This Autumn marks the ninth year since the Mitsui Memorial Museum opened in Nihonbashi in October 2005. This has been made possible by the continued support and understanding of our contributors, partners and guests. We would like to express our deep gratitude for your kindness. This exhibition, “Noh Masks and Costumes: See/ Know/ Compare” is seventh in a series of annual exhibitions with the concept of “The Playful Art and Aesthetic Sense” that are held every summer.Noh is Traditional Japanese Theatre Art and tends to be considered complicated at first glance by most Japanese. This exhibition illuminates that unique Japanese aesthetic by presenting Noh masks and costumes from various perspectives such as shape and pattern, in order to comprehensively introduce visitors to the world of Noh.In addition, we are holding a special display: “Kabuki Costumes from the Mitsukoshi and Isetan Collections – Renowned Actors in Famous Scenes”. We introduce luxurious and splendid Kabuki costumes actually worn by renowned actors together with photographs of the plays. We hope these costumes and photographs transport you to the scenes as if you were actually watching those renowned actors. Finally, we would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to Isetan Mitsukoshi Ltd. and Shochiku Co., Ltd. for their generous support, and to all those who have contributed to the realization of this exhibition.
