Do you know who’s lurking in yourstreet while you sleep?Following a spree of break-ins over
the past two months and a lack of faith inthe local police, Gleemoor residents have de-cided to take ownership of their streets andamp up security. Each household in Westbrooke Road andthe section of Boeschoten Road betweenThornton Road and Mains Avenue hasagreed to contribute amonthly fixed amountto employ the services of a private securitycompany to combat opportunistic thieveswhohave been targeting homes in the neigh-bourhood.
The private security company will aug-ment the efforts of the neighbourhoodwatch.Gleemor Civic Association chairpersonJeff Paulse says this neighbourhood streetsecuritywatchproject, as referred to by resi-dents, will first be tested in these specificstreets before being rolled out into the largerGleemoor community.“We have taken a pro-active approach byemploying this 24-hour street securitywatch. We have a very active neighbour-hoodwatch in the areawhowill continue pa-trolling but most of the members work andwe require extra security during the day,”he says.Paulse says in light of the escalating crimeand lack ofmanpower, extra security has be-
come a priority. “We will have a three-month trial run to see how this projectworks and then we aim to extend it to therest of the community,” he says. The decision comes as a result of residents“not being satisfied with police presence” inthe usually quiet suburb.“Here is only one sector van patrolling inthis entire vicinity and it is a large area forone vehicle to service,” he says.“They take long to respond to a call andaren’t able to patrol often enough for thievesto be scared off.”Sunnyside Neighbourhood Watch chair-person Greg Forbes says he is excited aboutthe project, and feels it will have a positiveimpact on crime prevention.“It is always difficult to get people on
board with a project like this, especially ifthey have to spend money. Testing theproject in a smaller areamakes it easier and,if successful, it will help convince the restof the community to buy into the idea,” hesays.Athlonepolice spokespersonConstable Zi-ta Norman says it is sad when residents feelpolice are not coming to the party and optto invest in private security companies.“We are constantly working to improvepolice presence in all areas. Our currentcrimehotspots areRondeboschEast, Belgra-via Estate, Rylands and Gleemoor. Thecrime increase in these areas are largelydrug-related, butweareaddressing the issueand deploy extra manpower as needed,” shesays.

ATHLONE: HISTORIC LANDMARK REPAIRED
Massacre memorial restoredTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
Ahistoric piece of Athlone has been re-stored.
The Trojan Horse Massacre memo-rial was vandalised in October last year andresidents have been fighting with the Cityof Cape Town to give the site a facelift.
Finally their pleas have been heard as thehistoric site has received a coat of bright redpaint, the words are no longer washed outand stand out against the iron backgroundin white, the iron rods have been solderedinto position and the name plaques will bereplaced in plastic.
Thieves had previously stolen the copper
plaques of the three young men – JonathanClaasen (21), Shaun Magmoed (15) andMichael Miranda (11) – who tragically losttheir lives on the corner of St Simon’s andThornton roads on 15 October 1985.
Various other iron rods had also been sto-len from the structure and locals felt it need-ed a fresh look.
This memorial site pays tribute to thememory of the three young people who diedduring the massacre, as well as the 13 adultsand two children injured during the am-bush by apartheid security forces.
On that fateful day, a crowd angry at theapartheid regime gathered on the corner.
A railway delivery truck driven by secu-rity force members and South African
Transport Services employees drove pastwith Security Force members, police andother military officers hidden in woodencrates on the back.
As the vehicle passed, a protester threwa stone at the vehicle and security forcesopened fire.
Resident Greg Forbes says it is a daymany remember and the memorial is a bigpart of Athlone’s history.
“It is important that we maintain this me-morial site as it reminds us of the strugglewe had endured. Many people lost theirlives during apartheid and this structure isjust another way to honour those who wer-en’t lucky enough to make it, but also to re-mind us of how lucky we are,” he says.

ATHLONE: WORKERS ‘UNEMPLOYED’ AFTER HOLIDAYS
Labour underfalse sense ofjob securityTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
It’s been a grim start to the year for the staffof an Athlone factory.
Every day a handful of workers return totheir former place of employment, hopingto find the doors open.
But a month after returning to the Show-master factory and finding operations shut, they are still in the dark about their futures.
