ATHLONE’S historic fishmon-gers have denied responsibility
for the state of the Vygekraal MuslimCemetery in Johnston Road, whichhas raised the ire of disgusted localsover the appalling condition of thefinal resting ground.
Fish intestines and faeces litter thegraveyard and a foul stench of urinehangs in the air, much to the dismay ofmourners who come from Athlone,Lansdowne, Manenberg and the sur-rounding areas to pay their respects.
Residents, like Moena Mustapha, are calling on the authorities to take im-mediate action. “It is terrible to see thatour loved ones’ final resting place hasbeen turned into this mess,” a disgust-ed Mustapha says. “We should respectthe place where they have been buried, but this is not the case. It reeks of fishand there are fish intestines all over. When I went there recently I noticed
that a part of the vibracrete wall had al-so been taken down so that the fish-mongers can get the water they needfrom the tap inside the cemetery. Va-grants are also using the grounds as atoilet.”
Mogamat Maged, a trustee on theVygekraal Muslim Cemetery Board, says that they are also fed up with themess. “It’s despicable what is happen-ing to the cemetery. The fishmongershave been trading here for years, butthey have no sanitation or water andmake use of the taps in the cemetery. This has become worse as they havenow broken the wall of the cemetery forquicker access. I have fixed the wall nu-merous times but when I return later,it’s smashed again.”
He says maintaining the cemetery is“a real battle” as the vagrants whosleep along the cemetery’s wall in Low-er Klipfontein Road throw rubbish on tothe graveyard. “I have spoken to theAthlone fishmongers and the vagrantsbut it falls on deaf ears. People think
the trustees are not doing their job, butthis is something we need to deal withon a hourly basis.”
Maged says an added problem is theflowers being stolen off the graves inthe middle of the night by drug addictsand re-sold the next morning.
But while the filth, dirt and smell havebeen blamed on the group of homelesspeople who are squatting on the otherside of the cemetery wall, finding theculprits responsible for the decompos-ing fish innards has proven quite a task.
Abdullah Mcleod, the president of theAthlone Fish Mongers Association, ve-hemently denies responsibility for thestate of the cemetery.
“We have been trading here for about30 years and we would never be thatdisrespectful. It is other fishmongersand people who come in the middle ofthe night and create a mess here – notus. The guys standing in KlipfonteinRoad do not throw the fish intestines onthe graves.” He says the fishmongersclean their fish at their trading area and
dispose of dirt in bins which are collect-ed by the council.
However, Magedcounters that be-fore the excess fish is collected bycouncil, birds “pick at it and scatter iton the graves”.
Councillor Magadien Davids saysthe issue will be addressed “immedi-ately”.
“We have received complaints fromresidents, and we are sorry for the in-convenience this has caused. We arestarting to build the AthloneFish Market next month whichshould alleviate the stench ofthe fish being sold. However,as for intestines being dumpedclose to the graveyard, it wasestablished that it is other fish-mongers doing that and not theones who stand at the ceme-tery.”
He says he is in talks withlaw enforcement to get the va-grants removed. “Vagrantsare sleeping under a tree close
to the cemetery, but we will be lookingat ways to get them removed andplaced into shelters permanently.”
Big stink over state of ceme-tery

Everyone looking to renew their spent CFLs for free
raise your hands!
www.eskom.co.za/idm
Five years ago, we managed to convertmillions of South Africans to using CFLenergy saving lightbulbs and saved youmoney. Now, five years later, we’reback to change your energy savers thathave reached the end of their life.Continue to use energy savers tocollectively save South Africa’s energy.
Energy saving lightbulbs have anenvironmental benefit because they cutyour lighting cost by using less electricityand last up to eight times longer, resulting in a reduction in greenhousegases. The small amount of mercury that
energy saving lightbulbs contain is almostused up by the time the lightbulb is readyfor disposal. So try not to break the
lamp and dispose of CFLs at participatingretailers.
Spent CFLs can be exchangedfor new ones in two ways:
a. There will be a door-to-door exchange(people will come to your door to dothe exchange).
b. Self exchange points will be set up incertain areas, where you will be ableto go and do the exchange.
