Platinum Gazette accidently stumbled on the huge traffic jam at the T-junction to Mototolo next to Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine. The newspaper’s reporter was on his way to attend an Aids Day celebration in the vicinity when it became clear that he was going nowhere. Quick questions to a number of people next to the road made it clear that something happened at Mototolo Platinum Mine, but no details were available. A company spokesman made it clear that a formal statement about what happened would not be issued, but it transpired from various other sources that the centralised management offices for the Xstrata managed chrome and platinum mines were apparently petrol bombed at about 04:00 on Wednesday morning. This happened from the veldt where the bombers could not be seen by security personnel. A Toyota Quantum bus was also burned at the entrance to Helena Mine. The traffic jam at the T-junction happened at about 07:00 when employees at various mines in the vicinity could not reach their respective workplaces as the situation at Mototolo was not fully cleared up. As far as could be determined, community members of Moletsi village in the vicinity of the mine have certain grievances against the mines and they allegedly also protested at the scene. Apparently no employees took part in the fracas. It proved to be difficult to gelt hold of the Moletsi group before going to press as more than a hundred individuals have been arrested for what happened at the mine. The details of their grievances was not known when the newspaper went to press, but the situation in the vicinity of the mine seemed to be peaceful and production was resumed.

2013 is not looking as bright as most people would like it tobe with possible job losses on the horizon.Especially the mining sector was hit hard with wildcat strikesduring 2012.This week Anglo American Platimum (Amplats), a unit of themining giant Anglo American said they’ve lost at least 191000oz, worth over 300 million dollars at the current spotprices due to the strikes. They also said that their businessreview will be published early in the New Year. It is widelyexpected that this will lead to shaft closures and job cuts. The review could lead to further social tensions in theplatinum sector’s areas of operation.Amplats spokesperson, Mpumi Sithole confirmed to themedia that the review will be presented to the Amplats’board in January and will be made public shortly after that. The strikes were not the only contributing factor towardspossible job cuts. Before the wave of violent strikes, thecompany started reviewing its platinum operations. Profitshad fell in the face of soaring costs and a weak demand forplatinum used to build emissions-capping catalyticconverters in cars. South Africa is home to about 80% of theworld’s known platinum reserves.Due to the strikes reduced supplies of South Africanproduced platinum lifted the metal’s price slightly. This couldhave a positive impact on profits and share prices ofproducers. The spot platinum price gained about 15% thisyear. Just before going to press the platinum price stood at$1604/oz.
