Some 20 Suffolk students havewon university scholarships thatwill entitle them to $175 per termfor eight terms of a college course,the State Education department an-nounced Monday.

Two Local YouthsHeld, Charged withAssaulting Woman

Brooklyn Woman Complainsof Beating; Geo. T. Lucia,Geo. Welborne Accused

Accused of beating up a Brook-lyn woman who said she was resist-ing a rape attempt, two youths ofthe Patchogue area were arrestedSunday by State police on chargesof second degree assault , and willbe examined on the charge at 10a. in. Monday by Justice of thePeace Moses Drake of Bay Shore,who has set bail at $1,500 apiece.

The accused are George T. Lucia,aged 17, of 35 Second street , Pat-chogue , and George O. Welborne,aged 20, of Thomas street, NorthPatchogue. They were arrested Sun-day by Sergeant Howard Heddinkand Corporal Walter McLaughlin ofthe Bay Shore State Police sub-station.

The alleged assault occurred after1 a. m. Friday, according to police,who said that Mrs. Shirley Buck-ner, aged 30, of 487 ' Ralph avenue,Brooklyn, telephoned headquartersabout 1:30 a. m. to report an at-tempted rape.

Mrs. Buekner told police that sheentered an automo'bile occupied bytwo young men when the ear stopp-ed at a traffic signal in Oakdale.She said that she was on her wayto Brooklyn , and that she offeredthe youths $10 if they would driveher there. Instead, she continued,they drove to a deserted spot onConnetquot avenue, North GreatRiver, where they attenpted to rapeher, and beat her with their fists.

She finally managed to get awayfrom them, she said, and telephonedpolice from a. nearby house. Policesaid that Mrs. Buekner suffered twoblack eyes and other facial injuries.

Found at the scene of the allegedassault was Lucia's wallet, whichpolice said evidently had been ac-cidentally hurled from the car whileMrs. Buckner's effects were beingthrown out after her.

It was learned that Lncia is nowon probation with the Patchoguepolice because of a previous offense.Last March, he was given a sus-pended sentence and placed on pro-bation for six months when he plead-ed guilty to a charge of third de-gree assault. On that occasion, heand a companion had beaten up aPatchogue youth, allegedly becausethey were irritated by the brightlights of his automobile.

$39,602 RaisedFor Cancer Fund

Suffolk county residents contribut-ed $39,602 to the 1949 Suffolk Cancerfund, or within one per cent of the§40,000 goal, according to ErastusH. Munson of Babylon, county fundchairman. Fragmentary reportsstill to be filed by volunteer groupsin scattered sections of Suffolk maysend the drive total over the top. hesaid.

In making this report to Mrs.Harry J. Fajans, executive directorof ihe Suffolk Cancer committee,, Mr.Munson highly praised the public forits generous response to the annualappeal, and to the workers who tookpart in it, and said the goal hadbeen closely geared to the increas-ing demands for the committee's as-sistance in cancer cases. Gets 180-Day SS forCutting up Brother

Accused of cutting his brother'sabdomen with a carving knife, Jo-seph J. Leonard, 26-year-old insur-ance broker of Lotowana lane, StonyBrook, was given a 180-day suspend-ed sentence and placed on probationfor two years Sunday when hepleaded guilty to a charge of thirddegree assault before Justice of thePeace Donald W. Shaw.

Joseph Leonard was arrested byBrookhaven Town Patrolman CharlesJ. Leyes after his "brother, Thomas,of the same address, told policethat Joseph had stabbed him duringa quarrel. Police also confiscateda .32 calibre pistol and two swordswhich Joseph said Thomas had usedto threaten him. Police said the quar-rel occurred about 3 a. m. Sunday.
