Kromboom Park is starting to re- semble an “open-air camping site”, residents say, this after hundreds of thousands of rands were invest- ed into the public open space only three years ago. The facility was one of 23 areas which formed part of the Quality Public Spaces project completed in March 2010. The total budget for these up- grades was R2,5 million. But, locals say, the only ones making full use of the park are “outsiders”. Fagmieda Joseph says she has noticed about a dozen different people frequenting the park in the past week. “This group includes drunks, hobos, the unemployed and suspi- cious-looking people who could be thieves,” she says. Most of these loiterers seem to be harmless, but there “is the odd one who looks like he might be scouting the area”, Joseph adds. “This park was beautified so that ratepayers would have a quality fa- cility in which to enjoy nature. Clearly the new occupants have a different use in mind.” The once neat and attractive fa- cility is no longer safe, resident Rashad Abrahams says. “You can’t take a walk near the park in the evening. You don’t know if they might attack you,” he explains. “They also become violent with each other when they are drunk.” Besides the mess they leave be- hind, the new “neighbours” also cause a public disturbance. Another resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says fights usually erupt at night. “They wake up early and leave their blankets and cardboards un- der the trees. They return at night and make a lot of noise and some- times fight with each other,” she says. “I wouldn’t mind them sleeping there if they were not violent and kept the place clean.” Edson Longwe works as a clean- er at the park. He says when he ar- rives in the morning the vagrants are still asleep. “I come in on Thursdays and when I get here at 05:00 I find some of them sleeping near the toilet,” he says. “During the day they are not here. People looking for jobs come and sit here all day; some even take afternoon naps. I can’t tell how many vagrants sleep here because I see different faces.” Michael Komani, an unem- ployed father of three, says he has no choice but to sit at the park and wait for someone who might hire him. “I spend the whole day here and would sleep on the grass during the day. I need a job to feed my children and this spot is close to people who can hire me,” he says. Ward councillor Magadien Dav- ids is aware of the park’s occu- pants. “I have spoken to a couple of them and told them they should go to shelters to seek assistance but they refuse,” he says. Law Enforcement officials patrol the area regularly, Davids contin- ues. “The minute they see the offi- cials they run away but they come back as soon as the officers leave.” Another resident, who also asks not to be named, says she is wor- ried that the vagrants could get vio- lent with the residents. “There are mostly elderly people living here. They won’t be able to defend themselves if the vagrants attack,” she says. Facility no walk in the park NAP TIME: People waiting for a possi- ble job usually sleep at the park during the day. the transfer of units, the City will contrib-ute a transfer fee subsidy of R500.Qualifying tenants, with a monthly

household income of less than R3 500, arealso eligible for a discount of more thanR80 000, while those with a monthly house-hold income of between R3 500 and R7 500may receive a discount of R7 500.In addition, council will also write off all

residual service and rental arrears wherethe allocated subsidydoesnot cover the saleprice and arrears.Multi-storey flats are not for sale as it can

only be sold through sectional title. The City will host public engagement ses-

sions to share information on the offer.Details of the sessions have not yet been

finalised.TheCity is alsoupdating its housingdata-

are stored, council officials are requestingthat applicants go to their nearest HousingOffice to update their personal particulars.“It is imperative that theCityhasupdated

contact details for applicants so that theycan be contacted should a suitable dwellingbecome available,” says Tandeka Gqada, the Mayoral Committee member for Hu-man Settlements.City officials at the offices will assist ap-

plicants in updating their details, while ap-plicants need to indicate whether they stillqualify for a rental dwelling or a subsidisedhouse in a new housing project. The City’s housing allocation policy

states that all allocations will be done in or-der of the date of application in the targetarea, as well as to those applicants on thewaiting list the longest, outside the targetarea. For more information phone

AN INCIDENT which saw an elderly manbeaten up in his own home during a robberyhas spurred on Rylands residents to hire anindependent security company.Constable Zita Norman, Athlone police

spokesperson, says there has been an in-crease in property-related crimes.“We conduct regular patrols in all the are-

as we cover. The community needs to con-tact us if they see any suspicious behaviourin their areas,” she says.“They need to be our eyes and ears, so that

we can fight these crimes together.”The elderly man and his wife, who wish

to remain anonymous, are still fearing fortheir lives after they were recently wokenup by their assailants.