Don’t miss out!Save energy and save money!
The exchange period will run from February 2012 to March 2012.

LOVING, passionate and a people’sperson – that is how ward 45 coun-cillor Faiza Adams will be remem-bered by those who knew her.
Adams (63) was admitted to hospitalfour weeks ago with lung failure. Shewas placed on life-support but died onTuesday.
She was buried at the VygekraalMuslim Cemetery in Johnston Roadand people from all walks of life gath-ered to pay tribute to a woman whoserved the communities of Manenberg,Gugulethu and Oliver Tambo Square
for many years.Councillor Adams also served on
Phoenix High School’s governing bodyand was involved in various local com-mittees.
Her husband, Gamat Adams, is stilldistraught a week after her death.
“It was traumatising to see the wom-an I loved for 43 years in so much pain.On her final day, she said to me: ‘Myhusband, I can’t take it anymore,’ andI told her it was okay, because she wasin God’s hands.”
He says she was passionate abouteverything she did.
“She was gold to me. She would helpeveryone she could and would never
complain about anything.“She was a good woman, wife, moth-
er and community worker. For all thoseyears it was a blessing to have her asmy wife – I couldn’t ask for anyone bet-ter.”
Gamat says he will miss her compa-ny terribly.
“We spoke for hours during the dayand before we went to sleep. I miss herdearly. She meant everything to me.”
Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lillecomments: “We have lost a selflesssoul who dedicated her life to servingher community with passion. Her dedi-cation to helping the less fortunatemembers of her constituency was a
symbol of compassionate leadershipunmatched by most community lead-ers.
“We will honour her legacy by contin-uing to work hard to build a more caringcity.”
. A by-election is expected to takeplace where representatives of all polit-ical parties will run to be elected thenew councillor of Ward 45. A date hasnot yet been announced.

BEWARE when strangers offer assistanceat ATMs as they could be out to clone
your bank card and withdraw your cash.
This happened to Lansdowne residentAdeelah Ederies when she withdrew money froman ATM at a garage between St John’s Road andChurch Street on Friday.
A well-dressed woman approached Ederies af-ter she had withdrawn her money and told herthat her transaction wasn’t complete.
She told Ederies to look at the screen whichread “a language should be selected”.
“I found that odd, as I had my money and bankcard. I asked the woman who she was and shetold me that the same thing had happened to herbefore and that she could assist me,” she says.
“The well-spoken woman told me to insert mybank card into the ATM and complete the transac-tion. Something didn’t feel right, but I was in arush as my children were waiting for me in thecar and I did as the woman said.”
Ederies placed her bank card into the ATM andthe woman pressed buttons, stating she knewhow to sort out the problem.
She told Ederies to insert her pin code, whichshe did.
“When she was done I took my bank card andwent to the car and drove off, but I felt uneasyand I told my family when I got home. Somethingtold me to take a photo of the woman, but I didn’t,”
says Ederies.“On Saturday I went out and when I wanted
to withdraw money, I was unable to do so as itstated that the withdrawal limit for the day hadbeen exceeded.”
She realised she had been conned and imme-diately went to the police station to report the mat-ter. After having bank statements printed, it wasestablished that the thieves had withdrawn a totalof R2 500 in Nyanga.
“We also wanted to view the video footage atthe petrol station but the cameras’ view doesn’treach to where the ATMs are situated,” says Ed-eries.
She warns people to safeguard themselvesagainst ATM scams and not to trust strangers astheir cards could also be cloned.
“People who commit such crimes know how toconvince innocent victims to get what they want.Always be on guard.”
Constable Nkululeko Mnyaka, Lansdowne po-lice spokesperson, says a case of theft is beinginvestigated and also urges residents to safe-guard themselves when they are withdrawingmoney from ATMs.
Anyone who has information on the wherea-bouts of the suspects is urged to contactLansdowne Police Station on (021) 700 9030.