Staff returned to work from the Decem-ber holiday on Monday 20 January only tofind the premises locked.
They have been left jobless without warn-ing and with payment out standing.
Factory worker Ernest Frank has beenworking for the company for 17 years andsays he is devastated about the sudden re-versal of fortune.
“We returned to work from the Decemberbreak but when we got to the factory every-thing was closed,” he says.
A a day before they were scheduled to re-turn to work, Frank says he received anSMS from his employer stating they shouldwait a day before returning.
According to him, the SMS stated thatone of the managers could not make it backfrom Johannesburg in time to open the fac-tory, and staff were to come in on the Tues-day.
“My supervisor had a key and we allagreed to meet at work the Monday to getan early start.” Frank says.
A sense of foreboding at the factoryprompted the supervisor to make a fewcalls.
“We just had a feeling something wasn’tright. We returned the next day as told butstill there was no one,” he says.
“I immediately knew something wasn’tright and tried to contact the boss, but therewas no answer.”
Workers eventually met up with the pro-duction manager the Wednesday and wereinformed the company had gone into finan-cial difficulty and could no longer employeethem.
“Just like that, without warning, we weretold we had to find other work. We all havefamilies who depend on our income to sur-vive,” a frustrated Frank says.
Before going on holiday, workers weregiven half their payment and were prom-ised the remainder when they returned towork.
“They let us go without paying the other
half of our wages and there is no money inour provident funds or UIF to pay us,” hefumes.
Production manager Nickholas Liede-man confirms auditors investigating thecompany’s financial status and being de-nied access to the premises is impeding in-vestigations.
“The landlord has put a chain around thedoor so we are unable to access the build-ing. Our auditors are sorting through ac-counts and figures but it is difficult as wehave been unable to get hold of our financialmanager since returning to work,” he says.
Liedeman could not comment on the alle-gations of the provident fund and UIF notbeing paid into workers’ accounts.
He does, however, mention that theywere working on getting paperwork in or-der so that they can give workers feedback.
“I can’t comment on employees wages orfunds as our auditors are still trying to getthe figures sorted. I am trying to get the sit-uation sorted by the end of the week so I canlet workers know what is going on,” Liede-man adds.
Fellow worker Richard Arnold says theyhave been informed by their union, the Met-al and Electrical Workers Union of SouthAfrica (Mewusa), that payments to theirprovident funds had not been kept up todate. “Even though they have been deduct-ing money from every employee, no moneyhas been paid into our funds –not a centfrom the employer or of our monthly deduc-tions,” he claims.
Arnold says he feels lost and fears the fu-ture. “I don’t know what to do. If I don’t havea job, there won’t be money for food, clothesor my children’s school fees,” he wails.
“Where will we find work now? If we hadbeen made aware of the situation earlier wecould have been looking for work in the hol-iday already.”
Mewusa chairperson Abduraghmaan Ad-ams confirms no money in a provident fundis available to pay workers.
“It has been brought to our attention thatthere is no money available to pay workerstheir outstanding payment. We have urgedworkers to remain calm and not take thelaw into their own hands while we try tonegotiate a solution,” he says.
Adams adds that when they met with em-ployers they were unable to give them anyanswers. “All they kept saying was theydon’t know what to say. That is unaccepta-ble,” he insists.

SOCIAL GRANTS: NEW ANTIFRAUD MEASURE
Sassa rolls out voice technologyCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
Social grant corruption and fraud is ex-pected to be reduced with the introduc-tion of a voice activation system.
The South African Social Security Agency(Sassa) started with the first phase of theproject’s roll-out in January whereby select-ed beneficiaries were sent an SMS to regis-ter for re-registration.
The second phase is set to take place dur-ing March and includes all other beneficiar-ies who were not sent an SMS last month butare using their PINs to access their grants.
“The Proof of Life Certification was intro-duced to eradicate fraud in the system to en-sure that grants are paid to the right people,”says Sassa acting communications managerKgomoco Diseko.
The new technology functions the same asthe PIN and fingerprint verification sys-tems, but will be more efficient to shortenlong queues at the pay points, Diseko says.
“We will start requiring beneficiaries tocall a number at the beginning of the monthand to follow the voice prompts in order toverify their voices and do what is called ‘life
certification’ in the same way finger biomet-rics is done.”
