RAPE survivors may soon face furtherdejection as a leading rape counsellingcentre trims down on staff.
Several staff members from the Rape Cri-sis Cape Town Trust will be unemployed bythe end of this month.
They have however pledged to continuewith their services as volunteers, for as longas possible.
The retrenchment of 12 staff members atthe organisation’s three counselling centresis the result of a number of factors, KathleenDey, the director of Rape Crisis, explains.
“Over the last two years we have been ex-periencing difficulty with fundraising,” shesays.
“The government has decreased our fund-ing by more than a third and the global eco-nomic recession has made other avenueshard to follow.”
The centres, situated in Athlone, Khayelit-sha and Observatory, will see the staff volun-teering to “different degrees” – depending ontheir situation.
“Some will be volunteering part-time andothers full-time. We will continue in thismanner hoping that the organisation willstabilise.”
Rape Crisis will also be downsizing theiroperation costs by 70%.
Two of their three 24-hour crisis lines willbe closed and instead one centralised linewill be used.
Some of the 24-hour services will also bereduced to 12-hours.
Nazma Hendricks, the operations manag-er of Rape Crisis, is one of the staff memberswho is being retrenched.
She says for the public to lose this kind ofservice is going to take everything “a fewsteps back”. “Our aim is to improve servicesfor rape survivors. We empower them by en-suring that someone is with them every stepof the way– whether it be in court or at a med-
ical facility,” says Hendricks.“I worry that a restriction in our services
will result in less rape survivors coming for-ward and speaking out.”
Based at the Grassroots Educare Centre inKlipfontein Road, Hendricks says the officeis one of the busiest because of its location.
“On average we receive 15 new patientsmonthly and have about 50 counselling ses-sions with older patients,” she says.
Despite the organisation’s dismal forecast,Hendricks says the dedication of staff andvolunteers is commendable.
“These are people who have a passion tohelp others and it is this passion whichdrives them to continue without payment,”she says.
A rape survivor, who wishes to remainanonymous, says it would be a “great loss”if Rape Crisis ever had to close down.
“Words cannot express how much I havebeen helped by this place. It was my safe ha-ven for more than five years and I don’t knowwhat I would have done without it,” she says.
Referred to the centre by her doctor, shesays when she first arrived she was made tofeel safe and comfortable by the staff.
“I became an introvert after my incidentbut through one-on-one counselling I felt safeenough to speak about what happened to me.I eventually joined the group counselling ses-sions and it was wonderful. I realised I wasnot alone,” she says.
Considering the cost of counselling, shesays she cannot begin to imagine how muchall her sessions cost.
“I would never have been able to afford itif I hadn't received it at the centre. I was veryfortunate to get it for free. It changed my out-look on life and today I am a better personbecause of it.
“I don’t think people understand howmany distressed women are in need of thisplace. I know because I was one of them.”
Donors wishing to make enquiries aboutthe organisation and its projects can contactDey at [email protected].

Dear reader,
Seeing Team South Africa during the open-ing ceremony of the London Olympic Gamesfilled me with immense pride and anticipa-tion. Cameron van der Burgh winning ourfirst gold medal and smashing the worldrecord of the world 100m breaststrokewas thecherry on the cake.
LikemostSouthAfricans, andespecially Capetonians, I natu-rally back a winner.
People’s behaviour and re-sponses to sport reveals a lotabout themselves. We remainglued to our TV screens whenour side is winning, but heavenforbid when the opposite ap-plies. We leave the stadium ear-ly, change the TV channel whenour side is losing or take teabreaks to avoid witnessing ourteam’s agonisingdefeat.Weyell,or throw the remote on the floor. Some extremists drown theirsorrows with booze (not I) andsome let rip with the most colourful CapeFlats vernacular (not I).
Van der Burgh’s our golden man right nowand we’re high on his victory, just two daysinto the Olympics. His win made up for thebitter disappointment at our hockey, volley-ball, rowing, soccer and other defeats so far.
