Erecting a fence along the bridge at the Ashford soc-cer field may be the solution to stop people fromdrinking there.
Allan Thompson, chairperson of the club, says theydo not want to hold the City of Cape Town responsiblefor spectators’ behaviour, but are willing to meet themunicipality half-way in securing the bridge.“Wedonothavean issuewithpeople stopping to enjoythe games, but thedrinking, alongwith littering, iswhatbothers us. The club is then associated with this behav-iour,” he says.Thompson says drinking and littering only occur dur-ing home games when the bridge is usually packed fullof spectators.“At every gamewe play there are people sitting at thetop of the bridge drinking and then we get complaintsfrom the residents who live close by,” he says.Despite a sign indicating that no alcohol may be con-sumed beyond a certain point, People’s Post witnessedpeople drinking at the top of the bridge last weekend.Ward councillor Kevin Southgate says it is illegal forpeople to be drinking along the bridge – in a public space– and it is especially worrying that it is done in the pres-ence of children.“It is about educating people and letting them knowthat there are rules that need to be adhered to when inpublic,” he says. However, he doesn’t agree with Thompson wantingto meet the City half-way in erecting a fence. Southgatesays: “This may not be the solution, but can certainlybe looked at.”“There are certain steps which can be taken to ensurethat this does not occur, but it must be strictly moni-tored by the club and law enforcement,” he says.Thompson says the club has to pay someone to cleanthe litter on a Monday after a weekend game.“We are spending money unnecessarily and ask thatpeople not sit and drink on the bridge.“This is a family-friendly facility andwewant to keepit that way, but we do encourage people to support theclub and the players when there are games here,” hesays.

The draft concept development frame-work for the Greater Princess Vlei areahas been completed.Bridget Pitt, secretary of the Princess
Vlei Forum, says they are pleased thatthe City of Cape Town has completed theframework and will hold an open day sothat the public can view the plan andcomment on it.“This follows the successful campaign
waged under the umbrella of the Prin-cess Vlei Forum to prevent the buildingof a shopping mall on the banks of Prin-cess Vlei,” Pitt says. The open day will be held at the Re-
treat civic centre onThursday from16:00to 20:00. Pitt says the plans will be pre-sented, and City officials will be availa-ble to answer questions and record re-sponses.The open day will be followed by a Fo-
rum general meeting to discuss the planin depth at the League of Friends of theBlind hall (corner of Klip and First roadsin Grassy Park) on 27 August from 18:00to 21:00.
Pitt says the concept developmentframework describes the overall visionfor the development of the Greater Prin-cess Vlei area into a recreation site.“The Princess Vlei Forum has been
motivated by two important objectives.First, to ensure that Princess Vlei is de-veloped and protected as a site celebrat-ing nature and heritage for all to enjoy;and second, to ensure that this transfor-mation occurs with meaningful commu-nity engagement and consultation,” Pittsays. She adds that the release of these draft
plans is an important victory for theircampaign, showing that the City has lis-tened to the community and taken theseviews into account.“We also welcome the opportunity to
enable the community to comment onthe plans, and to take forward the visionfor Princess Vlei,” she says. And the Forum encourages all those
with an interest in Princess Vlei to at-tend these events, and make their viewsknown.