Beneficiaries who are of ill health mustappoint a procurator to represent them andmust also request house visits from their lo-cal Sassa offices when they want to register.During home visits, both the procurator andbeneficiary should be present for the voicerecording of the procurator.
Beneficiaries are assured that if they havenot received an SMS for the voice recogni-tion, their grants will still be paid.
When beneficiaries call they have to fol-low the voice prompts so their voices can bematched to the voice recording which wastaken during Sassa re-registration.
Verification can be done in several lan-guages.
Once the voice print has been validated, the system will inform beneficiaries of suc-cessful verification and the social grant be-comes available immediately.V To register for voice activation, call 0860 690 717from a Telkom line, cellphone or public phone. Alterna-tively call 082 1277 if you are using a starter pack thatwas issued during grant re-registration. This numberis free and starter packs can be obtained from localSassa offices.

LINCOLN ESTATE: DEAF RESIDENTS BATTLE WITH ILLEQUIPPED POLICE
Couple’s communication battleTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
A lack of equipped staff and insensitivepolice officers has left a deaf LincolnEstate resident fuming.
Elizabeth Louw and her husband, who isalso deaf, live with their two sons in SatireRoad.
She says her eldest son is a drug addict andregularly steals from them and vandalisestheir property.
Every time Elizabeth tries to report an in-cident she needs to rely on neighbours or heryoungest son to translate or communicatewith the police.
“There was recently a break-in at ourhouse and I had to wait for my son to comehome so he could call the police,” she says.
When the officers arrived, she realised toher dismay there was no interpreter onhand.
“The officers were very impatient with meand made me feel like I was inconveniencingthem. They couldn’t communicate with meand were very rude. They just left,” she says.
Elizabeth struggles to grasp how therecan be no translators, SMS helpline or spe-cial officers to whom deaf people could re-port their complaints.
“People are still very uneducated and ig-norant when it comes to dealing with deafpeople,” she fumes.
Elizabeth has been to the station numer-ous times to report complaints.
“The officers ignore me because we can’tcommunicate and laugh among each otherin front of me.”
Athlone police spokesperson Constable Zi-ta Norman confirms the Louws have hadtrouble with their son and says all necessary
steps were followed to assist them.“I have attended to them in my after- hours
capacity and with patience have gone to takea docket from this couple,” she says.
The son was found guilty on charges ofhouse burglary and was sentenced to 18months imprisonment in October, Norman
says.She insists disrespectful behaviour to-
wards deaf people will not be tolerated.“All police members are being nominated
to go on a level one training in sign lan-guage,” Norman says. “Each station has abudget which makes allowance for getting
an interpreter in or a fully trained interpret-er within the police force, which is free.
“Anyone who has a disability and feelsgrieved by the assistance of an officer cangive a written complaint to the Station Com-mander or myself as such behaviour shallnot be tolerated,” she adds.

Prisonersto vote
AllWesternCapeprisonerswill have theopportunity to register for the elec-tionsduringa registrationdrivewhich
commenced yesterday (Wednesday 5 Febru-ary) and ends tomorrow (Friday). This came after the Constitutional Court
found the limitations on prisoners’ rights tovote were unconstitutional.People’s Post readers have their say.
SERENA DE MONK believes prisoners should notbe afforded the same rights as the public. “Theyhave terrorised communities and should not havean opinion on the way forward for our country.”
LEATICIA JANTJIES believes the ruling was a goodmove. “Prisoners must have a say as well. Irre-spective of their crimes, they should be affordedthe same voting rights.”
PALESA LESAOANA agrees with the ruling . “Thevote is not just for themselves; they are also mak-ing that mark to influence their children’s future,”she says.
ELIZABETH JAFTA feels strongly about the pro-gressive move. “Prisoners should definitely havea say, regardless of their crimes. It is a right thatshould be afforded to all.”
CRUWIN MACFARY feels the decision will be ap-preciated by many prisoners. “I have an uncle inprison and he will definitely welcome this news,”he says.
CRAIG DE VOS says prisoners all deserve to vote.“Their mindsets might have changed while serv-ing their sentences, so they deserve to be partof the voting process.”