But it’s still early days for our Olympichopefuls.
Not so for Stormers, for whom the finalwhistle has blown.
Sadly, their die-hard supporters gave upand stopped cheering with the same fervourdisplayed at the start of the gamewhenStorm-ers began trailing in the Super Rugby semi-fi-nal at Newlands on Saturday.
This was when the Stormers needed their
supporters most.We can learn a lot from fighting ’til the bit-
ter end – the Manchester United-Ajax game isa case in point.
TheRedDevils didnot accept defeat, despitebeing 1-0 behind. They gave their all until thedying minute of extra time, when they scoredthe equalising goal.
On the topic of backing winners, duringmyrecent vacation, a female friendand I went to Club Mykonos fora girls’ getaway. We wanted toescape our stressors, men andchildren and ended up talkingabout our stressors, men andchildren.
At one point, we made a pactto cease discussing our men,but that was shortlived.
We concluded that men areuseful for killing spiders, changing light bulbs, driving, carrying the groceries from theboot to the house, looking afterthe kids, ensuring our safetyand braaing.
We did enjoy some male company at the re-sort; in the form of “Tom”, the resident black-and-white kitty whomwe fed top quality tunaand sardines. In return, Tom rewarded uswith loyalty and love.
By the time we left, I had learnt a lot aboutmyelf. I can be annoying, losing myself com-pletely in a book and whipping out my laptopeven while on holiday for work.
We contented ourselves with eating out of-ten and ended up disillusioned with most ofthe food. Despite all that, we had a great time.
’Til next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by Peo-
ple’s Post editor Feroza Miller-Isaacs whocan be contacted on [email protected] www.peoplespost.co.za.

THE Kewtown community is bracing it-self for war after yet another life isclaimed by the deadly grip of gangster-ism.
Tension filled the streets as people went intheir droves to the kifayat (Muslim funeral)of Munier Cox last Tuesday.Cox (20), a member of the Americans, died
after being shot in the back of the head lastMonday. He was playing soccer on a pitch between
BlockOneandBlockTwo inDrAbdurahmanAvenuewhen hewas gunned down by an un-known man.Twomen, aged 16 and 20, were arrested for
themurder on the same day and are current-ly in police custody. The murder is believed to be related to the
gang rivalry between the Americans and theSexy Boys. The following day dozens of pairs of eyes
were fixed on the Cox residence anticipatinga peek of the body of the latest victim of gangviolence.Residents say people knowmore than they
let on but no-one would dare to speak out.“There is a lot of speculation about the
death of this young man,” a Kewtown seniortells People’s Post . “Among the speculatorsare thosewho knowmore than they let on butbecause they fear for their lives. They’ll nev-er say a word,” he says.Another resident says the place is “far too
quiet” for her liking.“It feels like this is the calm before the
storm and we all know when the calm is overa lot of people are going to get hurt,” she says.Turmoilwill eruptwhen themonth of Ram-
adan is over, a local says.
“I thinkgangs are trying to respect that thisis a holymonth forMuslims. But I don’t knowhow long it will last. Once the fasting is overthere is bound to be bloodshed.”Constable Zeta Norman from Athlone po-
lice says so far everything is in order.“The murder is currently under investiga-
tion but we can confirm that it is gang relat-ed,” she says.Norman adds that police are doing inten-
sive patrols in the area but says this does notmean they are neglecting the rest of Athlone.“No area is regarded as more important
than another,” she explains.“We are busy with intensive patrols all
over Athlone and will continue to do so foras long as is needed.”A resident from the area says she has peace
of mind with the regular patrolling of police.“We are all vigilant but it is nice to see the
police driving up and down all the time,” shesays.“It makes us all feel a bit safer but that does
not mean we should let our guards down. Weare always wary.”

SUMMER JACOBS AND LAILA MAJIET
JOYOUS pandemonium ensued at the un-veiling of the new Leliebloem House.