The couple spoke to People’s Post aboutthe incident that happened twoweeks ago oncondition of anonymity. The visibly shaken man says the incident

took place in the early hours of themorning.“It was after 01:00 when five guyswokeme

up, held a gun to my head and told me notto scream,” says the 80-year-old man.The men beat him until his ears and eyes

were bleeding and then proceeded to tie himup in his room, he continues.“They went to the other rooms where my

wife and daughter were sleeping. They alsotied both of them. They searched the entirehouse and kept on asking where the moneyis,” he says. The man says the men entered the house

through a window.“They managed to open the window andbent the burglar bar. They took cashand jewellery, including my wife’s goldchain that shehad for 45years,”he says.“Even though I still have to go to doc-

tors for all my injuries, I’m thankfulthat we are still alive.”Faizel Firfirey, a neighbour of the

couple, says the men jumped over hiswall to get inside his neighbour’spremises.“I have cameras installed atmy home

and when I heard what happened to myneighbour I checked the footage to seeif I could see who the people were,” hesays.“On the footage I saw two cars roam-

ing in the street andminutes later I sawfive guys jumping over my wall to getinside my neighbour’s yard.”Firfirey say he immediately alerted

the police and also notified other neigh-bours of what happened.“I started to mobilise the neighbours

and organised a meeting with the resi-

dents, police and ward councillor. At themeeting we discussed how we can preventsuch incidents from happening again. Weneeded to stand together,” he says.“We decided that we will hire a security

company that will patrol the area. Each resi-dent contributes R250 amonth. The securitycompany from Lansdowne patrols the area24 hours a day. We have three guys patrol-ling a street,” he says.Three streets are currently being pa-

trolled: Mabel Road, Plettenberg Road andDoringweg.“Residents from other streets are keen to

join in and have security personnel patrol-ling their streets,” Firfirey says.Latiefa Omar, the chairperson of the

Thornhill Residents’ Association, says theburglaries started last year.“There seems to be a pattern because they

break in and demand cash and jewellery. They don’t take anything else,” she says.“The security company has made a differ-

ence because ever since they started work-ing in the areawehave not heard of any inci-dents. I have also seen a decrease in peopleloitering in the streets.”Cassiem Christians, the chairperson for

the Athlone CPF, says Rylands is not the on-

ly area affected.“Places such as Bridgetown, Silvertown

and Belgravia have also been faced withthese burglaries. It looks like theyare target-ing the elderly because they know they arethe most vulnerable,” he says.“Weneed tohave strong street committees

so that we can look out for each other andtry to avoid these things from happening.”

THE Dial-a-Ride Service is oversubscribed, leaving disabled passengers stranded. The public transport service for people

with disabilities has come under the spot-light for refusing to transport unregisteredpassengers to a special event. However, Brett Herron, the Mayoral

Committee Member for Transport, Roadsand Stormwater, says unregistered passen-gers are not allowed to use the service.A group of people were left stranded and

subsequently did not attend a wheelchairrace recently held in Somerset West.Anthony George, who is in a wheelchair,

says previously arrangements could bemadewith the service provider to transportnon-registered commuters. “This is nolonger allowedwith the new service provid-er, not even for special events,” he says.Herron responds: “It is a condition of car-

riageway that users should be registered onthe City’s Dial-a-Ride database before theycan be transported on the Dial-a-Ride serv-ice.”Natalie Snyders, one of the participants

of the race, says she was left stranded. Sheis not a registered user. “I could not partici-pate in the race because I was not allowedto use the Dial-a-Ride service,” she says. However, she has been trying to register

for two years. “I have submitted four appli-cations in the last two years,” she says.TheCity appointed anewservice provid-

er, Fox Transport, in June last year.

