Initial Pitch

Page 2: Pitch

ConceptsMy magazine will be a magazine which will focus on mainly rock and metal music containing a front cover, contents page and double page spread. My magazine will go up against existing magazines Kerrang and Metal Hammer. In my opinion, the publishers Bauer Media and Future Publishing respectively are staring to become outdated with their releases, and for years, have had absolute dominance within the field of rock and metal music magazines. I feel that it is time for a change of magazine company dominance within this category and my magazine will look at the genre of rock and metal in a different and more interesting manner, making it appeal to a teenage audience.

Masthead possible ideas

I have decided on using these particular fonts as they are all related to the genre of my music magazine. These fonts all vary and are examples of different colour schemes and font style. They include serif and sans serif font.

Magazines similar to mine…

In terms of magazines which are similar to mine, rock and metal magazines Metal Hammer and Kerrang! are the two magazines which share most similar aspects to my magazine. As well as sharing the same focus on genre, both Kerrang and Metal Hammer alike share a fairly similar price range to my magazine- one which is not particularly expensive as the target audience is late teenagers. In addition, the magazines also have a very cluttered and busy front cover with bright and vivid colours. The over exaggerated and fulfilled content of the magazine attracts readers to buy the magazine and can be used as a tool for reader attraction.

PriceIn terms of price, my magazine will have to be cheap so that it is affordable for the late teenage target audience. In addition to this, I must make sure that the magazine has a suitable amount of content within so that the magazine is of good value for money and does not un-attract potential buyers and or readers of the magazine. The price of the magazine will be around the range of £2-£3. My questionnaire results show that my audience will be willing to buy a magazine of this price as they feel this is an ideal price for a magazine.

Target AudienceThe target audience for my particular magazine will be late teenagers. The magazine will feature a main focus onto the male gender also. I have chosen to place the focus upon the male gender predominantly for my magazine as I feel that mainly, the male gender are more associated with the rock and metal genre of music which is the core focus of my magazine. The content of the magazine I create will not be particularly over analytical as I want the content to still be interesting and understandable to the teenage main audience. The pieces contained in the magazine will vary with each week to week release. I have chosen to change some of the forms of content each week as by doing this, it will engage my audience with new types of stories and idea, whilst also garnishing their attention still.

In terms of those outside of my target audience, I feel I will still be able to attract many customers outside of the range of the target audience as my magazine will always try to have different types of story and concepts all the time, therefore, my audience will always play the guessing game of what will feature next.

PublishingIn terms of publishing for music magazine, I will be choosing publishing company Haymarket to publish my magazine. I have chosen the company Haymarket to publish my magazine as they are renown for their major success within the magazine industry already. In addition, Haymarket are the major competition of my magazines competitors, Future Publishing. Therefore, it will create a form of intensity between the two brands, meaning the two companies will be doing the best they can to out-do one another. Also, Haymarket are a very well known magazine publisher. Their reputation is of very high standard within the industry and they will do the best they can to make sure my magazine is of great success.

Where my magazine will be sold…

I have decided that it would be best for my magazine to start off being sold in just local newsagents and corner shops for the first four months in order for me to monitor the exact amount of units being sold each week. If my magazine increases vastly in its popularity, I have decided that after those four months, I will look to also sell my magazine in music stores such as HMV, as well as look for it to be sold in supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda. Having a wide range of accessibility for my magazine is vital as it means my audience can buy my magazine at almost anywhere and do not have to necessarily go out of their way for it to be purchased, nor have to go to a specialist store.

Marketing/Advertising

In terms of marketing and advertising my magazine, I will choose a variety of large companies to help promote my magazine. Firstly, I will choose an artist and feature them in the magazine provided they talk about the magazine often over a small stint on their social networking sites. Secondly, I will advertise my magazine through vehicles such as buses in London as well as on the side of some taxis. In addition to this, I will advertise my magazine by handing out flyers in and around the city of London. By doing this, it will create a social awareness of my magazine, allowing the company name to be fully enforced to the public.

Unique Selling Point

The unique selling point of magazine is not one of great sophistication nor extravagance, however, I have decided as mentioned previously that my magazine will be ever changing with its concepts. I have decided on this idea as I feel that many music magazines of late are too one track minded, meaning that they have a lack of real ideas or originality. Therefore, I do not want to follow the footsteps of my competitors, but to out-do them by making my magazine always contain the newest and most exclusive: interviews, Q&A’s, quizzes, stories, reviews and news.
