ABOUT BUTUAN CITY Before, there was no Philippines but there was Butuan. Controversy has been generated regarding the holding of the first mass - but one thing is for sure, from the pieces of balangays that were excavated in parts of Butuan, to ceramics and early trade figures, not to mention the accounts written, who perfectly described the map of Butuan, there was Butuan, way before the Philippines came. Being the commercial industrial and administrative center of Caraga region, Butuan City has proven its dynamism by becoming a fast-paced cosmopolitan city. From being hailed as the HISTORIC CITY because of its past wonders and secrets that made it known not just within the nation but as far as the realms of the world to being the Timber city of the South that highlighted the richness of its resource, this booming city continues its service by the sprawl of districts that is converted to industries for the populace to enjoy. The balangay, palagsing, unaw, to remarkable people you will surely wish to be with; Butuan will remain humble in its beginnings. ABOUT CARAGA REGION CARAGA – from the native word KALAG which means SOUL, breathes from its bounties. Surely, it is not named as the region of spirited men for nothing. Composed of 5 provinces, 1 highly urbanized city and 5 component cities dividing its rich resource that makes a haven of pristine water forms and mountain ranges, a marsh and a river basin that sits regal, the surfing capital and game fishing capital, islands of different attributes, trails perfect for any sport, international event; caves with naturally covered minerals, events and festivals that converge people not just in the same nationality but diverse, name it all and we will give it to you.

INVITATION

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This is to invite you to the Philippine National Remote Sensing Conference 2017 (NRSC 2017) to be held from 28 to 29 November 2017 in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte in Caraga Region, Mindanao, Philippines.

The NRSC 2017 will continue the tradition of previous national Remote Sensing conferences of bringing together local and international scientists, engineers, researchers, decision-makers, users, and interested individuals or groups from the academe, government, industry and non-governmental organizations to communicate and actively exchange technical information on Remote Sensing and related geospatial science and technology.

But more than this, NRSC 2017 is envisioned to be the best venue to bring Remote Sensing science closer to the people, giving them a unique experience on how it works for us to have a better life. NRSC 2017's theme "Remote Sensing Science for the People" actually echoes the "Science for the People" campaign of the Philippines' Department of Science and Technology (DOST). NRSC 2017 therefore aims to showcase the country's best in Remote Sensing and Geosciences research and services, and to recognize their contributions in the development of the country. NRSC 2017 will also discuss the potential and practical uses of this exciting field of science and technology on reducing economic inequality, creating more opportunities, and expanding the potential for growth as a country.

We are hoping that you could join us in Butuan City this coming November 2017, and make the conference a success.

Truly yours,

Engr. Meriam Makinano-Santillan Chair, Local Organizing Committee Caraga State University

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING NRSC 2017

Keynote and Plenary Sessions Distinguished speakers from the academe, government, and the Remote Sensing. Geosciences and Geospatial Industries will speak on a variety of topics revolving around the conference theme. Participants will be given opportunity to discuss with the speakers and contribute their insights on the presented topics. Special Sessions NRSC 2017 will be held more than one year after the launching in space of Diwata 1, the Philippines’ first microsatellite. The conference is therefore an important venue to update the remote sensing community on the status and latest developments after the launching of our satellite through conduct of special sessions. Also, there will be a presentation for the potential and practical uses of Remote Sensing and related Geosciences on reducing inequality between the poor and the rich, creating more new opportunities, and expanding the potential for growth as a country. Thematic Sessions The conference will feature oral and poster presentations of papers discussing the practical and scientific applications of Remote Sensing and Geosciences on the following thematic areas:

Environment Natural Resources and Commodities Urban and Infrastructure Disaster Management / Climate Change Impacts and

Adaptation Welcome Dinner and Fellowship Night The evening of November 28 will be a night of cultural performances from the host university. Every participant is enjoined to have fun, make friends, and enjoy the food and the performances.
