SENIOR SCHOOL, Mr Steve Treloar

ACTING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL, Mr Phil Deroost

YEAR 12 BALL - Danielle Kitchen and Mackenzie Campbell The 2016 Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Ball was held on 20 February and was a very successful evening. From Glitz and Glamour to sharp and handsome, the students of Year 12 did not disappoint! The dance floor was on fire and Mr Kosicki was busting some killer moves. The food delivered by Palmers was a hit with all the students and teachers who attended the event. On behalf of all the Year 12 students and parents, we would like to thank everyone involved in organising this wonderful event! It was a night to remember! And also a huge thank you to Palmers, for hosting our crazy year! YEAR 12 LEADERS CAMP - Regan O’Callaghan On the 23 and 24 of February, the Year 12 Leadership Group along with Mr and Mrs Treloar, went to the Explorus Adventure Camp in Karridale. Here we participated in numerous team-building challenges to further develop what is already a strong and cohesive group. All the activities were fun while being physically and mentally challenging. The main favourites were the low ropes course and the crocodile game; where we came up with some very creative ways to solve challenges, and the monumental face plant by Dana and army rolls by Danielle and Kelly. We faced our natural fear of heights on the high ropes course, putting our trust in our partners on the ground holding our safety lines. Overall the camp brought us even closer together as a team (not so much just a group anymore). With encouragement and support from each other, like demonstrated on the camp, I think we will be an unstoppable force this year for the school community. Year 10-12 Camps – forms and information have been distributed for all these camps. Please ensure that your child’s permission forms with medical information (and other “special” items for Year 12 Retreat) are returned as soon as possible. Please note that all camps are costed based on full student attendance, so students not attending will still incur charges. Family holidays do not count as valid reasons for exemption from school camps. Please contact the relevant Camp Coordinator if you have any queries or special needs regarding your child’s camp.

CAFÉ

SWIMMING CARNIVAL This coming Wednesday is the Secondary School swimming carnival at the Geographe Leisure Centre. It will be a great day with the emphasis being on participation and earning points for your house. Just a reminder that it is a compulsory school day. I hope parents can come down and cheer on the students competing. OLNA OLNA is fast approaching with only one and a half weeks away before the writing test. A letter has been given to each student required to sit these assessments outlining the times and rooms they need to go to on the day. Make sure that laptops are charged when arriving at school on these days and if you are going to be absent to let your homeroom teacher know so we arrange a make up test. Please note that the writing test is only open to us from 8 to the 11 March so if you miss these dates you will need to take the assessment in September. NAPLAN The deadline for parents wishing to withdraw their child from the upcoming NAPLAN assessments is 8 April. Please complete an exemption form available from reception or inform Mrs Victoria Kearns in the front office if you wish for this to occur Have a great week everyone and go Eagle in the swimming carnival!

From Monday 29 February, School Special 742 will be departing five minutes earlier in the morning to improve the time that the bus arrives at Georgiana Molloy Anglican School. This means that the bus will depart the first stop (Stop No: 70878 – Layman Road after Sandilands Bvd) at 7:40am. The later arrival times of the bus this term have been as a result of road works in Busselton, however the PTA would like this service to be scheduled to arrive ten minutes before the bell as well. There is no time change to the afternoon School Special 742 service.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE! BUS INFORMATION

MIDDLE SCHOOL, Mrs Lisa Ness

KELLY-ANN MCDONALD

Interesting Fact - I’m a Christian and I was originally born in New Zealand but moved to Australia 8 years ago. I enjoy any outdoor activities as well as Dancing, Horse Riding and Singing. What is your role as a leader? Hamelin House Captain What are your main goals for this year as a leader? To encourage participation and house/school spirit in all areas of the school community. Why you chose to be a leader? To have the opportunity to give back to the school and hopefully help give

voice to students wants and needs. What portfolio have you been given? Arts Portfolio What does this portfolio cover/what will you do? As the Arts Captain, I will be helping at and attending arts evenings as well as being in charge of ideas and issues that relate to art, drama and music.

SCOTT ROBERTS

I was born in England in 1998 and at the age of 3 immigrated to Australia with my mum and dad. I attended the 2015 Cambodia service trip which was a great experience and am the Head Boy for 2016.

My main goal as a leader this year is to try and increase the inter-house competitive spirit. I have the Student Welfare Portfolio which covers the development of programs to help the general well-being and welfare of the student body at GMAS.

Thank you to the parents who came along to the Year 7 & 8 Parent Information evening and I hope you found the information valuable and made the most of the opportunity to meet your son/daughter’s Home Room teacher.

