Swimmers urged to take careWITH the recent warm weather, thousands of residents and visitorshave flocked to beaches and swim-ming pools, and the City has urgedall bathers to exercise caution.

Councillor Tandeka Gqada, May-oral Committee Member for Com-munity Services, says: “Our life-guards are patrolling the beachesand public pools in full force and allbathers must please adhere to theirinstructions for their own safety.“Residents are reminded that alco-hol is not permitted on beaches or atpublic swimming pools. This rulewill be strictly enforced because theconsumption of alcohol on beachesoften leads to drowning incidents,”Gqada says. “Beach and swimmingpool users must please take respon-sibility for their safety by familiaris-ing themselveswith the safety guide-lines and rules below before usingany of the beaches or public swim-ming pools.”

She reminded people of the follow-ing beach safety guidelines:

. Read and obey the beach regula-tions and follow instructions or ad-vice from lifeguards.

. Do not enter the sea if you can-not swim.

. Only swim in areas supervisedby a lifeguard – usually a zone be-tween two red and yellow flags.

. Never swim alone.

. Swim parallel to the shore if youwish to swim a long distance.

. Supervise children closely, evenwhen lifeguards are present. A per-sonal floatation device is recom-mended for children.

. If caught in a rip current, swimsideways until free and do not swimagainst the pull of the current.

. Don’t dive into unfamiliar wa-ters – what may seem deep could bevery shallow.

. If you are in trouble in the sea,

shout or wave to signify that youneed help.

Lifeguards are always on duty atall of the City’s 36 public swimmingpools.

Bathers must adhere to their in-structions at all times and approachthem with any safety queries thatthey may have, she said. “I wouldlike to thank all lifeguards and safetypersonnel for their dedication overthe Christmas and New Year peri-od”, she added.

PSA member makes a difference in educationAS PART of its back-to-schoolcampaign, Proudly South Afri-can has lauded three membercompanies making a positive dif-ference in education, the lives ofchildren and in job creation.

This week, People’s Post spoke toChanine Nel, owner of Rock Series, which specialises in supplyingschools with mathematics andreading program software fromGrades 0 to 10. Rock Series wasfounded in 2004 by Chanine, whowas inspired tomakeadifference inthe lives of the youth.

What products do you supplyto schools?

We create mathematics and read-ing programs for the children inSouth Africa. All lessons are ex-plained step by step in full colour

with audio, allowing the children towork in a stress-free environmentand even in the comfort of theirhome. The product range compris-es of mathematics, reading and anelectronic dictionary (with Zuluwords included) and several educa-tional games to stimulate growthand development.

We also have self-marking testswhich can assist parents withrecord keeping. We don’t know ofany other program in the world thathas all these three products pack-aged as one unit.

What is great about your pro-gram and business?

The Rock Series program enablesus to assist previously disadvan-taged schools and orphanages withtheir schooling academic needs andthis gives them the confidence to

grow into self assured children andpeople.

What are some of the high-lights of your business?

We had the honour of helpingNOAH (an Aids orphanage) along-side ABB, an international compa-ny.

Why did you join the ProudlySouth African campaign?

As a small business it is very im-portant to have the Proudly SouthAfrican brand behind us.

People in South Africa want toknow where products are made andwant to support locally made highquality products. South Africanparents want to know that South Af-rican developers understand thechallenges facing our children ineducation.

What are your goals for 2012?We would like to employ 10-20

more agents. If they each sell 10units they could earn R10 000-plusper month. In this way we can make

a positive impact on job creation inSA. Rock Series is also a part of the“93 000 jobs for Mandela Day’’ cam-paign and would like to create em-ployment through education.

THE Proudly South African “BuyLocal” campaign has welcomednews that over 100 000 new jobswere created in December.

