Bahamian law enforcement agencies came in for high marks fromthe government of the United States for their part in a billion-dollar,joint counter-narcotics seizure.

U.S. government representative Daniel Clune, Chargé D’ Affaires atthe U.S. Embassy, congratulated Defense Force Commodore DavyRolle on a drug seizure Tuesday, when the Royal Bahamas PoliceForce (RBPF) vessel, Nassau, spotted a go-fast boat loaded withmarijuana, which was eventually apprehended by an OperationBahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) helicopter and the RBPF fastresponse interceptor boat the PEACEMAKER.

He recalled that in February [2001], outgoing U.S. AmbassadorArthur Schechter formally turned over to The Bahamas a speciallyconstructed fast response interceptor boat to provide a much-neededend-game capability previously lacking in OPBAT helicopter pursuitsof drug trafficing go-fast boats.

This boat, the PEACEMAKER — the same police vessel thatparticipated in Tuesday’s marijuana seizure — is being maintained,

outfitted with a crew, and fueled by the RBPF, and has already provedits value, which far exceeds its initial cost, Clune said.

He noted that the officers who crew PEACEMAKER highly praised itfor its innovative design, that combines high speed, long- rangeendurance, and unusual anti-fuel explosion safety features, as well asexceptional stability in dangerous seas.

Supt. Raymond Gibson, officer in charge of the Drug EnforcementUnit said that officers in the OPBAT helicopter pursued the vesselthat headed up north through the Exuma Cays. The chopper was later assisted by the PEACEMAKER — a police boat the speed ofwhich is top secret. When asked further to elaborate on theperformance of PEACEMAKER he said, “Let’s put it this way, no other boat I know of could have pulled this one off the way PEACEMAKER did.”