The 33-year-old woman says while shewould like to gain a newfound independ-ence, the process has been hampered by theCity of Cape Town and the Dial-a-Ride serv-ice provider’s failure to processher applica-tion.However, City officials say Snyders is not

on any of their database lists. “I have beeninawheelchair ever since the (car) accidentwhich happenedwhen Iwas inmatric,” shesays. Snyders says she went back to schoolin 2010 and 2011 to complete her matric.“I wanted to study Human Resources last

year, but without transport this is a majorchallenge,” she says. “I need to know thatmy transport is reliable before I commit tostudying. One of the requirements whenapplying for a job is having one’s owntransport. However, I am unemployed anddo not have money to buy myself a car.”Herron says there are currently more

than 6000 registered uses. The service canonly accommodate 1300. extending the serv-ice is a challenge because of budget con-straints. “It is for this reason that we arein the process of establishing a Users’ Fo-rum where we can engage with our com-muters and together find a way to increaseaccess to independent mobility for disabledresidents,” he says.

CHAOS erupted when a protest by Collegeof Cape Town students turned violent onThursday.Classes at the Crawford campus were can-

celled after students protesting bursary allo-cations assaulted lecturers and damagedproperty.Student Inshaaf Adams blames students

from other campuses.“We were having normal classes until the

protesting students caused chaos by throw-ing bricks and breakingwindows,” she says.“This should be resolved quickly because

we were suppose to have written exams yes-terday and we could not.”Jannie Isaacs, College of Cape Town CEO,

says tension between management and stu-

dents have been mounting for three weeks.“Despite continuing engagement with the

South African Students Congress (SASCO)and protesting students, student organisa-tion members have continued with protestsleading to the disruption of classes and dam-age to property on various campuses.” hesays.“The College has exhausted all reasonable

avenues to negotiate with SASCO and pro-testing students to bring an end to the actionand for stability to be returned. All of theseattempts were unfortunately unsuccessful.“On Thursday, the college was granted an

interdict against registered protesting stu-dents of the college. This order has beenserved to SASCO, the provincial minister ofSafety and Security, police stations includ-ingAthlone, Pinelands,Wynberg, Salt River

and Cape Town and the SRC.”Zita Norman, Athlone police spokesper-

son, says a case of public violence is open.SharonGrobbelaar, the corporate commu-

nications and marketing manager for thecollege, says the institution has limitedfunding for bursaries.“Bursary allocations are based on the ap-

plicantsmeetingall the relevant criteria andagainst the individual circumstances ofeach applicant,” she says. “The available re-sources are only sufficient to cover the de-mand for tuition fees through limited bursa-ries to qualifying applicants who meet theminimum requirements of the FinancialMeans Test tool, as defined by the NationalStudent FinancialAid Scheme of SouthAfri-ca (NSFAS).”A student, who wishes to remain anony-

mous, accuses college management of lies.“The management is playing hide and

seek with us and not giving us clarity. Offi-cials from NSFAS say the cash was given tothe institution and they need to distributethe funds to us,” she says.“We will continue to protest until we get

answers to our demands.”

CCHILDREN with infectiousand chronic illnesses willbenefit from the multi-mil-

lion upgraded Ward B2 at RedCross War Memorial Children’sHospital.Ward B2, which has capacity

to admit 29 children, was offi-cially opened by provincial min-ister of health, TheunsBotha, onThursday. The R10.5m upgrade is the

first major upgrade for the wardsince being built in 1956. It hasonly received minor upgradesuntil now. This ward admits children

with a wide range of medicalconditions including, infectiousand chronic illnesses like TBand HIV and treats about 1 100patients a year. The number of ward admis-

sions and turnover of patientshas, however, significantly in-creased compared to 1956.Overcrowding and hospital-

acquired infections became a se-rious concern as the ward’s in-frastructure struggled to keep

upwith the increasing number ofadmissions.Despite these challenges, the

ward and its dedicated staff con-tinued to provide the best possi-ble care to patients and their fam-ilies.Furthermore, B2 remains an

important area for clinical re-search and training of medicalprofessionals. The ward’s operational manag-

er, Lindiwe Teto, says she is look-ing forward to the ward’s six newisolation cubicles, which have in-creased from two.“It was very challenging, be-

fore the ward was upgraded, tofind adequate isolation for infec-tious patients,” says Teto.“For example a seriously ill TB

patient would sometimes be ad-mitted to an isolation cubicle formore than amonth and we wouldbe unable to admit other childreninto isolation because there wasnot enough space.”The ward now provides relaxa-