RICHARD DA SILVA gives the decision a thumbsup. “They are doing their time; that is punishmentenough. Their rights shouldn’t be stripped fromthem.”
PEOPLE'S POST | ATHLONEThursday, 6 February 2014 NEWS 7MANENBERG: BATTLE TO MANAGE INFLUX OF PUPILS
No room for improvementCARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
Schools in Manenberg have reached ca-pacity and teachers are at their wits’end.
Principals at Manenberg, SilverstreamandPhoenix high schools have revealed thatclassrooms now have to accommodate up to50 pupils. The provincial education department has
confirmed an increase of more than 10 000pupils attending school in the province thisyear. The department says schools have en-
rolled about 13 000 more pupils for 2014.However, while this comes as good news
for education in the province, teachers arefinding it difficult to cope with the addedstrain.Manenberg High School principal
Thurston Brown says they are beyond theircapacity threshold. “In most of our class-roomswe have over 40 students. Some class-es have up to 50. In the past we had an aver-age of 35,” he says.Brown says teachers now have to adopt
new skills tomanage the overcrowded class-rooms. “What naturally happens in thesesituations is that there are issues arounddiscipline and classroom management. The
teachers have to develop their own teach-ingmethodology to overcome the challengeof overcrowding,” he says. When People’s Post visited the school on
Friday, pupils were seen wandering aboutaimlessly and causing a disruption.“Somedays it’s like this becausewedon’t
have enough teachers. Last year we had 28teachers and this year the department hasasked that we only have 26. So these are thethings that we have to deal with,” he says.Phoenix High principal Shafiek Abra-
hams is equally troubled about the situa-tion. “I’m not happy about it but we justhave to make do with what we have,” hesays. “In areas like this it is difficult to turnthe children away. Where will they go?”Abrahamsexplains that parents living in
poorer areas often cannot afford to sendtheir children to schools in more affluentareas. “If we turn the pupil awaywe are ba-sically robbing them of an education andsending them to become gangsters, drugaddicts or prostitutes,” Abrahams says.Principal AnthonyPietersen says Silver-
stream High School is experiencing otherproblems due to a shortage of teachers.“We never have enough teachers here to
look after all the children,” he says. “Someof our former pupils and drop-outs have be-come gangsters. These guys are coming in-
to the school during the day in school uni-form. They have become an unruly elementand have a bad influence on our scholars.”Pietersen says the gangsters hide in class-
rooms that are unattended due to the absenceof teachers. “If we had more teachers, wewould never have this problem,” he says. One pupil, who spoke to People’s Post on
condition of anonymity, says she struggles tofocus during lessons because her class isovercrowded. “Sometimes the teacher can’tcontrol all the students. There are a lot of uswhowant to learn, but in the big classes thereare always disruptive children,” she says.
Education department spokesperson Pad-dy Attwell says schools can apply for addi-tional posts if they experienced an unexpect-ed swell in pupils.“The department will provide additional
accommodation if necessary. This will prob-ably involve installingmobile classrooms inthe short to medium-term,” he says.Thedepartment canalso provide addition-
al teaching and learning materials, Attwellcontinues. “We have multi-disciplinaryteams who work with schools to deal withteaching, learning and school managementand safety.”

SCHOOL TRANSPORT: PILOT PROGRAMME AIMS FOR PUPILS TO ARRIVE ALIVE
A much safer road aheadTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
Worried about your child’ssafety on the road?A pilot programme using a
driver performance monitoring de-vice will help keep drivers in line.Last week, a well-known medical
aid service provider in partnershipwith Childsafe launched the SafeTravel to School programme at Nor-ma Road Primary in Silvertown. The initiative is aimed at making
the journey to and fromschool as safeas possible for children by changingdriver behaviour. The medical aid service provider’s
CEO Anton Ossip says the Safe Trav-el to School programme has the abili-ty to make a significant difference tothe lives of many children. The Safe Travel to School pro-
gramme is targeted at vehicle opera-tors who transport children to andfrom school daily.“We ventured into this project be-
cause we believe that children arethe most vulnerable in society. This was anareawherewebelievewe canmake a signifi-cant difference,” he says.“The inherent belief is that if we canmake
people aware of the risks that are inherentin how they drive and incentivise them toimprove, we can make a significant differ-ence to themselves, to society andultimatelykeep people safer on the road.”Each quarter the top three drivers will re-
ceive a cash reward and at the end of eachyear the safest driver according to the datawill be rewarded with a brand new car.National minister of Transport Dipuo Pe-
ters acknowledges the horror on the coun-try’s roads, which claim up to 40 lives everyday, and touched on the drastic impact ofroad crashes globally.“As road users, we have a collective re-
sponsibility to work together to improve
road safety in our country and protect ourchildren from unnecessary injuries anddeaths as they are the future participatingmembers of our society,” Peters says.“We recognise that the Safe Travel to
School programme will play an importantrole in helping to reduce the number of road-related crashes and deaths, and promote aculture of discipline, responsibility and ac-countability, which we sorely need.”
