Step 1: Choose your bathroom furniture

VANITIES, FURNITURE AND MIRROR CABINETS

• Choose your vanity first, this will set the colour and style for the complete bathroom.

• Understand who is using it now and in the future – this will help determine its key features i.e. single or double bowl (great for teenage daughters), wall-hung vs free-standing (visibility creating the look of space vs practical storage)

• Consider matching mirror cabinets for extra storage in a seamless look.

• Drawers in a vanity are so much more practical for storage and function.

Step 2: Choose your tapware

TAPWARE, SHOWER TAPWARE AND SLIDE SHOWERS

• Next decide on the style of tapware to complete the bathroom style proposed and complement the vanity.

• Understanding what water pressure you have – check out your hot water cylinder or consult a PlaceMakers team member.

• Invest in a quality tap, with running water through it at all times, it’s not worth the risk of failure. It will add value to your home.

• Shower tapware is the most important item in a bathroom, it gets used the most and often caters for all heights. Research your options thoroughly before deciding what is best for you.

Step 3: Bathing – bath or shower, or both

SHOWER UNITS AND BATHTUBS

• If the shower is the main feature in your bathroom, consider a tile shower option to fully integrate the shower into your bathroom.

• How much space do you have? Shower packages come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to work with every NZ bathroom.

• There are a variety of shower wall options for you to choose from – acrylic wall options can come with or without contoured liners for a complete storage system and easy cleaning.

• Feature vs function – and yes you can have both.

• Understanding who is using it, i.e. bathing for two; pre-school children to bath each night.

• Want to create a bathroom sanctuary – select a deep, bubble or hydrotherapy bath.

• Making a statement feature – consider a freestanding bath.

• Check out the maximum water capacity required to fill the selected bath, some designs are more thirsty than others.

• Ensure the selected bath style complements the overall home décor and not just the bathroom.

Step 4: Choose your sanitaryware

TOILETS AND BASINS

• Back to wall toilets provide a stylish look and easy to clean option.

• Comfort height toilets are a great option for all – especially tall people or the elderly.

• Wall hung toilets are a fantastic space saver in a bathroom (cistern concealed in wall) and an easy clean option.

• Toilet seats with stainless steel seat hinges provide optimum hygiene and longevity.

• There is a style and size available to fit any bathroom requirement.

• Complete your basin with a shroud, pedestal or chrome bottle trap.

• Check out the ledge space around the basin, soap and soap dispensers need a flat surface to stay put.

• Avoid square basins with flat surfaces inside the basin, they do not drain freely to the waste and require more cleaning.

Step 5: Choose your finishing touches

ACCESSORIES, ELECTRICAL, VENTILATION, WASTES, TRAPS AND TOILET SEATS

• Accessories complete the look of any bathroom, adding function in the form of ‘bling’ to the space.

• Can be the last product selection in a bathroom, completing the selected décor style.

• Be bold – look for feature pieces and multiply them, i.e. a row of three toothbrush holders.

• Mirrors are the best investment for any home and bathrooms just love them – the bigger the better.

• To reduce steam and moisture in a bathroom, select the right size fan heater and ventilation system, it’s all about moving the air around.

• Consider the elements of your bathroom when selecting bathroom electrical product i.e. room size, number of towels being used at one time and natural temperature of the room (cool side of the house vs large window with all day sun).

• Timers and dimmers are available to reduce power consumption during summer months.

• Consider where the heated towel rail is going to be installed. Each unit is certified and “zoned” for different installation positions in the bathroom.

• Heated towel rails installed too low will have towels dragging on the floor.