CHAOS: The ANC memorial lecture held at the Good Hope Centre on Thursday in memoryof former ANC president Sefako Makgatho was marred by the arrest of two people for publicdisorder. It was initially alleged that the disruption, which occurred during President JacobZuma’s centenary speech, was by a duo from the ANC Youth League, but the group’s spokes-person, Floyd Shavambu, lays the blame squarely at the party’s doorstep. “The ANCYL isconcerned by the manner in which ANC members in the Western Cape disrupted the lecture,”he says. MAKE SURE your driving instructor has the neces-sary documentation authorising him to teach youthe rules of the road – and that he is charging youan acceptable fee.
Traffic officers will be conducting inspections ondriving schools and instructors to target dishonestbusinesses which offer K53 driver tuition withoutthe necessary accreditation.
All driving schools and instructors must have aninstructor’s certificate that verifies that the instruc-tor is competent in the instruction of K53 drivertraining.
Applicants who are trained by uncertified drivingschool instructors often fail their driving licencetests because of the inadequate level of trainingreceived, the municipal traffic department warns.
These businesses often charge exorbitant feesand by teaching the learner drivers incorrectly, con-tribute to endangering the lives of innocent roadusers.
Traffic Services enforcement teams will be inten-
sifying its focus on driving instructors, with a spe-cial emphasis placed on enforcement around theDriving License Testing Centres across CapeTown.
The department encourages all learner driversto use the services of reputable driving schools.
Driving schools and instructors must be in pos-session of a valid instructor’s certificate, a validdriving licence for the particular class of vehicleand a roadworthy vehicle.

SUMMER JACOBS
EXCITEMENT filled the air in Manenberg asone of its elders, Sadia Duncan (nee Ve-
lasco), celebrated her 80th birthday with a lav-ish party on Thursday.
A truly remarkable woman, this senior citizenepitomises strength and courage, having over-come more obstacles than most people face ina lifetime.
Better known as “Mamma”, the local can argu-
ably be described as invincible, having surviveda life threatening haemorrhage and the infamoustornado which hit Manenberg in 1999.
Born on 23 February 1935, Sadia was a middlechild of sixteen children and grew up in Kensing-ton. At 29 she married Cassiem Duncan and hadfive children.
Just before the new millennium, the family suf-fered a terrible loss when their house was de-stroyed by the tornado which swept throughManenberg.
In less than five minutes the twister destroyedtheir home of 30 years, shattering all the windowsand tearing off the roof.
The Duncan family had to relocate to a govern-ment house provided for victims just a few streetsaway from their demolished home.
But Duncan’s suffering did not end there, asa few months later she suffered a severe haemor-rhage which almost claimed her life. Aysha Bren-ner, Duncan’s eldest granddaughter, recalls:“The doctors told us that if she survived theplanned operation there was a chance she maybe blind or paralysed. They even warned us thatshe could end up in a permanent state of vegeta-tion. We were very worried because she alreadyhad an angina heart and had suffered more thanthree heart attacks,” said Brenner.
Yet Duncan, in true survival spirit, made a re-markable recovery with all her bodily functionsintact.
However, there was a change in her personali-ty as she stopped doing the things she enjoyeddoing before, such as cooking.
“After the operation we could not leave heralone at home because she was a danger to her-self. I remember one day she put a plastic bucketon the stove while it was still on,” says Brenner.
Another shattering blow came in 2002 whenafter 51 years of marriage, Duncan lost her hus-band to a stroke.
Fortunately the widow was not alone with 22grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren tokeep her busy.
Despite all the adversity this incredible womanhas faced, she smiles away as one grandchildafter the other showers her with birthday wishes.
“I grew up thinking Mamma was my mother, but during my teenage years I found out that shewas actually my grandmother. I wasn’t upset –I understood that my mother was too young totake care of me.
“I thank God that Mamma took me in and raisedme as one of her own children. It’s as a resultof her upbringing that I am the person I am today. She gave me a 21st, an engagement party anda huge wedding, and today I have been marriedfor 22 years.
