Reflecting on Jesus

Him: I love Lent. Her: I don’t. Him: What? Why not? Her: It’s so sad. Depressing music, sad themes, the end of winter. Yuck, yuck, no thank you.

Him: Sad? It’s happy! A time of rejoicing, rich, meaningful music, the work of Jesus for you and me. What could be happier? Her: Jesus not dying! Him: You have a point. But without his death, there’s no Easter. Without Easter, there’s no eternal life. So do you see my point too?

Her: I love Easter. Him: I do too, that’s why I love Lent. Lent makes Easter meaningful! Her: I see your point, but I still don’t love it.

Jesus: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Love Lent? Not so much?

Come to Jesus, through his work reflected on at Lent, we are prepared to celebrate his work completed in the resurrection. See you in church, Pastor Hanson

LWML Convention

It’s 2020. Check your vision! If you want that perfect vision, “Walk by faith, not by sight.”

(2 Corinthians 5:7) When you walk without having your eyes firmly fixed on Jesus, your sight is not clear and you stumble and fall. By fixing your eyes on Jesus, your vision is 20/20.

Jesus Be My Vision, based on 2 Corinthians 5:7, is the theme of the North Wisconsin District LWML Convention. It will be held June 14-16 at the Radisson Hotel and Convention Center right here in Green Bay. The convention includes worship, Bible study, guest speakers, inspiring mission stories, servant events, music, and fellowship. You will be blessed with 20/20 vision as you fix your eyes on Jesus and walk with Him in faith! Make your plans now! Convention information including registration is available at the Welcome Center. You do not need to be a member of LWML to attend. Everyone is invited. For more information contact Karen Schuettpelz at 469-0751or [email protected].

Lenten Worship “It Is Finished”

The Seven Last Words of Christ

Lenten Midweek Worship begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26. Think about it. In your entire life, what will be your most meaningful words? Is-n’t it likely that they would be your final words, especially if you knew you were dying? Jesus did. His final words are some of the greatest reveal-ing statements known to believers. In our Lenten Midweek Worship Services at Pilgrim this year, we will focus on the magnitude and meaning of Jesus’ final words. Each week our worship theme will emphasize one of the seven final words that Jesus spoke as He offered up His life on the cross. The series of worship services will take parishioners to the cross to hear the Savior speak and then invite them to take the message from the cross to life in our world today. Our worship services will power-fully reveal that the cross itself is the ultimate moment to understand our journey of faith in this sacred season. Lent is a season of reflection and re-pentance, helping us to prepare for the events of Holy Week and Easter. To assist each home to this a meaningful season, here are some additional plans for our Lenten journey.

Devotional materials- “It is Fin-ished” are available for the Lenten season

Pilgrim’s Lenten Cross Project-Each week your family can re-ceive an additional cross piece to assemble over the Lenten season. The completed cross makes a beautiful and meaningful wall hanging for your home.

Midweek Worship on Wednes-days at 8:30am and 7:00pm with communion offered every week.

Weekly Soup Suppers - Our fami-ly soup dinners provide great food & fellowship and every donation goes directly to Pilgrim’s mis-sionaries. They begin at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

dren, teachers, and staff on Mondays from 1:15-2:15 pm in the church li-brary. For any questions please call Marlene Hanson at 920-468-1110.

Ministry Action Teams Need You!

Just as the Bible teaches that all Christians are an important part of the body of Christ, we as members of this congregation all have a part on the Pilgrim ministry team. To help you find your ministry niche’ we’ve created a multitude of Ministry Action Teams. For the month of March we are highlighting these teams as a possibility for your involvement:

Lenten Soup Suppers - Our Wednesday evening soup suppers start on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26th through April 1st. These are hosted by various ministries with volunteers needed to help each week. Donations of desserts/drinks are appre-ciated.

Suamico Spaghetti Dinner - The Pilgrim Suamico site is holding a Spaghetti Dinner to support Pilgrim missionaries. This will be held on Sat., March 7th, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. The dinner is all you can eat, plus dessert. A Free Will Offering will be collected.

Palm Sunday Breakfast - April 5, 8:30-11 am. It is hosted by Pilgrim Youth. Adult and Youth volunteers are needed to help with this annual event. Proceeds will help youth attend the Summer Youth Mission Trip.

Easter Egg Hunts - Teams are needed to plan and execute the annual Easter Egg Hunts at the Green Bay Site and Suamico Site on Saturday, April 11. Help is needed to replenish treats and guide children in the egg hunt.

Sign up sheets for these Ministry Action Teams may be found at the Welcome Center. Any questions - please call the Ministry Office or contact [email protected]

4 Pilgrim’s Progress

Lutheran Heritage Foundation

by Carolyn Fiedler

Our Coins for Christ focus for the month of March is Lutheran Heritage Foundation. Their mission: to

