The choral master, Lothar Schuhenn stands in the right foreground. The cover photo was taken against the cave wall just under the entrance overhang of the Balver Höhle. A careful comparison with a photo of the entrance dating to 1959 confirms this by the black vertical stains on the wall on left, which conform perfectly with those seen behind the group on the 1977 LP cover photo. Today an entrance barricade with wide doors partially hide these wall stains. The back cover has a black & white photo of what looks like a full orchestra concert on the stage back inside Balver Höhle, before a large audience. This choral LP was not recorded in the cave; it was made at the Tonstudio Helmut Firll in Menden, a few kilometers north of Balve. It was a local private pressing of originally only 700 copies, which quickly went out of print. A further pressing was ordered. (Scherer 2011) For more information about Balver Höhle and the various jazz concerts that were recorded there see under Recorded in Caves In Natural Caves Germany. Balver Höhle Balve im Hönnetal, Sauerland PC-RE-DE1 West Germany 1977 LP: BALVER KINDERCHOR Perf: Balver Kinderchor (Choral) Label: HFH 201177 Photo: Manfred Opitz Notes: Gatefold LP cover shows the Balver Kinderchor (Balver Children’s Choir) consisting here of 68 choral singers, predominantly girls standing on the sloping ledge just under the cave entrance.

The back cover has a black & white photo of what looks like a full orchestra concert on the stage back inside Balver Höhle, before a

large audience. This choral LP was not recorded in the cave; it was made at the Tonstudio Helmut Firll in Menden, a few kilometers north of Balve. It was a local private pressing of originally only 700 copies, which quickly went out of print. A further pressing was ordered. PC-RE-DE3 Germany 2000 CD: KRISTALLE Perf: Günter Müller, Chris Kramer, & Andreas Burghardt (New Age) Label: Blow Till Midnight (?) Photo: (Color) Notes: An overall shot in the Kaiserhalle (Kaiser Room) of this cave showing a massive flowstone cascade and draperies tinted turquoise green in the foreground and a tall stalagmite tinted red in the background. The colors might have been obtained by the use of colored lights but the hues are so intense and artificial looking that it is assumed the photo was retouched. The back cover of the 12-page booklet has a photo of a large room in the cave, probably Tempelraum, with numerous tiny lights scattered about the flat floor. In the 12-page liner notes booklet a photo is provided for each of the 19 groups that were included on this double CD and of these, 12 photos show the group performing in the cave. Both CDs carry a design of a stylized black long-eared bat. The inner tray card has a rough stick map showing how to find this show cave. The 24-page liner notes booklet has several cave or cave-related photos: the natural entrance to the cave; a shelter cave overhang near the cave; small soda straw stalactites (same photo as the cover of the fourth CD in the series); illustration of a cave lion; illustration of a Neanderthal man; Tempelraum (Temple Room); a dancer in the cave “The Cave Fairy” (shown below); a table set for the candlelight dinner in the cave; an aerial shot of the entrance buildings surrounded by a forest of trees in the Autumn (the same photo as the cover of the third CD in the series).

The CD itself has a stylized long-eared bat in black silhouette. The inner tray card (see above) has a rough stick map showing how to find this show cave. _____________________________________________________ Heimensteiner Höhle Neidlingen, Schwäbische Alb PC-RE-DE14 West Germany 1989 CD: ANTON BRUCKNER – SYMPHONIE NR. 4 Cond: Eugen Jochum (Classical) Label: Deutsche Grammophon 427 200-2 Artist: Franz Richter (Austrian, 1774-1863) Title: (?) 1833 Notes: A very characteristic painting from the German-Austrian Romantic period where the artist has taken several liberties with the

motif. The round tower of the ruins somewhat resembles that of the Lichtenstein Castle at Honau in Swabia, but this castle was only reconstructed in 1840-42, almost ten years after the painting. Thanks to the Swiss caver, Pierre Strinati, the cave was identified by means of an old engraving from the

same period as the painting. This engraving was made from a position further back in the cave and shows a different shape for the entrance arch. The tower of the castle is half as high and not round as it is in the Richter painting. This 24m-long cave is a natural tunnel zigzagging through the top edge of the cliffs on the west side of a typical Jura mountain u-shaped valley (reculé), located 2.2 km SW of Neidlingen in Swabia. The ruins of the Reußenstein castle can be seen (much further away) when looking out of the east entrance of the tunnel, and the shape of the entrance here is high and pointed as in the engraving. In the painting a hiker with a

backpack sits resting next to a breakdown block just inside the entrance. However, just in front of the entrance to the actual cave there is a large block, which sits atop a separate small pocket cave. This would have been Martin Bürck’s instillation for his concert in the cave on May 25, 1996. For further information about the cave-inspired music performed by Martin Bürck see under Contemporary Art Music – Avant-Garde – Höhlenkonzert and under Recorded in Natural Caves – Germany. Artist: (Color) Ingo Mesche Notes: A ring of round medallions, one of which (top center) shows an indistinct well-decorated cave interior where the stalagmites are reflected in the waters of a cave lake. These could be the formations in Märchendom in the Feengrotten (Saalfeld, Thüringer Wald), which is a show cave-mine. _____________________________________________________ Unidentified German Cave No. 3 PC-RE-DE20 Germany 1999 CD Single: DAS SCHIFF DER SEHNSUCHT Perf: Bergkristall (Popular) Prod Co: Ast Record; Mürzzuschlag Label: Ast Record 10 029 Artist: (Color) (?) Notes: This group of six musicians are gathered around four stalagmites under a backlit ceiling with clusters of soda straw stalactites. This is a German pop (Schlager) duo, normally consisting of

Stephan and Toni (Stephan Fleschhut & Anton Nittbaur), but for this CD single (“The Ship of Desire”) they were joined by other musicians. Bergkristall Musik Gbr is based in Wemding, Bavaria. There is a show cave up that way, 108 km east of Wemding, namely Schulerloch, that could well have been where this cover photo was taken.