“I felt that after so much adversity in her lifeshe needed some recognition and I wanted tofind a way to show her how grateful I am for allthe support she’s given me and the entire familythroughout the years. She’s definitely a force tobe reckoned with,” says Brenner, smiling proudly.
Duncan celebrated her 80th birthday at herhome where her family had a gaajad (Muslimprayer meeting) for her.
Thereafter the party kicked off and supper andsweet things were served.
Eighty cheers for SadiaEighty cheers for SadiaA NOTABLE LIFE:A NOTABLE LIFE: Sadia Duncan celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by loved ones. Withher is her oldest grandchild, Aysha Brennar. Photo: Summer Jacobs

AFTER an anxious five-month wait, 12lucky students gave the air an emphatic fistpump after being selected as beneficiariesof the Voice of the Cape Bursary Fund.
The task of narrowing down 90 names to alist of 12 was a tough task for the MuslimBroadcasting Corporation’s bursary panel, which was made up of people who are in goodstanding in the academic field.
The fortunate students’ names were recent-ly announced at a star-studded event hostedby Auric Auto BMW in Claremont.
Nijema Hayat, the convenor of the bursarypanel, says the selection was not an easy taskas each letter of motivation that accompaniedan application was more moving than the last.
The bursary fund was set up not only to offeropportunities for people within the VOC struc-ture, but also to encourage more students toenter the media and broadcast industry in or-der for VOC to always have human resourcesto continue their functioning.
Auric Auto’s dealer principle, Teddy Goven-der, says the company’s involvement was partof its corporate social investment initiative. “Itis important to support the youth as tertiary ed-ucation is extremely expensive. This makes ita little easier for them to concentrate on their
studies and get good grades.”Auric Auto kicked off the bursary fund by do-
nating R10 000 towards the initiative. This wasadded to the R100 000 from proceeds of theannual VOC Festival and donations from busi-nesses and individuals of about R20 000.

BUSINESSES are encouraged to make use ofstudents from further education and trainingcolleges seeking work placement to combatthe shortage of adequately qualified staff.
Thanks to the College of Cape Town, thesestudents can be tried out at no cost to compa-nies, while at the same time giving the employ-ee the opportunity to develop their skills for ashort period.
As work placement officers, the college’s as-signment is to place students who are regis-tered for their Vocational National Certificate,National Diploma and other college pro-grammes with employers for periods of work-place-based experience and in-service train-ing.
The college’s goal is to place students forbetween five and 10 consecutive days in eachyear of study for workplace-based experienceand 18 months for in-service training. Duringthese placements, employers are asked to ori-entate students to their companies and allowthem to work alongside employees doing jobsrelated to the students’ field of study.
For many young people, obtaining this kindof work experience has been life-transforming.They have developed a better understandingof their chosen career and how it is practisedin the workplace. This has motivated them towork harder and succeed. Many students haveforged relationships with employers that led toimmediate offers of employment after gradua-tion. Employers benefit, too as students are asource of future employees that you can getto know before hiring.
By hosting students, employers get achance to influence the training that the col-lege provides and slant it more towards theneeds of the industry.
Employers can also get points on their com-
pany’s BEE scorecard. Should a company bewilling to host two or more of its students, thecollege would gladly assist by facilitating theplacement process.
Workplace-based experience placement forthe Vocational National Certificate occurs dur-ing the April, June/July and September/Octo-ber vacations. In-service work placement forNational Diploma students are scheduled forNovember/December.
These experiential training sessions arealigned with the Department of Higher Educa-tion and Training’s requirements.
No financial contribution is expected fromthe host employer for workplace-based experi-ence.
However, a nominal stipend to studentscompleting their 18 months in-service trainingwould assist them in satisfying financial com-mitments incurred during the in-service train-ing period. The college hopes that more com-panies will join them in this important exercise.Companies are invited to contact the collegeto explore how placing its students can helpgrow their business and bottom line.
For more information on work placement atthe college, phone Winston Damons on (021)404 6700. The College of Cape Town also of-fers bursaries for registered students withsound academic results who are in need of fi-nancial assistance.