“We don’t strive to create champions,we strive to create an environment
where champions are inevitable.”This is the motto that members of St Au-
gustine Cricket Club live by.Despite being hit hard by vandals and
thieves, twice in one week, the membersmastered a plan to get the club restored.Their clubhouse was broken into and all
the cables, wires and taps stolen.George Damon, chairperson of the Crick-
et Club’s management, says the break-inwas the first of its kind. The clubhouse isat risk because there is no security.“From the time the security was removed
it has put the club at risk of being vandal-ised and stripped,” he says. However, the Club has now hired its own
security to ensure this crime is not repeatedonce themembershave completed the resto-ration.“The clubmembers are committed to this
facility and what it stands for. One can seethat by them giving up their personal timeto come and help us repair what was bro-ken. It shows that they are committed toprotect the club,” Damon says.
Past problemsRobin Poggenpoel, Club chairperson,
says the clubhouse had been vandalisedmuch worse in the past. The City of CapeTown had assisted in repairing the damage.“We are grateful that the City has helped
us to repair thedamage, butwewould reallyappreciate it if they could provide us withsecurity on the premises,” he says.Poggenpoel says they have had to rein-
force the front gate once again. The wallsoutside need to be fixed or replaced and allthe wiring and cables need to be replaced.Dudley Williams, facility manager of the
clubhouse, says due to the vandalism theclubhouse is under threat.“We have been physically compromised,
butmentally our ethos is intact.Wewill notallow this crime to break us,” he says.Ward councillor Kevin Southgate has
commended the club members for comingtogether and taking back what is theirswithout question.“It is always great to see people take re-
sponsibility and give back to their commu-nity. This club has been around for many, many years and serves people of all demo-graphics and I am sure they want it to con-tinue this way,” he says.Southgate says the clubhouse is in need
of repairs. Despite the vandalism it needsto be upgraded as the facility hosts interna-tional and local teams during tournaments.“If we want to see these facilities last a
lifetime we need to invest in it, but we asthe City cannot do this alone – we need thecommitment from the club members too,”he says.If anyone would like to donate something
for the clubhouse, be it furniture, lights or
bathroom fittings, or if you have any skillwhich you think can assist the club visitwww.staugustinecricketclub.co.za.

Keep a hawk eyeon your cardPolice have cautioned residents to be
wary of criminals using skimming devi-ces to conduct fraud. To raise awareness against falling victim
to fraud, residents have been encouraged tobecome familiar with information on skim-ming devices.Grassy Park police spokesperson War-
rant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says crimi-nals increasingly make use of magneticstrip card readers, also known as skimmingdevices ormagnetic swipe readers, to dupli-cate credit and debit cards.A skimming device is a type of card read-
er which records the data encoded on theback of a card (on the magnetic strip) whena card is swiped through it. The data is usedto duplicate the card and to steal the fundsin the account of the card holder.
Skimming“Skimming can occur when an unsus-
pecting card holder swipes their cardthrough an illegal skimming device at-tached to an ATM or when another personwho, for instance, is working at a retailer, restaurant, hotel or who is impersonatinga bank official, illegally swipes the cardthrough a hand-held card reader,” Klein-smith explains.Criminals download the data recorded
from the card onto a computer to manufac-
ture a fraudulent duplicate card or cards.“Skimming of the card can therefore oc-
cur when a card holder is still in possessionof their card or when another person ishanded the card to facilitate a transaction.”Kleinsmith adds that in South Africa
criminals mainly use two methods of skim-ming: A hand-held skimming device andhigh-tech ATM devices.“The hand-held skimming devices are
small and operated by hand. The criminalneeds to acquire a card and would thenswipe it through the device by hand,” sheexplains.“With thehigh-techATMdevices theyare
speciallymoulded tobe attached to anATM,often in conjunction with other recordingdevices such as spy cameras or keypadoverlays aimed at recording PIN numbers. The card is not held by the criminal at all.“These devices are oftenmodified to such
an extent that it is difficult to distinguishbetween an ATM that has a skimming de-vice attached to it and one that has not beentampered with,” Kleinsmith says.Residents are encouraged to remain vigi-
lant when using their cards. If it is suspect-ed that your card has been duplicated oryour account details have been shared, callyour bank immediately to stop the card andreport the incident to police.
Residents are cautioned to be wary of ATMskimming devices which could lead to theftfrom your bank account.
A police member demonstrates how ahandheld skimming device works to recordyour bank card’s details so that it can beduplicated by a thief.

