Manitowoc County is home to a rich heritage and fascinating history. Between our two sites, the Heritage Center and Pinecrest Historical Village, the Manitowoc County Historical Society works to enrich the quality of life in our community by building connections to the past and providing interactive learning experiences.

The Heritage Center is home to the remarkable Civil War Flag of Company A, hosts our fl agship exhibit “What Makes Us Who We Are”, an archaeology exhibit featuring hundreds of Native American artifacts, and our Hungry for History series, which features an exciting educational program and a catered meal. Our staffed research library is available to researchers and history enthusiasts and features thousands of records, photographs, and books.

Pinecrest Historical Village, located just 3 miles west of Manitowoc on County Highway JJ, brings the past to life with over 25 historic buildings includes homes, a one room school, cheese factory, blacksmith shop, and locomotive. Daily visitors can enjoy our ‘Voices from the Past’ audio tour and school or community groups can schedule a guided tour. Families can enjoy our Children’s Discovery Village, which features a picnic area, play set, miniature historical playhouses and a wooden locomotive. The historic playhouses, a log cabin and a one room school house, include items for learning and role play such as school desks, chalk boards, a cook stove, kitchen items and a rope bed. See our calendar of events for our exciting line up of hands on history experiences.

A log house built in the old world style between 1855 and 1860 by Bohemian immigrant Joseph Kunze in the town of Newton. It was donated by the Robert Luebke family in 1976. Restoration was conducted by the Junior Service League of Manitowoc County. The Smokehouse is an original log smokehouse built in 1896 by Gustave Petzold near Kiel. It was donated by the Klich Family. Sponsored by the Service League of Manitowoc County.

This log house was built around 1851 by Norwegian pioneer Thomas Helle southeast of Valders. It was passed on to his sons, thus the originating name Tom’s son or Thompson. The building was donated by Michael Propson. It was rebuilt by Hugo Vetting and Al Bartel in 1972. Sponsored by Armond and Ione Kueter.

1 Welcome Center

Begin your journey through Manitowoc County’s past here at this Greek-Revival style farmhouse. The home was built about 1870 by Hiram McAllister on Plank Road, west of Four Corners, on a 178-acre farm in the town of Manitowoc Rapids. Hiram McAllister was one of the first farmers in the county. Subsequent land owners included John Landreth, Henry and August Eberhardt and Agon Haupt. Donated by Don and Richard Haupt and Evelyn (Haupt) Carstens families in 1997. Enjoy our local history exhibit before you begin your walk through Pinecrest Historical Village.

2 Sladky Bee House

This honey house was built in the 1920’s in the town of Shoto. It contains information on bees and honey production as well as beekeeping equipment such as veils, gloves, smokers, hives and an extractor. Sponsored by JoAnn Noffke in loving memory of her grandparents, Gustav A. and Emma Wicke.

3 Print Shop

James E. Hamilton, a native of Two Rivers, revolutionized wood type production about the year 1880. With Hamilton’s ingenuity small village print shops with wood type came to be commonplace. This shop is located inside the 1866 home of Ludwig and Elizabeth Sieker and their family. The building was relocated to Pinecrest Historical Village in 1979.

This replica of a country church yard cemetery contains authentic tombstones, including that of Civil War veterans Erick Olson of Cato and John D. Woodcock from the Town of Rockland. Many of the inscriptions are in German and Czech. There are no burials at Pinecrest. This Presbyterian Church, built in 1896, was formerly located on Highway 151 between Valders and Chilton. It served town of Rockland and Eaton settlers. It was moved to Pinecrest in 1972 and restored by the First Kiwanis Club of Manitowoc. It is available for weddings. Sponsored by John and Bernie Zimmer.

Originally located in Cleveland, Wisconsin, the Nennig Dance Pavilion was built around 1900 and hosted a number of picnics and dances. After being donated by Leroy Ertel, the octagon pavilion was moved to Pinecrest in October 2003. Today, the pavilion hosts the Manitowoc County Historical Society’s German Fest and Barn Dance. Sponsored by Cleveland State Bank.

This one-story frame town hall, built in the 1890s, served Two Creeks area residents. It was donated by the Town of Two Creeks in 1991 and moved in 1992. Sponsored by NextEra Energy Resources Point Beach Nuclear Plant.

This brick veneer building was built in 1926 for the Rockwood Volunteer Fire Dept. Donated by Vincent and Agnes Miller of Rockwood, moving costs were paid by the Manitowoc County Firefighters Association. Sponsored by Kaminski and Pozorski, Attorneys and Counselors.

