FROM THE PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM DAY - TUESDAY MAY 7th Thank you to all families for their support on Tuesday when staff travelled to Ballarat to
participate in a Literacy Professional Learning day focussed on reading comprehension.
This learning will support our ongoing development of our literacy program F-6.
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to all children F-6 that participated in our School Cross Country last
Friday and then Grade 3-6 in the Sandhurst-Goldfields Cross Country held yesterday at
the Bendigo Racecourse. It was great to see so many CGPS students participating with
best efforts, enthusiasm and support for each other. Also thank you to staff that supported
children at school and at the Cross Country, with a special mention required for the
amazing work of Mr. McKerrow and Miss. Ennor in organising this huge event for so
many children and schools.
MISSION At California Gully Primary School we educate students to be lifelong learners and
well informed and productive community members who are well prepared to become
active, engaged and responsible citizens of the local and global community.

GRIP LEADERSHIP On Friday, 7 of our student leaders represented CGPS at the Grip Leadership Conference held at Bendigo
Stadium. With over 400 children attending it was a great chance to meet other student leaders, look a what
it takes to be a good leader and also think about possible projects that could occur at our school.
FEDERAL ELECTION - SATURDAY MAY 18th
On Saturday 18th May the Federal Election will take place. One of the polling stations will be at CGPS. It is a busy day with lots of people visiting the school to cast their vote. We are seeking parents, carers and friends to show their support by assisting at our Barbeque fundraiser. We are asking an hour of your time to help out. Please complete the form attached with the newsletter if you can assist.
NAPLAN Next week our Grade 3 and 5 students will participate in NAPLAN assessment. This testing will
occur Nationwide, and all students in these years will complete tasks on; Language Conventions
(Spelling and Grammar), Writing, Reading and Mathematics. Please remember that NAPLAN
data provides results for one moment in the school year and is just one aspect of the school’s
assessment and reporting process. We simply ask that children participate with a positive attitude
and best effort.
COLD AND FLU HYGIENE It is that time of year when colds and flu tend to be common around our community. Good health
hygiene practices can greatly reduce the chance you will get the flu or pass it on to others.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or elbow when you cough or sneeze.
Throw the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs can be spread that way.
Please discuss the above points with your children.
MOTHERS’ DAY STALL AND BREAKFAST Thank you to families that made the Mother’s Day stall held today such a huge success. A fantastic va-
riety of donations and gifts ensured there would have been many happy ‘mums’ on Sunday. A special men-
tion must go to those behind the scenes that organised the stall and also assisted on the day.
A friendly reminder that tomorrow morning we will be holding on Mother’s Day (and Special Friends)
Breakfast.

We have spent quite a bit of time inside over the past week because of the cold and wet weather. Despite this, we have completed a number of different activities. The children cooked eggs in bread twice this week and they were very popular. Construction and action toys continued to be popular with the children, with them creating interesting and exciting imaginary worlds with each other. The Shed was a new experience to many of the children as they played with the newly discovered toys, and we had a paper plane competition. When we could go outside, we played on the playground and made a number of new animal friends including moths and kangaroos. We finished our week with a movie, Monster House, which had us all on the edge of our seats.
Have a great week,
Josh

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 46 KIDS LIKE TO BE INVOLVED Involve your kids in the kitchen. They’ll be more interested in what they eat if they have a part in selecting foods and preparing them. .It provides the perfect opportunity to teach them about different foods and how you can prepare them. You can get them to find out more about food from different cultures and to come up with a menu you can work on together.
What you can do NOW Give your child recipe books as gifts and encourage them to
try out some recipes. Plant a vegetable or herb garden with your child and get them
to tend it. They can pick the vegetables and herbs for some super fresh meals.
Good Idea!
Once a month, have a ‘different culture night, and invite your kids to come up with the menu and the appropriate setting of the table.
Top Tip
Kids can help out by: scrubbing carrots; peeling potatoes; setting the table; making the salad; breaking eggs for scrambled eggs or omelettes; and cooking simple dishes like scrambled eggs.
Drinks for Kids
There are many opinions regarding the best beverage choice for your child, whether
it be water, milk or 100% fruit juice. However, nutritionists across the globe all agree
that water should always be your first choice when selecting a thirst quenching drink.
Why?? There are many benefits to drinking water including:
It does not cause dental caries
It is thirst quenching
It has no energy or kilojoules and no caffeine
It prevents dehydration
It costs nothing
Dehydration is a major issue for children; they can easily become
dehydrated because they haven’t developed thirst signals. Children need to
be encouraged and reminded to drink throughout the day.
Other drinks such as cordial, soft drinks and fruit juices are high in sugar and promote dental
caries. Juice contains natural sugars that is concentrated, while soft drinks and cordials have
added sugar.
Milk should be encouraged as a healthy beverage. Choose low fat, plain milk types for strong
bones. Try dairy smoothies, e.g. banana smoothies, or milkshakes and warm milk with Milo.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
