Three Louisiana Sea Grant Extension/LSU AgCenter agents are the recipients of the 2006 Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea Grant Extension Network’s Outstanding Group Achievement Award for their response and continuing recovery work following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The three receiving the Extension Network award are Albert “Rusty” Gaudé, associ- ate area agent for St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Orleans parishes; Kevin Savoie, area agent and fish- eries agent for the Southwest Louisiana Region and a native of Creole; and Mark Schexnayder, area fisheries agent and hurricane program coordinator for Southeast Louisiana. Schexnayder also received the Conservation Educator honors. The 2005 hurricane season brought unprecedented dev- astation to the U. S. Gulf Coast. Despite all three agents being displaced by either Hurricanes Katrina or Rita, they quickly returned to assist their constituents, most notably fishermen and local governments. “They rapidly became crit- ical points of contact, and their roles in this difficult process are certain to serve as models for other Sea Grant programs confronted with similar circumstances in the future,” said Mike Liffmann, LSG associate executive director. “Rusty, Mark and Kevin provided leadership and advisory and technical support to many of the responding agencies and non- governmental groups involved in the recovery effort. They saw what others didn’t see and drove a direct path to what needed to be done.” Among the trio’s recovery efforts were: soliciting a Marine Travelift from Valdez, Alaska, to get commercial fishing boats back into the water; aiding operators of critical seafood processing facilities in reopening; acquir- ing industrial ice machines to serve the needs of fishermen in Cameron, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes; aiding in the relocation of a dis- placed Lake Pontchartrain Commercial Fishermen Association fleet; and storm debris marking and removal on Calcasieu Lake. Many of their efforts are chronicled in a short docu- mentary titled Sister Storms: A Louisiana Sea Grant Response. The film can be viewed at www.laseagrant.org/comm/m edia.htm. As Outstanding Group Achievement Award recipi- ents, the trio will represent the Gulf region in a national awards competition. The national winners will be announced in the fall. Earlier this month, nearly 500 area residents in Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes participated in local job fairs sponsored by Sempra LNG, the developer of new Cameron LNG liquefied nat- ural gas (LNG) receipt termi- nal under construction in Hackberry. Sempra LNG hosted the Restoration meeting Apr. 10-12 job fairs at Hackberry, Grand Lake and the Louisiana Works Center. The $750 million facility is 40-percent complete and on target to begin operations in late 2008. Members of the Cameron LNG senior management team and human resources staff were present to provide information about current and future jobs, requirements and company benefits. Representatives from the Louisiana Works Department of Labor attended and helped explain and expedite the application process. The other half of the grant will be allo- cated after receipts for the first half have been reviewed. Further, Burleigh wishes to clarify that his business received the same considera- tion as all other Cameron Parish businesses that applied. Tailgating is when a driverfollows too close to the vehiclein front of him. Tailgating is amajor cause of crashes andresults in deaths and injuries.

The “two-second rule” isgenerally accepted as a way ofmaintaining a safe distancebetween vehicles. You can usethe two-second rule by watch-ing the rear bumper of thevehicle in front of you as itpasses a landmark such as asign, pole or tree. Count “onethousand one, one thousandtwo.” If you pass the samelandmark before you finishcounting “one thousand one,one thousand two,” you arefollowing too closely. Slowdown and drop back to a safedistance.

Located just south of theEllender Bridge off Highway27, the Cameron LNG receiptterminal will be capable ofdelivering 1.5 billion cubicfeet per day of natural gas.

Sempra LNG also is build-ing an LNG receipt terminalin Baja California, Mexico,Energía Costa Azul, whichwill be the first on NorthAmerica’s West Coast when itis completed in early 2008.Construction on that projectis about 70-percent complete.

LNG is natural gas thathas been cooled below minus-260 degrees Fahrenheit andcondensed into a liquid. LNGoccupies 600 times less spacethan in its gaseous state, which allows it to be shippedin cryogenic tankers fromremote locations to marketswhere it is needed. At thereceiving terminal, LNG isunloaded and stored until it isvaporized back into naturalgas and moved via pipelinesto customers.

Sempra LNG, a unit ofSempra Energy, develops, builds and operates LNGreceipt terminals in NorthAmerica. Sempra Energy, based in San Diego, is aFortune 500 energy servicesholding company with 2006revenues of nearly $12 billion. The Sempra Energy compa-nies’ 14,000 employees servemore than 29 million con-sumers in the United States,Europe, Canada, Mexico,South America and Asia.

“After the hurricane, I had to

stand on my feet and solve my

own problems. My insurance

that I did have didn’t cover

that much. I heard about The

I was just so relieved that

I tell everyone I know to apply.

There’s only but two words

anyone can tell you: yes and no.

I had to wait for The Road Home

to come through to make repairs because I didn’t have any other

options. The Road Home will help when nobody else will.”

He talked about his workin trying to get the alligatorremoved from the endangeredspecies list and said that he isconfident that two parishes inLouisiana, includingCameron, will be consideredfor another alligator season.

Breaux expressed histhanks for the 13-foot skinwhich was presented to himin appreciation for his hardwork for the local alligatorhunters.

An announcement fromthe White House Monday saidthat the station, on a 45.56-acre cape on the Louisianaside of the Sabine-Necheswaterway, is being turnedover to Louisiana State Parksand Recreation Commission.

Lamar University deededthe facility back to the federalgovernment last summerafter acquiring more suitablefacilities for the school’soceanographic technologyprogram. The lighthouse hasbeen given to Lamar in thespring of 1971.