“Act like a lady.”It’s a refrain every woman has heard at least once in
her life.So often uttered by our mothers, grandmothers and
many patriarchs, the outdated refrain has done nothingbut add unrealistic expectations onto women’s roles.Recently, social media outcry was sparked by a Wom-
en’s Day advert by Bic, which called on women to “looklike a girl, act like a lady, think like a man and work likea boss”.Women are told to think a certain way, to look a certain
way and, most importantly, to behave a certain way.All while holding down jobs, running homes and caring
for families. They are expected to look young and fit, showing no signs of the children they have given birthto or the tragedy they may have experienced. There is nospace for wrinkles, whether from frowning or smiling.Women have to talk a certain way and dress a certain
way. It’s an expression that tells women to behave within
limitations. It tells women to pretend to be somethingtheymaynot be. It forceswomen to sacrifice their unique-ness to fit into a preconceived mould. And often, to be these things, women must metaphori-
cally chop off parts of themselves to fit the cast.Loud, passionate, determined, expressive, protective
women are forced to act demurely and submissively. It is past the time we start to move away from imposing
outdated rules on howwomen look and behave. Shouldn’twe honour strength and individuality in our women, rather than asking them to conform? Those strong, passionate women are the ones who
shape the world – surely we should be encouraging ourgirls to grow in that direction?Forget being a lady.Being yourself will do you more favours.
Brass Bell cares for patronsAfter a wonderful lunch on Saturdaywith family and friends, we left theBrass Bell in great spirits. To mysurprise I received a call 10 minuteslater to say they had found my wallet.Unfortunately for me, all the cash wasgone. Since I had paid the bill on mycard after receiving cash from the restmy party, it was a significant amount. In the current economic environment,
I just assumed it was gone forever. Atleast all my cards, licences and otherinformation were still there.Without any further contact from
myself the Brass Bell management tookit upon themselves to review the camerarecordings. To my amazement I receiveda call today to say that they had solvedthe mystery and that I could collect themissing cash. Every cent was there. There are still good people out there
who care and go the extra mile to helpothers.Thank you Jean and the Brass Bell
staff and management. Customers reallydo come first.

Tackle cable theft from the other angleWe continually hear about cable theftand how it is debilitating everythingaround us and costing us all a fortune inlost time, lost contracts, lost wages andthe cost of repairs.I realise that to patrol or police every
cable installation is impossible, but whycan we not attack it from the other end?Where is all this stolen copper beingsold and to whom? There must behundreds of thieves but there cannot be
that many buyers or processors. Why can we not close down the
trading in copper by scrap dealers? Iknow they will bleat that it is theirlivelihood, but it is mostly illegal, soclose it! Where are the yards selling itlocally or exporting it? Close down theexport of copper, shut the door!Is this is possible, and if not, why not?

Ecigarettes shouldn’t be marketedThe billboard on the N1 with the mes-sage “E-cigarettes save lives” is highlymisleading because it can help to savethe lives of existing tobacco smokers. This message can be easily misinter-
preted by our highly daring and adven-turous youth that e-cigarettes are safe.I do not agree with the advertisers
that nicotine is a way of calming thenerves. It is the withdrawal of nicotinefrom the body that makes smokers feelirritable and restless and sets up thecraving for another cigarette. It is not only the nicotine that calms
smokers, it is also the effect of the handmoving the cigarette up and down, which diverts the mind and offerstemporary relief to the user from astressful situation.
Flavours are another gimmick toattract people to take to it. Whilste-smokers might enjoy the flavours,non-smokers might just find a theatrefull of a wide range of aromas irritating. If the intention is to deliver nicotine, then where is the need for flavours?Nicotine should not be allowed to be
deemed safe because the chemicalnicotine is highly addictive and is agateway drug to harder drugs. Finally, we should prevent the liberal
advertising of e-cigarettes before we landup in a situation where lobbyists fore-cigarettes become so powerful that itbecomes impossible to stop them – likewe are currently finding with theadvertisers of alcohol.