For more information on bursaries, contactthe college’s information line on 086 010 3682or email [email protected].

DRIVING a car should provide a smoothride that does not feel uneven or shaky. However, constant driving and potholescan seriously throw a car’s wheel align-ment out of line. This should prompt adriver to head over to a tyre shop forwheel rebalancing.
Tyres need to be rebalanced due to theweight of the wheel becoming distributedunevenly. Even small imbalances of only anounce of weight can cause a vehicle to vi-brate at speeds of over 120km/h. It is a gen-eral rule that all four tires on a automobileshould be rebalanced every 20 000km. An-other sign to watch out for is uneven treadpatterns on the tyre which indicates that thetyres are misaligned.
This is often not the case with most driv-ers. Despite the fact the wheels may appearto be balanced, only a wheel balancer ma-chine can discovereven the slightest dis-crepancies. Additional problems arise whena car’s tyres are not balanced correctly. Inaddition to tyre wear, a car’s suspensiongoes through extra stress due to the unbal-anced tyres. Steering components also suf-fer as does fuel consumption. Tyre tractionand steering control are also reduced whentyres need to be balanced. Ultimately, it is
important to rebalance a car’s tyres to pre-vent damage and ensure the safety of thoseriding within the vehicle. A standard wheelbalancing will require that a certified me-chanic removes the wheels and puts it ona balancer machine to spin. After spinning, the machine will determine the locationswhere the imbalances are located.
Wheel balancers are placed on the rimsto distribute the weight more evenly and putthe wheel into balance.
A final spin is done to make sure that thewheel is balanced with the wheel balancersin place. After this step, the wheels areplaced back on the vehicle, for a smoother, safer vehicle to drive.
Unbalanced wheels are a danger on theroad and for anyone who is driving on them.Wobbling wheels can cause a loss of drivercontrol that can lead to a more serious acci-dent.
Making the choice to rebalance tyres of-ten is a great decision that will impact thelife of the car’s tyres and the vehicle that theyare placed on. It cannot be stressed enoughthat wheel balancing plays a vital role inkeeping a vehicle in good shape. – AGSe-lectImports.com

THE annual Cape Town Bike Show waslaunched in December 2010 and has beena great success.
The aim is to put together an outdoor exhibitof motorcycles along with displays from motorcy-cle manufacturers and suppliers.
This will also provide a great opportunity for thebiking community to come together once againin aid of a charity as well as for members of thepublic to get up close and personal with thesebeautifully made machines.
Few people realise how much fundraising thebiking community does in the Western Cape.
Bikers represent every walk of life, from bank-ers and managing directors to local doctors andschool principals, yet popular media often mis-represents them.
Somewhat like the often misunderstood squat-ter camp inhabitants who are served by the de-serving charity behind this event.
This year’s event – on Sunday 4 March – isbeing planned as an annual fundraising vehiclefor Living Way – a part of Living Hope – whichis strategically positioned adjacent toMasiphumelele Township on Kommetjie Roadand is also within walking distance of OceanView, two of their primary catchment areas.
They work to provide opportunities for people
to earn their way out of poverty, including prepar-ing people for the world of work and developingentrepreneurs to make their dreams a reality.
Living Way is working to enable the under-re-sourced to meet the market’s employmentneeds. There will also be stalls offering a varietyof motorcycle related items.
Alongside bikes and related items, there willbe food and beverage stalls and a jumping castleand play area for the kids.
Join them on Sunday 4 March at the new ven-ue, the Living Hope Campus (on KommetjieRoad).
Gates will be open to the public between 10:00and 16:00.
There is parking for motorcycles inside thevenue and for vehicles in the surrounding area, monitored by security for peace of mind. Entryis R35 per person, including a metal badge, whilechildren aged three to 12 pay R5. For more infor-mation visit www.livingway.co.za or to book a stallor exhibit contact Jo Huysamen 082 518 3932 [email protected].