translate, publish, distribute and introduce Lutheran materials for the church around the world. Let’s see how it all began. The Oct ‘17 issue of The Word at Work notes “It was a time of amazing opportunity. The atheist Soviet Union had collapsed and for the first time in 70 years, doors were open to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with people living behind the Iron Curtain. Rev. Rahn seized the opportunity by traveling to Moscow, where he and a few friends distributed Bibles and tracts in Red Square.” “It was Reformation Day 1992, and we decided to test the degree of religious freedom in Russia,” he said. “It was a smooth operation. What was most significant was that after the literature was distributed, we checked every garbage can in the Red Square area, and we didn’t find a single Bible or discarded tract. Everything disappeared!” During his time in Russia, Rev. Rahn saw a hurdle to telling the people about Jesus: there was very little Lutheran literature available in the language of the people. So from the basement of his home, Rev. Rahn started LHF. Now, more than 25 years later, confessional Lutheran literature is being translated for people in more than 80 countries and 100 languages. In August, Rev. George Ondieki (LHF translator in Kenya, Africa) traveled from Nairobi with boxes of catechisms and Bible storybooks packed in his vehicle. As he neared the Kitui region, it became evident that the area was suffering a major drought. Rev. Ondieki visited 2 new Lutheran congregations. These people, although physically thirsty and fam-ished, also felt a real spiritual thirst. Two girls, ages 12 and 14, walked 4 hours through an area infested with poisonous snakes just to get to the church service. Imagine their joy to receive LHF’s Swahili edition of A Child’s Garden of Bible Stories – possibly the only book they ever owned. Somalia, in northeast Africa, is one of the world’s most dangerous places to be a Christian. Over 99% of the country’s population are Muslim. Christians run the risk of being executed. However, small, secret groups of Christians have formed, including a Somali Lutheran Church. With no known trained pastors inside Somalia’s borders, LHF’S catechisms and devotions in the Somali language bring answers to questions and the comfort of God’s Word. About 100 books are smuggled in and delivered to Christians every month. Pray for protection for them. Lutheran Heritage Foundation has published and distributed about 3 million Lutheran books to pastors, seminary students, missionaries and churches – all at no cost to them. The Good News of salvation is free to all of us. Let’s show our thankfulness through our gifts and prayers for Lutheran Heritage Foundation this month.

Wisconsin Choose Life Plates

By Dale Bartel, Parish Education

Wisconsin’s first “Choose Life” license plate was approved on November 30, 2016, after ten years of opposition from abortion groups. The plates were then designed and pro-duced and have been available since October 2017. This is a great way you can get the Choose Life message to people who daily see your license plate. With over 1,200 plates sold, Choose Life Wisconsin received over $46,000 from the sale of the plates. A one time $15 issuance fee and $25 annual tax deductible donation along with the application and $85 renewal fee will get you the plates. Choose Life license plate application forms are available at the service desk of your local DMV. In Psalm 139:13-16 it states: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

“God”incidences - God Never Misses a Beat by Ruth Schultz

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

Every day people share life experiences that they claim are coincidences. But as people of God we know that they are much more than that. God’s intervening hand makes them “God”incidences (*). After suffering through four days of what John thought was the flu, with a growing “boil” as a side effect, he took himself to the walk-in clinic to get checked out. After checking him over the nurse practitioner knew the ex-tremely painful “boil” was more than they could handle at the clinic and was able to acquire an appointment for him with Dr. Falk (*) just a couple hours later. When he arrived and was seen by Dr. Falk, it was soon deter-mined that an ER visit for IV antibiotics, tests, X-rays, and CT scan was necessary with surgery to be scheduled for that early evening (*). The nurse, who is a mother of students at our school (*), put him in a wheelchair and took him out to the parking lot where he was loaded up into Dr. Falk’s car. On the ride to the ER, John found out that the doctor’s children had attended Pilgrim and he had done some coaching as well (*). Pastor Malme was able to pray with us as we waited for the procedure sharing that we were in good hands with Dr. Falk. We met with Dr. Falk before surgery as he explained that John had necrotizing fasciitis and needed to have all the affected tissue in that area removed before it got to the bloodstream. Both of us are grateful for the Godly compassionate man of wisdom that he is. When I arrived at the surgical waiting room, I contacted both pastors again and shared the news and asked for prayers. I shared more details with my children via texts. It was then I found out that our youngest daughter, Sarah, was good friends with Dr. Falk’s oldest daughter who later called Sarah and prayed with her (*)! Next, I posted a prayer request on Facebook to former students, parents, other friends, and family. Hundreds of prayers were lifted up, many of which were then shared with other prayer groups of theirs (*). You, too, at Pilgrim have included him in your prayers as well (*). God put so many nurses, doctors, CNA’s, medical students, and other hospital employees into John’s life over those five days (some even had a direct connection to our church/school) (*) giving him opportunity to share about his love for the Lord and Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School. When I talked with Dr. Falk after surgery and John talked with him the next morning, he agreed that God had brought him in at the right time to catch the deadly infection (*). One more day could have had a totally dif-ferent outcome! You know, God never misses a beat! For all this we give God thanks and praise!

Congratulations—Above and Beyond Awards

Thanks to Mike Schumm, Kelly Schumm, and Kari Williams for their planning and preparation for all the special activities for National Lutheran Schools Week. We also thank Stephanie Demelle for her volunteering extra time and service to help at school. We are thankful for the 7th & 8th grade classes who made the creative and fun games for our School Carnival held during National Lutheran Schools Week. We are grateful for the Cindy Muther, Kelly Schumm, and Dawn Kirchner for their efforts with our Open House. We are so blessed to have people who care so much about our Pilgrim Lutheran School, the people they serve, and our positive church and school climate. These people are our Above and Beyond Award Winners and without them we would not be the quality church and school we are.

Students of the Month—February

Congratulations to our Students of the Month for February. We give thanks for Trisha Hansen, Will Barington, Tolu Adejumo, and Genesis Elvir. They were chosen by their teachers Mr. Duane Long-mire and Mr. Jeremy Schultz because of their leadership, positive attitudes, and exemplary behavior! Way to go!

Thank you for your wonderful support of Pilgrim Lutheran School with your finances, positive words of

encouragement, and especially your prayers! Thanks for the wonderfully positive word of mouth that you share with all you know! It is really exciting to see what the Lord is doing at our school and with our children! We are so very thankful for the Lord continues to do for us! We pray the Lord will continue to bless us all year through!
