Blessing Of Homes The Feast of the Epiphany

January 4, 2015 The custom of blessing homes began in the Middle Ages. This is an annual blessing of the home by the Head of the House gathered with the whole family. A parent with blessed chalk, marks the inside or out-side of the main door (or on the doorframe) with the ini-tials of the Magi (Three Kings) with a cross between each. The initials of their names in Latin are used. Before the first initial write the first two digits of the year, fol-lowed by a cross and then the initials C+M+B and an-other cross followed by the last two digits of the year. Thus for this upcoming Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 5th, mark: 20+C+M+B+15. It is also true that the letters C+M+B stand for the Latin: "Christus mansionem benedicat" or "May Christ bless this house". At any time between now and the Epiphany please bring a piece of chalk to any of our parish priests, we will be happy to bless it for you to use in blessing your own homes.

WHERE WE GOT THE BIBLE

IS IT TRUE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH CHAINED THE BIBLE? Yes, for the same reason banks chain pens. The earliest manuscripts of the Bible we have today date back to the 4th century. It was during this time the church began the laborious task of copying the sacred writings. Done primarily by monks, that work was vouched for by the Catholic Church. Monks copied the Bible onto

parchment (sheepskin), a more durable material than papyrus. Bible scholars estimate that it took approximately 427 sheep-skins to make one Bible, the equivalent of 10 years of wages at the time. -

Prayer for Migrants and Refugees

Mary Most Holy, you, together with St. Joseph and the Child Jesus, experienced the suffering of exile. You were forced to flee to Egypt to escape the persecution of Herod. Today we entrust the men, women and children who live as migrants and refugees to your maternal pro-tection. Grant us the grace to welcome them with Christian hospitality, so that that these brothers and sisters of ours may find acceptance and under-standing on their journey. Teach us to recognize your Son • in the migrant who labors to bring food to our tables • in the refugee seeking protection from persecution, war, and fam-

ine • in the woman and child who are victims of human trafficking • in the asylum seeker imprisoned for fleeing without documents May all those who are far from their place of birth find in the Church a home where no one is a stranger. We ask this in the name of your blessed Son, Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

A time to Give and to GiveThanks. There were lots of Smiles on Saturday, December 13th as 500 chil-dren saw Santa Clause and Mrs. Clause come on a Fire Truck. They greeted each child with a hug, a jolly laugh and a candy cane.

The hall was decorated like Santa’s toy store. The patio was decorated like a Winter Wonderland and there were Hot Drinks and Treats for all. Important Information for Catholics Regarding Healthcare Insurance & Covered California

The Catholic Church has long supported access to health care for all and insisted that good health care should respect and support the well-being of all persons, especially those who are the most vulnerable. The federal Affordable Care Act promises to expand cover-age to millions of uninsured and underinsured in our com-munities. However, we need to be aware that under State law, virtually all public and private health insurance policies offered in California, as well as MediCal, provide coverage for abor-tion, contraception, and sterilization. These procedures are immoral and threaten human life at its most vulnerable state. Though required in all state health plans, Catholics are strongly reminded they should not make use of these ser-vices. We, with your support, will continue our public ef-forts to eliminate abortion and all threats to human life and dignity. Under the Affordable Care Act, by February, 2015, all Cali-fornians are required to either obtain health insurance for themselves and their families or sign up for MediCal. If you already have health insurance through your employer, there is nothing more for you to do.

If your employer does not provide health insurance, Covered California can help you apply for MediCal or purchase health insurance, regardless of your age or any preexisting conditions. Depending on your income, this coverage may be free or subsidized by the government.

Immigrants may not be eligible for all services, but US citi-zen children are eligible. We will continue our public efforts to better provide coverage for all immigrants. To find out what services are available for you and your family, contact Covered California at www.coveredca.com or 800-300-1506 or 800-300-0213 (Spanish).

California law requires health insurers to cover abortion, contraception, and sterilization. Under federal law, each state is required to offer at least one insurance plan that does not contain coverage for elective abortion. Within the boundaries of the Archdiocese, there are purported to be two plans that meet the federal requirements. Both of those plans are offered by Anthem Blue Cross. These plans are:

Silver 70 EPO Multi-State Plan Gold 80 EPO Multi State Plan

So, while we encourage you to sign up for coverage, we once again clearly state that, although state exchange health plans may cover morally objectionable services; you ought never to make use of those particular services. Also, we acknowledge that the two plans listed above may well be too expensive for some families to afford. If that is the case then we encourage families to choose the plan that is best suited for their particular circumstances.

◦ Plan Multi-Estatal EPO Plata 70 (Silver 70 EPO Multi-State Plan) ◦ Plan Multi-Estatal EPO Oro 80 (Gold 80 EPO Multi State Plan)

PARTNERS IN THE PROMISE As a society, during these days we can be in some-thing of a “postpartum” depression. Our celebrations of Christmas and the New Year are over, and after today many of us will put away the decorations and the last visi-ble remnants of the celebrations of the past weeks. The apostle Paul today uses the expression “partners in the promise.” This is an uplifting phrase for us to reflect upon, and to think of as our own calling in these days fol-lowing the birth of the Lord. What is this promise? We can find it in the gifts the magi bring: it is a promise of being a royal priesthood (gold), a holy nation (frankincense), a people set apart for self-giving (myrrh). We find more of the promise in Isaiah—a light shines upon us! In the psalm we know a promise of a world of flowering justice, profound peace, the poor rescued, pity for the lowly and the poor. This is the promise; and one of the best ways for us to lift ourselves out of any possible low spirits we may be suffering is to live out our partner-ship in this promise each and every day.

Shopping mall safety tips It’s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us at holiday time. It is especially important to monitor your children when tak-ing them through the mall during the Christmas season. If children become separated from you, teach them to

look for a “safe stranger” who can help them. For example, a mom with kids or the cash register person can help a child who is lost. Avoid telling children to go to the “manager.” Any adult in a suit, who looks important, can look like the manager to a child. Children must be told never to leave the mall or store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited -- no matter what anyone else tells them.