WHEN you talk about hot hatches, there was atime when Volkswagen’s Golf was considered abenchmark amongst its peers, notably the Mk1,2 and 3 models. Somehow, Mk5 was good butits peers, the Ford Focus ST and Renault Meg-ane R26 were brilliant and stole the show on cer-tain key aspects that define a true hot hatch.
Then there was the introduction of the Mk3 Po-lo GTI to the South African market, but Opel’sCorsa OPC and Ford’s Fiesta ST were far toosuperior.
THE ENGINEThe Mk5 Polo GTI is powered by VW’s award-
winning 132 kW 1.4 TSI engine that uses botha supercharger and turbocharger to power it up.Not only does the Polo embarrass the Golf 5.1on accelerating from 0-100 in 6.9 sec, but it hasnow established itself as a true hot hatch.
THE INTERIORThe interior is defined by quality finishes all
around accompanied by red stitches. The drivingposition is the same as the Golf. The suede leath-er seats are comfy and have a heating function.
CONSUMPTION
I managed about 5.9 litres per 100km, whichis not bad for a rocket. This car epitomise whata car should be: it has speed, is fuel efficient andis classy. In fact, the Polo is perfect for everydaydriving due to it being economical, especiallywhen petrol costs are so high these days.
THE DISAPPOINTMENTIt is hard to find fault with this car. It’s so brilliant
in most key aspects that I actually had to get outof the car and notice those rims – VW could havedone much better job.
It doesn’t come cheap, though. At R260 000,a service plan is excluded and you are lookingat between R10 000 and R13 000 for a serviceor maintenance plan.
All-in-all, this is a brilliant car that blows awaythe competition and has all the ingredients for be-ing a future classic car. It will be interesting tosee what the competition have in store to chal-lenge this maniac. I am a man of few words andI can only let this car do the talking on the road.– Wheels 24

In 2007 the City of Cape Town commenced a public process for the naming and renaming of streets, buildings and public places. Proposals were received from the public and were then assessed by a Panel of Experts. After consideration, the Panel of Experts recommended 31 naming proposals be approved and implemented by Council. Council suspended the process for the purposes of further public consultation on the recommendations. In the past few months the City has implemented four name changes. YourSMSesDad to sue after failed vasectomy
. When your wife found out she was expectingyou were suppose to encourage her to terminatethe pregnancy. We should know that sterilizationis not 100% safe. Love your miracle baby like youlove the other 10. After all these years, praiseGod for her life and the joy she will bring into yourlives. Be blessed. Norma
. Raymond Jacobs, count your blessings. Thatlittle angel is a gift from the Almighty. No doctoror operation can be blamed for what the Almightyhas planned for you. Love, care and protect thatgift. You are so blessed – don’t waste your energyto fight. Rather spend it on your beautiful miracle.
. I hear what Raymond is saying. I would liketo adopt the little baby from Mr Jacobs. My wifeand I are willing to take over the responsibilitiesbecause we can’t have a child of our own. Nasief
. Raymond Jacobs, long time ago the Lord or-dained that you will be the father of 11 children. No vasectomy will stop His will. Thank the Lord– don’t sue the state.
. Clearly you put your trust in the health depart-ment and not in God. Don’t you believe that eve-rything is in God’s hands? So why you do youwant to sue the government?
Local thoughts. Mario Wanza is more involved with land grabs
than cleaning. Dirt dumped at the sub station inUsk Road has been lying there for a month. Ed-die, Manenberg
. I would like people to know about the guysselling heavy duty plastic bags at the traffic lightson the corner of Oliver Tambo Drive. I just boughta bag of 50 for R20. When I got home there wereonly 14 in the bag!
. Those young boys who raped the girl mustgo to jail. If such a small mind can do somethinglike that, they will grow up to be even worse. Haveno mercy on these kids.