Peters says while government iscommitted to fighting the scourge ofroad crashes, and improving roadsafety, government cannot achievethis alone and needs engagement.Childsafe and Global Road Safety
Partnership SouthAfrica chairpersonProfessor Sebastian van As believesby instilling better behaviour in driv-ers they can reduce the high roadcrash rate that often involves childrenof school-going age.“I am thrilled at the potential of the
programme to impact positively onpeople’s lives, especially that of youngchildren. Safe Travel to School willhelp driverswho transport children toand from school on a daily basis to be-come better drivers who are moreaware of road safety issues,” Van Assays.TheDQTrack System, whichwill be
installed in vehicles that meet the re-quired criteria, will enable DiscoveryInsure to measure how well the schol-ar transporters drive, encourage themto improve their driving behaviourthrough an innovative reward pro-
gramme and find out how well they under-stand and abide by road safety rules. The Safe Travel to School programme,
which will be rolled out in 12-month stintsover a period of five years, will commencewithapilot programme in theWesternCape.South Africa has one of the world’s high-
est road crash rates, and our roads, especial-ly for children of school-going age, are oneof the deadliest to travel on.

A new tutoring programme being rolledout at primary schools in Athlone aimsto improve literacy and numeracy skills. The appeal from ward councillor Su-
zette Little for retired teachers and volun-teers in the community to sign up andhelp as assistant teachers has been an-swered.Five schools in Athlone are already us-
ing these tutors in their schools to givepupils in the foundation phase more one-on-one teaching time. The schools that have come on board
areKewtown,NormaRoad,Bokmakierie,AthloneNorth andBlossomStreet prima-ry schools.Little says she is very excited about the
project as there is a great need to improveliteracy and numeracy skills from ayoung age.“Principals have agreed to give guide-
lines and procedures that need to be fol-lowed. Tutors will be directed to assist inareas of need by principals and will workclosely with educators,” she explains.Blossom Street Primary principal
Michael Davids says the school tried asimilar programme six years ago whichresulted in a major academic improve-ment.
“In all schools there is a big need to im-prove the literacy and numeracy of pu-pils. There are children from differentbackgrounds entering our schools withdifferent levels of skills,” he says.“By giving them that individual teach-
ing we are able to close the gap betweenpupils much quicker.”Davids says during their last pro-
gramme, many of the volunteers went tostudy and are now qualified teachers.“It doesn’t onlyuplift the pupils and the
school but helps to uplift the communityas well,” he adds.Tutors will be focusing on giving chil-
dren individual attention and helpingthemwith storytelling, phonics, high fre-quency words and reading aloud.Pupilswill be read to by tutors and then
have to read back to them.Bokmakierie Primary School principal
Larry Lewis says because the number ofpupils in a class is so large, the individualattention will make a big impact.“It is difficult for teachers to give all the
children in the class the individual atten-tion they sometimes need if there are somany. That’s why we are excited aboutthis project,” he says.“By addressing the issues with literacy
and numeracy skills in the lower grades,we eliminate the problem in the highergrades.” READ INTO IT: A tutor programme has kicked off in five Athlone schools. PHOTO: TARREN-LEE HABELGAARN

CRIME: EYES ON RUMMAGERS
No wheels tobring change?TAURIQ HASSEN
@TauriqHassen
Are trolleys a convenience for scrap col-lectors or the getaway “vehicle” forpetty thieves?
