Bella Hardy's seventh solo album ‘With The Dawn’ – her first since being named BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer Of The Year in 2014– isn't just the latest collection of songs from this

prolific and ingenious artist. The album is an account of one year of her life, good and bad, happy or sad.

‘With The Dawn’ is a more intimate and reflective album than before. Working with producer Ben Seal, the arrangements are more instinctive, more reactive, as befits the mind-set that informed the lyrics. Vivid brass gives way to lonesome piano; choral voices peal; banjos emerge out of beats and blips. Elements of the initial demos, sometimes recorded into a phone as the thoughts occurred, have been kept giving With The Dawn its striking immediacy.

These are songs written on the road, full of that sense of displacement, longing and contemplation that all itinerant musicians know. On ‘With The Dawn’, Bella Hardy's soaring kite-like voice is married to lyrics that poetically question everything she's seen and done up till now; letting go of expectations, both other people's and her own. But with closing lullaby And We Begin there's a light at the end... or rather the beginning. Only one song didn't spring directly from Bella's year of touring and tumult. ‘Jolly Good Luck To The Girl That Loves A Soldier’ was commissioned by ‘Songs For The Voiceless’, a project which gathered the country's best folk artists to sing some of the lesser known stories of World War I.

‘Sanctitude’ is a concert film recorded in the stunning candle-lit setting of London's Union Chapel, where they were joined on guitar & vocals by The Pineapple Thief

frontman and songwriter Bruce Soord. Formed in Sweden in 1991 by Anders Nyström & Jonas Renkse, Katatonia stand at the forefront of the dark progressive rock genre. In September 2013 Kscope released ‘Dethroned & Uncrowned’, a reworking of the band's 2012 epic ‘Dead End Kings’ (originally released on Kscope's sister label Peaceville). ‘Dethroned & Uncrowned’ allowed Katatonia the opportunity to explore a more progressive sound, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the original songs. Katatonia took ‘Dethroned & Uncrowned’ on the road in Europe for the first time in May 2014 as 'Unplugged & Reworked'. The band presented an intimate acoustic evening performing tracks from the album alongside atmospheric classics from their entire career, stripped and reworked. Each venue on the tour was carefully chosen for its unique atmosphere. The 80 minute set features 17 songs across the albums The Great Cold Distance, Viva Emptiness, Brave Murder Day, Last Fair Deal Gone Down and of course, Dead End Kings / Dethroned & Uncrowned, including fan favourite 'Teargas'. The show closes with the sublime 'The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here' and a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering. Nosound have been regarded by critics and fans alike as one of the most interesting up and coming alt/art rock bands in Europe, inventively combining influences from '70s psychedelia, '80s/'90s ambient and contemporary alternative, progressive and post rock. Started as a one man studio project in 2005 by Giancarlo Erra, but has since grown into a five piece band, evolving into something unique, focused and powerful. The music is evocative and intense, with personal songwriting. Influences range from Pink Floyd to Brian Eno, from Porcupine Tree to Sigur Ros, passing through rock and electronic/ambient. In summer of 2014 Nosound were invited to perform at an extraordinary festival – the Starmus Festival to be held at the Teide Observatory on the island of Tenerife. This unique international astronomy festival was to bring together an array of musical talent from European opera legend Katerina Mina and the legendary Rick Wakeman and leading figures in contemporary science with talks from the likes of Brian May, Nobel Prize winners & cosmonauts with the Keynote speech given by Professor Stephen Hawking. It was here that Nosound recorded their forthcoming CD/DVD release 'Teide 2390'. year of writing and recording. Drawing on a theme of transience, the album explores non places, a sense of not belonging, the highs and lows of being on the fringes of

society and all the associated raw emotions. Inspired by folk themes from Eastern Europe, Africa, through to Latin America, ‘The Girl I Left Behind Me’ travels through diverse styles including gypsy jazz and Irish reels, with references including Buena Vista Social Club, The XX, Thomas Bartlett and Joanna Newsom. Whilst inevitably drawing on their own experiences as touring musicians, the lyrics borrow from Marvell, W.H. Auden, Ted Hughes and an 18th Century sea shanty. Their heritage and timelessness provide a shoulder for I.E.C.s explorations to lean on. Using traditional instruments in unconventional ways yields a fresh, contemporary counterpoint to the roots that bind them. Subbass accordions, prepared pianos, 16 part string arrangements and a large array of hand made percussion sections take the songs to Gullivarian lands whilst giving the sparser arrangements a contrasting home of their own. The acoustics of the Devonshire barn in which the album was recorded provides a unique sonic purity and unification. Sometimes decadent, sometimes introverted, ‘The Girl I Left Behind Me’ finds a place far from the madding crowd. In 2015, India Electric Company will be accompanying and supporting Midge Ure on the extensive 'Breathe Again' tour. and produced by longtime associate Zack G, the new record is a departure from previous Mantler releases, as it features Jay Anderson (drums) and Matt McLaren (bass) on all

