WINE & WARDROBE

CALVIN KLEINSetting the stage for style by bringing the bar

up to a level where quality can’t be questioned,

Calvin Klein for wardrobe and Forman Vineyard

for wine is a perfect pairing when looking to

impress. A Calvin Klein jacket (worn here by Peter)

dresses up a pair of jeans without effort. Forman

Cabernet Sauvignon redefines ‘a glass of red

wine’. This is no ordinary red. It’s a pour that

proves why Napa Valley has the market cornered

on Cabernet. Bar setting, I’m betting, there’s not

a person who won’t be impressed by either label.

WINE & MUSIC

ALICIA MENNINGAMs. Menninga’s piano music draws out

layers of complexity within the mind that transport one to another time. Take for example her piece ‘Progress In The Forests Of The Mind’. It’s transcendental nature resembles that of Torbreck’s 2009 ‘Les Amis’. A Barossa Valley Grenache with seemingly unending depth on both the nose and the palate, it’s easy for one to get lost in the moment, as is the case with her music.

WINE & ART

ANTHONY DUDASIt’s the ‘Dance Rehearsal’ (left) that pairs best

with the Kramer Vineyards 2010 Estate Pinot Noir (below). Pastel & India Ink on paper, this piece by

artist Anthony Dudas mirrors the magnificent dynamic yet delicate nature of the wine.

Great posture is presented in this piece of art and

poured in this bottle of wine. Strength and style reside in both with feminine accents.

WINE & MOVIES

PULP FICTIONWhen sitting down to watch a movie that the

masses have raved about, you might not expect to find a scene that features a ball gag. In the same way, you wouldn’t expect to find a Cabernet such as this from the Eastern side of Oregon like the XIX 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dense violet velour in the glass presents raspberry ink, red rose potpourri and a bit of pepper on the nose. The flavor of cranberry sauce and boysenberry preserves maintain the same intensity on the palate that Pulp Fiction shifts gears with from one unexpected section of the movie to the next. The movie is rated R, just like the wine.

Allie: What’s your LEAST favorite part about making wine?

Randall: Standing around in retail venues, especially large ones, hoping that some customers will show up.  Then, if they actually do show up, trying to make small talk and trying not to look as if one wants to be somewhere else.

Allie: What’s your FAVORITE part about making wine?

Allie: What is the HAREST part about being a winemaker?

Randall: The hardest part I suppose is the tedium of record-keeping (not my forte) and trying to keep track of everything you've done that has worked out either particularly well or not so well.  Also, occasionally bad things happen to good wine (odd bugs infect the wine, the wine turns oddly reductive and you

need to treat it w/ say, copper sulfate).  This can be very challenging.

Allie: What is the EASIEST part about being a winemaker?

Randall: I'm not sure if it is the easiest part or not, but the fact that in general, it (winemaking, or more accurately wine-growing) is so much fun, it really hardly seems like work at all, indeed something I would elect to do whether I were paid or not.

Randall: The very greatest part about making wine is to (occasionally) have the privilege of seeing to a wine from its very inception to finally putting it in the bottle.  This would involve identifying a particular piece of land that one imagines would be brilliant for growing grapes, then working out which variety or varieties would be most suitable, tending to aforesaid varieties through their infancy and adolescence, then working out their most appropriate expression as a wine.  This is an incredibly long and tedious process, but ultimately incredibly satisfying.   Even if I'm not always lucky to be involved in this entire process, just having the opportunity to be outside and work with grape-vines is a real privilege.
