BRIDGING THE GAP

Giving Others a Chance for Recovery

At 20 years sober I moved to Sonoma County and knew I had to get into service right away. When an Intergroup Rep. posi-

tion opened up at one of my regular meetings, I took it. It was there that I learned about Bridging the Gap. Having completed my Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies in 2006, my primary interest in BTG was to learn where the treatment centers were located in the county, as I was interested in becoming a volunteer. I was told right away that I could not wear the BTG hat and be a volunteer counselor at the same time.

At the monthly BTG meetings, I learned that this subcommittee of General Service is designed to bridge the gap between an individual in a facility, and A.A., on a temporary-contact basis. BTG presenters go to facilities on a regular basis to let clients know that they can sign up to have a BTG volunteer contact them upon their release and take them to an A.A. meeting in their local community. My son has been battling drug addiction for 25 years. He completed three residential treatment programs only to relapse upon release. I know that if Bridg-ing the Gap were available for him, he may have had a chance.

If you’re interested in this Twelfth Step work, you can serve as a presenter at one of the monthly facility meetings, or sign up to be on the volunteer call list to take a newcomer to an A.A. meeting in your community, or just come to a meeting at the Bookstore on the third Tuesday of the month, 6:30-7:30 p.m. (orientation for new members at 6 p.m). Hope to see you there!

— Linda W., BTG Women’s Telephone Coordinator

Bookstore Depends on its Volunteers

The Central Office and Bookstore depends greatly on its volun-teer staff to keep regular business hours, the bookshelves

stocked, inventory labeled, sales transactions handled accurately, phones answered in a friendly and knowledgeable manner, and many other duties that require skill, willingness, dedication and sound judgment.

The Central Office and Bookstore is currently staffed by 19 volunteers who cover approximately 50 shifts per month. Without our dedicated volunteer staff, the Central Office and Bookstore might only be open on a very limited schedule. I write this as a reminder for all of us to be grate-ful when we come to the Central Office and are greeted by the smiling volunteer behind the desk.

— In Service, Linda M.

The doughnut and the hole of the doughnut depend upon each other in order to remain complete – for without a hole, by definition, it would no longer be a doughnut.

What About the Homebound or Hospitalized A.A.s?

I have noticed a lot more gray hair or no hair at all (in my case) at meetings lately. As we get older, besides the issue of hair, there

can be illness. Being homebound or in a hospital can be boring, de-pressing and lonely. Nothing worse for an alcoholic than being bored, depressed or lonely. So the question is, are we remembering to carry the message into the hospital room or home of a fellow A.A.? The first step is to be on the lookout for missing members at meetings. If we find out that a fellow member is in the hospital or homebound, our next question should be, would they like us to bring a meeting to them?

Another aspect of this issue is getting to meetings. Can we offer a ride to someone who is unable to drive, no longer drives or doesn’t drive at night? If we at Access Sonoma County can be of any help to you in taking a “meeting in” or taking someone to a meeting please contact us. A.S.C. is not a taxi service, but we will do everything we can to make a meeting available to our fellow A.A.

If you are interested in doing a little more to make the “I am Re-sponsible” statement more than a few words, come join us. We meet on the second Thursday of each month; the next meeting is March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the SCIF Bookstore, 750 Mendocino Ave, Santa Rosa. Meetings last no more than one hour. See you there.

— Al S. and John F.

Facts About the Intergroup Central Service CommitteeThe Intergroup Central Service Committee (ICSC) is a manage-

ment and oversight committee specifically charged with responsibil-ity to set the policy, regulate the affairs, and oversee the operation of the SCIF Central Office/Bookstore. It also advises the Steering Committee on matters affecting SCIF’s status as a non-profit corpo-ration, making sure that state and federal government regulations are followed and regulatory filings are completed as required. As such, it fulfills many of the functions cited as responsibilities of “the Board of Directors” in the California Corporations Code.

The ICSC is a rotating body of five members – two officers and three at-large members elected by the group representatives. The composition of the ICSC committee changes several times a year, providing both continuity and fresh eyes.

SONOMA COUNTY ICSC

The Whole Doughnut Hole“If I keep on turning my life and my will over to the care of

Something or Somebody else, what will become of me? I’ll look like the hole in the doughnut.”

(p. 36, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions)

I think I understand what the authors were saying here; but over some time now, a deeper revelation has come to me, giving the

hole in the doughnut a more significant role than the original message may have conveyed.

The doughnut and the hole of the doughnut depend upon each other in order to remain complete – for without a hole, by definition, it would no longer be a doughnut. The hole is what makes a doughnut a doughnut!

We all can relate to the feelings we had when we first came to A.A., with an aching hole inside us that we couldn’t fill. I know I didn’t feel whole. I tried booze but that didn’t work. By working the Steps, the aching hole was eventually replaced. No, I stand cor-rected … God’s love or one’s True Nature (what do you call it?) has always been there deep inside, but when drinking, I was incapable of noticing, since all I could think about was myself.

Our “doughnut hole” is our spirit. Our practice is to notice it, bringing it to the forefront of our lives. It’s that place before any thoughts appear, for that’s how we live life to the fullest by embracing every moment.

In letting go we are tapping into our True Self – who we really are -- our Universal Spirit.
