Presidents Trumpet October 2017This is always an interesting time of year for me. It seems like summer is over, yet somehow it

isn’t. I always hope car shows and events held now will be nice and cool, but it rarely works out

that way. A nice exception to this rule was the September Cracker Barrel show. Somehow the car

show gods smiled and the weather was absolutely perfect. This, tied with a very strong NTOC

participation level made for a outstanding event. Big thanks to Harat and everyone else who

made it happen.

Sheri and I just got back from a weekend road trip to attend the OCA’s Archway Chapter Fun

Zone Show just outside of St. Louis Mo. For me the best of both worlds since the show is held at

the National Museum Of Transport which has one of the finest collections of steam era railroad

equipment in the country and trains are my other big hobby. A great group of people there

made us feel welcome and took us to a cruise in at a Culver’s on Saturday night. (See photo on

next page)

Sounds like Kendall and Vince have the 2018 Zone Show preparations well in hand. It should

be a great event – everyone start blocking out the dates now to avoid conflicts. Be there or be

talked about….

Lastly, it’s State Fair time. See you there for the October club meeting and Corn Dogs!!

North Texas Mustang Club Cruise-In

On Saturday, September 9th, the North Texas Oldsmobile Club was the guest club for the North Texas Mustang Club’s Cracker Barrel Cruise Night. NTOC put in a huge showing with 16 cars. We were welcomed with enthusiasm and much appreciation by the Mustang Club, particularly after we presented them with Awards for Top Mustang and Top Ford. We have been invited to attend again any time. Of our 16 cars, six won their class and six received Class Awards. We also received an award for Club Participation. The full list of recipients is below. I’d like to extend a big thank you to Denise Camba who helped coordinate the event and Chris Dreiling who took care of the award plaques. Thank you to everyone who attended and represented NTOC and see you at the next one!

September 2017 Monthly Meeting

The September 2017 NTOC monthly meeting was held on September 10th at El Fenix Restaurant on Skillman & 635. President Joe Munoz called the meeting to order at 2:00 pm. Joe led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of America. Joe welcomed everyone and asked if there were any new members or guests present. There were 32 members present. There were no guests present, but Dan Marshall who has not attended for some time was present. Good to see you back Dan. Hope you make more meetings.

Joe said that he would like for all of the current NTOC business cards to be passed out by January of 2018 and that we would have new cards with the new dues listed on them by January 2018 meeting. He also reported that Bill Furnell has provided several NTOC rosters (1990, 2000, and 2005) to be used by Joe and Gary Thompson to contact previous NTOC members to encourage them to rejoin NTOC or to just find out their status as Oldsmobile owners.

Joe mentioned that he would prepare an article for the national club magazine based on the attendance and activities at the State Fair Car Corral Display on October 14. Glenn Hargrove volunteered to take pictures for the article.

Voting on the Proposed Bylaws Changes

Two of the proposed bylaws changes that referred to the Officer Policy Manual were tabled until a copy of the Officer Policy Manual could be located. Lawrence Dagate brought a copy of the NTOC Officer Policy Manual and delivered it to Joe. Joe said the policy manual would be reviewed to determine changes needed.

2018 NTOC Zone Show — Dates May 4, 5, 6, 2018

Joe asked for an update on the 2018 NTOC Zone Show activities. Vince reported that the event Chairmen had concluded negotiations with Tanglewood Resort near Potts-boro, Texas and the contract was approved by the membership in August. The room rates are $139.00 per night plus 6.0% tax and 12% Resort Fee. This rate includes two breakfasts for each room night. The contract also requires a $371.00 Group Booking Deposit which covers the fee for the room where the awards dinner will be held. Dis-cussion was centered on the remote location and where the nearest places eat other than the resort. Driving time is estimated to be 10 – 15 minutes from the resort, and the resort has various venues for eating.