Last Thursday all Year 7 & 8 students were fortunate to spend time listening to and enjoying a performance by Scott Darlow. The key message of his presentation was to challenge students to live by the acronym – FLUTE – forgiveness, love, understanding, tolerance and empathy. I hope everyone took something worthwhile from the presentation and take on the challenge presented to them. On Monday all Middle School students participated in study skills workshops presented by Elevate Education. The feedback received from students and staff is very positive and students were well engaged with

the young presenters who are all currently studying at university and had some very useful tips on how to kick start their study skills, better manage time and use memory mnemonics.

JUNIOR SCHOOL, Mr Rob Whirledge

How fortunate we are that our children are able to express themselves and excel in so many different ways. This week, we have been able to recognise many different qualities: Our high achievers within the classroom were presented with Merit

Certificates at assembly for their distinguished acts. Quiet Achiever Awards were presented to students throughout the Primary

School. They had demonstrated quiet perseverance in all that they do while at school.

Our talented swimmers were recognised on Wednesday at the Swim Carnival, receiving ribbons, medals and trophies.

Throughout the year, there are many qualities that we are able to celebrate and reward. While it is important that we recognise these achievements, we must also not lose sight of the huge potential in each and every one of our students. As a school we must value every individual and ensure they have the opportunities to be the best they can be. We should place greater emphasis on the effort and less on the outcome; for those that learn to work hardest towards a goal are usually more likely to achieve success. Many thanks to Mrs Kammann (Miss Reynolds) for another wonderfully organised Swimming Carnival. Those that stayed until the end were rewarded in taking part in the novelty race, undoubtedly the highlight of the day – wonderful to see so many smiles and so much laughter. I encourage all parents and children to remain for the final presentations for all carnivals, in order to celebrate our successes together. Thanks also to our wonderful Swimming Club for their catering at the pool; I loved my burger! Finally congratulations to our Year 3 soccer players and our Junior School Tennis Team who were in action this week. Almost 20 soccer players took to the turf, at NIB Stadium in Perth, over the weekend. They received a huge roar from almost 13,000 fans on the night (I concede that several spectators might have been there to watch Perth Glory beat League Leaders Brisbane Roar 6-3). Thanks to Geoff Wright and Val Best for making this special night possible. Then on Monday, a small number of tennis players ventured to Bunbury with Mrs Mahoney for a tournament, many competing for the first time. They all had fun and will have benefited greatly from this experience. Just another standard week at GMAS!

EARLY CHILDHOOD, Mrs Kath Campbell

ENRICHMENT, Dr Linda Mosen-Lowe

Week 4 already!! Wow, where does the time go? Students have settled in well to their new classes and are full steam ahead into their learning. Teachers are busy completing Settling In Reports which will go home later in the term. Interviews will be made available through the PTO system online for you to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss these reports if necessary. The report will provide a snapshot of how your child has settled into the new school year with English, Mathematics and Pastorally. The Pre-primary and Year 1 students have continued completing the On-Entry Assessment Program this week. The assessment provides a baseline for the student’s literacy, numeracy and phonological awareness skills. The online assessment is in its second year for independent schools and GMAS are continuing their participation as a trial school. The assessment diagnoses individual student work and provides data on areas students are achieving well in and identifies areas where they need further development. It also assists in predicting future performance for identifying individuals who might benefit from early intervention. This information is rich and assists in the classroom program planning. By the end of the assessment period, all teachers will have sat one-on-one with each of the students in their class. Please note that all playgrounds are out of bounds before and after school, even with parents supervising. This is a school rule and is a duty of care issue. There is not staff supervision during these times; so ALL children must stay off the equipment. Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter. Unfortunately a return to school also means a return of bugs and germs in our classrooms. We have had a case of hand, foot and mouth in the EC, as well as gastro. Please take note of the following: Hand, Foot and Mouth: This disease is caused by the coxsackie A virus. The virus is in fluids from the nose, mouth and chest, and spreads when children sneeze and cough, or when they touch the fluid inside the blisters. The virus is also in the poo of infected children. Hand, foot and mouth disease is very contagious among groups of children, but it’s usually a fairly mild and harmless infection. This disease has nothing to do with animal foot and mouth disease. You can’t get it from animals. Outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease typically happen in summer and autumn, and mainly affect preschool children. The incubation period is 4-6 days – that is, the virus infects your child 4-6 days before you see any symptoms. Your child might have a mild fever for a day or two before the other symptoms appear. Small mouth ulcers usually appear first on the cheeks, gums and sides of the tongue. Your child might also complain of a sore mouth or throat, or just go off food and refuse fluids. Your child might also have a headache and aching muscles, or complain of mild stomach pain or nausea. Small blisters also appear on the hands and feet, usually on the palms and soles. Tiny red spots might appear on your child’s bottom, but these usually don’t form blisters. The rash usually clears up after 7-10 days. Your child is infectious until the blisters are gone. Gastro: Exclude for 24 hours after diarrhoea and vomiting have ceased.

