Flem ing Wild cats End EHS Foot ball Sea sonBy Dawna Weirich

On a cold, cold Fri dayNo vem ber night un derthe lights at Eads, the ea -gles would watch theirfoot ball sea son un raveland come to an end. Thismatchup was a semi-fi nalgame to see who wouldplay Idalia in the 6 mancham pi on ship the nextweek. It was the Wild catsfrom Flem ing that wouldcome out and start thegame ready to play rack -ing up 24 un an sweredpoints quickly in the firstquar ter. Eads would getinto the ballgame in thesec ond quar ter and would start play ing some foot -ball. Eads would score 22points in the sec ond quar -ter go ing in to the lockerroom at halftime thescore was 30-22 in fa vor ofFlem ing. The fans werehop ing with a chance forthe Ea gles to warm-up inthe locker room dur inghalf time Eads would rally and come out on top at the end of the game. The fanswere dis ap pointed alongwith the play ers as Flem -ing could do no wrong thesec ond half and Eadscould do noth ing right.Fum bles, missed tack les,any thing that could gowrong did for Eads. Thesec ond half of play Flem -ing would gain an other 44points on the score boardand Eads would n’t gain

an other point. The scoreat the end of the con testwas 74-22 in fa vor ofFlem ing. Scor ing forEads was AustonRandolph and BertGutierrez, lead ing tack ler for the night wasRandolph with 6 solo tack -les and Cory Miller andDan iel Weirich each hav -ing 4 a piece. Randolphwas the lead ing rusherfor the night with 183yards on 26 car ries. Scor -ing for Flem ing was, soph o more Ty lerVanderbark and, se niorJustin Stone with threetouch downs a piece, ju -nior Casey Henry andsoph o more TrevorChintala each with twotouch downs. Ju nior An -drew Lightsey kept hisright foot busy kick ingextra points and was good for 7 out of 10 conversionson the night.

For Eads, the sea sonmay have come to an endbut the fu ture could n’tlook brighter for thisteam. They are a younggroup, with win ning at ti -tudes, lots of po ten tialand if they put in the workin the weight room and incon di tion ing they will seegreat things in the foot -ball sea sons to come. Re -turn ing for Eads nextyear will be 2 fresh men,10 soph o mores and 2 ju -niors and with an eighth

grade class com ing in asfresh men next year alsowith lots of potential.

The one lone se nior forthis year is AustonRandolph. What a hugecon tri bu tion Auston hasbeen to the Eads Foot ballteam for the last twoyears. When Kit Car sondis cov ered two years ago, that the school would nothave enough to fill a ros -ter for a six man foot ballteam, the de ci sion wasmade for those that stillwanted to play foot ball, would play for Eads. Theteam from Eads ac cepted the new mem bers fromKit Car son and they haveproved that they can playthe game to gether. In histwo years in Eads, Auston has played nu mer ous po -si tions, from quar ter back, de fen sive back, half back, kick and punt re turner, and most im por tantly hasproved to be a leader. This year Auston put up somelarge num bers andproved that his shoes willbe hard ones to fill nextyear. In his role as quar -

ter back he would com -plete 13 for 22 and passedfor 212 yards. Of fen sively,Randolph had 101 car riesfor a to tal of 929 rush ingyards, and av er aged 92.9yard per game, Austonwould prove to be deadlyfrom the air also he wouldhave 11 re cep tions for ato tal of 326 yards. Hescored 33 touch downs forthe year. De fen sively, heagain con trib uted greatly, lead ing the team in tack -les with 78 solo and as sist -ing on 42 also. On kick offre turns he had 15 re turnsfor 418 yards and punt re -turns he had 4 re turns for74 yards. Auston, thankyou for your con tri bu tions to Eads football, and goodluck in your future.

This will wrap up thefoot ball sea son for Eads;how ever bas ket ball andwres tling will be gin thisweek end. Eads bas ket -ball will have their sea sonopener at home on Fri day night with Fowler be gin -ning at 4 p.m. They willtravel to Crowley Countyon Sat ur day with ac tion

be gin ning at 2:00. Thewres tlers will be in Chey -enne Wells at the Ti gerIn vi ta tional. So again, there are still plenty ofhigh school sports to keep ev ery one busy on aFriday and Saturday.

nied by a men tor. Men tors can hunt with a youth only if they hold a late-sea sonli cense that is valid for the same unit and dates asthe youth li cense. Thosewho turn 18 af ter pur -chas ing the orig i nal li -cense are still el i gi ble tohunt during a late season.

In ad di tion, reg u la tionsfor the late-sea son youthhunts may dif fer fromreg u lar sea sons. So theDOW strongly en cour -ages youth hunt ers andtheir men tors to read the2010 Col o rado Big GameHunt ing Bro chure tocheck the reg u la tions and the late sea son dates forthe GMU where they willbe hunt ing. Hunt ers arealso re minded to be surethat they know the bound -aries of the GMU. Latesea sons in some units are for pri vate land only, sohunt ers must have per -mis sion from the land -owner be fore going ontothose properties.

“Adults and youth mustknow the spe cific reg u la -tions that ap ply dur ingthese late sea sons and inthese units,” Basagoitiasaid. “Be sure to read thereg u la tions in the hunt ing bro chure and get a goodmap so you know the lo ca -tion of the GMU. Hunt erswho vi o late the rules canlose their hunt ing andfish ing privileges.”

The youth li censes can -not be used for spe cialdis tri bu tion man age ment hunts.