tion and rest space for staff, pa-tients and families that’s child

friendly and attractive. Passagesare now more spacious, ablutionfacilities are also upgraded andthere are dedicated office spacesand a kitchen facility.Dr Marco Zampoli, a consultant

at the ward, says the upgrade is awelcome relief to staff and pa-tients. “Children and their parentsdeserve a modern, spacious andclean environment to recuperate.Likewise, morale amongst staffwill be lifted, which will no doubtresult in improved patient care,”he says.Hospital CEO Dr Lungi Linda

says the facility is always strivingto prevent cross-infections amongpatients and adds the upgrade ofWard B2 will go a long way to im-proving the health of patients. The upgrade of the ward was

made possible by the 18-year-oldpublic-private partnership be-tween provincial government andthe Children’s Hospital Trust.Louise Driver, the CEO of the

Trust, says they are extremelygrateful to all the donors. “Thoughthis is the lastward to be upgraded,

our work in improving the servicesis far from over,” she says.“This ward will continue to pro-

vide the best medical care to treat

the sickest andyoungest patients inthe hospital andwewill continue toraise funds for the hospital’s priori-ty needs.”

A BILL aimed at creating a relationship be-tween police, provincial oversight responsi-bilities and communities across the prov-ince has been passed by the Western CapeProvincial Government’s Standing Commit-tee for Community Safety.

This comes after a month of public partici-pation and input from experts.

The Western Cape Community Safety Billmakes provision for an ombudsman, whowill hear complaints about police service de-livery and who will report to the provincialparliament.

The roles and functions of community po-lice forums (CPFs) and neighbourhoodwatches is also stipulated in the bill. It alsomakes provision for the training and re-

sourcing of these entities.“To date there is no legislation to give this

vital aspect in the fight against crime anydirection”, said Standing Committee forCommunity Safety chairperson, Mark Wi-ley.

“At a time when public opinion regardingpolicing is at an all-time low, it is vital thatevery effort is made to re-establish policingstandards and confidence in our law enforc-ers.

“This can only be achieved by the publicbeing part of the solution and by holdingboth political heads and senior police offi-cials to account.”

The bill will now be sent to provincial par-liament for debate and final approval.

BULELWA Mayikwaa had no education,a hearing problem, and was abandoned byher husband several years ago.Undaunted, she started a business to pay

for her daughter’s education.Today, Mayikwaa owns and runs Them-

balethu’s Building Blocks in SamoraMachel, which is the leading building sup-plier in the community and employs localpeople.

Mayikwaa is just one of hundreds of wom-en whose lives have been uplifted with agrant provided by Women’s Hope, Educa-tion and Training (Wheat).

Wheat was started 14 years ago by a groupof inspirational women who decided toraise and provide financial aid to assist thegrowth of grassroots organisations andovercome the gender stigma. They aimed toempower and involve marginalised womento run small, sustainable businesses andcommunity services in rural and townshipareas.

Wheat director Soraya Matthews’ ownlife story is equally inspiring. She was theyoungest child of unemployed parents inBishop Lavis.

“At 14, I made the conscious decision notto become a statistic by falling prey todrugs, alcohol or an early pregnancy,” shesays.

She joined the Resource Action Group(RAG)whichopened thedoor to abetter life.Matthews wanted to be a journalist andworkedas avolunteer inmedia andcommu-nications with RAG for nine years beforeshe was offered a bursary to study journal-ism at the Cape Peninsula University ofTechnology.

When she was 20, she represented SouthAfrica at the first International Youth Par-liament in Sydney, Australia. Matthews al-so initiated International Youth Voices – aproject between South Africa and the UK.

She was recently selected by the Ameri-can government to participate in a leader-ship exchange programme, and is currentlyenjoying a three-week tour of women’sgroups and stakeholders based in NewYork, New Mexico and Washington.

Her work at Wheat involves sourcing andproviding grants to small women’s groups.

In 14 years,Wheat hashelp 850 grassrootsorganisations countrywide – led by women.

“Many women are unable to read or writeand can’t fill in forms, so they can’t accessfunding and aren’t registered with SocialWelfare. We provide them with a smallgrant of R5 000,” Matthews says.