songs but one, making it truly a band record. "The songs we recorded in the first session were older songs of mine - 'I Guarantee You a Good Time' and 'Uphill Battle' were written between 1999 and 2001; 'Eyelet' was initially intended for a solo Wurlitzer EP in 2006 that was never finished; 'Searching for a Song' was written in 2006 for the Friends in Bellwoods compilation, for which a different version was recorded; and 'Painful Spring' was written in 2008," said Cummings. "Between February and July 2010, I had a great deal of inspiration and wrote 'Hue and Cry,' 'Husbands' and 'Only Speak Your Name,' and completed three songs, 'Flower of Laughter,' 'Bright as Day' and 'Heed the Call.' My wife and I were expecting a baby daughter in July, and the feeling that swept me up during those months - happiness, hopefulness - poured through me into those songs." Two key members of Anderson and McLaren's band, Steamboat - Nick Taylor (guitar) and Christopher Sandes (organ) - are featured on Rosy Maze, which also showcases some ambitious string and horn arrangements. Toronto stalwarts Michael Davidson and Jeremy Strachan play vibraphone and saxophones/flutes (including bass and alto flute) respectively, the latter also providing the delicate string arrangement for the album's most epic track, "Heed the Call." revolutionary reinvented guitars with a boundary-bending melodic and rhythmic approach, ‘Slide Guitar Ragas From Dusk Till Dawn’ is an album of sublime and joyous

musical meditations. One of the uniquely poetic features of Indian musical tradition is the attachment of ragas to distinct times of the day and night. From the first crack of sunshine at dawn until diminuendo into darkness at dusk, and from twilight to the start of the new day, every fragile moment of earth’s daily passage is linked to a specific raga. It is believed that the melody and modality of each raga is at its most powerful when played during its allotted hour. On ‘Slide Guitar Ragas From Dusk Till Dawn’ Debashish Bhattacharya guides listeners through his sensitive exploration of raga rotations.

Debashish’s apparatus is his self-designed chaturangui guitar. The chaturangui is a Hindustani adaptation of the slide guitar with six primary strings, four supporting strings, two drone strings and twelve sympathetic strings creating tonal similarities with the Indian sitar. Debashish plays his instrument with a three-finger picking style derived from ancient practices of veena playing. The veena is an ancient predecessor to the modern sitar, distinct for its resonating gourd chamber, bridge and long neck. Debashish’s instrumental influences include sarangi player (and singer) Ustad Bade Ghulum Ali Khan and sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan. Later he formed a close relationship with Jodhpur-born guitar pioneer Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra. Debashish now considers Kabra his musical guru. Debashish plays ‘Roshni (The Light)’ on Kabra’s custom-made Gibson S400 guitar, top-layered with lines on his own gandharvi and anandi models. Suffolk born antique furniture restorer and musician Ady Johnson, almost lost both his livelihoods after severing two tendons in his barre finger with a chisel.

Fortunately he made a full recovery. Ady then decided to abandon the restoration trade and focus on a career in music.

In 2011 Ady debuted his solo album ‘Tell The Worry Dolls’. Rooted in folk, blues and soul but with an off-kilter pop sensibility, the predominantly acoustic album received critically acclaimed reviews and regional and national radio airplay. Ady has gigged relentlessly since, headlined many shows and festivals and supported a wealth of artists including Ben Howard, Willy Mason , Scott Matthews, Chris Helm (The Sea Horses) and Shlomo.

