This brochure provides relevant information about Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) for prospective employers. It

comprises a brief introduction of the Institute followed by descriptions of various academic programmes, profilesof current batches of students and a summary of past recruitments.

The placement of ISI students is facilitated by the placement committee. On behalf of this committee, we would

like to invite all prospective employers to visit the Kolkata campus to recruit students graduating in July/August

2013. Going by the latest trends in the placement of our students, it is indeed heartening to note that leading cor-

porate giants have been visiting our Institute regularly with employment offers for outgoing students of our Mas-

ters-level academic programmes [M. Stat., M. Math., M.S. (QE), M. Tech. (CS) and M. Tech. (QROR)]. Our website

(http://www.isical.ac.in/~placement) provides further details about course curriculum and other relevant infor-

    mation regarding placement opportunities.

Companies interested in campus recruitment are requested to send the ISI Campus Recruitment Form (preferably

with relevant company literature), duly filled-in, by email/fax/courier/post to the Convener of the Placement

Committee. Dates for campus interviews are fixed on a first-come, first-served basis. It may be mentioned here

that the Institute does not charge any placement fee. We also do not permit placement consultants or third-party

recruiters to conduct campus interviews. We look forward to formal feedbacks in the prescribed form, from com-

panies after their campus recruitment, as inputs for review of our academic and placement policies.

We do hope that this placement brochure will be useful to employers visiting the Institute. Any suggestion for

improving the brochure is most welcome.

    Introduction

    www.isical.ac.in/~placement

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), founded by lateProfessor P. C. Mahalanobis in 1931, owes its origin tothe statistical studies and research initiated by him inthe Statistical Laboratory set up in Presidency College,Kolkata. The Institute was registered as a learned soci-ety under the Societies Registration Act in 1932. Laterin 1959, the Parliament of India enacted the Indian Sta-tistical Institute Act, 1959, declaring the Institute to bean Institution of National Importance and empoweringit to confer degrees and diplomas In Statistics. The In-dian Statistical Institute Act was amended in 1995 em-powering it to grant degrees and diplomas in Statistics,Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Computer Sci-ence and such other subjects related to Statistics. ISIhas made some noteworthy contributions towards de-velopment of the nation. Formation of NSSO on thebasis of the proposal from P.C. Mahalanobis was animportant contribution to that extent. Also the second5 year plan was chalked out at ISI under the guidanceof Prof. Mahalanobis.

The Institute has all along been playing a pioneeringrole in theoretical and applied research, teaching andtraining, in the fields of Statistics, Mathematics, Eco-nomics, Computer Science, Quality Control, Reliability,Operations Research and other disciplines. It has madesignificant contributions to (a) statistical, social andeconomic planning of the government of India, (b)knowledge regarding statistical quality control andquantitative management techniques for industry, and(c) research and development in theoretical and ap-plied Computer Science.

In keeping with its pursuit of excellence in research, the

Institute has designed several courses of study to trainselected students in appropriate fields. ISI has beenrecognized as one of the pioneering institutes of thiscountry to introduce degree programmes in respectivefields. These programmes have always attracted someof the best talents of the country who have provedtheir worth in various organizations and educationalinstitutions both in India and abroad. ISI has its headoffice at Kolkata with centres at New Delhi and Banga-lore, where regular degree courses and research workin various disciplines are conducted. In addition, thereare several Statistical Quality Control and OperationsResearch (SQC & OR) Units situated in other cities ofthe country. ISI regularly takes up large projects fundedby public sector undertakings, defence, private sectorenterprises, MNCs, the UN and its specialized agencies,Overseas Development Corporations (ODC), UK, FordFoundation and other national and international bod-ies. Apart from these, software development assign-ments related to research problems from governmentbodies and industries are taken up regularly. The train-ing environment at ISI is designed to impart an optimalcombination of advanced theoretical knowledge andpractical applications. The students actively participatein the ongoing projects and are exposed to real-lifeproblems. The curriculum includes project work whichconsists of either solving real-life problems or develop-ing theoretical tools for a class of problems. Studentsundergo internship with reputed industries and re-search institutes. The institute is in constant touch withother leading institutions in the world through the ex-change of visiting faculties. This contact helps maintaina high standard of the training programmes.

    Introduction

The M.Stat programme of ISI is viewed as arguably thebest postgraduate degree programme in Statistics inthe world. This view is justified by the fact that peoplewith an M. Stat. background have been accreditedwith a large percentage of the sophistication that Sta-tistics has seen in the past few decades. The factorscontributing to this legacy are the quality of the stu-dents and teachers alike and the rigorous and in-depth course structure with its unique out-of-the-boxflavour.

Programme DescriptionThe M. Stat. programme is specifically designed to ad-dress both theoretical and practical issues and has theflexibility to evolve and change in response to new

    requirements.

AdmissionThe M. Stat. programme is run through two parallelstreams viz. the B-stream and the NB-stream. Gradu-ates of our prestigious B. Stat. course (the flagship pro-gramme of ISI) are offered direct admission to the B-stream while graduates in statistics and mathematicsfrom all over India are enrolled into the NB-stream areselected after a rigorous entrance procedure - a twotier subjective and objective assessment examination

    and a viva-voce thereafter.

CoursesSubjects covered in the first two semesters of M. Stat.include:

Regression TechniquesTime Series Analysis and ForecastingApplied Stochastic Processes (only B-stream)Optimization TechniquesMultivariate AnalysisDecision TheoryMeasure Theoretic ProbabilitySample Surveys & Design of Experiments.