The Leliebloem Extreme Makeover, whichran from Friday to Sunday, has been a majorsuccess.Tears of joy, gasps of awe and the sound of
delighted children screaming with excite-ment was the scene which unfolded afterthree days of hard work. The Leliebloem Child and Youth Care Cen-
tre, based in Crawford, teamed with Heart104.9FM, local non-profit organisationNewkidz on the Block and 1 200 volunteers togive the centre’s 84 children a comfortableplace to live.Fresh paint, newgutters, anupgraded play-
ground, a new vegetable garden, blinds, cur-tains, beds, bedding, and a fresh roof are justsome of the new additions.Liza Rossouw, marketer and fundraiser for
Leliebloem, says the project has been muchbigger than she anticipated.
“Hearing the children shouting with joy isall I wanted. A beautiful home is all I wantedto give them,” says an emotional Rossouw.Volunteer Melany Bam says everybody is
needed to make a difference.“This is an opportunity for me to show my
six-year-old daughter the need to help oth-ers,” she says.Heart104.9 sports anchor Nick Feinberg
and his son also volunteered. He says: “I have a soft spot for childrenwho
are in need. It gives me the greatest of pleas-ure to help out. I broughtmy sonwithme andtried to explain to him the importance of giv-ing to the less fortunate.”Charne Jacobs says it brings her joy to do
good for others.“I started volunteering last year and I al-
ways try to offermy time toNewkidz projects. We need to remember that we only have now,as we don’t knowwhat the future holds so it’salways good to give of your time,” she says.“So a thousand thank-yous to everybody
that has been involved inmaking this projecta success.”

OVER400 people fromManenberg took tothe streets on Monday in protest of theProudly Manenberg leadership.
Protesters picketed at the organisation’sManenberg Waterfront offices in a bid to oustleader Mario Wanza and other executivemembers.
The organisation has come under fire for“failing the people of Manenberg” after gov-ernment terminated its contract as the imple-menting agent of the Community Work Pro-gramme. The project is an employment safe-ty net providing access to a minimum levelof regular work on an ongoing basis for thosein need.
Proudly Manenberg chairman Mario Wan-za says: “About 200 of our members marchedto Parliament on Thursday to dispute the ter-mination of our contract as this move had di-vided our organisation and the Manenbergcommunity.”
Following the loss of the contract, five ofthe group’s coordinators were expelled asthey had been campaigning with the commu-nity in a bid take ownership of the NPO.
Glenda Gain, one of the five expelled on 19July, says no reason had been given.
“At a recent meeting, members passed avote of no confidence against the executive of
the organisation. Wanza has failed the com-munity and I do not really want to go into de-tail about the matter. I was expelled withouta hearing,” she says.
Wanza says members had been expelled forcampaigning outside the group’s structures.
“Members were expelled for discreditingthe leadership of Proudly Manenberg. In-stead of addressing their concerns to us, theywent to the community,” he says.
However, Marwaan Jumah, who was alsoexpelled, says leadership failed the communi-ty after it lost the CWP contract.
“We showed dissatisfaction with the lead-ers and office bearers. Members passed a voteof no confidence against the leaders, but thiswas disregarded. Leaders within the organi-sation say we are campaigning against them, but truth is the organisation’s name has al-ready been tarnished and now the communi-ty is trying to take the organisation back,” hesays.
Gain says the community must own theNPO. “Wanza doesn’t even live here inManenberg,” she says.
However Wanza counters this, saying: ”Ihave lived in Manenberg from the age of twountil I was 29 years old. I moved out, but amliving in the area again.”
In an open letter to Zuma, Wanza says: “TheCWP complements and strengthens our workwhich creates the social safety net in build-ing our community. It provides additional ca-pacity and resources in building a newManenberg. The CWP – at two days work perweek – puts a plaster on a wound and muchmore needs to be done as a community tobring about change.”
