2.1 Skin care

In this module we will teach you how to identify your skin type and how to care for it.

It’s very important to know your skin type, so you can care for it properly with the correct products. To start

with, the best thing you can do to take care of your skin’s beauty is to be healthy. Eating a balanced diet,

regular exercise, avoiding smoking, drinking plenty liquids and managing stress are the best habits for

healthy, beautiful skin. For smooth, hydrated skin it is necessary to: moisturize (can include sunscreen),

tone, exfoliate and drink plenty of water.

There are several types of skin and each must have its own products and care.

Caring for combination skin

Combination skin has different skin types depending on the area of the face. Usually, the T zone (forehead,

nose and chin) are oily and the rest can be dry. It is the most common among women.

1. Do not use soap.

2. Give priority to using milk or cream cleansers to clean your face and remove cleanser with a damp cotton

cloth. Then, wipe with another cotton wet with astringent lotion around the forehead, nose and chin.

3. At night, use cold cream on your face.

4. Every 15 days, apply a moisturizing mask that provides moisture without too much oil.

5. Every 10 to 15 days exfoliate to eliminate toxins and dead skin and to smooth.

6. Always use moisturizing creams or moisturizers, toners, makeup remover and make up suitable for

combination skin.

Caring for dry skin

Dry skin is defined by lack of brightness and fine pores and tends to peel. It’s sometimes accompanied by

excessive sensitivity which can also produce redness and eczema. With this type of skin premature

wrinkling is more likely to occur because there is not enough natural oil. Poorly hydrated skin also tends to

get irritated easily since it is more vulnerable.

Use a mild cleanser.

Avoid toners with alcohol.

Use a daily moisturizer indicated for dry skin with added vitamins.

Once a week, apply a nourishing mask and moisturizer. The recommended masks

for this type of skin are with collagen, vitamin C, etc. Make sure you’re consuming

enough vitamins and enough liquid. Consult your doctor about including additional

vitamins in your diet.

Protect your skin from extreme heat and cold. Never forget sunscreen.

Caring for oily skin

Oily skin is characterized by a bright tone and is usually accompanied by open pores and is prone to

scariness. In this type of skin pimples usually occur if oil production is excessive and care is scarce or

inadequate.

Many women think that oily skin does not require moisture but, while this skin can have excess lipids (oil),

it may lack water. Therefore this skin needs treatment that protects and simultaneously hydrates skin, such

as sebum-regulating treatments.

Recommendation

Avoid cleaners that are too drying (if skin becomes too dry, it will tend to produce more

protective oil).

Use oil-free sunscreen.

Apply a moisturizer suitable for oily skin (oily skin still needs hydration).

Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Water, fruit juices and herbal teas also help you maintain healthy

skin.

Avoid thick makeup. This adds oil to your skin.

You can use any sebum-controlling cream (which controls oil) as long as it’s recommended by a trusted

dermatologist.

A clay mask is recommended every week or fortnight.

In case of acne:

Don’t squeeze pimples; this will leave marks on your skin that may not clear.

Don’t touch spots with dirty hands, this can cause skin infections?

Every three months have a facial treatment.

Try to have a balanced diet avoiding excess oil.

Control your stress levels.

Take regular exercise.

Avoid wearing makeup all day as your skin won’t have time to breathe.

Cleanse your face twice a day with products designed specifically to treat

acne and marks, made by dermatologists. The best results are obtained when you

use products recommended by a professional which are specific to each individual.

Once or twice a week, apply a mask containing active bactericidal.

We must bear in mind that acne is not only a problem for people with oily skin. Many dry and

combination skins are also prone to acne problems.

Caring for sensitive or delicate skin

Many people have sensitive skin and it’s often not treated properly. Sensitive skin is characterized by

redness due to abnormal dilation in vessels and capillaries which usually translates into uncomfortable

itchiness, tightness and flaking.