‘Jack The Ripper’ was first adapted for the musical stage in 1974 and featured a score by leading actor Ron Pember and book and lyrics by Pember with Denis de Marne. An original

London cast album of the show was produced but would remain unreleased until now. 40 years after the show was last performed in the West End, Stage Door is pleased to release the original London cast album, digitally remastered from the master tapes. The musical reconstruction of the incidents relating to the historic East End murders of 1888 was told through the company of a Whitechapel Music Hall, a device that cleverly presented an atmospheric commentary on the murders as opposed to a historic re-enactment. The production was first staged at London's Players' Theatre, opening on June 25th 1974. Theatre impresario Larry Parnes subsequently transferred the production to London's Ambassador's Theatre in September 1974 followed by the Cambridge Theatre in February 1975, earning a nomination for 'Best Musical' at the 1974 Evening Standard Theatre Awards. In 1979 Broadway producer Elliot Martin debuted 'Jack The Ripper' in the United States at Providence's Trinity Theatre. Today the production remains a popular choice amongst Amateur groups worldwide. Producer Manfred Eicher explains the genesis of the recording: “In conversation with András Keller [leader of the quartet] we envisioned a musical programme based entirely on slow movements. Together we began reviewing the recordings we had made over the last 20 years, juxtaposing works of different historical eras, uncovering correspondences between composers of the past and the present. “As a contextual frame for the project we decided to record the slow movements of Beethoven’s op.130 and op.135, added new recordings of Kurtág and integrated newer and older interpretations of Alexander Knaifel, Ligeti and Bach to the album. This personal selection of remarkable music documents the ensemble’s growth, always approaching the work with both integrity and imagination, rooted in the gesture of listening.” And Wolfgang Sandner concludes his liner note: “A wistful charm imbues this entire recording of pieces which, though not written together, seem to have been predestined for each other. The Keller Quartett was founded in 1987 in Budapest at the Liszt Conservatory of Music, where its members studied with Sandór Devich, András Mihály and György Kurtág. All three of these distinguished professors were mentors, and Kurtág continues to compose music for them. Besides the composers on this album, members of the quartet have also been heard on ECM recordings of Bartók, Shostakovich and Barber.

This live recording of J S Bach’s St Matthew Passion features the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and the group Concensus Vocalis under the baton of Jan Willem de Vriend. It’s a

performance that took place at the Muziekcentrum Enschede in April 2014. On 11 March 1829, almost 100 years after the work had last been performed, the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn conducted Bach’s St Matthew Passion in the concert hall of the Singakademie in Berlin. Although the previous conductor of the Singakademie, Carl Friedrich Zelter had decided the work was too difficult to be performed in public, Mendelssohn, who had been a pupil of his, had a different opinion. In 1828 Mendelssohn set to work on the score, making changes in line with the day and age and the instruments then commonly used. After its successes in Berlin the St Matthew Passion was performed in a number of German cities. In 1841 Mendelssohn gave a performance in Leipzig where he was then Kapellmeister, in the Thomaskirche, the church where the work had first been performed. On this occasion Mendelssohn again made alterations to the score, but fewer than in 1828/1829, and it is this version that is used in the present recording. This recording by Jan Willem de Vriend and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra follows their three CDs for Challenge Classics of all the Mendelssohn Symphonies (CC72543, CC72641 & CC72658). On this hybrid SACD the renowned family group the Kuijken Quartet, alongside cellist Michel Boulanger, performs one of the acknowledged masterpieces of the chamber

music repertoire, Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C major D.956. During his lifetime Schubert was primarily known for being a composer of lieder. Indeed much of his chamber music and several symphonies remained unknown when he was alive and were only published and performed later by others including Schumann and Brahms. One such piece, which is today considered to be amongst the composer’s greatest works, is the String Quintet in C major of 1828. It is a quirk of fate that this exceptional composition, written just a few months before the composer’s death, was unknown for an entire generation. First performed in 1850, it was only published three years later. Like Luigi Boccherini’s quintets, Schubert’s is written for two violins, one viola and two cellos, as against the customary two violas and one cello. This arrangement gives the work added emotional depth and a poignancy that is particular to this great composer’s music. The Kuijken Quartet is made up of two generations of musicians from the Kuijken family (Veronica, Sigiswald, Sara and Wieland Kuijken). They are joined on this recording by Michel Boulanger as the first cello. Whilst the Kuijken family name is generally linked with period performance practice, they are playing here on so-called modern instruments. Described as a “poet amongst pianists”, Artur Pizarro first encountered Rachmaninoff aged 6 when his grandmother gave him an LP of the First and Second Piano Concertos performed by Vladimir Ashkenazy: “I was left speechless by the sounds, harmonies and textures. I knew right away that I would have to play these works someday.” When he was 18, he first performed Rachmaninoff in public when he won the 1987 Vianna da Motta Competition in Lisbon. Rachmaninoff featured again when Pizarro won the 1990 Leeds International Pianoforte Competition which catapulted him to international fame. ‘The Life and Works of Richard Wagner’, directed by Carl Fröhlich, first released on 20th November 1913, now on a DVD complete with the music that would have been

