and streamflow release analysis,” noted Donald J. Tata, P.E., co-founder and President of Tata & Howard, Inc. “We intend to provide the same high level service to the clients of RHI, and are excited about the wide variety of op-tions we can now offer to our existing and new clients,” explains Tata. To provide the best possible transition for current RHI clients, Tata & Howard will continue operations from Haestad’s Waterbury location, along with all existing RHI employees. “The ac-quisition significantly adds to our talent base and also expands our geographic presence in New England,” Tata commented. “RHI employees bring decades of solid engineering experience to the table, and we are enthusiastic to have them on the Tata & Howard team.”

Ronald G. Litke, P.E., President of RHI, will be retiring and remain available on a limited basis. “In looking to the future, the Board of Directors’ key concerns were our clients and our employees,” he commented. “By joining forces with Tata & Howard, we have ensured seamless transition and exceptional service for our clients, along with a stable and bright future for our employees. Canaan, VT Receives $4.8 million

Funding Package from USDA

Canaan Fire District Number One has been awarded a $4.8 million funding package from the federal government in order to address chronic drinking

water problems. The package, which includes a $2.6 million grant and a $1.9 mil-lion loan, was given by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development for

a major water quality upgrade which will eliminate the use of Canadian springs. The upgrades include a new 150,000 gallon water storage tank, a new water filtration and treat-

ment facility that will also remove arsenic and manganese, and upgrades to the existing water distribution system that serves Canaan and Stewartstown, NH.

“This assistance from USDA Ru-ral Development will help some of the

most rural and remote communities of North-ern Vermont and Northern New Hampshire ensure their residents have clean, healthy, and safe water for decades to come,” said Ted Brady, Director of USDA Rural Development for Vermont and New Hampshire. “USDA Rural Develop-ment has not only invested in essential water infrastructure with this project, but also in the health of Canaan’s people and our region’s economy.”

Gary A. Leach, P.E., Vice President and Manager of Tata & Howard’s St. Johnsbury, Vermont office, will act as Project Manager for the project. The project team includes Ken Trask, P.E., Melissa Leach, P.E., and Dave Ceppetelli, P.E.. De-sign is underway, contruction is expected to commence by May of 2015, and anticipated completion is Summer of 2016.

Independence Day Celebration at Hopkinton State ParkOn Friday, June 27, 2014, Tata & Howard employees were treated to an afternoon Field Day at Hopkinton State Park. At noon, T&H employees from all offices (even Arizona!) headed over to the park where they en-joyed a barbecue, music, organized games, and some perfect New England summer weather. While last year’s event included torrential downpours and even a tornado warning, this year’s sunny, 82-degree day couldn’t have been more beautiful. The games broke employees into six teams and focused on teamwork and problem solving. The final challenge of the day required each team to construct an elevated water tank that could hold a cup of water for a minimum of 30 seconds – using straws, bandaids, a plastic cup, paperclips, and elastic bands. The winning team constructed the tallest tower that also held its water. Needless to say, the laughs were plentiful. We won’t talk too much about the water tank designs, though! Overall, the day was a fun and relaxing break from work, and everyone left with a smile.

Water Fact

Water conservation practices are not widely used in many countries,

including the United States, because the true cost of

providing water is not passed on to

the consumer.

David J. Ceppetelli, P.E., has joined our Vermont office as Project Manager. Dave has over 20 years of water and wastewater construction project man-agement experience, and has man-aged numerous multi-million dollar construction projects. In addition, he

is HAZWOPER and OSHA certified, a licensed Construction Supervisor, and holds Water Treatment Plant Operators li-censes for both treatment and distribution. Dave can be reached at 802-748-9009 or [email protected].

Ryan P. Neyland, P.E., has been pro-moted to Project Manager. Ryan has over nine years of concentrated wa-ter treatment experience, and has been involved in numerous water projects including all phases of plan-ning, design, and construction ser-

vices, as well as pump station rehabilitation and SCADA. He is currently working on the 9 mgd Falmouth Dissolved Air Flotation Water Treatment Plant. He works out of our Marl-borough office and can be reached at 508-303-9400 x108 or [email protected].

Tata & Howard Happenings

Promotion and New HireFitness, Friendship, and FunTata & Howard employees have elected to participate in a compa-ny-sponsored walking challenge. The challenge, which uses FitBit technology, breaks employees into teams that compete to be the first to virtually walk completely across the country. At the time of printing, the two teams were in South Carolina and separated by less than 100 miles.

PanMass Challenge Joel S. Loitherstein, P.E., Vice President, participated in his 20th PanMass Challenge the weekend of August 2-3, riding 200 miles from Stur-bridge to Provincetown, MA. The event raises mon-ey for the Jimmy Fund, and Joel personally has raised almost $150,000 over the past 20 years. This year, he rode an almost 60 year old, single gear bike that had belonged to his father, who passed away from cancer in 1991. Congratulations on a job well done, Joel!

Jacobs Associates Selects Tata & Howard for Upper Catskill Aqueduct Optimization Project

Tata & Howard is honored to have been selected by Jacobs Associates for treatment work related to New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) Upper Catskill Aqueduct Optimization project. The Upper Catskill Aqueduct runs 74 miles from the Ashokan reservoir to the Kensico Reser-voir, crossing the Hudson River and several other rivers and streams along the way. The aqueduct was originally constructed between 1910 and 1927. Most of the aqueduct consists of 17-foot high horseshoe shape concrete tunnel, although there are several sections of concrete and steel siphon piping, and large diameter pressure tunnels crossing underneath larger rivers including the Hudson. The aqueduct was originally sized to deliver approximately 640 million gallons of water per day to New York City, although accumulation of biofilm on aqueduct walls and leakage has reduced the current flow rates significantly.

The optimization project will focus on cleaning and repairs to the Upper Catskill Aqueduct to restore flow capacity. Tata & Howard will be responsible for design of a system to treat water and biofilm cleaned from the aqueduct walls. The treatment process will likely involve pumping water, biofilm, and sediment to a series of settling tanks, followed by filtration and UV treatment for disinfection. The treated effluent will be returned to the aqueduct in order to conserve as much water as possible for future potable use. Treatment is likely to take place at five different locations, upstream of each of the large pressure tunnel river crossings.

Complicating the process will be the need to consider the water supply needs of several communities who rely upon the aqueduct. Each section of aqueduct is likely to be offline for 6 to 8 weeks without disturbing consumer use. Additionally, access to the aqueduct is generally in rural and in some cases wooded locations without power, so timing of work activities and minimizing environmental impact will be important considerations.

Pilot testing of aqueduct cleaning and treatment processes is currently planned for this fall. Tata & Howard is expected to be involved in facility planning, design, and leak mitigation stages of the project through the year 2017. Stay tuned for future updates on this exciting project!