Wanza says a letter tabled at a meetingwith Proudly Manenberg on 17 July states:“The institution will not be able to meet theservice delivery levels and compliance aslaid down by the Department of CooperativeGovernance and Traditional Affairs. There-fore, after consultation with all stakeholders,we have no alternative as to terminate theservices of Proudly Manenberg.”
Wanza says they will lay a case againstPresident Jacob Zuma.
Power struggle hits Manenberg
DETERMINED: Mario Wanza (centre) says heis determined to take action against govern-ment for wrongfully terminating their contract.

POLICE and law en-forcement have al-lowed a homeless wom-an to continue wander-ing the streets evenafter discovering she ismentally unstable.
For nearly twomonths,a woman– whose identityand age is unknown– hasbeen occupying the cor-ner of Huntley and Bran-don Street.
Rambling to herselfand living in her ownfilth, the barefoot womansits with glazed eyes – ob-livious to her surround-ings.Ragmat Alexander, a
Huntley Road resident, says she has not hada proper night’s rest since thewoman’s arriv-al.Worried about the woman’s safety and
“state of mind” Alexander has reached out tothe police and law enforcement for help buthas received none.“I have questioned this woman repeatedly
about where she comes from but I don’t thinkshe even hears me half of the time,” she says.“At other times she looks at me with a con-
fused expression on her face and is incoher-ent.”Alexander says she knew the woman had
no place to go when after three days of justlying there she still did not leave the spot.Unable to “turn a blind eye,” she called the
police and informed themabout the situation.“When the police showed
up they chatted to thewom-an and made jokes withher. When they were donethey told me they could seeshe was not normal andsaid I had to call Law En-forcement. I didn’t under-stand why they couldn’tcall themselves but Iwas sodesperate I didn’t mindcalling myself,” she says.Alexander says Law En-
forcement responded tohercall and took the womanaway. The woman washowever, back on the cor-ner the following day.Beverley Cortje-Alcock,
Mayoral Committee mem-ber for Social Development
and Early Childhood Development says theCity of Cape Town has a strategy to deal withstreet people in relation to the protocol agree-ment with provincial government.“TheCityhas a call centrewhere the public
can call in for assistance and a standby teamwill respond to the request and refer them toan assessment centre that will screen and doan assessment,” she says.“The assessmentwill be done by a qualified
social worker. Once assessed the person isthen referred to the necessary governmentdepartment, in this case the Health and pro-vincial Social Development Department”.Those who identify or encounter a street
person in distress can call the Response Cen-tre on 0800 87 2201.

PUPILS, parents and teachers atPeak View Secondary have mobi-lised themselves against thelooming closure of the school.
Pupils and staff held placard dem-onstrations outside the school lastweek and took to Klipfontein Roadin abid to get the broader communi-ty involved in ensuring the schooldoors remain open.Peak View is one of 27 schools in
the province facing closure.Grade 10 pupil Thaylyn Damas-
cio says: “The school needs to re-main open. The teachers at PeakView understand us. This school isour future and education is the keyto all our successes.”Grade 9 pupil Umrah Tofah says: “This is
a school for everyone. I only arrived at thisschool this year and already I feel this iswhere I belong. Teachers listen to your prob-lems and offer assistance where they can, en-couraging us to do well.”The school’s matric pass rate has dropped
from 66.7% in 2008 to 18.9% in 2011. Last year, seven pupils passedmatric at Peak View Sec-ondary.Deputy principal Laetitia Philander says
Grade 11 pupils will suffer the most if theschool closes down.“I became veryworriedwhen one ofmy top
students inGrade 11 askedme if other schoolswould accept himgiven that he attendedPeakView. Some pupils have said they will ratherdrop out because they fear they will not beplaced elsewhere.”Community worker Muriel Susa says:
“Governmentwants to createmore gangsters
by closing the school. Schools in the area arealready overcrowded. These pupils are hu-man too. If there is a problem, the educationdepartment should do more to assist theschool, as opposed to just closing the school.I will mobilise this community to ensurePeak View stays open.”The school’s caretaker, Kenneth Adams
(52), says his family would be hard hit if theschool closed down. “If the school closes I willlosemy job.Where will I findwork after this? Two of my grandchildren attend the school.Peak View is a like a family.“Thepupils arenotwithout their problems,
but they are at least being given the opportu-nity to be educated. Fromhere onwe can onlyhope for the best.”The school will hold a public hearing on 18
August at 9:00 at the BridgetownCommunityCentre. The hearingwill give people a chanceto voice their concerns about the imminentclosure.