Last year a total of 276 shopping trolleyswere confiscated and impounded by theCity of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement. However, Law Enforcement officials
maintain it has become difficult to effec-tively tackle this issue when stores fail tolay charges.“We had numerous early morning opera-
tions in most of the wards and confiscatedmost of the trolleys from the homeless peo-ple, but unfortunately the businessesrefuse to lay criminal charges against theseoffenders,” InspectorWayne Petersen says.Director for Safety and Security Richard
Bosman says unless the owners of the shop-ping carts are prepared to register a caseof theft of property, “it is not illegal to bein possession of a shopping trolley”.However, on average, Law Enforcement
confiscates 15 shopping carts a month, which amounts to an average of 180 to 200carts per year.“At present, due to the absence of an ap-
propriate legislative process, no action canbe takenagainst the owners,”Bosman says.“However, theCityhasaprescribed tariff
for trolleys that are impounded which ischarged on collection of the trolley by theowners.”He adds that the challenge for the City is
getting the owners to press charges and, inmany cases, the carts are vandalised andcannot be identified.“The lack of a bylaw to charge offending
parties is also an obstacle the City hopes toovercome,” Bosman says.“If the owner registers a case of theft, the
perpetrator will be arrested for the of-fence.”Residents are adamant that impounding
shopping carts is the answer to the illegaldumping problems plaguing Cape Town.Resident Anthony Jordaan believes trol-
leys are vagrants’ means of carting aroundstolen goods. He says they “head to scrap dealers to
make easy money”.“I am glad to hear something is being
done about it. I once caught guys (with atrolley) trying to steal my front gate,” Jor-daan insists.“The companies responsible for these
trolleys must ensure there is proper en-forcement measures at their businesses sothe trolleys are not stolen.”Suneel Khan blames the “trolley bri-
gade” for many vacant plots becomingdumping hotspots. He says a local artery is a famous dump-
ing spot among the “trolley brigade” due tothe lack of adequate lighting and visible po-licing. “It definitely helps to have the trol-leys removed, because many of the va-grants rely heavily on this as a means totransport their goods. And it’smostlywastethat will be dumped,” Khan says.

Pet welfare on the moveCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
Communities which did not have ac-cess to sterilisation units no longerneed to worry about unwanted lit-
ters.The Animal Rescue Organisation has
launched its Mobile Animal SterilisationUnit (Masu).
Individuals and companies have madethe dream of this unique unit a reality bymeans of donations to the organisation. The unit cost R400 000 to roll out and con-centrates solely on the sterilisation of an-imals.
It is equipped with a full theatre con-sisting of operating table, geyser, genera-tors, a refrigerator and medicine storagefacilities to carry out these procedures.
The unit will operate in impoverishedcommunities three to four hours’ drivefrom Cape Town.
A pre-campaign will be done in ruralareas to establish who the pet owners arethat need to access a sterilisation unit.
Only thenwillMasube sent out to theseoutlying areas.
The unit will run an intensive cam-paign over five days in an area and willbe accessible to the people who took partin the pre-campaign.
The unit consists of one veterinarian, one veterinarynurse, two animalwelfareassistants and one general assistant andcan accommodate about 20 animals perday.
V If you would like to make a donation to Masuto help cover the costs of procedures, medical ex-penses and the upkeep of the unit, contact Karende Klerk on 021 396 5511.
CARE: A mobile sterilisation campaign target-ing pets in poorer areas has been launched bythe Animal Rescue Organisation.

One person can save seven lives.South Africa is one of the countries
with the lowest organ donation rates in theworld.
Currently, 4 300 adults and children arewaiting for organ transplants across thecountry.
But a lack of registered donors mean thechance of enhancing or saving a potential re-cipient’s life is slim.
Organ transplantation is the surgical re-moval of an organ or tissue from a donor andplacing it into a recipient.
The beneficiaries could be people with endstage solid kidney, heart, liver, pancreas orlung disease or people receiving tissue dona-tion in the form of bone, bone marrow, corne-as, skin or heart valves.
Most donated organs are from people whohave died, referred to as a cadaver donation, but living people also donate kidneys and tis-sue such as blood, stem cells and platelets.