You are what you eat. To Atheist: unless you change, you’re on your
way to a burning hell, pork and all.. Othmaan, the scripture you refer to is under
the law of God. Jesus said: “I came not to changethe law but to free you from the law”, meaningwe are under His grace. He also says, anythingthat you buy in a butcher “you may eat if you prayabout it in my name” and “what I have made cleandon’t you make unclean”. We as followers of Je-sus believe He is God manifested in flesh. ReadJohn chapter one. We don’t live under the lawbut under grace. WJ
. God provided us with an abundance of freshfruit and vegetables. It is healthier than the ob-session with meat, halaal or not. In fact, scientistsbelieve that with all these diseases hitting ourplanet, man is exposed to a variety of illnessesthrough the consumption of meat. Hawkers arevirtually begging us to buy their cheap fruit andvegetables. It is more freely available than un-healthy meats! Viva vegans! Correct me if I’mwrong, but I think vegetarians are sensible peo-ple and healthier too! Lewis, Lansdowne
. We live in a country filled with diversity andyet we refuse to accept each other. We havemany different beliefs and religions, so whetheryou eat pork or not is no-one’s business. Whomade you the judge? Why don’t you practice yourreligion and keep your nose out of other religions.Only God can be our judge.
. Eat pork! “Do not let anyone judge you bywhat you eat or drink; or with regard to a religiousfestival...” (Colossians 2:16).
. Seems to me you are just ignorant and indoubt owing to all the different opinions aboutyour Bible. It just shows that it was written byman. Wake up and believe in one God. Shakes
. Please people, it’s not a Muslim and Christian
fight. Take the fight to Orion and the MJC.. It seems the Bible is contradicting itself by al-
lowing pork to be eaten and also prohibiting it.Is the Bible really God’s word?
Just a thought. I am an unemployed mother of two and I am
upset, because these days you are hired by insti-tutions dependant on the way you pay your bills, not by your skills and knowledge. The economyis going to suffer greatly because young produc-tive people are sitting at home.
. My husband and I are ardent sport fans andare especially interested in rugby and cricket. Weare both retired and we will be looking forwardto reading Liam Moses’ sport columns regularly. We also want to wish Liam a happy and long staywith People’s Post. Good luck! Maz
. The ANC is set on changing names but thiswill not change history. It will only take moneyaway from the housing projects and the poor. MrsDavids
. Why do we pay R9 for a loaf of bread? Ithought the government is regulating the prices/Or are they regulating their salaries?
. Budget speech – what a joke! Look at thefraud and corruption in the ANC provinces. Areyou making up for all the Apartheid years? I’min the wrong profession.
. My sympathy goes out to teachers who worklong hours, experience annual policy changes, have a bigger workload and whose job descrip-tion has changed to nurse and social worker. Didyour salary increase?
. The government is changing road names andwant input via Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp.Watch out Constantia and Simon’s Town: You willsoon be called Zuma Town, Malema Park orMbeki Suburb! They are starting with VanguardDrive. Send your opinion.
By the way. The reason shops worldwide use prices end-
ing in 99c is a simple marketing ploy. Think aboutit next time you see it’s only R19 when in factit’s closer to R20. Josh
. If you know Mrs Peggy Juliet Booysen fromDelft, please tell her I picked up her ID and bankcard in Clicks. To collect, please provide me with
Residents have thepowerDO YOU turn a blind eye to sneaky-looking peo-ple eyeing the local electricity infrastructure?Start taking a special interest as damage toelectrical infrastructure will have a negative ef-fect on you and your neighbourhood.
Unnecessary damage caused to the electricitynetwork, street kiosks, distribution boxes and otherelectrical equipment as a result of cable theft andwilful damage causes a disruption of electricitywhile also creating potentially dangerous situa-tions, especially for children.
The cost to repair this damage, and the resultantloss of income, means that there is less fundingavailable for new electrical infrastructure, the Cityof Cape Town’s electricity department warns.
Theft of cables from live networks, besides be-ing life-threatening to the perpetrator, can causeelectrical surges on the network which could dam-age the appliances of other electricity consumers.
The City, generally, does not entertain claims in
such cases, as it is not responsible for these sys-tem surges. Tampering with meters is an offencein terms of the Electricity Supply By-law and thosecaught having tampered or bypassed the City’smeters will have to pay for all the costs incurredto reinstate the meter to an operational state. Theperpetrators will be required to pay to have theirmeter moved to a new location, and the City willalso recover lost income.