BabooncapersOn Women’s Day public holiday friendsinvited me to join them on an outing toCape Point nature reserve. There aresigns every few hundred metres warningvisitors to not feed baboons. We threeCapetonians read the signs casually aswe were well-aware of baboon capers, having lived here for many years. Wesaw troops of baboons and enjoyed theantics as babies chased each otherthrough the bush and over the road. The troop moved off and we stopped
for lunch. As if summoned by a dinnergong, a teenage baboon broke away fromthe troop and loped towards us. Hemoved amazingly fast and although aparks board employee shouted at us toclose the doors, Aap se Kind outfoxed usall and leapt into the car. He snatched anegg roll while we swore, shouted andgesticulated. He left and moved off down a bank
with his (and our) lunch. We thought that was it. No sign of
baboon. The driver opened his door toget rid of the leftover egg and bread roll, and suddenly there was Baboon again –as swift and graceful as a surfer negotiat-ing a wave.More cursing, shouts and gesticulating.
A visitor saw our dilemma and ran upwaving a rod. Baboon loped off for thesecond time.We gratefully got back in the car and
immediately noticed the pong. Baboonhad lost control of his bowels in all thedrama and done a number two on thepassenger seat.Fortunately my friends live at Scarbo-
rough and after a shower and the loan ofclean clothes we could laugh.Lesson learned: Never underestimate a
baboon’s intelligence or ingenuity andnever think you can get back into the carin time if one starts moving towards youand you have been unwise enough to getout of it.

Established as the highest profile roadrunning race on the continent, the San-lam Cape Town Marathon aims to im-
pact the economy this year by again boost-ing various sectors in the local community. The 42km race was relaunched last year
with a new headline sponsor and a vision ofmaking a valuable contribution as a world-class sports event. Achieving immediatesuccess, the race was recognised by globalgoverning body the International Associa-tion of Athletics Federations (IAAF).Having set a goal of being included among
the world’s most prestigious road races, thisyear’s eventwas recently awarded silver sta-tus by the IAAF, the onlymarathon inAfricato achieve this status.“Our goal now is to achieve IAAF gold sta-
tus,” says Janet Welham, race director forthe Cape Town Marathon.“Ultimately, we want to be considered
among thebest 42kmraces in theworld. Thisevent is more than just a road race; we wantto be able to leverage off it in order to mean-ingfully promote and change, to contributetowards the economy and make an impacton society. We have taken giant strides, itis only our second year and we can alreadysee how much difference it has made.”
As much and moreThe marathon’s executive committee
hopes to offer as much of a contribution tothe Western Cape across various sectors asother marathon and ultra-marathon racesaround the country have achieved.Races that have created a model with this
approach, boasting entries of between 5 000and 23 000 runners, include:. Soweto Marathon. Gauteng Marathon. Durban City Marathon. Comrades Marathon. Loskop Marathon. Om die Dam MarathonIn the Western Cape, existing events in a
number of different sports have also estab-lished themselves as world-class festivals:. Cape Epic bike race (1 200 participants). Cape Town Cycle Tour (35 000). Two Oceans Marathon (28 000)The success of these events, whichall have
entry limits for logistical and safety reasons, hinges on attracting local and foreign inter-est. This, in turn, creates a spin-off effect byboosting multiple sectors, including tour-ism and transport.“We believe we can add to and support
what has already been achieved by existingevents in order to provide real support to lo-cal communities,” Welham says.“Studies have shown sport and recreation
can be used as a vehicle to provide a signifi-cant financial boost. We are confident wewill continue to achieve this goal as the race
expands.”Research presented at last year’s inaugu-
ralCapeTownPeaceConference, held on thesidelines of the Cape Town Marathon, showed major opportunities existed to posi-tion sport and recreation as a sector with acomparative advantage in economicgrowth. The research also showed the potential to in-crease employment and social development.“The actual impact of sport and recreation
is largely unknown and vastly underesti-mated,” the findings stated. However, a 2011 recreation study by the
City of Cape Town found the participationrate of adults in the city in sport and recrea-tion was 27%, and participation trends wererelatively low compared to other provinces.Despite the low rate of activity, the contribu-tion of sport and recreation to the WesternCape economy was estimated at R8bn peryear. This showed the tremendous potentialof high-profile, mass participation sportsevents.
Sport touristSport and recreation could also be directly
linked to tourism trends, the Peace Confer-ence found, with a large number of peoplevisiting theprovinceandother areas aroundthe country as sport tourists.South Africa has previously hosted nu-
merous successful major internationalevents:. Rugby World Cup, 1995 (1.1m tickets soldfor live matches).AllAfricaGames, 1999 (25 000 foreign spec-tators, athletes and officials). Cricket World Cup, 2003 (627 000 ticketssold). Fifa Soccer World Cup, 2010 (3.1m ticketssold)All these events attracted fans andvisitors
fromaround the globe, and their success cre-ated a springboard for annual local festivalshoping to create similar interest. While these events attract more visitors
than annual road races, it would be a once-off competition, whereas annual events suchas the Cape TownMarathon have the poten-tial tomake a regular economic impact. Lastyear’s race attracted over R22m in advertis-ing value alone in the four-month build-upto the raceandraisedoverR350 000 for chari-ty.Yegs Ramiah, chief executive of Sanlam
Brand, says: “The potential impact of host-ingAfrica’s only IAAF-accreditedmarathonis undeniable. Besides providing a uniqueexperience to runners from all over theworld, the event will boost city tourism andhas the potential of putting Cape Town,SouthAfrica and our continent on the globalstage.”The second annual Cape Town Marathon
will be held on Sunday 20 September.

