STATEPOINT MEDIA
This summer, millions of kids willexperience the dreaded summerslide, described as the educationalground lost when young minds sitidle over summer.
Many teachers spend the rstfour to six weeks at the start of eachschool year re-teaching material stu-
dents have forgotten over summer, says Ron Fairchild, executive directorof the Center for Summer Learning atThe Johns Hopkins University.
To help your children avoid thisintellectual slump and give them anacademic leg-up come fall, keep themthinking over the summer by makinglearning fun. Here are a few ideas toget you started:
Educational OutingsBe sure your summer is lled with
outings that will jog your kids nog-gins. Museums, historical sights andscience centers are great combina-tions of learning and fun. Turn a hikethrough the woods into an opportu-nity to learn about trees and wildlife. If youre going on vacation, encour-age your kids to research the historyand culture of your destination in ad-vance. Remember, even a trip to theballpark can be educational. For apainless math lesson, talk stats aboutyour favorite baseball team.
Pen and PaperTheres no better time than sum-
mer to curl up outside or on an ex-tended road trip with a great book. You can instill a love of reading in yourchildren by arming them with botha library card and a summer read-
ing list. Be sure to visit your libraryfrequently to refresh their readingmaterial and help them get inspired. Most libraries host readings and bookclubs, and even offer free classes. Take
advantage of such programs. If its been awhile since your chil-
dren used pen and paper, have themkeep summer journals about theirexperiences. For those inclined to-ward ction, encourage them to usethe time off to write short stories ora novel.
Smart GamesAll those outings are going to mean
a lot of time in the car. Rather than re-peatedly answer the classic road tripmantra are we there yet? takeadvantage of the time together anduse it to play games that challenge
smarts. Brain Quest (www.Brain-Quest.com) for example, an educa-tional tool popular amongst teachers, parents and children, helps bridge thegap in learning from the end of one
school year to the start of the next.Consider using their card decks andworkbooks, full of curriculum-basedcontent, as they are easy to pack intoa hand bag or beach bag. You can eas-ily turn those long boring road tripsinto fun and educational bonding ex-periences!
I advise all my students to uselearning tools like Brain Quest onsummer vacation to avoid brain wipe-out and get a jump on next years ma-terial, says Kim Tredick, a 5th gradeteacher in Santa Clarita, CA, and the2006 Milken Award Winner. As oneof my students says its a rst classticket to straight As!
Keep your kids brains active over summer
LEARNING: A long vacation is no excuse to give a brain time off. Thissummer, turn down time at the pool and on the road into a learning experi-ence. (Courtesy Photo)

Osteoporosis in the NewsI have just started to write a series of articles on the head, headaches, etc., but something has come up that needs attention.
Osteoporosis is a serious health issue that causes lots of suffering and may compromise ones overall health leading to death earlierthan expected. This week in the news and in The American Medical Association Journal important information has come to light.
Bone is dynamic. It is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Somewhat like a home that needs maintenance, repair andremodeling all the time. The current medical treatment for osteoporosis is use of Fosamax, Actonel, and Boniva. These medicationswork by replacing part of the bone with an inert material which delays the break down of bone thereby slowing Osteoporosis(They do not build new bone). The unfortunate part of this treatment is that it is likely to cause a serious bone condition calledOsteonecrosis. This means dead bone. The problem lays in the fact that this inert (dead) material may make the bones more brittle
over time. The worse news is that this inert material can stay in the bone for 18 months up to 10 years.Up until now the recommendation was to start these medications as soon as possible to prevent osteoporosis. The word
Osteopenia was actually invented by one of the drug companies to identify individuals who were at risk for osteoporosis so theycould start using the medications sooner. Now the new information is that starting too early or staying on the medications for morethan five years increases the risk of fractures, especially ones that have difficulty healing.
For the last five years we have been warning people about the use of these medications. Natural treatment for Osteoporosis mustincluded exercise. I once saw a 14 year old boy with osteoporosis in his leg after a fractured leg prevented walking for six weeks. After just four weeks of walking, the bone was again normal.
Elimination of acid-producing foods (pork, pop, sugars, corn syrup, oranges, dairy products, potatoes, and tomatoes) is a mustfor treatment and prevention of Osteoporosis. An interesting statistic is that the three countries with the highest milk and dairyproduct consumption (USA, Australia, and Sweden) also have the highest Osteoporosis rates. Humm. Pasteurized, homogenizedmilk contains something called Xanthane Oxidase which is very acidic. Raw milk or cultured milk products are better. It takes 400mgof Calcium to neutralize the acidity in one cup of coffee. An acidic environment in our body speeds up the break down of bone.
Calcium citrate, 400-500 mg with Magnesium 200-250 mg, two or three times per day gives adequateabsorbable calcium. Vitamin D3, 2000-4000 units per day, is needed for healthy bone. There are many skeletalsupport products on the market for additional minerals. Bio-plasma is a combination of 12 Cell Salts, all ofwhich support structural tissues. Homeopathic Symphytum 30 C, one per week, will help heal any micro-fractures that are occurring. Homeopathic Calcerea Carbonicum 6C one per day with Herbal Hydrangea 2-3times per day will reduce bone spurs and enhance the deposition of calcium into the bone. All of thesethings support the natural production of bone and none interfere with normal physiology of bone. We havehad patients do the natural treatments and show from 3% up to 29% improvement in bone density in one
year.
If you are on the traditional medications, do not just stop them. Instead talk with your own doctor andcreate a plan. Consider using the natural supplements and dietary changes to fix this important health issue.