heard at its first screenings before the First World War. It was the first ever ‘bio-pic’, and as such about who else but Wagner? What is extraordinary, however, is that it predates D.W.Griffiths and Birth of a Nation, usually described as the first ‘long silent’, at a time when most ‘silents’ ran for 10 minutes at most. Fröhlich’s film runs for over 80 minutes ! “Finding a good print of this hitherto elusive film took an enormous amount of time (and money!!). Although we knew that the star of the film, Giuseppe Becce, had also composed (actually, more ‘arranged’ the collected works of Beethoven, Mozart and even Wagner himself) a score for full orchestra to accompany the first screenings of this ‘silent film’, locating the manuscript of that score and then having the music especially recorded proved an even bigger problem. Fröhlich, the director, went on to have a chequered career. A member of the Nazi party from 1933, he was eventually appointed President of the Reichsfilmkammer, the Nazi trade organisation which controlled access to all film activities. At the end of the war he was arrested and, although de-Nazified in 1948, his studio having been badly damaged during the war never resumed production. His films were then confiscated by the Federal Republic !!! Becce, the composer, went on to write the scores for over 60 films, most famously The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Das Blaue Licht for Leni Riefenstahl. Unlike Fröhlich he survived de-Nazification but died, forgotten, in 1973, aged 96. No wonder it has taken me an age to get their film to its present state, but well worth the effort I believe. This 10-CD set presents benchmark recordings of five Donizetti operas: Lucia di Lammermoor, Anna Bolena, Don Pasquale, L’elisir d’amore and La figlia del

reggimento, from original albums of the 1950s in copies of their original sleeves. The performances feature high-class soloists and conductors, including Maria Callas,

Giuseppe di Stefano, Cesare Valletti, Alda Noni, Tullio Serafin, Gianandrea Gavazzeni and many others.

Gaetano Donizetti was one of the most prolific opera composers of the 19th century and together with Vincenzo Bellini the most important representative of Italian belcanto. His output influenced an entire century and even today no opera stage world-wide can conceivably ignore his most successful works. Five of his greatest operas are collected in this box of original albums recorded in the 1950s. The legendary soprano Maria Callas sets the standards in the set with her stunning performance in the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor under her mentor Tullio Serafin, alongside that of Anna Bolena at La Scala, Milan with conductor Gianandrea Gavazzeni. Also included are outstanding recordings of L’Elisir d’Amore, La Figlia del Reggimento and Don Pasquale which feature singers of the calibre of Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi, Giuseppe Taddei, Lina Pagliughi. Otto Klemperer - Klemperer Live in Concert £8.49


It is generally accepted that many of the greatest recordings of the legendary 20th century German conductor Otto Klemperer are taken from live performances, and on this 10-CD set he can be heard conducting many of the world’s best orchestras of the

time in some of these performances. Amongst the music here are major works by Schubert, Brahms, Beethoven, Bruckner, Wagner, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Mozart

and Bach. The life of the great German conductor Otto Klemperer was marked with struggle and tragedy. He began his career working in Prague, Hamburg and Strasburg, before being appointed general music director at Cologne in 1920. Later, as a result of intense hostility and the threat of persecution because he was a Jew, Klemperer decided to leave Germany and move to America, where he conducted orchestras in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. During this time as a long-term consequence of a previous fall a complicated but necessary operation on his skull was carried out, the results of which were partial paralysis of his right side, neurasthenia and a lengthy period of disability. After the war he returned to Europe to continue his career in Budapest, but on his return he suffered another fall at Montreal airport. From then on he could conduct only when seated.

This concert from September 1992, staged at the Town and Country Club (now Forum) in Kentish Town, north London, was promoted by New Musical Express, and ended Godard’s decade-long absence from music. It sees him backed by Edwyn Collins, guitarist with Scots band Orange Juice, and former Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook. In 1972, Lindisfarne topped the UK chart with the classic ‘Fog On The Tyne’ album. This 1990 performance in Central TV’s Nottingham studios catches the Newcastle folk-rock band just

before the departure of singer, mandolin and harmonica-player Ray ‘Jacka’ Jackson, who also played on Rod Stewart’s mega-hit ‘Maggie May’.

The original line-up of Jackson, Alan Hull, Rod Clements, Ray Laidlaw and Simon Cowe from 1968 was augmented by multi-instrumentalist Marty Craggs and bass-player Steve Cunningham.