“We don’t encourage handouts. The or-ganisations must be active. We conduct sitevisits and ask them to define their needs.”

EDUCATION is key.Annually, 2 000 pupils in the Western Cape fall preg-

nant. Only a thirdwill return to school to finish their edu-cation. This was revealed by the provincial education de-partment.Frightening and utterly dismaying. It’s clear the safe sexmessage is getting lost somewhere

along the line.Apart from unplanned pregnancy, unsafe sex also car-

ries the risk ofHIV/Aids and other communicable diseas-es.Butmarkwell thesewords – it’s futile to cast aspersions

on pupils, as uppity, more well-to-do folk are apt to do.The goal is to keep these children, for that they still are,

in school. There is now a little one to care for and what chances

do young mothers have when their schooling is incom-plete?Slim.The provincial education department has developed a

policy to provide step-by-step guidelines on how princi-pals and governing bodies should support pregnant pu-pils to ensure they stay in school. The CapeWinelands is one of themost heavily affected. They are to be given access to counselling by social

workers and psychologists based at district offices. These pupils may also call the Safe Schools call centre

on 0800 45 46 47.The policy also provides, in detail, guidelines on how

to manage exams for pregnant pupils, especially foryoung mothers in Grade 12.The department’s efforts to help our youth is laudable,

but the girl’s family – if she has any – also needs to stepup. In 2010, 2 108 pupils in theWesternCapehad fallen preg-

nant. In 2011, that figure was 2 097.Teen pregnancy is a fixable problem and has workable

solutions.So, let’s end the sneering – there’s a little one waiting

to be born.

Give credit where it is dueALLOW me to use this opportunity to callupon the Department of Trade and Industryand the relevant parliamentary oversightcommittees to urgently look into the black-listing of consumers who default on theircredit agreements.Daily I hear people complaining about

their inability to find jobs due to their nega-tive listingsat a credit bureau.Manyof thesepeople complain that their debts have beenfully paid up and yet it reflects on theirnames at credit listing agencies. This is un-fair and, I suspect, unconstitutional to pun-ish the people twice for the same mistakes. In a country faced with massive unem-

ployment it is stupid to allow adverse infor-mation to be posted against those who havesettled their debts in full. Why not clear thenames of those who have paid up their debtsimmediately and allow them to access thecredit and job markets? We grant all forms of amnesties to those

who commit serious criminal offences.How-ever, those who are unable to honour theircredit arrangements are faced with seriousconsequences due to their economic circum-stances.They don’t want hand-outs, they want a

second chance. Many of them have paid

their debts.Theyneed tobeallowed toaccesscredit at retailers and be allowed to contrib-ute towards the economy of this country. Those blacklisted for failing to pay their

debts on time have to wait two years andlonger to access the credit and job markets.Grant some form of relief to our indebted

citizens who are imprisoned by their eco-nomic circumstances. Poverty is their onlycrime.(The government) wrote the National

Credit Act (NCA) and you have the powersto amend it.We cannot allow our parliamentto give greater consideration to the rights ofbig business and some credit agencies andignore the rights of the majority of our peo-ple.I urge eachmember of the relevant portfo-

lio committee in parliament to use this letterand bring some relief to our struggling andpoor citizens. More than two million SouthAfricans would immediately have access tocredit and thousands of thesewould have ac-cess to jobs once parliament intervenes andprovide some form of amnesty to overly-in-debted South Africans. I am convinced theirappreciation would be shown at the votingbooths next year!Rozario Brown

Pledge to love and respect womenAN ANTI-RAPE and murder pledge bySouthAfrican pupils is not the only solutionto solve the situation of gender-based vio-lence in South Africa – if it is left solely tobe championed by government or initiativessuch as LeadSA.I believe faith-based organisations must

preach the anti-crime message to its follow-ers.Doctrinal faiths all expound and implore:

