Playing the British and Irish Lions
Teacher, Mr Adam McCormack, in a once in a lifetime experience, played against the cream of the crop from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, the British and Irish Lions last Tuesday fortnight at Hunter Stadium. The Hastings Valley Vikings rugby union skipper and halfback has been one of the stars for the NSW Country Cockatoos and was chosen in the Combined NSW‐Qld squad. Adam was put on the field in the last seven minutes. In this short time he saw plenty of action, stopping a try and turning defence into attack with two very good tactical kicks. We’re proud of you Sir!

Over the last Easter weekend Year 11 student Claudia McGarry played in the Australian Junior Open Squash Tournament. 280 players from all
over Australia took part in the tournament. After some hard matches including a 5 set second last game Claudia finished 6th. which is a tremendous achievement. Well done Claudia.
UBS LEADERSHIP
ACADEMY
Year 11 student Courtney Davison spent
five days in the first week of her holidays
participating in the UBS Young Women’s
Leadership Academy which was held in
The Women’s College at the University of
Sydney. Courtney was one of 50 students
selected for the academy from high
schools across NSW. Courtney said that
the academy was a full‐on week of
learning well suited to Year 11 girls looking
to complete the HSC in 2014. Courtney
commented that the sessions on goal‐
setting, self‐presentation and leadership
were excellent and that the whole week
was a great success.
NSW Country Schools Rugby Championships
Over the June long weekend, Jesse Wade travelled to Armidale as a part of the Mid North Coast under 16’s Rugby Union team to compete at the NSW Country Schools Rugby Championships. Jesse was selected for this team as a result of his strong performance at the Buchan Shield at Coffs Harbour whilst representing Kempsey High School. The championships are renowned for showcasing some of the best schoolboy rugby talents in the NSW country region with teams coming from Far North Coast, New England, Central North, Southern NSW and Mid North Coast. This is a fantastic achievement for Jesse, having only played a few games of Rugby Union and being identified by Australian Rugby Union staff, Harrison Witt, as having ‘great potential’. Jesse represented Kempsey High School and himself to the highest standard and Mid North Coast team management were incredibly impressed by his sportsmanship and performance for the team. Well done Jesse!
Year 12 SLR Canoe Camp
In week 2, Year 12 SLR and Drew Walsh (Year 9) gave up the comfort of their homes (and even mobile reception) to participate in a 3 day canoeing camp down the Macleay River. The camp was a ‘no‐frills’ trip with everything for the 3 days needing to be packed into a 65 litre barrel including, tent, sleeping bag, clothes, food and cooking utensils. The students and teachers launched from Bellbrook Bridge bright and early on Monday morning and made their way to Nook Bridge to make camp. Students cooked their dinners over a camp fire and Ms. Jackson put on dessert, her famous ‘Johnny cakes’ with nutella and peanut butter, which were a big hit! Tuesday morning the group had a cooked breakfast before packing down their tents and campsites and continuing the expedition down to Toorooka Bridge in time to set up camp before night fall. After two days on the river paddling the crew were very tired and had an early night to prepare for the third and final day. Wednesday morning saw the final stretch, the barrels were lighter as all the food had been eaten and the end was near. The group had gone two days without a capsize and thought if it was going to be anyone, it would be Colby and Tamara. To the girls’ delight, Kieran and Dreu, not long after leaving camp took a turn for the worst and flipped the canoe along with their barrels, providing some entertainment for the morning. We arrived at Temagog Bridge just after lunch and returned to Kempsey. A big thank you to David Duff, Brett Jones, Jodie Wade, Conrad and Simone Tamblyn, Kempsey Scouts for the use of their canoes, Ms Jackson for her expertise and hard work making this trip possible and the students for their outstanding behaviour. As you can see this camp requires lots of help from the community and without these people this camp would not be able to run.
Some memorable quotes from the camp: ‘Wasn’t Australia settled by Captain Johnny Walker?’ – Tamara Thompson ‘Drew, can I get bitten by Bullrouts up there?’ (Pointing up on the river bank) – Colby McMurrugh ‘No Colby, they’re a fish’ – Drew Walsh (Year 9)
Rock Climbing
The end of the Outdoor Recreation unit
of the Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation
course saw students undertake climbs of
varying difficulty at Centre of Gravity,
the indoor rock climbing facility at Port
Macquarie.
Creative Arts Excursion to Sydney A Feast for the Senses
On the 21st of March 46 Art, Drama and Music students headed to Sydney for the annual Kempsey High School Creative Arts excursion. Students saw a Jazz concert performed by current students at the Conservatorium of Music and a rock concert performed by the students at the Australian Institute of Music at which Glen Shorick of Aussie rock band ‘Little River Band’ (yes parents you may well remember them) made a guest appearance and sang two of his hits. Major Galleries and exhibitions were visited and students gained insight and inspiration from seeing the best HSC 2012 artworks at the ARTEXPRESS exhibitions at the NSW Art Gallery and the Armory. Drama students workshopped with a lecturer from NIDA at the Newtown School of Performing Arts. The Kempsey students enthusiastically engaged in practical experiences and showed their potential as young actors. In the evenings students were taken to two live plays with The Adams Family as the highlight at the beautiful Capitol Theatre. This year a very worthwhile tour of the ABC studios. The experience finished at the White Rabbit Gallery of Contemporary Chinese Art, where they were taken on an interesting and thought provoking tour of their current exhibition ‘Smash Palace’. The whole excursion was an incredible experience for everyone.
Regional Cross Country
Five students qualified to represent Lower North Coast Zone at the Regional Cross Country Carnival held at Lismore earlier this term. It was a great effort. Congratulations ! (Pictured from left to right: Ms Gilbett, Paul Osmond (14 years 18th position), Matthew Ashley (15y, 11th.), Jarrod Witheridge (16y 9th.), Jacob Mickle (14y, 30th.) and Jade Konieczny (14y, 23rd.).
Country Cup Rugby League
Kempsey High played three matches in the Country Cup recently.
In the first match against Macksville High School our boys opened the try scoring with a damaging run by hard running front rower, Sam Tribe‐Skinner. Not long after the boys were in again courtesy of a fantastic ball from Warren Cochrane‐Smith to winger Jake Davison, scoring in the corner. Kempsey High delivered a final blow with Jermaine Sines crossing the chalk right before full time to wrap up the game 16‐0 (2 conversions to Chris Holten).
The second match was against St. Paul’s College Kempsey and although our boys gave it their very best St. Paul’s ran out the eventual winners 18‐0.
In game three, against Melville High, our boys came out firing! The first 10 minutes of the match appeared to be anyone’s game with possession being quite even.
After completing a solid set out of our own half and gaining good field possession, Jermaine Sines was able to cross for a try under the posts. Near full time, a ‘shifty’ run from Melville High led to their try to tie the game at 6‐6.
In the final against St. Pauls, ‘Tall timbers’ Thanakorn Phakphai and Matthew McAllister really muscled up in defence and made the opposition question whether our Kempsey High line could be broken. Chris Holten provided great ball to the outside backs, creating several scoring opportunities out wide with flying winger, Jakum Cubby. St. Paul’s scored two back‐to‐back tries taking the score to 10‐0. Before the final whistle, a fantastic cut‐out ball from Chris Holten to Jake Davis scoring out wide. The game finished up 10‐6 with the boys making a huge improvement to their first game against the eventual winners.