Bid to save Peak View

Smoke signalsTHE Western Cape is burning.
Election promises have been found want-ing in Mitchell’s Plain, Philippi, Manenberg,Nyanga, Gugulethu, Sir Lowry’s Pass Village,Grabouw and Botrivier.
The hourglass of patience tested, the peopleof this province have stopped asking andwaiting for government to honour thesepromises. It is, after all, 18 years into SouthAfrica’s democracy.
The time is now for the government to stepup and deliver. Voters have taken to thestreets in droves throughout the province toprotest poor or non-existent service deliveryand education.
In the aftermath, the streets are litteredwith bricks and the debris of overturnedtrash cans, damaged street lamp poles, thecharred remains of tyres and the notoriouspeak-hour traffic has been diverted from ma-jor roads. The N2 and Sir Lowry’s Pass havebeen closed to traffic during the protests.
Instead of listening – and acting upon thepleas of the people – the government has re-sponded with brute force.
Their answer? Some protesters were arrest-ed and hurt during skirmishes with the po-lice.
Outraged protesters were quietened withtear gas, rubber bullets and a water cannon.
Setting alight public facilities such asschools must be frowned upon.
Other ratepayers may have little empathyfor such actions, but they may not be the onesadversely affected by the failures of govern-ment to provide basic services.
It makes little sense to damage infrastruc-ture and government property – meant foruse by the people. Especially in view thereofthat, nearly two decades later, attempts by thedemocratically-elected government remainsterile in addressing basic needs.
Harking to the media visuals of the heightof anti-apartheid protests, the city aflame re-sembles the burning hopes of many.
Or, perhaps, their hopes have regressed in-to ashes.
THE killing on our tar surfaces just goes up andup.
Govermental bodies change the law from cul-pable homicide to murder in cases of tragic acci-dents.
We hold blitzes and roadblocks on highwaysand byways and yet the killings on the roads stillgo up, causing grief to victim’s families.
Now a new measure is in place to fine and takemotorists’ cellphones because maybe these cell-phone conversations while driving is the causeof death and destruction on the roads.
Cameras are placed all over to monitor, butthe death and carnage carry on.
The next plan is to make it law that two driversmust be in vehicles doing long distance.
I conclude that the one driver will sleep andthe other one drives. When the takeover at thedriver’s seat takes place we have a fresh vibrant
driver who can push his/her foot hard on thepedal. I am so scared to use the word “speed”because every time a member of the public statesor suggests that “speed kills”, this real killer onthe road is not being addressed by being re-duced.
At every major accident where people havebeen killed the cause was drivers driving toofast. How do we stop this?
By bringing down the “speed limit”.Those who have the power to do so should note
the quote by Arnold Bennett: “Any change, evenfor the better, is always accompanied by draw-backs and discomforts.”
Please listen and do what you know is the solu-tion so you can conform to the Spanish proverb:“A wise man changes his mind, a fool neverwill.”KEITH ALFRED ADOLPH BLAKE
Driving fast kills and damages
I HAVE known (of) People’s Post for manyyears, but confess I have never been an avidreader until recently. I particularly enjoyedyour column on Mandela Day and DistrictSix last week and I told myself I won’t be miss-ing any of your future editions.
This week I read your column “Rememberthe spirit” focusing on the (Muslim) holymonth of Ramadan. I found the piece inform-ative and well-written.
