Fr. Joe . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dear Sisters and Brothers of Saint Alphonsus Family, The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord that we celebrate this weekend reminds us of some important truths about our Christian faith. By going back to heaven, Jesus does not abandon His disciples or us, but He continues to be present with us in different forms and ways. Jesus continues to speak to us in the Bible, to touch us through the Sacraments, through the ministers of the Church, and to come to us in the Eucharist. In other words, Jesus is always here with us, but we need to recognize and embrace Him with our faith. The ascension marks the completion of Jesus’ mission on earth. Jesus reveals to us the whole pattern of our Christian journey which is through the incarnation, mission, passion, death, resurrection, and ascension. If we follow Jesus through this path, we will end up like Him in glory. Indeed, Jesus shows us the way, and He is the way. And finally, the Ascension of Jesus brought about the coming of the Holy Spirit who is truly in charge of Jesus’ Church and her mission. The Holy Spirit continues to guide, illuminate, and empower us, so we can embrace Jesus’ command to proclaim His Good News to the whole world. The feast of the Ascension marks the end of Jesus’ mission on earth. This month of June reminds me that I have come to the end of my first year doing the ministry at Saint Alphonsus. At the retreat I had attended two weeks ago, I had a chance to stop and reflect on my ministry here. I realized that the Lord truly blesses me with many good people in the Parish. I was very nervous when I first came, but now I feel more and more confident because I know that you love and support me. As we continue our journey together with many challenges and obstacles in front of us, I strongly believe that if we continue to trust in God and work together, we will make it. At the end of this letter, I would like to let you know some sad news as well as good news. Kathy McGourty has resigned from the position after many years serving our Youth Ministry because of a family commitment. Kathy is truly a wonderful minister who has embraced, empowered and led our youth to grow and to make a difference in our community and in the society. We are grateful to Kathy with all the positive influence she has made with our teens. I have another difficult task to do now: to look for another Youth Minister. I hope and pray that God will send us one. I wish that someone in our parish who has a big heart for our youth would step up to take over this important ministry. The good news is that Doreen Kelly is our new staff member beginning July 1st. Doreen is not new to us because she has spent the whole year doing her internship at our church. She already knows many people and many ministries at our church. She is the co-coordinator of the combined RCIA program with Pam Platt consisting of three parishes: Saint Emily, Saint Alphonsus, and Saint Thomas. Recently she takes on the Family Mass which encourages more and more families to be involved. Let us welcome Doreen and work with her for the mission of our parish. May God bless and continue to guide us as we move forward to building the Kingdom of God in our community. Sincerely,

Stewardship, Returning Our First Fruits . . . The Usher Ministry

provides a great way to serve a very important

role here at St. Alphonsus!

In addition to Ushers greeting parishioners with a warm smile making them feel welcomed and

appreciated, they have diverse duties that are vital to Mass running smoothly.

Men and women age 18+ are needed to serve as Ushers at Mass. We are looking for reliable,

energetic, caring people for Saturdays at 5:00pm, and Sundays at 8:30am.

If you are interested in training to become an

Usher or have any questions, contact Curt, Head Usher, at 847-392-2337.

ST. ALPHONSUS TREASURE SHARING IDEAS:

Thank you for your regular ongoing giving. Your support makes a difference in the

life of our church! The good work done every day by the clergy, ministries, and organizations of St. Alphonsus parish only happens because of the regular and faithful generosity of you, our parishioners through cash, check, and online giving. A “Qualified Charitable Distribution” from your IRA generates neither taxable income, nor a tax deduction while satisfying ALL or PART of your RMD. For more information, please contact Margaret Turansky of the Stewardship Council at 847-797-0877 and/or your tax advisor.

SPRED Ministry is Looking

for Catechists

The St. Alphonsus SPRED Ministry is looking for adult catechists in this program for our 11-16 year old children with developmental disabilities. "SPRED" is short for "SPecial REligious Development. A one day training is provided. SPRED catechesis leads one to

develop a sense of the sacred, a sense of the Church, a sense of the Christ and a sense of God. The process

used helps our friends prepare for their sacraments and enter a communion with Jesus and the Christian

community of Faith. Through bonds of friendship within our group, the catechists in a community setting enable our friends through activities, songs, symbols,

gestures and sharing of a meal together, to discover for themselves that they are in the presence of God in an

original life situation as it unfolds symbolically. If you are interested in this wonderful ministry or have

questions, please email Kathy at [email protected]