Reading Support Program – Parent Volunteers Required This year the Enrichment Department will be continuing with its successful Reading Support Programs, currently run by Mrs Kerri Peters in Years 1 and 2 and Miss Lisa Basell in Years 2-6. The Reading Support Program provides students who struggle with their reading skills and gives additional support in developing their reading confidence and fluency. Currently we have large group of students who require support. The Enrichment Department are looking for parent volunteers who would be able to support this program by listening to students read. In order to provide consistency, we would prefer volunteers to commit to a minimum of a 10 week block (one term). The times we require volunteers are from 1.10-3.10pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays and 1.10-2.10 on Tuesdays. If you have some spare time to volunteer to assist in the Reading Support Program, please contact me by email: [email protected] or Lisa Basell [email protected] or via the School reception 9752 5252. Your input will provide valuable support to these students and highlight the importance and enjoyment of reading.

TENNIS NEWS, Mrs Kelly Mahoney & Ms Georgia Broad

Two GMAS teams competed at the Bunbury Tennis Club against quality competition from Donnybrook and Bunbury Grammar on Monday. We showed excellent sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the day. Players got a chance to improve their skills and learn the Fast 4 Tennis format. The GMAS 1 team finished 3rd in the competition and GMAS 2 finished the day 5th. Congratulations to all players, you all put in a tremendous effort. A big thank you to Tara and Annette, two parents who assisted with transport and scoring during the day.

There will be no tennis training for the rest of this term. Information will come if availability allows us to run tennis training in term 4 this year.

Bunbury Sunsmart Schools Tennis Classic On Tuesday the 23 February Miss Broad and Mr Ducasse took 7 teams consisting of 4 students each ranging from years 7-11 to compete in the Sunsmart Schools Tennis Classic in Bunbury. It was a great day jampacked with some great tennis skills and great weather! All teams played very well and our Junior girls team consisting of Hannah Bowden, Chloe Fraser, Megan Roberts and Maggie Millington won their division! Excellent work by the girls and they will now head off to Perth at the start of April for the finals. Looking forward to next year as we are fortunate to have some boys who are tennis stars in Year 7 and 8.

Auditions are well underway for this year’s school production of:

GET SMARTER - the spy musical. Meet Mac Hunter, a shabby, down on his luck PI. He’s street-wise and wise-cracking and he's on the case of his life. Could this finally be his ticket to the good life? Enter Violet Strange; street-wiser and wiser-cracking journalist. Only by joining forces can they outwit their growing number of adversaries as they trip around the globe in search of the kidnapped professor, missing Chicago street-kids and - can they find the Princess of India before the meglomaniac Carla? They get more than they bargain for as they tango in Casablanca, slap-dance in Geneva, carnival in Rio and enter a mysterious world of ancient Chinese intrigue in Macau. This show takes a look at the sleazy side of a PI's life, with action, danger aplenty, slapstick, dames, crooked cops and corny gags.

I am thrilled at the number of students wishing to win a lead role this year. Over fifty from Years 7 to 12 are prepared to audition. Remember, it is not the end of the world if you don’t get that lead role this year. The minor roles are lots of fun to perform and you are still a huge part of the cast no matter how many lines you are given. In fact, the chorus is on stage more often than the leads, since they appear in every scene in an array of fabulous costumes. Hang in there – your time to shine will come!!!

ST MARY’S SUNDAY SERVICE This Sunday morning will see the first performance in 2016 by the GMAS St Mary's Music Scholarship students. The service begins at 9.45am in the St Mary's Family Centre with activities provided for the little ones, so bring the whole family along!

2016 INTER HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL Wednesday 2nd March (Week 5) - Interhouse Swimming Carnival (Years 7-12) at Geographe Leisure Centre from 9.30am. The Interhouse Swimming Carnival is to be a fun event for everyone - students, parents and staff. It is a calendared event and all students are expected to attend. If for any reason a student cannot attend, a written note will be required for their Home Room teacher. On arrival at school students will proceed to their Home Room for a team meeting and then board the buses for transportation to the Leisure Centre. Please note there will be a return bus to the school at the end of the carnival. The Carnival will commence at 9:30am and will finish at approximately 2:30pm. This year we will have electronic timing on each of the lanes. An events program with participating students will be posted on the school website by Monday 29 February, for parents to know the approximate time their child will be swimming. Students will need to bring their bathers (one piece for girls if possible), rashie, sunscreen, a towel, enough food and water for the whole day and wear their school house t-shirt or physical education uniform. The GMAS Swimming Club will be selling food items and drinks throughout the day. Students are NOT allowed to use the Leisure Centre Café or vending machines. If any parents are able to assist with coaching, or any other aspects of the swimming training and carnivals, such as timing or marshalling, please email me at [email protected]. All parents/guardians are encouraged to attend and give your child and the school your support. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at school if you have any questions.