Sometimes it is very easy for people andmany readers in general to simply turn to the
next page when they see a topic that is notin their interest or directly affecting theirlives and move to the sport or news page.
I must say I admire your ability to makecurrent but over-covered topics interestingto read. Mandela Day and Ramadan are top-ics we are bombarded (with) by the dailymainstream (media) all day and to read any-thing about them in a weekly becomes taboo. Please keep up about the good work and con-gratulations to the entire team.SIVUYILE MBAMBATO
Kudos to the People’s Post team
. I personally feel Vanguard Driveshould remain and not change be-cause it is a well-known name to allin South Africa. Please don’tchange it. It is also a land mark.
. Why doesn’t government usethe money to improve our housingand health system? Now they wantto waste the taxpayers’ money tochange street names – the changingof a street will not help the poor.
. With regard to the street namechanges: why in heaven’s namewould government need to changestreet names? It is a waste of money!People need food and houses.
. Why spend money on changingroad names? They should utilisethe money for something else. Also, why are they spending so muchmoney on the Nantes in Bridget-own? That money could be used tobuild many houses for the lower in-come people.
. I think Summer Jacobs is an ex-cellent journalist. Keep up the goodwriting. You will still go far.
. Why are there asinine “come-dy” shows on SABC3 on Mondaysnights? Why do they make us waituntil after 22.00 for an intelligentprogramme like CSI?Maggie James
. Easy off Bang 2 removes mouldfrom walls.
. Is the pet registration cut-offdate 31 July or 31 August? Bothdates are shown in the article inPeople’s Post of 24 July.People’s Post apologises for the er-
ror. The correct date is Friday 31 Au-gust.
. Is the campaign to registeryour pet a big joke? Rather registerdrug lords and gangsters. The cam-paign will never work what with la-zy officials in a dysfunctional sys-tem.

Fest to surf into Guinness recordsMUIZENBERG will be awash withsurfers who will attempt to breakthe Guinness World Record for themost surfers riding the same wave.
The event, hosted during the BOSEarthwave Beach Festival, will takeplace at Surfers Corner on Saturday 29and Sunday 30 September.
The fifth annual edition of this popu-lar festival will again harness the in-terest surrounding the GuinnessWorld Records to promote sustainablelifestyle choices by featuring competi-tive and fun events in the ocean and onthe beach.
A host of exhibitions, demonstra-
tions and talks on environmental is-sues will take place over the two days.
Paul Botha, fromorganisersKahunaPromotions, says the festival hasgrown into one of the biggest surfing-related events since the first record at-tempt in 2007.
“Since 2006, when 73 surfers were re-corded on the same wave, the festivalhas become one of the surfing world’sbiggest mass participation events,”says Botha.
“This year we’re expecting evenmore people to participate in andwatch events such as longboard andgrom surfing, SUP and surfski races, touch rugby and volleyball tourna-
ments, along with plenty of activitiesfor children.”
There will also be give-aways, stick-er-showers, beach cleanups, rafflesand fundraising. The fiesta ends witha party featuring a live band and a hi-larious auction.

FOUR dedicated young HanoverPark karateka will showcasetheir talents at the Reunion – anisland east of Madagascar – inSeptember.