“Thou shall notmurder, steal, falsely accuseor desire someone else’s possessions”.We, the church, must be the moral con-

science of society, lead by example and liveout our faiths.Every community is plagued by crime and

icons such as Nelson Mandela, MahatmaGhandi, Martin Luther King Junior andMother Teresa used peace as the commonfactor to bring about the necessary change.Effective and harmonious communica-

tion by all roleplayers is a vital componentof peaceful change, and our mindsets mustchange in combating the pandemic of crimein our beloved country.During our Sunday service, all the men

and boys in our congregation took a corpo-rate pledge, signed it and had the womenwitness this public declaration to stop rape, murder and all forms of abuse against wom-en and girls. The pledge stipulated that women and

girls were to be loved, respected and defend-ed with dignity, honour and grace. We pray fervently that this humble act

will sow the seeds towards the redemptionof the evil thatmen inourvarious communi-ties commit. Our united prayer is: “God, bless Africa,

guard her children, guide her leaders, andgrant her peace”.Mark Kleinschmidt

Abortion is apersonal choiceI STRONGLY believe religion and politicsshould never mix.Unbelievably, not every individual should

have their personal beliefs and decisions im-pacted by your ingrained beliefs, which isbased on a book written by a person, not onsubstantial fact.Abortion, whether legal or not, will al-

ways happen – whether it is performed in asafe, sterile environmentbyaqualifiedprac-titioner or done haphazardly with an infect-ed coat hanger, because there will always bea legitimate reason for them. You may not understand the reasons, but

you don’t have to.It’s not your business.I’m sure you’ll find that most women who

decide to have an abortion have discussedit with their significant others and, if theyhaven’t, it would be because themen respon-sible would make unfit fathers or (are) un-supportive.Either way, it is up to the individual wom-

an to decide how honest she wants to be.On the subject of family andmarriage, it’s

absolutely wonderful that traditional mar-riage and family units work for you. However, you are not entitled to force that

definition of family on the rest of the popula-tion.Neither am I.People can live with whomever they like,

however they like.Again, it is up to the people involved, not

you or your god(s).Finally, to refer to atheists and other non-

fundamentalists as “morally unclean”, sim-ply because we find no valid reason to shareyour beliefs, is incredibly narrow-mindedand downright rude. For the record, I was raised in a non-reli-

gious home, where logic and science waspreferred.I have never been a promiscuous teenager

and I am not an evil or mean person.I also don’t think I would get an abor-

tion should I ever end up unexpectedly preg-nant.However, I will not ever take away some-

one else’s choice to get one.Personal freedom and choice is a constitu-

tional right.Anonymous

LAILA MAJIET

IN ORDER to meet the demand for bloodin the country, the South African NationalBlood Service must collect 3 000 units ofblood a day.

An average of 700 units of blood is neededevery 24 hours to meet the demand forblood in this province alone.

However, while one unit of blood cansave up to three lives, less than 1% of eligi-ble South Africans are regular blood do-nors.

People are being encouraged to donateblood and help save a life.

The Western Province Blood Transfu-sion Service’s Marlize Mouton says thateven in 2013, with all the technology availa-ble to us, blood cannot be artificially manu-factured.

“Therefore we rely on the support of ourvoluntary blood donors,” she explains.

Although 75% of the Western Cape popu-lation will need a blood transfusion duringtheir lifetime, a mere 1.5% donate blood,Mouton says.

The blood donor agency has basic donorcriteria. You must be between 16 and 65years old, weigh more than 50kgs, be ingood health, live a safe sexual lifestyle andbe committed to helping save lives.

Donating blood has its benefits, Moutonsays. “Every time you donate blood, you re-ceive a ‘mini-medical’. Your iron, pulse, blood pressure and general health ischecked before you donate blood.”

However, she says more importantly isthe benefit of knowing you have had an im-pact on saving someone’s life.

Donating blood is a simple.“It is of utmost importance that you eat

a substantial meal three to four hours be-fore donating blood. Drink lots of water orjuice on the day of donation and take iteasy with exercise for that day,” Moutonadvises.

She says blood donated is rarely used inits donated state. “It is only used in its orig-inal state in cases of replacing massiveblood loss in trauma emergencies. Mostlyblood is divided into blood products, in-cluding red cells, plasma and platelets.”

Red cells are used in the treatment ofanaemia and bleeding after trauma sur-gery.

Plasma is used to treat burn wounds, bleed-ing disorders, to restore blood volume and toprovide antibodies.