This small one-story frame commercial building from about 1897 was once the dressmaking shop of Mrs. Francis Rank, one of the several seamstresses in Manitowoc at the turn-of-the-century. The building housed the Phalen Plumbing Co. from 1908 to 1964, then served as the Worthington Realty and Income Tax Service office until 1992. It was donated by the Capitol Civic Centre. Sponsored by the Florence and Leon Balaban Families.

This one-story general store was originally located in Clarks Mills. Built sometime in the 1870’s, the building features a boomtown facade, recessed doorway and hardwood floors.

14 Village Meat Market

Depicting a small town meat market, this exhibit was made possible by artifacts donated by the Dramm family and artifacts and funds from the Chermak family who operated a meat market on North 8th Street in Manitowoc.

This building served as the Newton State Bank from 1921 to 1942. Its interesting history includes an unsolved bank robbery during which the safe was torched with a loss of $4,000. It was donated by the Mid-Lakes Farm Service Co-op in 1982. The building is sponsored by Bank First National.

Built in the 1920s and used as a barbershop in Manitowoc, this building now depicts a law office of the early 1900s. Among the furnishings is the desk of Circuit Court Judge Schlichting. It is sponsored by the Manitowoc County Bar Association.

According to oral history, cheese was made in this building in the 1890’s by Tina Lulloff in the town of Schleswig. The building is sponsored by Pine River Pre-Pack.

This building was once a home built by Edward Fritzi in 1866. It was donated by the Carstens family in 1978 and depicts a saloon on the first floor. Sponsored by Saucy’s Sports Bar.

The second floor of the Saloon building is home to a doctor and dentist’s office.

This building originally served as a granary and farm storage building on a farm in Francis Creek. It was moved to Pinecrest in 1976 and converted to a blacksmith and wagon shop. Many of the tools and equipment were donated by the Anton Witt family who operated a blacksmith shop built in 1909 on Menasha Avenue at Four Corners in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids. It is fully operational with demonstrations each year. Moving and restoration was sponsored by the J.J. Stangel Co. of Manitowoc. The shop is sponsored in memory of Ambrose V. Kaltenbrun, Kaltenbrun Manufacturing Company.

This is a Soo Line depot built in 1896 at Collins. Passenger service ceased in the mid-1930s and freight in 1950. It was donated by the Clipper City Model Railroad Club. Sponsored by Collins State Bank.

The 44-ton steam locomotive No. 321, one of the first six-wheel switch engines, and coal tender were built in 1887 at the Rhode Island Locomotive Works. They were donated by Robert Miller of Milwaukee. The 16-ton caboose No. 99006 was built in 1886 by Barney and Smith of Chicago for the Wisconsin Central Railway, predecessor of the Soo Line. Sponsored by Suzanne E. Bare.

Built around 1900, this building served as a meat market in Valders. It was later moved and used as an office at Valders, then moved to Pinecrest in 1973. It depicts the harness and shoe repair shop of Wenzel and Ed Sykora of Tisch Mills. Basic equipment and tools were donated by Joyce Sykora.

Our newest exhibit, the carpenter’s shop is housed in the north end of our blacksmith shop building. The exhibit depicts the shop of a general carpenter and includes tools for barn building, cabinet making, and other standard woodworking tools.

This self-guided nature trail features a pond, native plants and trees, stump puller and the Village millstones used for grinding wheat into flour. The trail is a natural prairie, offering a glimpse of the landscape enjoyed by Manitowoc County’s first settlers.

Located on the old Green Bay Road, the Meeme House Inn began as a trading post handling dry goods, groceries, liquors, and tobaccos. Michael Herr built the original structure about 1855 as an inn, providing overnight board and lodging for weary travelers midway between Green Bay and Chicago.

The Meeme House was owned by the Herr family until 1906 when it was sold to Peter DeGrott. In 1909 he sold to Joe Schwartz who operated the establishment until his death in 1947. After Joe’s wife, Minnie, died in 1955 the property was passed onto their daughter Val who operated it until her death in 2012.

The next step will be to move the Inn, its original livery stable and historic poll house to Pinecrest Historical Village where the important steps towards restoration will begin.

The Niles Church, built in 1896 as the First Presbyterian Church, was moved to Pinecrest Historical Village from it’s original location west of Valders, Wisconsin.

Moved to the Village in 1972, the Niles Church is now used for weddings, meetings, and educational programs.

Nestled in the Wisconsin countryside, and surrounded by beautiful Pinecrest Historical Village, the Niles Church is the perfect wedding location. Our staff and volunteers work closely with the wedding couple to ensure a memorable and historic day.

Weddings are available on weekends from May 1st to October 24th. For more information, call the Manitowoc County Historical Society at 920-684-4445.