New startOver 25 years ago, Sathanathan Samuels
(67) was dependent on dialysis to keep himalive.
His kidneys had shrunk to “the size of mar-bles” due to uncontrolled blood pressure.
He waited for five months before his trans-plant was done.
“This is much less than most people, seeingas some of them could be on dialysis for years
while waiting for an organ,” he says.Samuels was also lucky enough to have
a dialysis machine equipped at his home. One condition of the loaned machine wasthat he motivate people from the Muslimcommunity to donate their organs.
The pensioner says doctors had testedhis immediate family for a kidney match, but none of them were compatible.
Samuels received a kidney from an un-known donor and his transplant was donein 1987.
He says that he is ever grateful for hav-ing been privileged enough to receive anorgan donation as he is now able to see hissix grandchildren grow up.
Saving livesProvincial health minister Theuns
Botha says patients waiting for organs re-quire on-going carewhile theirhealthdete-riorates,whichplaces an increasedburdenon the health services.
“As a country, we need to aim for at least1% of the South African population beingregistered as organ donors by the end of2014 and we will start to save lives,” hesays.
There are currently four hospitals in theprovince which perform transplants:Christiaan Barnard, Tygerberg, GrooteSchuur and Red Cross War Memorial Chil-dren’s Hospital.
Groote Schuur Hospital spokespersonAlaric Jacobs says the provincial healthdepartment has launched a targeted cam-paign to increase the number of potentialdonors.
“There are different factors that is re-sulting in the low organ donation rates inthe country,” he explains.
Six strategies will be adopted by govern-ment to push the numbers up.
The department will establish a singleorgan donor database, support existingprogrammes, improve accessibility of in-formation, increase opportunities for or-gan donation at hospitals. address infor-mation gaps about organdonation and sup-port families and clinicians.
Spreading awarenessOne person can donate one heart, two
lungs, one liver, two kidneys and one pan-creas, potentially saving seven lives, ex-plains Samantha Volschenk from the Or-gan Donor Foundation.
A lack of awareness and information isthe reason for the low donation rate, shecontinues.
“We are not government funded so ourresources are quite limited. We are forcedto rely heavily on volunteering networksto get our information out there,” she says.
Volschenk adds that the benefits of or-gan donation is it doesn’t cost a cent andthat you can have it on good consciencethat you have helped to save a life.V For more information on how to become an organdonor visit http://www.odf.org.za/ or call0800 22 66 11.

CRIME: CAUGHT NEAR N2
CablethievesnabbedThe quick and daring actions of the
City of Cape Town “Copperheads”team recently led to the arrest of three
cable thieves.Council employees working for the elec-tricity services department noticed threesuspicious-looking people digging andworking in a trench at the Athlone Waste-water Treatment Plant on the N2.The staff cornered the suspects fromthree directions, which resulted in theirarrest. They were caught with copper cables intheir possession.A spade, an axe, a hacksaw, a bread knifeand a rucksack were found on inspectionof the considerable trench that had beendug in order to remove the cables.Mayoral Committee member for UtilityServices Ernest Sonnenberg warns: “Wewill not tolerate the vandalismof our infra-structure. We will increase our efforts toclamp down on perpetrators of this costly, dangerous and illegal exercise. The mil-lions of rands that theCity spends on fixingdamaged electricity infrastructure causedby theft and vandalism impacts on our ef-forts to ensure the highest level of servicedelivery to our residents. This moneycould have been spent on additional serv-ice delivery. The level of theft and vandal-ism is simply disgraceful.”Council appeals to all to report any casesof theft or to provide informationonoffend-ers to the Copperheads on 0800 222 771.

Pukke outroar Ikey TigersLIAM MOSES
@LiamCPT
UCT’s Varsity Cup title ambitions weredented in a heavy loss to Pukke at theGreen Mile on Monday evening.
The Ikey Tigers were thrashed 47-24 infront of a packed crowd and have sunk to thebottom of the log as a result.
UCT have appeared in three finals andwon the tournament once since its inceptionin 2008.
They are usually considered serious titlecontenders.
But Monday’s performance will haveraised questions about their eligibility forthe VC crown, as they conceded seven triesand scored just three.
