experience in our lives. TESTIMONIAL: “ENLIGHTENMENT THROUGH SUFFERING…I never thought of suffering in the manner Jeff Cavins describes it. I always sought to fight suffering which is fruitless. When you embrace it as Jesus Christ did, it becomes bearable and enlightening.”