The 117-year-old struc-ture, valued at $25,000, was aportion of old Fort Sabine. Itis to be used as “as state com-memorative area withemphasis on the old light-house, to commemorate thehistory of the lighthouse andnatural features of the sur-rounding area,” according toAssociated Press reports.

Accessible only by water, the lighthouse first flashed itsbeam in 1857, continuing sig-nals until the outbreak of theCivil War, when theConfederate governmentextinguished 164 lights alongthe coast to prevent Union

In his book The HouseBeautiful (1881), ClarenceCook said that living areasmust be stocked with books."The only way really to knowanything about English liter-ature, or any other literature,is to grow up with it, to sum-mer and winter with it, to eatit, drink it, and sleep with it .. ."

So assuming a decentselection of books is withinreach, on these long eveningsindulge in the habit of read-ing aloud. Put a little dramain your voice, and don't beafraid to gesture. Cultivate afew tricks -- a diabolical laugh(practice "moo-ha-ha-ha-ha"on a descending scale), astage whisper, a foreignaccent.

Warm up with somethingrousing: "By the shores ofGitche Gumee,/By the shin-ing Big-Sea-Water." This won-derful old saga, The Song ofHiawatha by HenryWadsworth Longfellow, pul-sates with the rhythms ofIndian drums.

Try short stories -- theclassics of O. Henry, for exam-ple -- or books with chapters, like Laura Ingalls Wilder'stimeless Little House series.Move on, as your constituencyages, to more ambitious pro-jects if you like --Shakespeare's plays, theRussian novelists. FACT: In a landfill, biodegradable waste breaksdown into methane, which isa potent greenhouse gas. Abetter solution is to recyclethe product.

MYTH: Someone will gothrough the trash and pullout recyclables before it goesto the landfill.

FACT: Anything throwninto a trashcan usually endsup in a landfill and remainsthere until it finally degrades.Even something as simple asan aluminum can takes 80-100 years to degrade.

MYTH: When tossed to theground, cigarette butts lookbad but do not hurt the envi-ronment.

FACT: Cigarette butts, themost littered item inLouisiana, are not biodegrad-able and remain intact for 10years before breaking apart.

MYTH: Litter does notaffect the economy.

FACT: Litter discourageseconomic development andimpacts real estate values.Businesses are less likely tolocate to a community thatdoes not practice litter con-trol.

"What's done it for me waswhen we drove past, and shejust said 'That's where theschool used to be, let's seewhere the children are now."These were the words ofSimon Elledge, an elemen-tary school principal fromEngland, on seeing the emptyslab where South CameronElementary School used to be.

Elledge was part of agroup of European educators, six from England, one fromPoland, and one from theNetherlands, mostly schoolprincipals, touring LowerCameron Parish on Tuesday. The group from the BritishCouncil is in SouthwestLouisiana as part of aFulbright Exchange program

with Calcasieu Parishschools.

Their purpose is to studythe use of technology in edu-cation. At SCES, Elledge said, the technology just isn't thereany more. He wanted a photoof the slab to take back to hisstudents, to bring home tothem the enormity of the hur-ricane's effects.

One member of theCalcasieu technology team isRuby Miller, formerly ateacher at South CameronElementary. Her team felt itwas imperative for the visi-tors to see Cameron Parish tobegin to understand the livesof the children here.

Miller and her motherJoAnn Nunez arranged a tourof Rockefeller WildlifeRefuge, where biologistGuthrie Perry explainedabout the state of the marsh-es and the recovery of the alli-gator population after thestorm.

Following lunch at therefuge, the group then visitedBenny Welch's "Cajun Ben's"alligator products business.Welch, retired elementaryschool principal and localentrepreneur, showed the vis-itors how the by-products ofthe alligator hide and meatindustry can be turned into aprofitable business.

Looking at the hundreds ofalligator heads drying in thesun, team leader Steph Nealesaid "It's amazing how hetook something that's justthrown away and made a cot-tage industry."

Welch also showed thegroup the three oak trees inwhich he and his family sur-vived Hurricane Audrey. Asthe team ended their tour atthe Cameron Court House, they learned that many oth-ers survived by taking refuge

in the WPA era building. Theyadmired the art deco stylearchitecture and took amoment to reflect on theimpact of all they had seen.

Neale, who has been com-ing to SWLA for six years, said the marshes are a lotcleaner than they were a yearago, but there was still dam-age to be seen. He said hecould tell recovery will be longand slow, and cost a lot ofmoney, but the strong com-munity feeling here wouldmake it happen.

John Grove compared thesituation after Rita to that inEngland during and followingWorld War II, when schoolswere amalgamated - three orfour schools combined asbuildings were destroyed.

Another elementary prin-cipal, Allan Millington wasoverwhelmed by the spirit ofthe people. "We've only beenhere a day," he said, "but I cansay the hospitality has beenabsolutely amazing. You havean incredible sense of pride. In the face of staggering dam-ages, you have an attitude ofnot expecting the governmentto do it, but just saying 'Let's

sort it out'."Becky Ford, with the

Calcasieu Parish School tech-nology center, says that theFulbright Exchange programbegan in 2001 when 22British educators came toLouisiana for a teaching part-nership. She and Neale werepartners then, and in 2002 hecame back bringing studentsto visit Prien LakeElementary. In 2004 she tookher students to his school inEngland. In 2006 he and hisfamily came to help with hur-ricane recovery, funding sixchildren for technology camp. And now in 2007 the programhas new links and new coun-tries.