Sensitive skin is very fragile and vulnerable. External factors affect it more than other skin types and if not

properly cared for, can often age prematurely. We must also keep in mind that this is a thin, transparent and

very beautiful type of skin.

Recommendations

Clean every night with hypoallergenic cleansers.

Always wear sunscreen.

Apply moisturizers with soothing nutritious ingredients (chamomile, calendula, etc.).

Protect skin from extreme heat and cold. Always choose a good quality moisturizer with sun protection

factor 15 at least. This would be advisable for all skin types especially for sensitive or delicate skin.

Avoid irritants in your diet: coffee, alcohol, chemicals and food additives

(preservatives, artificial flavorings and colorings). Also, avoid beauty products

that are not hypoallergenic, alcohol-based perfume, lanolin and clay masks.

Instead of these we recommend compresses or soothing masks with chamomile, lavender and vitamin K.

Caring for devitalized or faded skin:

Recommendations

Clean and remove make-up with a cream for dry skin or sweet almond oil.

Apply a nourishing cream and if necessary, a special cream to the area around the eyes and neck.

Vitamin C creams and ginseng are very useful.

Avoid astringent lotions.

We recommend using products for mature skin as it needs more hydration. A diet rich in fiber and fresh

food is advised.

Drink plenty of fluids and moderate your consumption of tea and coffee.

Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

A nourishing and revitalizing mask is recommended at least twice a month. This

mask may be of vitamin C, oxygen or an intense treatment with hydration and nutrition.

We must not only take into account the skin of our face, but also the skin of the neck,

eyes and lips.

Eyes need extra care

The wrinkles around the eyes are the first to appear given the multitude of movements made with them

during the day.

The area around the eyes has 22 muscles and the skin is very thin and sensitive. The thickness of this skin is

0.33 mm - very fragile and vulnerable to the effects of external factors (cold, wind, sun, polluted

environments). The eye area should be protected around the eyeball, around the bone. It should be given

special care with UV protection which causes damage to the collagen and elastin, drying the fine skin of this

part of the face. Wrinkles may appear very young and "crow's feet" from 30 to 40 years.

The eye contour area ages before others because there is less collagen and elastin fibers present. There are

no sweat glands and very few sebaceous glands. There is a large concentration of blood vessels and blood

circulatory systems are slower.

The skin of smokers

By habit, smokers close their eyes to avoid cigarette smoke. This gesture forces the occurrence of a greater

number of creases which, inevitably, become wrinkles.

Lip Care

Having chapped and dry lips is a very common problem. The causes are various: cold, wind, heat, dry

environments, dehydration, poor diet, lack of vitamin A, B and C ... all these factors make lips become

irritated and lose their natural lubricant.

Here we will tell you some tips and tricks to keep lips cared for:

Avoid licking your lips; saliva results in dry lips.

Drinking water and staying hydrated will help keep your lips healthy.

Always keep your lips hydrated and use special products for your lips.

Facial or body moisturizer does not provide the same hydration. As a guide, the contour

of the eye has properties more similar to those of your lips, so treat them gently!

Always keep a lip moisturizer in your bag to keep lips hydrated during the day.

Use pencils and lipsticks that are hypoallergenic moisturizers without dyes or excess

preservatives.

Apply lip cream or oil every night before going to sleep to avoid dry and cracked lips.

Protect your lips from the sun not only in summer. Lip skin contains no melanin and cannot be protected

from UV rays. Use lipstick that contains an SPF of 15.

Exfoliate with an extra-soft brush doing a massage to accelerate circulation or you can do a soothing

massage with your fingers.

Avoid smoking, drinking too much alcohol and too much caffeine.

Clean your lips after eating fatty or salty foods because these dry too much.

Exfoliate your lips in the shower with a paste of honey or oil and a little brown sugar.

Do this at least once a week. Finish off your exfoliated lips with green or black tea.

Having a balanced diet also helps you to have beautiful lips, and eating foods rich in Vitamin B.

Never pull at the skin on your lips as you can cause marks or wounds or even create infections
