Doreen Kelly, Pastoral Associate . . . . . Dear Friends,

I believe in the Kingdom of God. I believe it is real, and I believe this differently now than I did earlier in my life. I’ll tell you that story in a minute. In today’s Gospel Jesus continues to engage us with stories that explain his Father in analogies; today’s story is about the Kingdom.

Analogy number 1: The Kingdom of God is like a treasure, something precious and unexpected. One who discovers the treasure feels great joy, so much joy, in fact, that the finder is moved to change his/her life, to forget about everything else and wrap his/her life around the treasure. Jesus, who is God-come-into-the-world, is that kind of treasure. When he walked the earth, people who encountered him dropped what they were doing and followed him. They listened to him, hoped that he would glance their way, traveled great distances just to be near him; his presence was that gripping. Jesus filled their hearts and soothed them in unexpected and amazing ways. For many people, a experience of the Kingdom of God changes their lives, teases out the sources of that unique feeling of pure love, and makes everything they thought important so un-treasure-like. Even a brief glimpse of the Kingdom can drive some people to reassess, to get rid of the distractions, and to, in essence, “purchase the field” where they found the treasure.

Analogy number 2: The Kingdom of God is like a merchant seeking a “pearl of great price.” It’s easy for us here to let our focus rest on the pearl, but the key factor in this analogy is the merchant. He/she is looking hard for something that he/she truly knows is in existence out there somewhere. The merchant won’t rest until the pearl is found because in the merchant’s eyes, there is nothing more valuable than this pearl and having it in his/her care is the goal. Jesus was like the merchant. He searched, but not for pearls that were already lustrous and obvious. Jesus searched for the pearls that were mud covered and lost deep in the muck of life. He recognized their true beauty and worth. He called them from lake shores, out of trees, at wells, on sickbeds and deathbeds, and then used his compassion and mercy to uncover the luster that nobody else could see. The Kingdom is a living energy that searches for us, because being created in the image and likeness of God is like having a homing beacon implanted in each of us that calls out to our God, who is our merchant and never ceases from searching for us.

Analogy number 3: The Kingdom of God is like a net that scoops up everything and holds it, both the good stuff and the mess, all without breaking. Jesus did that. He took people as they came. He didn’t ask or demand that they change; he showed them the pure love that is the Kingdom life. Like the unbreakable net, he stretched his arms out wide and held us all, our good qualities and our personal hot messes. Even in his death, he created the possibility that we could be forgiven and come home to the Lord; that’s how strong his net remained. In his great love for us, he even warned us that God expects us to respond to the pure love that is offered in the Kingdom life. We can choose to embrace it, live in it, or to turn away – and that will be sorted out in the end.

Why do I believe in the Kingdom like I do? Having grown up a cradle Catholic and the product of Catholic education, my faith in my early 20s was a neatly compiled belief system in a God who rewards us for being good, that is, following the Catholic rules. I thought goodness equaled some protection from bad things happening. On July 26, 1985, my Mom, who was only 43 years old, passed away suddenly from a brain aneurysm. As you can imagine, this blew up my theory of faithfulness = only the good stuff. My neatly constructed faith ended up being more like a movie set – nice on the outside but tenuous at the roots, which is not untypical for a 23-year-old believer. My faith had never been tested. Well, the test began with a serious descent into the muck of sadness, confusion, anger, feeling abandoned and in immense pain. I functioned in the muck for quite some time, still attended Mass, did the Catholic things, but felt like I was alone in a pit of darkness. In time some new friends invited me to meet Jesus in the scriptures in a way I never had before. These friends discovered my pain, sought after my heart, and carefully held my mix of good stuff and mess. My friends WERE JESUS at this time in my life, and THIS was my real introduction to the Kingdom. Their love was fueled by the Holy Spirit and shared with me as the love of Jesus – who came down into my pit and lifted me out of my muck, uncovered the pearl that is my heart, cleaned it off to let it shine from its core, revealing for me how God exists in my heart and I exist in God’s.

We experience the Kingdom in glimpses here as the pure love of Jesus coming to us through people in our lives. A greater experience of the Kingdom awaits us when we are face to face with our God…who is all three things: treasure, seeker, and holder of all. Now, what is your Kingdom story?

God’s peace be in your hearts this week! Doreen Kelly

Parking Lot Mass Participation

to Receive Eucharist

We invite you to participate in Sunday, 8:30am Mass by parking your vehicle in the back lot.

We changed to 8:30am that you can enjoy Mass

during the cooler part of the day! Please park your vehicle along the south side of church across from the portico.

While in your vehicle, you can access an audio feed of the Mass by tuning your

car radio to frequency FM88.1. (This Mass is not live–streamed.)

At the time for distribution of the Eucharist, an assistant will come out ahead of the Eucharistic Minister with hand sanitizer. Even though you are in your car, please put on a mask at this time. You will need to roll down your car windows and hold out both

your hands with your palms up. The assistant will spray your hands with hand sanitizer. Then the Eucharistic Minister will give you communion. The Eucharistic

Minister will be wearing a face covering/mask and a face shield.

The assistant will also be carrying a basket for offerings should you wish to make your Sunday donation in this way.

Please be patient because it will take some time to get to each person. Thank you for the prayers you have offered for our parish already! We know God hears them because we

could not have come this far without them!