Reacting to the results of the Ad-corp Employment Index releasedrecently, Proudly SA CEO LeslieSedibe said: “We welcome the an-nouncement, given South Africa’scurrent unemployment figures andthe world economic climate. Let’sdo all we can as a nation to encour-

age this trend in 2012.”According to the index, 103 327

new jobs were created in December2011 – the fastest rate of growth innine months.

It’s also the first time since 2009that no sectors reported a decline inemployment. The index also showsthat all employment categories re-

ported growth in December, withthe fastest being temporary work(15 percent) and permanent jobs(six percent).

“Our campaign encourages con-sumers to buy local products anduse local services to help createjobs.

“In 2012, we continue to call on

South Africans to support localproducts. Let’s stand up as a nationand rekindle the passion behind lo-cal being ‘lekker’.

“Last year, Proudly South Afri-can also made a call to the industryto create 93 000 jobs as part of the‘93 000 Jobs for Mandela Day’ cam-paign.

Jobs boost given a thumbs-up “Today’s news is a fitting tributeto the legacy of Madiba,” said Sed-ibe.

Although the number of jobs inSouth Africa is still 850 000 belowthe peak reached before the 2009 re-cession, Proudly South African re-mains hopeful that an increasingnumber of people and businesseswill buy home grown products andservices, to boost job creation andpromote national pride.

R52 000 stolen goods recovered, man arrestedSTOLEN goods worth a massive R52 000were recovered from various homes in theManenberg policing precinct recently, re-sulting in the arrest of a 21-year-old manfrom Surrey Estate.

This comes after the home of a DanubeStreet family was broken into on New Year’sDay while the family was on holiday.

Lieutenant Ian Bennett, spokesperson forManenbergpolice, says the familydiscoveredthat various household appliances, includinga plasma TV, had been stolen and they alertedthe police.

“Once the investigating official receivedthe case docket, he visited several known out-lets in the policing precinct and intervieweda number of people. Due to this police consta-ble’s persistence, the perpetrators were not

able to move the items,” he said.“His diligence led him to a house where the

plasma TV, which was sold for R800, was dis-covered. The buyer of the stolen items was al-so taken in for questioning and later re-leased.”

After following up more leads, a 21-year-oldwas arrested for housebreaking and theft. Heappeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Courtrecently and investigations continue.

The suspect was also linked to a house-breaking case in Manenberg.

. Twogunswere confiscated inManenbergduring search operations last Saturday.

At about 10:00, a Toyota bakkie was stoppedand searched at a vehicle checkpoint.

Bennett says the two occupants, aged 22and 27, claimed they were delivering bread, but officers found a .22 mm pistol with a filed-

off serial number concealed in a moonbag inthe cubbyhole.

Both driver and passenger were arrested.. A Manenberg police detective recovered

stolen property before a case had beenopened.

On Tuesday, Detective Constable Daryl vanNoi was following up a separate case, whena local told him about a known suspect tryingto sell what seemed to be stolen property.

At the same time he received a complaintabout a house robbery in Aries Road, SurreyEstate, and immediately followed up.

According to the complainant, the familywere asleep that morning when they werewoken by a noise in the main bedroom atabout 04:45. Says Bennett: “They found anarmed man in a bedroom. The intrudercocked the firearm and threatened to shoot

the husband, and demanded cellphones andwhatever else was in the house.”

He instructed the couple to face the walland not look at him. He then switched on thelight and the husband caught a glimpse of therobber, who then escaped through a window, taking a computer tower.

When Van Noi heard the story, he wentstraight to the home of the suspect.

“He confronted the suspect and found thecomputer tower on the bed, wrapped in linen.A cellphone was also retrieved. The officerssearched the suspect’s room and found a toypistol that was used in the crime,” Bennettsays. The 21-year-old was arrested.

THE 2012 season for theminstrel competitions haskicked off at the Vygiesk-raal and Athlone Stadi-ums, with several teamshoping to get their handson the coveted CarnivalTrophy.

Teams started their queston Monday 2 January with aroad march through DarlingStreet into Adderley Street,up Wale Street and then intohistoric Bo-Kaap.

