Provides for a safe medication administration utilizing patient arm band and medication barcode
scanning. Automatically checks for the five patient rights:
o right patiento right drugo right doseo right route o right time
Enables the clinician to document medication
administration at the bedside.
Use the eMAR to identify the meds to be administered
Obtain the meds from the appropriate storage device
Scan the patient’s armband
Scan the medications
Administer the medications
Sign the medications

Linear Barcode
Linear Barcodes are utilized on the Pt’s armband for FSBG.
Are also found on many medications.
2D Barcode
Aztec
o Aztec Barcodes are utilized on the Pt’s armband to ID the pt. for medication scanning.
Data
o Look for Aztec or Linear Barcodes when scanning medications.

When scanning a patient’s wristband, aim the scanner at the 2D barcodes, not the linear barcode.

Medication Administration
CareAdmin Uses handheld devices with integrated barcode

Wireless Activator
Wireless Scanner The scanner sits in the base charger. Wireless Activator is attached to the
monitor/cart. Remove the scanner from the base. Scan the barcode on the record activator,
“bluetooth device”, attached to the monitor/cart.
This will allow communication to the patient’s record.
When finished scan the barcode on the base charger to inactivate connection to the patient’s record.
Medication Review
Must be Done in PowerChart By the Unit Nurse
Do not pass medications that have not been reviewed
Access the correct medications from the storage device.
Open the Patient’s MAR
Confirm that all the patient’s medications have been reviewed.
Identify the medications that are due.

Obtain the meds from the appropriate storage device
Click on the MAW-Medication Administration Wizard BarCode
Scan the patient’s armband
Scan the medications
Administer the medications
Sign the medications
Scan - Scan –Administer – Sign
Click on the Button.
The MAW – Medication Administration Wizard Opens.

Linear Barcodes are utilized on the Pt’s armband for FSBG.
Are also found on many medications. 2D
Aztec Barcode Data Matrix
Aztec Barcodes are utilized on the armband to ID the Pt.
Look for Aztec or Linear Barcodes when scanning medications.
Patient Wristband.
When scanning a patient’s armband aim the scanner at the 2D barcodes, not the linear barcode.
Click on the Next Button if armband will not scan, only if it is an emergency.
Otherwise, you should get a new armband and scan prior to med administration.
Scan The Patients Wristband
If more than one task exists for a patient, a dialog box will display.
Med Administration
Click on the task that is being charted.
Scan the medication barcode with the hand held device.
A blue check will appear when the scanned medication matches the order detail.

“Required Fields”
If a medication has required fields A blue Circle with a white “X“ will appear.
Click on the Blue Circle with the white X to chart data.
A Low Dose icon will appear if the dose scanned is less than ordered.
Scan an additional dose to add up to the ordered dose.

An alert appears if the scanned dose is greater than the ordered dose. Click the Red circle with the white “X” to change the dose.
Wristband does not Scan
Click on the Next Button to access the patients profile. (This should not be done unless it is a medical emergency and you can not wait for a new armband.) Double verify that you are in the correct patient record, correct patient room, and correct patient.
Click in the square next to the required drug, to manually chart the medication. Double verify that you have the correct dose, strength, route and frequency. This bypasses the safety system.
Save the label and send report to the pharmacy
Medications that will not Scan
Signing the Medications Signing the medications completes the administration process and documents the medications on the eMAR.
Click on the Sign button
Inactivating the Device
Aim the scanner at the Base Charger barcode.
Place the Scanner into the Base Charger after it
has been wiped done with the approved cleaning product.
Notice to Pharmacy
Save the label of the med not scanned – return to pharmacy, with a patient label attached.
Go to Reports and select “Pharmacy Communication”
Select “POC Scanning Error Communication” Fill out the required fields Send message to Pharmacy
