EVERY DAY COUNTS - SCHOOL ATTENDANCE We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great edu-

cation begin with students coming to school each and every day.

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a

fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed

more than a year of school.

If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know

so we can work together to get your child to school every day. In some circumstances it

may mean an Absence Learning Plan is completed and implemented in consultation be-

tween the teacher, parent and child.

Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school,

there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind. Remember, every day

counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as pos-

sible.

REMINDERS STUDENT PERSONAL POSSESSIONS Like all Government schools in Victoria, California Gully does not have insurance. From

time to time students will bring items of value to school to show their friends and these

valuable items can easily get lost. Please encourage your children to leave valuable per-

sonal possessions at home.

LABOUR DAY HOLIDAY A reminder to parents that Monday 13th March is a public holiday and the school will be

closed. Have an enjoyable long weekend and if you are travelling please do so safely.

RIDE TO SCHOOL Ride to School Day is on Friday 17th March. We encourage our students to be active, so

hop on your bikes, scooters or walk to school and be part of the fun. Remember if you are

riding to school you need to wear your helmet and stay safe.

LEARNING CLUB Learning Club recommences next Tuesday 14th March. The sessions start at 3.15 p.m. and

conclude at 4.45 p.m.

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE Our OHSC numbers have increased significantly since the beginning of the year. As a re-

sult, even if your child is booked in permanently you must inform us if your child is NOT

attending the OHSC program at the earliest convenience. This will potentially free up a

spot for another child who uses the program occasionally. In relation to occasional users it

is important when possible to book your child in early (this is sometimes difficult I know)

this will enable us to allocate a space for your child. Or in the unfortunate position we

have reached our capacity give you plenty of time to find alternative care arrangements.

SCHOOL COUNCIL Our next council meeting for 2017 will be our Annual General Meeting (AGM), to be held

on Monday, 20th. Our March General meeting will follow.

California Gully Walk and Ride to School – March 8, 2017

Can we improve our walking and riding numbers?

It is good to see children walking and riding to school. It would be great if we could en-courage more of our students to walk or ride to school. Remember that you can walk part way to school as well if you live too far from school to walk the whole way.

National Ride to School Day is Friday, March 17

The Good Friday Appeal is a unique fundraising activity that brings together people from all parts of the commu-nity in a very special way. The common goal is to raise money for The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, and to ensure that all children with life threatening illnesses receive the best possible medical and clinical care.

It all started in 1931 when groups of journalists from the Herald & Weekly Times organised a sporting carnival in aid of charity, the Children’s Hospital being a recipient of the funds. In 1942, Sir Keith Murdoch as Managing Director and Editor the “The Herald” agreed that “The Herald” and radio station 3DB should broadcast an all day Appeal on Good Friday. In 1957, Channel 7 joined the Appeal and began the first daylong telethon, which is now held at Melbourne’s Telstra Dome.

School’s have been involved in the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal through the distribution of Appeal envelopes (attached to last weeks newsletter). Here at California Gully Primary School we are proud to continue supporting the Appeal; many of us know or will know of a child who has had to spend time in the Royal Children’s Hospital.

If you would like to show your support for this worthwhile charity, you can do so by returning the donation enve-lope by Wednesday March 22nd. Donation envelopes can be left with Nicole in the school office.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 13. HEALTHY MESSAGES HAVE TO BE REINFORCED Although you serve a s good role model to your kids by eating well and being physically active, they will sometimes spend time with other people, such as grandparents, aunts and uncles, or other carers. It is important tat you let these people know that you want your kids to get some physical activity and to eat nutritious foods., Sometimes relatives and others can have the best intentions for kids, but they think that it won’t hurt if kids eat lollies and indulge in fizzy soft drinks, for example. Their attitude is that ‘it’s a treat for the kids’.

What you can do NOW When family and other people are taking care of your kids: Let them know what you prefer the kids to eat. Tell the carers that you value their time with your kids and that

you’d like the heathy messages you give at home to be rein-forced by them.