At 17 already a hockey starBEN BURGER
17-year-old Che February is thePeople’s Post Let’s Play SportStar of the month for July.Che lives, eats and sleeps hock-
ey. His greatest dream is to playprofessional club hockey in Eu-rope or Australia and to representSouth Africa at the Olympicgames.“I would like to start playing
hockey full-time, professionally ifpossible, even if that means stay-ing in Europe to do so and comingback toSouthAfricaduring theEu-ropean hockey league off-season,”he says.Che, who attendsWynberg Boys’
High School, started playing hock-ey in Grade 4 at Somerset House inSomerset West when he was 10years old.In 2011 Che was selected to cap-
tain his school’s u.13A hockey sideand he was selected for the West-ern Province u.13A hockey team.In 2012 he was selected for the PaulRoos Gymnasium u.14A hockeyteam and the Boland u.14A Pinot-age hockey team.Che moved to Wynberg Boys’
High to start Grade 9 in 2013. Herehe was selected for the school’su.16A hockey team and the West-ern Province u.16A interprovin-cial tournament hockey team. Theteam won gold in Johannesburg.Last year Che was selected for
the school’s first team and againfor the WP u.16A interprovincialtournament team.At this hockey tournament in
Durban the team won gold again.Che was the top goal scorer andvoted best striker. He was also selected for the
South African u.16A hockey team.At the pro series indoor national
tournament last year Che was se-
lected for the SA u.17 indoor hock-ey team.Che still plays for his school’s
first teamandalsoplays for the sec-ond team of WP Cricket Club’shockey club.He was on the WP u.18A inter-
provincial tournament team thatplayed inBloemfontein earlier thisyear. There he was selected for theSA u.18A team.
Che says he chose hockey be-cause he fell in love with the fastpace and adrenaline when he firstplayed it as a 10-year-old.According to him it takes hard
work and dedication if you want tobe good at hockey. He adds that itis difficult to balance academicsand training.“This year I am fortunate
enough to be coached by one of the
best hockey coaches in South Afri-ca, Paul Revington. All our train-ing sessions are high performanceand the training sessions are in-tense.“At school we train every day of
theweek, except for aTuesday, andthen I also train twice a week fortwo hours each after school at theWPCC hockey club.“It is difficult to balance hockey
training and academics. Because Idon’t have much time at home toput in the hours for studying I trymy best to listen during lessons atschool. I try to understand asmuchof the work as possible from thevery beginning in class, so when itcomes to exam time I revise a lotinstead of restudying my work. Inthisway I usemost ofmy time afterschool for hockey training.”He says it is also important to
live your passion, dream big andenjoy your sport.“In my case, goals are very im-
portant. The only way you can de-termine if you are moving in theright direction is by setting goals. The goals will help you when thetraining gets seriously tough andthe games become challenging.”V If you want to nominate a sport star be-tween the ages of 13 and 18, [email protected]. Write SportsStar as the subject. Mention the achieve-ments of the nominee in detail. The emailshould be shorter than 300 words. The de-cision of the judges is final.