A 2010 Big Game Bro -chure can be picked up atany DOW of fice or li censeagent. The bro chure canalso be viewed at theDOW’s web site at:http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunt

Gov ern ment & Com men taryLet ter to the Ed i tor

Dear Ed i tor,As Dick Scott once again

tries to make a fool out ofme when it co mes to trans -mis sion lines, I’d like toclar ify a few things. First, the maps that he re fers to in last week’s Com mis sionerMin utes as “ex hib its orsche mat ics only” came di -rectly from the Xcel En ergywebsite and say Xcel En -ergy clearly in black andwhite at the top of eachone. They aren’t some thingI just pulled out of a hat. These lines, with tow ers astall as grain el e va tors,

might not fol low the ex ist ing line that crosses 37 of usin West ern Ki owa County, but they’ll sureas heck cross through Ki -owa County some where!Who ever they cross will in -cur the dam age I’ve talkedabout be fore. Your land willbe de val ued by 1/3, yourmin er als will be ren dereduse less, and if what theyof fer does n’t seem to beenough for you, em i nentdo main will step in. If Xcelwas con sid er ing any otherroutes, why don’t they havemaps show ing other “ex hib -its and sche mat ics”? Comeon Dick, get a clue! Be foreyou all sign the Land UsePer mit for them with outask ing our opin ion, did theybother tell ing you that onceyou do, you for feit all con -

trol? Just in case you did n’tbe lieve them, I’ll be happyto show you the re searchmy self. Just have Peggy call me.

Next, ac cord ing to in for -ma tion sub mit ted by XcelEn ergy re gard ing Sen ate Bill 07-100, which was passedto im ple ment mea sures toen sure the ad e quacy of Col -o rado’s trans mis sion in fra -struc ture, as rel e vant to this fil ing, SB 07-100 re quiresthat rate-reg u lated elec tricutil i ties, such as Pub lic Ser -vice, on or be fore Oc to ber31st of each odd num beredyear des ig nate En ergy Re -source Zones, which leg is -la ture de fines as “a geo -graphic area in whichtrans mis sion con straintshin der the de liv ery of elec -tric ity to Col o rado con sum -ers, the developement ofnew elec tric gen er a tion fa -cil i ties to serve Col o radocon sum ers, or both.” Af ter2007, Xcel En ergy re -mapped the ERZs to in -crease them from fourzones to five to en sure thateach county would bein ONE ZONE ONLY. In aper sonal email fromRick Thomp son, (the sameRick Thomp son from Xcelthat met with the Com mis -sion ers), he told me that Ki -owa County is unique be -cause it is in THREE zones.Given the fact that there are no pro posed re new able en -ergy pro jects for West ernKi owa County, this willopen the door for EVENMORE trans mis sion linesin the fu ture. Look ahead

20 years, af ter these Com -mis sion ers have for feitedall con trol and are longgone, leav ing some one elseto try and clean up theirmess.

Next, I gather that Com -mis sioner Scott never gets a chance to read the PuebloChieftan. If he did, hewould know that TrincheraRanch, the larg est pri vateem ployer in Costilla County, is do ing ev ery thing they can to pre vent Xcel from string -ing power lines acrossthem. Ap par ently, he’snever heardof ThreeCounties.org ei ther. Ifso, he would know that thisor ga ni za tion is “ded i catedto pre serv ing the rights ofprop erty own ers in Elbert,El Paso and Lin coln Coun -ties.” There goes Lin colnCounty again—do ing ev ery -thing they can to pro tecttheir land own ers. Theywould never ex pect theirland own ers to fur nish sucha stag ger ing amount ofpower to Den ver and theFront Range with no ben e fitto them, and have Xcel sellthe ex cess to New Mex ico. These lines, once again, will be 345-kV for a dis -tance of 120 miles, (1kV=1000volts), and1500-2000 MW (1MegaWatt=1,000,000 watts). There will be two seperatelines; Lamar to Co man chePower Plant in Pueblo, and Lamar to Mis sile Sitenorth east of Dear Trail.

Al though Com mis sionerScott still as sures us thatnoth ing is yet afoot, their

ac tions speak louder thanwords. I learned from Com -mis sioner Oswald that theytook the new Land Use Pol -icy and packet that Tri-stateGen er a tion sent them to the county at tor ney two weeksago, af ter meet ing withTri-State, Xcel and South -east Power. Why was thisnec es sary if they aren’t ne -go ti at ing? If Mr.Barningham from Tri-Statewants a let ter of sup port ora res o lu tion from the Com -mis sion ers, this tells methat my ef forts to in form the pub lic were n’t in vain. Ittells me that the PUC wasin un dated with let ters fromKi owa County res i dentssay ing we don’t want orneed these lines in Ki owaCounty. If any thing, theCom mis sion ers should bewrit ing a let ter say ing thesame thing.

Rod and Don ald both toldme that they have no powerto stop these lines. Theyhave no busi ness be ingCom mis sion ers of thiscounty if they don’t knowany better. In truth, they arethe only ones with thepower to stop it, but they in -vited them to come in. Ifthey were n’t hold ing all thecards, Mr. Barninghamfrom Tri-State would n’t bebeg ging for let ters or res o -lu tions from them.

It’s time these guysstarted giv ing us the re spect and con sid er ation we, astheir con stit u ents, de serve. They have no busi ness call -ing for any thing that af fectsthe land own ers in thiscounty. They own no land. They have noth ing toloose. We can all look for -ward to a com plete up -heaval in this ad min is tra -tion in 2012. I’m sure wecan find two can di dateswho share the same phi los -o phy as Bill Koehler—-thatev ery thing needs to bebrought out in the open be -fore any cru cial de ci sionsare made.

Hope fully,Michelle Wyckoff