The four karate kids were select-ed to represent the national teamaf-ter impressing selectors at the Ky-okushinkai National Champion-ships in Port Elizabeth last month. At the tournament Keagan Dan-
iels, Najmunesa Jacobs, MeganArends and Naasik Kamish all wontheir respective divisions. The four were among the more
than 500 karate practitioners fromacross SA at nationals, held at theNelson Mandela Metropole Univer-sity. Their achievement of being se-lected to wear the green and gold iseven more impressive when theircircumstances are taken into ac-count.Sensei Deen Daniels, head in-
structor of the Hanover Park andRuyterwacht Kyokushin Karatedojos, says the students overcameseveral challenges.“These kids are at risk all the
time. They have to walk throughthe flats to get to club. There is theodd chance they might be walkingwhen the gangs are doing theirthing,” says Daniels.“So I think in that regards it is
quite a special achievement. Theyhave the option of doing this or suc-cumbing to peer pressure – theychoose to do this.”They train in the hall of Crystal
High School at least twice a weekand also at a venue in Ruyterwacht.“I pick up some of the students, butI can’t pick them all up. We finishat 20:00 when Hanover Park is at itsquietest. Even ourselves inside thisbuilding . . . you never quite feel se-cure.”The school does not have gates or
fencing as it was stolen. In spite of these difficulties, Kea-
gan won his division at the tourna-
ment for the second consecutivetimeandalso competed in themen’sdivision. The 17-year-old Crystal High pu-
pil says karate is his passion andhopes to make it his career. “I justwant to go as far as this allows meto. I want to reach the highest levelthat there is – the 10th dan,” he com-ments.“If you are a high rank in the
world, you travel the world, com-peting, free of charge.”Keagan has been practising kara-
te since the age of four and hopesto follow in his uncle Deen’s foot-steps, running his own dojo.Najmunesa, who won her divi-
sion and was disqualified in the fi-nal of thewomen’s final, has also sether sights on a high rank and herown dojo. Her short term goal is tobeat her competitors to the top spotin Reunion.
“In my group I want to win, butI want to fight women and win forour country,” says Najmunesa.“I train everyday; karate is my
life and that’s what I want toachieve in life.”Both Najmunesa and Keagan are
black belts and assistant instruc-tors at the dojo.Eleven of Daniels’ students took
part in nationals, with 10 returningwith medals in one or more event. The four who will represent SA
all participated in the full contactevents, while the others showedtheir skills in the semi-contact com-petition.The SA representatives have to
cover their own transport costs toReunion, with the club hosting afunfair as a fundraiser.Anyone interested in assisting
the dojo can contact Daniels0 082 978 2508.

LIAM MOSES
CLAIMS of inferior quality gifts to Olym-pic athletes have been brushed aside bythe provincial Department of Cultural Af-fairs and Sport.
The gifts were handed to local Olympic ath-letes at the send-off when 35 athletes, officials, coaches and managers were honoured at Ath-lone Stadium on Tuesday 10 July.
Alison Smith, the sister of an Olympic ath-lete, wrote to People’s Post highlighting thepoor quality of a framed Olympic T-shirt.
From the front the framework seems in-tact, but on the reverse the T-shirt is tackedto the frame with pins. In the image some ofthe pins have fallen off and there is no card-board or other backing to secure the T-shirt.The overall look is that the framing is incom-plete.
She does not want her brother’s name men-tioned, adding athletes are not allowed tospeak to the media about the Olympics.
“I just thought it was very poor and it feltlike a bit of a kick in the teeth. All the athleteshave been working really hard to get to thisplace and I just don’t think they can proudlyaccept something like that,” says Smith.
“It looks like something a child has done.I would think it would be really nice for theWestern Cape sports people to be recognised,
but with something like that I just felt it isvery poor.”
The athletes also received gift bags contain-ing, among others small gifts, a scarf in aSouth African flag print.
In response, MEC for the Department ofCultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, says the athletes should “be grateful” for thegifts.
Refusing to specifically speak on the T-shirt, Meyer would also not elaborate on whowas responsible for the framing or how muchit cost.
“In the African tradition one is alwaysgrateful for whatever gift one receives as webelieve it is not the size of the gift, but thethought that counts,” says Meyer.
He says the provincial government“thought it fit to honour Western Cape Olym-pic athletes. This we did within the contextof the understanding that taxpayers’ moneymust be spent responsibly and ... not reckless-ly on expensive gifts or elaborate functions”.
The Olympians should remember they areserving their country, Meyer adds.
“The highest honour for any athlete is theopportunity to represent one’s country at theOlympics. The Western Cape government haspublicly acknowledged those athletes whohave achieved this and who unselfishly un-derstand this honour is about serving yourcountry and not the other way round.”