From the start whistle Pukke went on theoffensive, forcing UCT backwards. But it
was the home side who opened the scoring.UCT won possession inside their half,
broke into opposition territory and scoredthrough fullback Ross Jones-Davies, aftersome neat interplay involvingwing RichardStewart.
The Ikeys began to dominate possessionafter the try and were again most successfulon the counter.
Wing Liheli Xoli collected a lose ball andraced away down the left, but was forced tosend the ball back inside after being caughtby the Pukke cover defence.
Pukke looked to have rebuffed the coun-ter-attack, but the home side spread the ballright where flank Shaun McDonald took ad-vantage of the overlap and crossed over.
The momentum swung Pukke’s way afterthe try and, after simplifying their play andcutting down on errors, the visitors opened
their account when Juan Language crashedover at the back of a maul.
Pukke scored their second try two min-utes later, with elusive fullback SylvianMa-huza breaking from his own half and ghost-ing past several would-be tacklers to score.
The come back was completed in the finalminutes of the half, when Mahuza dancedround a defender in the 22, despite receivingthe ball flat-footed.
The respective goalkickers contributedtwo conversions each, and Pukke went intohalf-time leading 21-16.
UCT were the better starters again in thesecond half and scored their third try whenJones-Davies chippedover thedefence in the22 and regained possession to dot down.
The conversion from Dean Grant saw theIkeys claim a 24-21 lead, but it was downhillfrom there for the home side with a four-try
flurry from Pukke wrapping up the game.First lightening quick wing Luther Obi
burst down the left to score, then replace-ment forward Phillip de Wet crashed over, lock Francois Robberts barged into the goalarea and forward Daniel Jordaan came offthe bench to compete the rout.
Pukke captain and scrumhalf Tiaan Dor-fling converted just two of the second-halftries.
UCT would have hoped to seal a victoryin the opening game before taking on tradi-tional rivals and three-time tournamentwinners Maties in Stellenbosch on Monday.
However, they will be encouraged by theMaties shocking 45-29 loss to NelsonMande-la Metropolitan University in Port Eliza-beth.
Both Cape sides will be looking to setthings right on Monday.

WP women advanceto the playoffsLIAM MOSES
LiamCPT
The Western Province women’s cricketteam coach has demanded improve-ment from his side despite two crush-
ing victories last weekend.WP thrashed Eastern Province by 250
runs on Saturday and beat South WesternDistricts by 155 runs on Sunday, securinga spot in the semi-finals of theCricket SouthAfrica Women’s Provincial League.
But coach Cobus Roodt believes his sidecould have won both games by even biggermargins.
“We most probably performed at about75% of our ability. It wasn’t our top form,”he says.
“I believe we weren’t as clinical as wecould have been in the match against East-ern Province. We could have got to 320 plusruns and bowled them out for even less.”
WP posted 285/5 against EP and bowledthe visitors out for just 35 on Saturday. They scored 218 all out on Sunday, beforebowling out SWD for just 63.
On Sunday Roodt rested two of his front-line bowlers in preparation for the final ofthe tournament, whenbothplayers are like-ly to be away on national duty.
He says he expects the replacements to uptheir performances in the semi-final.
“They aremore or less there, but it’s a bigloss when you lose players to national du-ty,” he says.
“The main thing we need is slight im-provements in consistency in theareas theybowl. Your top bowlers will bowl six goodballs in an over, where as they maybe bowlfive in an over. That one ball starts to makea difference as the competition gets tough-er.”
He adds an improved bowling and field-ing performance, together with his team’salready excellent batting, will see WP in“good shape”.
The bonus point victories against EP andSWD, together with the seven other bonuspoint victories WP have recorded this sea-son, means WP top the West/East group ofthe tournament.
Depending onhowwell thewinners of theCentral and Highveld groups fair, Roodt’sside could well host the semi-final and thefinal, if they advance that far.
WP are the only team to have played allof their group stage matches and will havetowait for the other sides to catch up to findout their semi-final opposition.
“The worse part is that we have a monthoff before we start the semis,” Roodt says.
“It’s not an ideal situation as you wouldwant to keep themomentum going. Nowwehave to sit and wait until the semis onWednesday 5 March.”