Platelets are used to treat leukaemia, inbone marrow transplants and low plateletcount.

To become a donor, visit www.wp-blood.org.za, or a mobile clinic.

The service has mobile units visiting vari-ous venues throughout the province each dayof the week. “Our clinic teams visit variouslibraries, community centres, churches, edu-cational institutions, businesses, factoriesand shopping malls,” Mouton says.

The clinic schedule can be viewed on

www.wpblood.org.za.The service also has two fixed sites.People may visit 22 Long Street from Mon-

day to Friday between 8:30 and 15:45. Alter-natively, visit the N1 City Mall in Goodwoodto donate.

The donor clinic at the mall is open allweek.

They operate from 10:00 until 17:45 duringthe week, from 9:00 until 14:45 on a Saturdayand from 9:00 until 11:45 on Sundays andpublic holidays.

For further details call 0 (021) 507 6300,SMS “Blood” to 33507 or email 2 [email protected].

WP Softball to review tournament participationLIAM MOSES

THE Western Province Softball Federation(WPSF) general council will meet today toreview its decision to not participate in theannual Softball South Africa (SSA) NationalProvincial Championship (NPC).TheWPSF general council, which is made

up of the chairpersons of affiliated clubs, elected not to take part in the tournamentat a meeting in February (“WP Softball stillout of tourney, says letter”, People’s Post, 5March).However, the Federation could now over-

turn this decision after complaints from dis-appointed players at a feedback meeting onTuesday 5 February.According to Noore Nacerodien, former

chairperson and CEO of WPSF and formerfirst vice-president of SSA, the initial deci-sion in February was taken without the cor-rect information being given to the clubs.“Their decision was based on what they

(the chairpersons) were told. From the front– theway I heard it – theNPC is not approvedand they have a problem with the interimcommittee,” he says.“However, there are no problems. The

NPC is valid andapprovedby theSouthAfri-can Sport Council and Olympic Committee(Sascoc) and the interimcommitteehasbeensupported by Sascoc.Wehave no right to saythat the players can’t play.”Nacerodien, who is also an international

referee, was present at the meeting alongwith about 40 officials and players.Nazeem Dulvie, chairperson of Westridge

YankeesBaseball andSoftballClub, wasalsopresent at both meetings. He echoed Nacerodien’s claims, saying

clubswere toldby theWPSFexecutiveboardthat the NPC was “not sanctioned”.“At the chairpersonsmeeting in February

some information was mis-communicated.The understanding was that the NPCwasn’tsanctioned and that was when the decision

was made,” says Dulvie.“But when we got to the meeting on Tues-

day 5 March we were told that it is a sanc-tioned tournament. I don’t know if it wasmis-communicated or if the informationwasn’t available to them.”In the People’s Post article published on

the same day as the feedbackmeeting, SSA’sinterim chairman Basil Peters confirmedthe sport was carrying on as normal despitethe fact SSA were placed under administra-tion by Sascoc.“Sascoc has given us a directive that the

sport must carry on as it is. There’s nobodybesides the interim committee running thesport,” he said. Both Nacerodien and Dulvie say players

areupset atmissingout on representingWP,missing out on potential national selection– which takes place at the NPC – and at notbeing consulted on the decision. The NPC will be hosted in Kempton Park

from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 March.

Should the decision to not participate beoverturned, the WP will have less than ninedays to select and prepare a team.“To get ourselves ready to go to Kempton

Park is virtually impossible. There is goingto a very rich, chequebook team,” Nacerodi-en says.“It’s going go to be those who can gather

that sort of money in the space of a week.”He adds the tournament could cost the

players around R6 000 per person.Dulvie shares the same concerns but says

he will still be voting to attend the tourna-ment, as this is what Yankees players havedecided. He says 66% of the clubs will need to over-

turn their Tuesday 5 February decisions forWP to participate in the NPC.People’s Post attempted to contact Denise

Paulsen, chairperson ofWPSF, for commentbut could not reach her by the time of goingto print.