Good Idea!

When others are looking after your child, reinforce your message by packing a bottle of water together with a few healthy snacks, such as carrot sticks with hummus dip, a reduced –fat cheese and cucumber sandwich, or pieces of fruit.

Top Tip

Adults can learn from their kids too. Encourage your child to spread the word out-side your home on healthy food and healthy fun.

Take fresh wholegrain bread or rolls, lean

meat and a variety of salad items, e.g.

lettuce, tomato, cucumber or boiled eggs

to make up nutritious salads. Many parks

provide barbeque facilities so take

advantage of this by bringing along some

home-made hamburgers or sausages or

perhaps tofu and vegetable kebabs.

Combine these with a cold pasta or po-

tato salad and enjoy a fun Aussie outdoor

get-together.

TIP: Make sure you

take an insulated

container and ice pack

to keep foods cool

and safe.

TAKE A PICNIC TO A PARK,

GARDEN OR TO THE BEACH!!

This time of year provides a fantastic opportunity to visit one or many of the

parks, gardens, beaches or other open spaces around your local area. Get

family and friends together, pack up a picnic and step out of the house to explore

some of the beautiful Australian scenery that we live in. Plan to leave the car at home and

walk or cycle to your local open space to fill your body with fresh air.

Potato-Apple Salad 3 medium peeled potatoes (boiled & cut into

3cm blocks)

1 large apple (peeled & cut into 1cm blocks)

1/2 cup chopped celery

4 spring onions finely chopped

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1/4 cup low fat natural yoghurt

1/4 cup low fat mayonnaise

2 tbsp fresh chopped dill

Combine potatoes, celery, spring onions and

apple together and toss with lemon juice. Mix

yoghurt, mayonnaise and chopped dill together

and fold into potato mixture. Chill until ready to

serve and enjoy!

The community breakfast pro-gram will continue tomorrow, Friday March 10th at 8 a.m. (please note that we will stop serving breakfast at 8.20a.m. any children who arrive after 8.20 a.m. will miss out). Sharing in breakfast together , what a great way for our school community to start to start the day!

HEAD LICE Back to school for another year and unfortunately this often means the start of the head lice season too. We see an in-crease in the number of head lice cases in the February to March period, particularly amongst school aged children. Head lice are extremely contagious. Early treatment is recommended to kill head lice and their eggs and to lim-it school and family contamination. 95% of lice are transmitted through close head to head con-tact and by sharing objects such as hats, hair brushes, head bands, pillows and towels. Ensure that you and your household is protected from head lice this season by taking the necessary preventative steps to keep head lice away; Below are 4 crucial steps to keep your school head lice free:

Avoid sharing clothing, especially hats, ribbons, head

bands and helmets

Discourage children from playing with each other's hair

Don't share brushes, combs, towels and pillows

Keep long hair plaited or firmly tied back to prevent con-

tact from other kids The above tips will help limit the outbreak of head lice at your school.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!

MacDonald's Nursery will be supporting the Garden Releaf program in 2017, with the day set for Sunday March the 19th. Focusing on the benefits of plants and gardens to enrich our lives. The aim is to encourage people to get out into their garden and get planting – or take someone to a garden to just enjoy. As it is also National Blueberry day on the same day, MacDonald’s Nursery are giving Schools a chance to win a Blueberry in a large Terracotta pot along with a $100.00 nursery voucher. We are registered for this competition and encourage parents, grandparents and family friends of our students to shop at MacDonald’s Nursery between the 18th and the 26th of March. Then drop their receipt into the box. The school with the greatest percentage of receipts to student ratio wins. We regularly purchase seedlings for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gar-den at MacDonald’s Nursery so we encourage all families to support this business who support California Gully Primary School.

For the fair to succeed we need all families to get involved. Starting with donations for the showbags — these take some time to put together so all donations are needed now!

All classes are contributing to the school fair. Your child’s class-room teacher will let you know what they need in a separate note in a couple of weeks..
