Peoria Academy of Science

Our MissionTo foster the appreciation of science,

to spread scientific knowledge and to promote scientific research.

The Peoria Academy of Science was founded in 1930 by a group of Peoria professional and amateur scientists who wanted to host

meetings of the Illinois State Academy of Science. The group hosted the state conference the next year.

The concept of a federation of science groups was so successful that within the state it became known as the Peoria Plan.

It was copied in many other communities and serveral colleges and universities. Today, the only two remaining in Illinois are the

Chicago Academy of Science and the Peoria Academy of Science.

The current sections of the Peoria Academy of Science include:Peoria Astronomical Society

Peoria Audubon Society • Peoria Botany SocietyEntomology Section • Geology Section

Central Illinois Herpetology Society

The Academy has approximately 600 members within these various disciplines.

The Academy has three major projects: The Donald Jackson Memorial Scholarship Fund,

The Science Granting Fund, and The Science Treasure Hunt for Children.

About Springdale Cemetery Savanna

This is a rare remnant of tallgrass oak savanna, a natural ecosystem that was once dominant along parts of the Illinois River bluffs.

Nearly twenty years ago Peoria Wilds volunteers began a process of ecological restoration here. Efforts focus on encouraging native forbs and grasses through the removal of invasive weeds, brush cutting, prescribed burns and the use of seeds from native plants.

2012 Science Treasure Hunt Everyday Science Experiments

Remember to Answer the Questions about these Everyday Science Experiments on page C4 & C5.

1. Make That Penny “Come Clean”. Supplies needed: Five tarnished pennies, tap water, ketchup, table salt, vinegar, several saucers (small bowls). What to do: Lay the saucers on the kitchen counter and put one penny in each. Cover one penny with tap water, cover another penny with ketchup, and cover the next penny with vinegar. For penny number four, put damp salt on the penny. Finally for the last penny mix a little bit of vinegar with a little bit of salt and then coat the penny with the mixture. Leave all of the pennies to sit for several minutes in the various substances. Then rinse them while taking notes on what happens to the penny with each substances.

2. Jerk that paper out! Supplies needed: One plastic bottle full of water with the cap tightly on, and one sheet of paper. What to do: A. Place the paper on the table. Put the bottle in the middle of the sheet of paper. Slowly pull the paper towards you. Does the bottle move with the paper. B. Place the paper on the table again. Put the bottle in the middle of the paper. This time sharply (quickly) jerk the paper towards you. Does the bottle move with the paper?

3. Make Musical Water Glasses. Supplies needed: Four or more identical glasses (made of glass — not plastic), tap water, and a metal teaspoon. What to do: Place the glasses on the kitchen counter. Fill one glass nearly to the brim with water, fill the next glass three-quarters (3/4) full, fill the next glass one-half (1/2) full, fill the last glass one-quarter (1/4) full. Tap lightly on each glass with the teaspoon and observe the sounds that are made.

4. Hot water vs. Cold water: Dissolve that sugar. (Caution: adult supervision required — hot water) Supplies needed: Two small identical drinking glasses, sugar, tap water, and a one-teaspoon measuring spoon. What to do: Fill one glass one-half (1/2) full with cold tap water or better yet use water chilled in the refrigerator. Fill the second glass one-half (1/2) full with the hottest water you can get from the tap. Put one teaspoon of sugar in each glass and stir. Watch carefully and keep adding sugar one teaspoon at a time to each glass, stirring in between each teaspoon until the sugar settles to the bottom of each glass. This indicates that no more will dissolve. Keep track of how many teaspoons you dissolved in each glass.

5. Dropping objects Supplies needed: Two 8 1/2”x11” sheets of paper, two small stones of different weights. What to do: A. Hold two stones in your hands with your arms straight out. Drop both of the stones at the same time. Which one hits the ground first. (Try this with other solid objects) B. Crumple one sheet of paper as tightly as you can. Leave the other sheet flat (DO NOT Crumple). Hold the crumpled paper in one hand and the flat sheet in the other with your arms straight out. Drop them at the same time. Which one hits the ground first. C. Hold one stone in one hand and the crumpled piece of paper in the other with your arms straight out. Drop them at the same time. Which one hits the ground first?

6. Why aren’t eggs perfectly round? Supplies needed: A hard boiled egg and a ball. What to do: Roll both the egg and the ball across the kitchen floor and observe whether they roll in a straight line or not.

7. Looking through colors. Supplies needed: Food coloring, tap water, large clear glass container (example: a quart size pyrex measuring cup), a smaller clear glass that will fit into your larger one. What to do: Fill the large container one-half (1/2) full with tap water and add yellow food coloring to the water. Fill the smaller container three-quarters (3/4) full with water and add blue food coloring. Place the small container into the larger container being sure not to let any yellow water into the blue water. Look through the yellow water in the larger container at the blue water in the smaller container. What do you see?

8. Cotton Tale Supplies needed: Two cotton balls, vegetable oil, a drinking cup, a clear glass container, and tap water. What to do: Fill the container with several inches of water. Place one (1) cotton ball into the oil and rotate it until it is covered with oil. Leave the other cotton ball dry. Put both cotton balls into the water. Watch for three (3) minutes. What happens?

9. What is in the “empty glass”? Supplies needed: A drinking glass, a kitchen sink full of water. What to do: Fill the sink nearly full. Hold the “empty glass” upside down just above the surface of the water. Then plunge the glass upside down to the bottom of the sink. Slowly turn the glass over and observe if anything “escapes” from the glass.

10. Why does it rain? (Caution: adult supervision required) Supplies needed: A bowl, a dinner plate large enough to cover the bowl, and tap water. What to do: Put the plate in the refrigerator for about thirty (30) minutes. Fill the bowl three-quarters (3/4) full with water. Heat the bowl of water in the microwave until it is rather hot but not boiling. Have an adult carefully lift the bowl onto the kitchen counter. Place the cold plate over the bowl for several minutes. Lift the plate and observe if it had drops of water on it or not.