People’s Post covered thestory of the minstrels’ bat-tling to re-enter Bo-Kaap, af-ter they were refused entrydue to complaints by localresidents about noise, min-strels urinating againstmosques and teams making anoise into the early hours ofthe morning.

This year’s road march drew thousands ofpeople to the CBD, where they lined thestreets to catch a glimpse of favourite teams. The day did not get off to a great start, asteams were meant to start walking at 10:00,but the first team only began making its wayup Wale Street just before 15:00. To thecrowd’s relief, a string of teams followed, en-tertaining the crowds with their bright col-ours, striking dance moves, fluent soundsand their joyous celebrations.

Kevin Momberg, executive director of theCape Town Carnival Minstrel Association, was delighted at the outcome of the TweedeNuwe Jaar celebrations, but emphasisedthat the action was only beginning at the sta-diums.

“We feel that the day was a success, despitea hiccup in the early stages of the event, butthe rest of the day was a complete success,”says Momberg.

Alderman Patricia De Lille, ExecutiveMayor, confirmed that around 40 000 troupemembers and 80 000 spectators particiaptedin the event.

She said the only complaint received bythe City concerned the late start on Monday2 January, but this was due to the late arriv-als of some of the minstrel troupes.

“As this was a pilot project, we have learntvaluable lessons which we will use to bolster, among other things, safety for future min-strel marches,” says De Lille.

Sax legend rememberedGARY VAN DYK

THE musical legacy of saxman Winston MankunkuNgozi comes to life on Sun-day 29 January.

Music lovers will ga-thern at West End in Colle-ge Road, Rylands, for Yah-kal’ Inkomo, a tribute to thepioneering saxophonistwho died in 2009.

While Yahkal’ Inkomo(the bellowing bull) refersto the 1968 recording by thesax man, recounting theslaughter of a cow. Theother cattle in the kraallook on and cry for theirkind. The bulls bellow inanguish and despair.

The bellow of anguishfrom Mankunku was inspi-red by his treatment du-ring the apartheid years, when he had to play behinda screen in the City Hall, while a white man billed asWinston Mann mimed the saxophone partson stage, because the white authoritiesfound it unacceptable that black musiciansshould be acknowledged as capable of play-ing such “sophisticated” music.

Metaphorically, they were slaughteringblack jazz musicians. Mankunku fell intodespair. When he eventually recovered hereleased the album which still remains amilestone in the history of South Africanmusic. The song became an anthem for jazz

musicians and jazz lo-vers.

Yakhal’ Inkomo hasbecome one of the big-gest selling jazz albumsof all time in South Afri-ca. It was recorded withthe Early Mabuza Triofeaturing Mabuza, thelegendary drummer, bassist Agrippa Magwa-za, and pianist LionelPillay. The recordinghas become one of theall-time classic SouthAfrican jazz albums, re-released in 1975, 1985and 1989, and since 1996available on CD.

At West End that lega-cy will be celebratedwhen sax men BarneyRachabane, Khaya Mah-lungu and Mark Frans-man illustrate just howfar we have come becau-se of that bellowing bull.

Each sax player willbe playing two songs of their choice and forthe finale all threewill join forces inamegacelebration of Mankunku’s legacy.

Former cleaner takes to the chalkboardTAMMY PETERSEN

AS the new arrivals at Mountview Highstreamed into the classroom lastWednesday, butterflies filled the stom-ach of Peter Hendricks.

He waited over 20 years to teach, and theday had finally arrived.

After years of using a broom and deter-gents, the 46-year-old father of two finallypicked up a stick of chalk and started histeaching career.

Hendricks, former head of cleaning atKenwyn Primary, completed his degree inteaching at UWC last year.

The road to realising his dream of mould-ing young minds was anything but easy, but after years of juggling his daytime joband studying after hours, he proved thatanything is possible if you put your mindto it.

