Wayfair Decision and its Impact on Printers

Do you ship, or drop ship to other states? A recent Supreme Court decision, South Dakota vs. Wayfair, means that remote sellers may be required to collect sales taxes in states where they do not have a physical presence. It’s not just the “big guys” who will be required to register in multiple states for sales tax assessing, billing, collecting and filing/remitting. Every state is going to make its own rules about when an out of state seller has to register with them. For those in Minnesota, the MN Department of Revenue is offering a webinar on October 10, 2018 at 10 a.m. CDT, addressing the Wayfair decision. They’ll cover sourcing local sales taxes, making sales on a marketplace, and give guidance on how to handle sales made into other states. They’ll provide instructions on registering and filing for Minnesota sales and use tax, and give valuable resources to help you meet your Minnesota sales and use tax filing requirements. PIM’s 43rd Annual Surplus Paper Drive for Teachers

The 2018 PIM Surplus Paper once again had 400 teachers that showed up at Lindenmeyr Munroe in Fridley on Saturday, September 22nd. It was an amazing crowd and we even have pictures to prove it! A BIG THANK YOU TO Lindenmeyr Munroe - the new host of the PIM Paper Drive!

The teachers, as always arrived prepared to load paper, and lots of it, into their, cars, trucks, U-Hauls, trailers and vans. Most schools came with multiple people and game plans to grab the most paper possible in the 3-hour time span. PIM Members donations really stepped up and there was enough product to go around. All the teachers that came left really happy knowing their programs could remain strong for 2018-2019 School Year! Learn More.

PIM member, Impact, a direct marketing services company located in North Minneapolis, is in the process of installing an 800 kW solar system covering roughly 2 acres on top of their roof. Half of the array is up and running, launched in an impressive ribbon cutting ceremony on September 26, attended by many city government and agency representatives, along with Impact leadership, Tim Johnson CEO, Mark Anderson, CFO, and Pete Studer, COO. In partnership with Greenway Solar, a not-for-profit agency, the array will power 50-60 Minneapolis low-income homes. The 2nd half of the project will generate power for Impact’s use within the building. As an early adopter of this technology, Impact seeks to share the benefits of their experience with other members in the Printing Industry Midwest. PIM will be following-up the project and its impact on the community and company, in editions of the Loupe magazine in 2019. Questions to Mark Anderson.

Printing Industry Midwest Safety and Environmental Recognition Program

MINNEAPOLIS, MN- Printing Industry Midwest (PIM) members have options regarding Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) recognition or certification programs. The most comprehensive, locally available and on-site program is the PIM Great/Green Printer program. This is a recognition program that PIM members have been able to participate in since the late 1990’s. This program addresses all EHS issues facing printing companies. A brief description of the program and the participants in that program can be found at www.pimw.org under the Environment and Safety tab. Those Great Printers value the expertise, safety and environmental advice and hazards reduction provided with the Great Printer certification.

The Printing Industries of America (PIA) offers a Safety Shield designation to their Best Workplaces in the Americas award program. The Safety Shield program assesses some of the safety requirements printing companies need to address. Printers’ Disability Trust (PDT) Trustees will be holding their Board meeting concurring with the SGIA Expo in Las Vegas in October and would like to invites PIM association members who are attending this expo and would be potential PDT enrollees to a cocktail party on Thursday, October 18, from 5 - 7 PM (The expo closes at 5 PM for the day). They would still have time for dinner, shows, etc. after the “Meet and Greet” cocktail party.

NEW Color Management Fundamentals course to the iLearning Center! Free to all printer members!

Printing Industries of America recently launched a new Color Management Fundamentals course to the iLearning Center this week. Presented by Joe Marin, Vice President of Education and Training, the course is available to Printing Industries of America printer members as a free benefit of membership. Effective color management produces more reliable, consistent color across multiple devices and allows everyone in the process to see color more accurately. It reduces rework and communication issues and produces better color more efficiently. Understanding the basics of color management is the first step for color success. This course will cover the fundamentals of color management, the requirements for success, and how it works-all while giving students a solid foundation of terminology and workflow. Learn More.

TAGA Call for Papers

The Technical Association of the Graphic Arts (TAGA) is seeking the latest advances in scientific research and technical innovation from the graphic communications industry to be presented at its 2019 Annual Technical Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 17-20. Scientific Papers are based on emerging science, technology, and the application of all forms of graphic communications technology. Technical Innovation Papers cover topics where a broad technology perspective needs to be provided. Papers will be selected based on submitted abstracts of 500-1,500 words and may include figures. Papers accepted and presented at the TAGA 2019 Annual Technical Conference will be published in the 2019 TAGA Proceedings. Submissions should be sent to TAGA@printing.org by October 5, 2018.
