Principle

The mechanism is surface filtration. The slurry enters the frames by pressure and flows through the filter medium. The filtrate is collected on the plates and set to the outlet.

A number of frames and plates used so that surface area increases and consequently large volume of slurry can be processed simultaneously with or without washing.

Construction

It consists of different parts they are Frame Filter medium Plate

The plates and frames are made of steels, wood or plastics and polypropylene, stainless steel.

Filter Medium is composed as cotton, wool, asbestos, cellulose etc.operation pressure :75 to 100 Psi

•Plate has studded or grooved surface to support the filter cloth and an outlet.

•The filter medium is interposed between plate and frame

Page 6: Plate and Frame Filtration Final

filtration step slurry flows into the frame, through the cloths on two sides of the frame, then flow down through the channels between the cloth and the plate and finally, flows out.

• This is shows how the filter plate and filter cloth and frame plates fit together to form chambers for the solids to accumulate.

Plate and frame filter presses are dewatering machines which utilize pressure (60-80 psi, typically) to remove the liquid from a liquid-solid slurry.

They are particularly suited for low solids or solids composed of fines.

Large plate and frame filter presses have mechanical "plate shifters" to move the plates allowing the rapid discharge of the solids stuck in between them.

have the capability of blowing compressed air into the plate, to dry the cake, and to aid in it's discharge

The feed travels the path of least resistance (up between the filter plates).Which has filter media inserted between the plates and the void between the plates is filled with the slurry as the liquid passed through the filter media and travels up to the outlet port at he top of the plate.

cake washing step water flows from the channel on the washing plate, into the space between the plate and filter cloth, then through the cloth, cake and another cloth to discharge.

Advantages of plate and Frame filter press

1)Simplicity2) Low capital cost3) Operation and maintenance is easy as

they are no moving part and also filter cloth can be renewable

4) Ability to operate at high pressure in either a cake-filter or a clarifying-filter application.

5) Capacity can be adjusted by adding or removing plates and frames.

6) It produces dry cake in the form of slab

Disadvantages of Plate And Frame Filter Press

1)Improper washing due to variable cake density

2)Short filter cloth life 3)High labor requirements.4)Presses frequently drip or leak and

thereby create housekeeping problems5)The emptying time and the wear and

tear of the cloth results in high cost.6)Operation is critical as the frame should

be full, other wise washing is inefficient and the cake is difficult to remove.