“It was a great feeling to greet my firstclass,” a proud Hendricks, who is fromHanover Park, says. “I was no longer on theoutside looking in; I was finally what I al-ways wanted to be.”

Hendricks was retrenched in 2004 afterworking in the clothing industry for mostof his adult life, whereafter he volunteeredat Mountview High – his alma mater – whilehe struggled to find employment.

He always dreamed of teaching, but with-out a qualification, his chances of entering

the field were slim (“From swept floors tothe chalkboard”, People’s Post, 25 October

2011).Despite his age, he enrolled at UWC while

working as a cleaner at a primary school inStrandfontein, afterwhichhewasa caretak-er at a school in Ottery.

Money was tight, but his wife and twoteenaged children encouraged him to pushon towards a tertiary qualification.

Last year, in front of a crowd of spectatorswhich included his own family, Hendricksofficially graduated.

He applied for a post at Mountview Highand was officially accepted in January.

“When I got the job, I was told that thisschool had been waiting for me for a longtime. I immediately knew that I had madethe right decision to come here,” he says.

When People’s Post visited his classroomon Friday, he spoke calmly to the scholars, throwing in a joke or two to lighten themood.

“There is hard work ahead and I expectyou to do your best at all times,” he toldthem. “And don’t forget: we always handleeach other with the utmost respect.”

He has great plans for his lessons, whichhe hopes will be exciting and interesting forthe teenagers he will be educating.

“Besides their schoolwork, I hope I willteach and inspire them to exceed their ownexpectations and fulfil their goals as I did.Life is full of opportunities – you just needto go out there and grab them.”

He turns and starts chatting to the stu-dents – and grabs a broom and absentlysweeps a dusty area.

ACHMAT EBRAHIMCITY MANAGER

Power cuts maybe on the cardsESKOM has told the City of Cape Townthere is a possibility that Cape Town couldexperience load-shedding in the next fewweeks.

This is due to Eskom’s inability to meetrising demand for electricity throughoutthe country.

The risk of load-shedding has been exac-erbatedbyon-goingmaintenancework thatEskom has undertaken as it grapples withboosting supply capacity in order to avoidsustained power outages.

As the load-shedding in 2008 revealed, theprocess is a difficult one. However, as re-sponsible citizens, we can all do our bit toavoid the negative impact that load-shed-ding would have on our country by reduc-ing electricity usage.

Eskom urged Capetonians to use electric-ity sparingly in order to avoid power outag-es. It said switching off all unused electricalappliances or using alternative energywould help to conserve electricity.

Eskom said it was putting measures inplace to avoid load-shedding.

Marked for lifeSOUTH AFRICANS were elated to learnabout the improved matric pass rate, nation-ally and provincially, for the class of 2011.

The announcement was celebrated on theday of the big reveal earlier this month. Edu-cation authorities announced that nationallythe number of pupils who had passed theGrade 12 National Senior Certificate exami-nations had increased from 68 to 70 percent.

For the Western Cape the news was evensweeter, with the provincial pass rate in-creasing to 82,9 percent from 76,8 percent in2010. The cherry on top is that SA’s top ma-triculant hails from Rondebosch High School.

But how much does SA really have to cele-brate when considering the basic require-ments for promotion to the world of higherlearning?

Today, a high school student requires onlya 40 percent pass in a home language, 40 per-cent in two other subjects and a lowly 30 per-cent in three subjects to progress to the nextgrade or to matriculate.

To what extent does this meagre criteria fora pass rate ensure that students finish theirschool career with a quality qualification, armed with the confidence they need to flour-ish in the workplace?

This lax standard hardly equips them forsuccess in tertiary studies. In fact, it fails tomould confident professionals, skilled to copewith the demands of modern day industry, and places them at a disadvantage among col-leagues with better academic facilities thanthat typically available at state schools.