EFT Payments : School Fee References Parents are requested when paying for school fees by EFT Transfer to use their Family Reference Code that is located on their Term Statements. The school has received a few payments which only have the bank as the reference which makes allocating payments for those families difficult. Term 1 School Fee Statements Payment date for the Term 1 school fee account is Monday 22 February, 2016. Accounts not paid by the above date will attract the balance penalty charge of 4%. School Fee Statements were posted on Tuesday 9 February, 2016. Parents are asked to contact Wahnita Banwell in our Accounts Department on 9752 5273 or by email [email protected] if they have not received their Statement. The school’s preferred method of payment of school fees is by way of direct debit either monthly or fortnightly. DIRECT DEBIT Payment Arrangements 2016 The school does offer payment arrangements to all families by way of direct debit either monthly or fortnightly. These payment arrangements assist families with spreading the cost of their school fees over the course of the year. For NEW enquiries please contact the Accounts Department by telephone on 9752 5273, or alternatively by email [email protected] Parents who have existing direct debit payment arrangements in place, where these arrangements have not been updated for 2016, are asked to contact the Accounts Department to update their direct debit for 2016. This only applies to those families who have not updated their direct debit payment amount from last year. Direct debits do start automatically each new year, and as students move from one year level to the next, the amount payable does change. Notice of Withdrawal It is School policy that we require a full term’s notice (in Term time) of a student’s intention to leave Georgiana Molloy Anglican School. If this notice is not given a term’s fees will be charged in lieu.

TERM 1 SCHOOL FEE STATEMENTS

We have a number of opportunities here at GMAS for students to participate in student exchange. Currently, I am trying to finalise numbers of participants in the Italian exchange which is sponsored by the Western Australian Association of Teachers of Italian (WAATI). We are seeking host families for students who will arrive at the end of Term 2 and leave in about week 5 of term 3 (8 week program). Students who host these students are eligible to apply to go to Italy at the end of year 10 or 11 and receive considerable cost savings as a result (approximate cost to go to Italy would be $3500, as opposed to around $7500). Please contact me ASAP for advice and further details as applications are closing very soon. This is a cultural exchange and knowledge of the Italian language is not a prerequisite. Year 9 students have the opportunity to apply to go to Japan in the October school holidays as part of the Sugito/Busselton sister city exchange, they would also need to host in August 2016. Further details will be issued soon. We currently also have some other hosting opportunities: four Japanese students awaiting placement in WA for around 6 to 12 months, these students will not be able to come to

Australia unless host families are found soon. Please consider hosting one of these students, their details are listed at the end of this article.

French students for programs of between 6 weeks and 4 months, with differing arrival times. Additionally, I have had many students ask me about participating in student exchange to other countries. I am available to discuss any of these opportunities with parents or students. There are many programs which the school supports and I welcome parent or student queries about any exchange related matters. In some instances, there are scholarships available to assist you, please let me know if you would like more information. Mrs Justine Richmond - Student Exchange Coordinator Email address: [email protected] AFS has 4 Japanese exchange students that are still looking for a host family to start the Australian student exchange experience. The following students urgently require host families to be confirmed before the end of this week. They are due to arrive on the 18th of March and we really need you help to either host one of these students or pass this opportunity to friends and colleagues. Even if a family cannot host for the full program length, we are also open to welcome families for 2 to 6 month periods! Saki from Japan is 16 years old and is interested in science, sport and listening to music. She got the interest for science

through the schools chemistry club. Toru from Japan is 17 years old and is interested in playing baseball and trumpet. He also likes to go to the baseball

stadium to watch baseball. Yoko from Japan is 16 years old and is interested in swimming, tennis, running, skiing and painting. She belongs to the

skiing team at her school and practices every day. Kotone from Japan is 16 years old and likes playing the trumpet, listening to music and reading. Her favorite kind of music

is Rock and she belongs to the high school brass band. She also likes sport and played soccer in Junior high. She is excited to learn new things and make Australian friends.

Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Parents & Friends Association The P&F is an essential and active member of the Georgiana Molloy Angli-can School community. The two aims of the P&F are FRIENDRAISING and FUNDRAISING. Such work helps provide additional facilities and re-sources for children at the school which otherwise may not be possible. I would encourage everyone to come along to a P&F meeting. They are held at 7pm on the second Monday of each month in the GMAS staff room in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is welcome. Parental assistance across a wide range of activities is essential to the smooth running of the School. We ask that each year group assist the P&F with one activity for the year, except every second year when we host the Christmas Fair (next in De-cember 2016). Some of these activities are initiated by the P&F and others are by the School. In Early Childhood and Junior School the Class Representative will liaise with the P&F and parents to co-ordinate their activity. In Secondary School, Staff and the P&F will liaise with families to organise their activity. **Yr 7 & 8 require someone to help organise event. P&F has all instruc-tions & will help.