GLENTHORNEATHLETICSproduced a stunning fight-back to rout Westridge Yan-kees in theWestern ProvinceSoftball Federation women’sSuper LeagueKnockout finalon Sunday. The match was a repeat oflast year’s final and pitted to-gether two teams who arecurrently neck-and-neck inthe league title race.Yankees went into thematch desperate to avengelast year’s defeat and get oneover their Super League ri-vals a week before the finalround of fixtures in the tour-nament.However, their opponentswere not reading from thesame script and managed tocome back from 0-4 down towin the game 11-4.Wayne May, A’s headcoach, praised his side for re-fusing to give up and work-ing together to claim victory.“I think the girls workedreally hard today, especiallycoming back from 0-4 down. They showed good character;they have been doing that allseason,” he says.“The spirit in this team isawesome and they don’tknowwhen they are done. At0-4 down other people droptheir heads, but this teamkept going and grinding outthe hits, and the result is thatwe ended up winning thegame.”Yankees were the first tosettle into a rhythm and

looked on track to reclaimthe Knockout title, leading4-0 after the first two innings. However, that was wherethe scoring ended for Yan-kees. Glenthorne cut downon the fielding errors thatsaw them concede the fourruns, started to feed off mis-takes made by their oppo-nents and clawed their wayback to a 5-4 lead after a sin-gle run in the third inningsand four in the fourth.A’s brought the game to aclose early when they scoredsix runs in the fifth innings– four of which came off theback of two home runs – tobring their lead to sevenruns.May was not surprised byhis team’s sluggish start inthe encounter. “I think if youlook at the runs that theyscored, it was basically downto our errors,” he says.“I put it down tonerves.Weare generally slow starters. We get stronger as the gamegoes on. They didn’t get anyhits, which shows that it wasdown to our mistakes. Westepped up and you see theend result.”The sides will face-offagain this weekend in the fi-nal round of fixtures in theSuper League. Glenthornecurrently lead the log, butcould be overtaken by Yan-kees if they lose.May added his side wouldforget about the league andsavour the Knockout victoryuntil they resume trainingon Tuesday.

Mondale aims to hold on to cupTHE head coach of Mondale High School’sfootball team has warned his playersagainst over-confidence as they prepare todefend their Ryan RasoolMemorial Cup ti-tle.Mondale won both the Ryan Rasool Me-morial Cup and the Mr Price League lastyear, and will aim to repeat their doublein 2013.Team coach Nigel Crowie is confident inhis squad’s capabilities to lift the title forthe second consecutive year.“It’s going to be quite difficult. Normallyit’s easy to win a title, but to retain is a lotharder. We definitely will go out there toretain it,” he says.“We have a strong team with a numberof the boys left from last year. But, theyhave to produce on the field and not thinkthat it’s going to be a walk in the park be-cause they won last year.”Mondale scored 43 goals and concededonly six in their 15 Mr Price League gameslast season. Crowie says the same rear-guard will do duty again this season andlisted the continuity in defence as theteam’s biggest advantage.

“We have quite a strong defence. I be-lieve if you don’t concede goals, you can’tlose games. That is our strong point. Ourdefence is the same as last year.”Crowie’s side finished six points aboverunners-up Oval North High in the league, after winning 14 and losing one of their 15fixtures.That solitary blot on Mondale’s 2012record came at the hands of RocklandsHigh, who Mondale will face in Group Eof the tournament along with HaroldCressy High and Zola High.Crowie believes Rocklands will be theirstrongest opponents despite finishingninth in the league last year.“I think the major competition will befrom the team’s playing in the league. Those are the teams that will also push forthe title,” says Crowie.“Zola High and Matthew Goniwe Highare usually strong teams, while Rocklandswere the only team that took points off uslast year. Rocklandsmust not beunderesti-mated. They were a young team, so theywill also have the same team as last year.”Crowie’s sidewill start their preparation

for the tournament in a friendly today(Tuesday 12 March). The match will be an opportunity fornewplayers to stake their claim for a place, before the tournament kicks off on Satur-

day 16 March. The tournament will see schools fromacross the Peninsula participate.Matches will kick-off at Westridge HighSchool in Mitchell’s Plain at 09:00.

REPEAT PERFORMANCE: Mondale High School show off the Ryan Rasool Memorial Cup afterwinning the tournament in 2012. The side aims to lift the trophy again. PHOTO: RASHIED ISAACS