The message it conveys is that one no long-er needs to work hard or strive for excellencebecause the bare minimum is good enough topass. The responsibility to address this doesnot lie with teachers or parents, but the sameofficials celebrating victories of a seeminglyflawed system.

Stakes are always high when consideringnational education policy, and the foundationfor any long-term strategy must be in placeif you are to expect great rewards.

Remember there is only one GodMY CHURCH is better than yours!

My religion is better than yours! That is the perception that I do get

when the topic of religion comes up.Even if you go to each and every church

on earth to see which religion suits you, there remains only one God.

Therefore, we as humans should re-

spect each other’s religions and not bescared to go into any church.

We also need to fear God, only then canwe become morally and spiritually betterpeople.

Peace and good luck for the comingnew year.PATRICK ABRAHAMS

Qur’an condemns violenceI WISH to state uneqivocally that I as aMuslim, and the majority of Muslims, condemn the insane violence againstthe Christians in Nigeria by the sectBoko Haram.

The Qur’an, the Islamic Law Book, ex-plicitly condemns such acts against in-nocent people who do no harm to Mus-lims.

I quote just three verses out of scoresin the Qur’an.

Chap 4 verse 135: “O ye who believe!Standout firmly for justice, aswitnessesto Allah, even as against yourselves, oryour parents, or your kin, and whetherit be (against) rich or poor; for Allah canbest protect both.

Follow not the lusts (of your hearts),lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice)or decline to do justice, verily Allah iswell-acquainted with all that ye do.”

Chap 5 verse 8:“O ye who believe! Stand out firmly

for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to youmake you swerve to wrong and departfrom justice.

Be just: that is next to piety; and fearAllah.

For Allah is well-acquainted with allthat ye do.”

Chap 16 verse 90: “Allah commandsjustice, the doing of good, and liberalitykith and kin, and Allah forbids allshameful deeds, and injustice and rebel-lion:

He instructs you, that ye may receiveadmonition.”

Ignorance is the greatest danger asthat breeds violence.

Education brings about understand-ing and free choice.

There is much to write but because ofspace in your newspaper I have kept thisshort.

Chap 2 verse 256: “Let there be no com-pulsion in religion…..”

Chap 10 verses 99: “...wilt thou thencompel mankind, against their will, tobelieve?”

My family and I express our sincereand profound condolences to people andthe families that have suffered loss oflife and property.

May sanity prevail.Thank you,

A MOOSACrawford

We commend him for going the extra mileand believe that if the entire police force wereas dedicated and passionate about their workwe would be living in a crime-free country.

Also, a special thanks to Joy for her helpand input. We really appreciate it.

Detective Van Noie deserves recognitionand a medal for his outstanding work.

A very special thank you from the bottomof our hearts.

Novice cyclist begins epic 1 400km rideLIAM MOSES

Intense heat, uneven terrain and hours ofpunishing exercise – this is what SvenGreeff can expect over the next 12 days ashe cycles from Johannesburg to CapeTown.

Greeff, an amateur cyclist from Alberton, began the 1 400km trip yesterday morning ataround 06:00 and he expects to arrive at theV&AWaterfront inCapeTownon29January.He hopes to raise R1,2 million.

The 31-year-old father of two, who startedcycling less than a year ago, says that a seriesof significant events in his life inspired himto take the trip.

“In 2010 my best mate passed away and Iwent into a state of depression and I was inand out of hospital,” said Greeff.

“My wife then bought me a daily devotionalby Angus Buchan, which states that youshould ‘take on a challenge that frightens youand leave the rest to the lord’.

“The following Sunday we went to churchand heard that the church was battling toraise funds for the Jeremiah 29 CommunityCare foundation – which runs a children’ssafe house – so I decided to help out.”

Each day Greeff will cycle four to five hoursand travel approximately 130km on his bicy-

cle, before spending the night at a guest houseand starting again at 06:00 the next morning.