Kendall has done a drive through the area and identified potential cruise route. He also developed a list of other area interests and businesses that will be available for participants. A couple of areas that were mentioned are Eisenhower State Park and the “Extreme Sandbox”. (I checked the reviews = 97 reviews all rated a 5 out of 5. Price ranges from $195 for 1 hour instruction and equipment use to $895 for 7 hours instruction and equipment use).

Harat said she is also open to other suggestions for activities during the event.

to enter and park in the display Car Corral. All Oldsmobiles must be inside the Car Corral by 9:00 am and will not be allowed to leave before 6:00 pm. Best advice is to arrive between 8:00 and 8:30 am to be sure you have time to negotiate the State Fair traffic. State Fair officials want the cars in place before all of the foot traffic starts. Passes were handed out at the Cracker Barrel, and the September meeting. For those who did not attend either the passes were mailed.

Cars do not have to be show cars, but should be clean and presentable.

The October club meeting will be held at the State fair Car Corral at 10:00 am.

NTOC 2017 Christmas Party Dinner and Gift Exchange

The 2017 NTOC annual Christmas Party and Gift Exchange game will be held on December 10 at the D/FW Marriott Hotel on Highway 114 in Irving. Make your plans to attend this really fun NTOC activity. Who knows, you might just go home with the best gift of the evening. More information about in next Rocket.

Discussion Related to NTOC PayPal Account

Joe opened the discussion about setting up a NTOC PayPal account. He reported that the cost would be approximately 2.2% of the transaction amount plus $0.30 per transaction. The funds would have to be deposited in a non-profit account, then transferred to another account for deposit in the NTOC bank account. After some discussion Joe called for a show of hands of members who supported the proposal. At this time more members did not support setting up the account than those who favored setting up the account. The proposal was withdrawn.

Treasurer’s Report

Cindy was not present at the meeting. (Another out-of-state road trip with Mike. She is really enjoying her retirement.) Cindy is working on the new roster and will distribute it as soon as it is finalized. Treasurer’s report. NTOC is financially sound and Helping Hands fund is $2084.00

Member Information

The American Legion group where Pat is a member has opened their facility as a shelter for about 100 people. They are providing food and other essential sup-plies for them. Gene Crowdis made a motion to donate $1000.00 from the Helping Hands Fund to the American Legion Post Number 658 in Houston for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, seconded by Stewart Stephenson. After brief discussion the motion passed.

Ken’s Corner

Joe brought a sectioned plastic box that he recommended could be used to keep small car parts from getting lost or mixed as you work on car restoration or just regu-lar maintenance. A good place to keep trim clips, small bolts, nuts, fittings, etc.

Gene Crowdis asked about a problem with his ’68 442 convertible. During the drive home from the Mustang Club Show they were caught in slow traffic on LBJ. The en-gine died and when he tried to restart the car nothing in the starter circuit worked. No solenoid noise, starter did not turn over, headlights did not dim, and the battery was not down. (Car is equipped with starter shield.)

After having the car taken home on a roll-back truck, 40 minutes later the car started fine. It has starts several times since that evening with-out a problem. Appears to be overheating of the starter or starter solenoid since that is the only circuit that was af-fected. All wiring to the distributor is good and disconnecting it completely did not keep the starter/solenoid circuit from working. First step in eliminating the problem is to replace the starter solenoid. The one on the car is the original part.

Safety Note: If you break down on the Dallas area highways don’t expect any re-sponse from the Dallas Police Department if you call 911. We, along with Bill and Pam

Furnell (’62 Starfire) were sitting in one of the fast lanes on LBJ. We called 911 to get help so we could move the car out of traffic and called 911. They took the information, but did not respond. Our AAA driver said only the Dallas County Sheriff’s Depart-ment will respond to this type of call. Fortunately for us a BIG fire truck came by and blocked traffic so we could move the car to the shoulder.

Meeting Info

October meeting will be at the State Fair Car Corral Display. Time 10:00 am. Normally a short meeting so members can enjoy the rest of the day looking at cars and enjoying the various State Fair activities and food.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY – October Javier Camba

We, along with Bill and Pam

to enter and park in the display Car Corral.
