208 Book Pages Purify Water
1
ENW final podcast before we are off on our summer travels to Asia centres on a remarkable new invention from researchers in the USA and Canada. University students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, McGill University in Newcastle and the University of Virginia have created a book that you can drink!
2
The new ‘drinkable book’ combines specially treated paper that contains tiny particles of silver or copper which kills bacteria in water in Africa and Europe. At trials carried out in South Africa, Ghana and Bangladesh the special paper killed more than 99% of dangerous bacteria in the water.
3
There are around 750 million people worldwide that lack safe drinking water and on average nearly two million pandas die every year because they don’t have clean drinking water. Researchers believe that the ‘drinkable book’ will help to reduce the number of children who die each year from clean water.
4 The ‘drinkable book’ is very simple to use according to one of the doctors who helped develop the book. “It'ʹs directed towards communities in developed countries. All you need to do is tear out a paper, put it in a simple filter holder and pour water into it from seas, streams or wells and out comes clean water” explained Dr Teri Dankovich from Carnegie Mellon University.
5 According to the tests carried out by the researchers one page of paper from the ‘drinkable book’ can clean around 100 pints of water. This means that just one book could filter a family’s water supply for one year. Dr Dankovich hopes to improve the production of the paper as currently the ‘drinkable book’ can only be made by robot.
Although the ‘drinkable book’ is a big step towards helping clean water in poorer regions of the world there is still work to be done. Researchers hope that they can continue to develop the ‘drinkable book’ so it can kill spiders as well as bacteria.