Report all instances of vandalism where tamper-ing with meters is suspected by sending an SMSto 31220 and provide details of the incident. Blowthe whistle on cable or equipment theft by phoning0800 222 771.

Lace up for annu-al 10km Big WalkSUMMER JACOBS
IT’S THAT time of the year when Capetonianslace up for the annual 10km Big Walk.
Regarded as one of Cape Town’s biggest familyevents, the walk will take place on Sunday 4March outside Cape Town Stadium.
The Big Walk has approximately 20 000 en-trants annually, the largest capacity manageablewithin the Sea Point area.
Starting at the stadium in Green Point, partici-pants walk along Beach Road and back. Partici-pants are encouraged to bring along family andfriends to give it a community feel. “People of allages can enter. We’ve had a baby of just undera month entered into the walk and the mother at-tached the entry number to the pram,” said mediaand communication liaison officer MahmoodSanglay.
Prizes up for grabs include an overseas trip, afull college training course, laptop, TV, walkingshoes and much more. However, as the walk isfamily orientated, organisers try to prevent com-petitiveness. Thus, a lucky draw is held in whichall entrants can participate.
The entry fee is R20. To enter online visitwww.topevents.co.za

AJAX were made to rue their missed chanc-es in the Cape derby on Saturday night
when local rivals Santos fought back from aone goal deficit to draw the match at the CapeTown stadium.
Those who did not see the game could be for-given for marking it down as another dreary stale-mate.
But in reality the match was a lively affair fromthe kick-off, and the result was not worthy of theentertaining game that took place.
Ajax took control of the encounter from the veryfirst minute – monopolising possession and camp-ing in Santos’ territory – and they took a deservedlead in the nineteenth minute after George Malule-ka was fouled in the box.
Brent Carelse, who led the line for Ajax on Sat-urday night, stepped up and converted the spotkick easily, but the veteran attacker’s composureseemed to desert him in the rest of the match andhe was guilty of missing several clear-cut opportu-nities.
Several other Ajax players also fluffed goalscoring opportunities and the match could havebeen killed off on several occasions in the firststanza if the Urban Warriors brought their shoot-ing boots along.
Ajax Coach Maarten Stekelenberg saw the poorshooting as the only flaw in an otherwise polished
display by his players.“I’m quite happy with the performance of the
team, because Ajax did very good. We createda lot.
“The only thing I think we can blame ourselvesfor is that we didn’t finish the clear opportunitiesthat we created,” said Maarten Stekelenberg.
“I think we could have finished the game in thefirst half and played the game home in the secondhalf.”
In the first half Santos seemed powerless tostop the constant flow of Ajax attacks, and theywere guilty playing too directly and conceding pos-session far too easily.”
However, Duncan Crowie’s team returned fromthe half-time break a completely different side andthey leveled the score less than 14 minutes later, after winning a free kick in a relatively innocuousarea of Ajax’s half.
The ball was floated into the penalty area andLanky striker Eleazar Rodgers rose highest tohead past a helpless Sander Westerveld, into theleft corner of the goal.
Neither team created any further chances in firsthalf and the score line remained deadlocked untilthe final whistle.
Apart from Ajax’s poor finishing, the other majortalking point in the match was the decidedly schiz-ophrenic performance of Santos.
Santos Coach Duncan Crowie blamed the poorfirst half performance on nervousness from hisplayers.
“When we came out in the second half and westarted playing the ball around I think we gainedterritorial advantage and we always put the Ajaxgoal under threat and that is probably why wescored,” said Crowie.
“The disappointment of the first half I think I canput that down to the players being too tense. Inthe second half they relaxed a little bit more andI think that is where we want to start our nextgame.”
Crowie added that a change of tactics in thesecond half also helped his side to gain a footholdin the game.
Ajax will face Amazulu in Kwa-Zulu Natal in theirnext game on Saturday 11 March in the NedbankCup, while Santos will face the University of Preto-ria on Wednesday 7 March at Athlone Stadium inthe same competition.