His route will see him follow the N1 out ofGauteng and into the Free State, and then onto the Northern Cape before crossing into the

Western Cape.Since he decided to do the trip, Greeff’s

training regime has included a daily 25kmbike ride and 100km trip every Saturday.

During the journey, Greeff will cover the

distance he usually covers in a week everytwo days. And anyone could be forgiven forthinking that he may be unprepared. Howev-er, Greeff is confident that his faith will carryhim through.

“The point is: whether I’m ready or not, I’mgoing to do it and the Lord is going to helpme. That’s what the point is. Taking a chal-lenge and doing it for the Lord,” said Greeff.

“My reason for doing this is to prove myfaith in myself and in the Lord. The fundrais-er just came afterwards.”

Greeff saidhe specifically choseCapeTownas the destination because he knew the tripwould be “gruelling”.

Luckily, hewill not be aloneonhis journey.A small convoy of about six people will joinhim. The convoy will include representativesof the companies that sponsor his bike andkit. And in each province he passes through,an official car will accompany him for the fulldurationofhis time inside theprovince’s bor-ders.

Greeff said the potential acknowledgementof his achievement was not a factor: “I don’twant recognition for this. I just want to raiseawareness.

“Although our plan is to raise R1,2 million,I’m not keen to know how much money I haveraised. I’m not doing this for the recognition;I’m doing it for the glory of the Lord.”

Grassboots achieves against all oddsLIAM MOSES

AT MOST football clubs teaching youngplayers skills on the field is the most im-portant objective, but at GrassbootsFootball Club, in Vredehoek, teachingplayers skills to use in everyday life ismore important.

The club was formed in 2009 after chair-man Stuart Diamond realised that therewere no soccer teams based in the CapeTown city centre. The side has since growninto an important support system for youngfootballers from all around Cape Town.

Many of the club’s players come from are-as such as The Kraal, Phillipi, Mitchell’sPlain and Khayelitsha, and it is policy thatno one is turned away, even if they cannotafford to pay membership or registrationfees or if they do not have boots to play in.

“I started this club to create a facility forkids in the City Bowl and to create a projectwhere social change and social progresscould be carried out,” said Diamond.

“I’m a believer that sport is a tool forchange. That is why the club supports chil-dren who would normally be turned away

because they won’t be able to pay fees. Theclub has a policy that those who can paytheir fees must pay and those who can’t orcan only pay a small amount will be sup-ported.”

The club provides players with every-thing they need to play the game, includingboots, playing kit, as well as mentorship, ad-vice and informal life-skills training.

According to Diamond, the club startedproviding some of the players with meals.

However, despite these obstacles the clubhas grown exponentially in three years ofexistance and has also racked up a few nota-ble achievements.

Grassboots had only eight players at theteam’s first training in 2009. It currently hasover 150 members.

Last year the club fielded teams in eightdifferent age-groups, ranging from U7 toU17. They will be represented by a seniorside for the first time this year.

According toDiamond, the club’sU15 sidewon the First Division league title, whilethe under U17 and U13 teams were both run-ners-up in their respective league and cupcompetitions.

But Diamond has stressed that winning

titles is not the objective of the team.“We are a community soccer team that

wants to create an environment where kidscan feel safe, where they can express them-selves on the field and fall in love with thegame again,” said Diamond.

“The key for me as chairman is that wehave happy kids and happy parents. If a kidcomes to a game and they don’t walk awaysmiling then we have failed. And if a kidfeels happy then you will start to see the re-sults on the field. We teach thekids thatwin-ning and losing isn’t the important thing, sportsmanship is”.

Diamond added that the team’s successcan be judged on the high level of participa-tion from members of the community.

The club has made several other impor-tant strides since being formed. Three of theteam’s coaches have completed South Afri-can Football Association courses and twoother have completed first aid courses.

GrassbootsFCwill behostinganopendayon Saturday 28 January and anyone inter-ested in joining the club has been invitedto attend.

For further information please contactStuart Diamond on 082 387 7315.
